You can send a fax without a fax machine by uploading a document to an online fax service, entering the recipient’s fax number, and checking the delivery status. For a family that also needs to receive faxes, choose a service or plan that provides an inbound number or inbox; sending access alone does not guarantee a number for receiving.
How browser faxing works
A browser-based fax service substitutes an online workflow for the machine and phone line used to send a traditional fax. The usual steps are to prepare a digital document, upload it, address it to a fax number, and monitor the result.
- Prepare the document as a supported file, such as a PDF or image.
- Open the fax service in a browser and upload the file. Some services allow multiple files to be combined into one fax.
- Enter the recipient’s fax number carefully, including any required country or area code.
- Send the fax and check the service’s delivery status or history for the result.
For example, Browserfax describes uploading PDF or JPG/PNG files, entering a recipient number, and viewing delivery status. It also lists an optional Chrome extension. WestFax describes a browser portal with upload, sending, inbox, history, and status features. These are provider descriptions, not independent tests of delivery performance.
Do you need to install anything?
Not necessarily. The services described here offer browser-based sending, so the core workflow does not require installing a fax machine or a dedicated desktop program. Some providers also offer optional channels such as browser extensions, mobile apps, email-to-fax, or print drivers. Those can make recurring use more convenient, but they are separate from the basic browser workflow.

How to send a paper document
A browser service needs a digital file, so paper documents must be captured before upload. A phone camera is often the simplest option: use a scanning or document-capture workflow, check that every page is legible and in order, then save or upload the resulting file. SecurelyFax describes phone-camera capture and a built-in scanner workflow; WestFax says its phone app can scan paper using the camera.
A separate portable document scanner is optional, not a requirement. It may be more convenient for a household that regularly handles multi-page paperwork or wants consistent scans, while a phone camera avoids buying additional equipment for occasional faxes.

Sending and receiving are different needs
Sending a fax does not automatically give your family a fax number where other people can send documents. If relatives need to receive replies, medical paperwork, or other incoming faxes, check what the service provides: a dedicated number, a shared inbox arrangement, or forwarding to email. Also confirm who can access the inbox and how incoming documents are delivered.

The services describe different arrangements. Browserfax and WestFax describe dedicated fax numbers. SecurelyFax describes a shared inbound number with an inbox code on its free tier and dedicated US numbers on paid subscriptions. Features and plan terms can change, so verify the details for the plan you intend to use.

Choose a service around your family’s fax pattern
Before signing up, decide whether the need is an occasional outgoing fax or a recurring setup that must receive documents too. Then compare the service’s current plan terms against these practical questions:
- Sending frequency: Is pay-per-page or a prepaid page pack more suitable for occasional use, or does a monthly plan make sense for regular sending?
- Receiving: Does the plan include a dedicated number, a shared inbox, or email forwarding? Are there separate number or porting charges?
- Allowance and overage: How many pages are included, and what happens when the allowance is used?
- Convenience: Can family members use a browser, phone capture, email-to-fax, or another channel that fits their habits?
- File handling and proof: Which formats and page limits are accepted? Can files be merged? Is there a delivery receipt, status history, or policy for failed sends?
- Document handling: Review encryption, retention, access controls, and any compliance terms for the exact plan—not just general marketing language.
Plan structures vary. As listed on their pages reviewed in 2026, Browserfax offered free pages and prepaid packs alongside monthly receiving-number plans; SecurelyFax listed pay-as-you-go pricing and subscriptions; and WestFax listed monthly plans with included pages and overages. These are snapshots of vendor offers, not evergreen rates. Check the providers’ current terms before choosing.

Handle sensitive documents carefully
Online faxing is not automatically secure simply because it happens in a browser. A provider’s statements about encryption, retention, audit logs, or compliance are vendor claims; confirm the protections and terms that apply to the plan and workflow you will actually use.

For U.S. healthcare information, the Department of Health and Human Services says the HIPAA Privacy Rule permits covered providers to share protected health information for treatment without patient authorization when they use reasonable safeguards. HHS gives confirming an unfamiliar fax number with the intended recipient as an example of such a safeguard. That guidance is specific: it does not establish that every consumer fax service or plan is compliant.
For any sensitive fax, verify the destination number, limit access to the online inbox, and understand how the service stores and handles documents. For regulated information, assess the applicable requirements and plan terms rather than relying on a general security claim.
