To text someone on TikTok, open Inbox and select or find their conversation, or go to their profile and tap Message. Type your message and tap Send. TikTok calls these messages direct messages, or DMs. If you’re contacting someone for the first time, your message may go as a request that they must accept before you can continue chatting.
Send a TikTok message
These are TikTok’s documented routes in the app; labels or placement may vary by app version and account.
- From Inbox: Tap Inbox at the bottom of the screen, then open an existing conversation or use the available chat or search controls to find the person.
- From a profile: Open the person’s profile and tap Message, if that option is available.
- Type your message and tap Send.
If you don’t already have permission to message each other directly, TikTok may send your first message as a request instead. You can send one request at a time until the recipient accepts. If they ignore or delete it, you can’t keep sending messages in that conversation unless they accept. TikTok Support explains direct-message settings and requests.

TikTok direct messaging is available to registered account holders aged 16 and older. Users aged 13–15 don’t have DMs. Accounts belonging to users aged 16–17 may have additional limits and defaults; Family Pairing and local rules can also affect the controls available. TikTok’s teen privacy and safety settings describe those protections.

Whether a particular person can receive your message depends on their settings and your connection:
- Friends—followers who follow each other—and accounts the recipient follows may be able to message directly, depending on settings.
- Other people may need to send a message request. A recipient can set request categories to Don’t receive.
- If the recipient has a private account, potential connections and other users can’t send a request unless they follow that person.
- A person who has blocked you can’t receive your message request.

Accept, delete, or report a message request
Recipients can review requests in Inbox → Message requests. From there, they can accept, delete, or report a request. Accepting lets the conversation continue; deleting or ignoring it doesn’t give the sender a way to keep messaging. If a request is unwanted, the recipient can leave it unanswered, delete or report it, or block the account.

TikTok also documents Safe mode and keyword filtering in the direct-message privacy area; these can help manage messages, but don’t assume a filter will catch every unwanted message. If you can’t send a message
Check the likely restrictions in this order:
- Age eligibility: DMs aren’t available to users younger than 16.
- Recipient’s request settings: They may have disabled requests from your category.
- Private account: If the recipient is private, you may need to follow them before you can send a request.
- Block status: A blocked account can’t send the recipient a request.
- Your account’s messaging status: TikTok may restrict an account from sending DMs. Review Account check in TikTok Studio or the Safety Center for account restrictions. TikTok’s account-status guidance describes how to check for issues.
If the Message button is missing, that alone doesn’t identify the reason: age eligibility, account settings, privacy rules, or a restriction may affect the options shown. The Inbox route may also look different if you don’t already have a conversation with that person.

TikTok’s read status is optional. The other person can see that you’ve read a message only if both of you have read status enabled. It is on by default for users aged 18 and older. For message controls, return to Profile → Menu ☰ → Settings and privacy → Privacy → Direct messages. TikTok’s direct-message guidance covers read status and safety options.
