To get a fair price for gold jewelry or coins, identify what you have, estimate its metal value where relevant, and compare written offers on the same terms. A buyer’s offer is not the spot price: it may reflect the buyer’s spread, testing and refining costs, fees, and the item’s resale or collector value. The best route depends on whether you are selling bullion, scrap, or a piece someone may want to own and wear.
Use the steps below to prepare each item, compare buyers, and decide whether a metal-only offer is the right choice. Hallmark rules and consumer protections vary by country, so treat the UK and India examples here as local guidance, not global rules.
How to sell gold jewelry or coins and get a fair price
Start by separating coins from jewelry and assessing each item on its own merits. A bullion coin is usually compared with the value of its actual gold content and the dealer’s buy-back price. Jewelry might be worth its scrap metal value, but a wearable, desirable, or collectible piece could also attract a secondhand buyer or auction bidder. Those routes do not guarantee a higher return; compare real net offers against the time, fees, and uncertainty involved.
For either category, do not treat a quoted spot price as the amount you will receive. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) defines spot as the cash price for immediate delivery, quoted in dollars per troy ounce. It explains: “A dealer will always sell metal above the spot price and buy it back below the spot price.” Dealers set their own spreads, so ask how an offer relates to a current reference price and compare buyers rather than relying on a single quote.

1. Sort, record, and photograph each item
Keep jewelry and coins separate
Make a simple inventory before contacting buyers. List each piece individually rather than recording one combined weight for a mixed group. For jewelry, note the item type, visible marks, condition, and any stones or components that may not be gold. For coins, record the denomination, year, mint mark if visible, and condition. These details help you ask comparable questions and reduce the chance of overlooking an item that needs a different kind of assessment.
Weigh jewelry as a preparation step
Nottinghamshire County Council Trading Standards recommends weighing and photographing jewelry before trying to sell it, especially if it will be sent by post. A small digital pocket scale can help you record an item’s gross weight, but it is not an appraisal tool or a purity tester. Stones, clasps, solder, and other non-gold parts can make gross weight different from the weight of gold a buyer will value. Ask the buyer what weight they use and how they account for those components.
Photographs are useful for your own records and for documenting what you send. Capture the whole item and close-ups of marks, stones, damage, and distinctive details. A photo cannot establish purity or value, but it can help you describe the item consistently and check what is returned if you decline a mail-in offer.
Do not clean or alter items just to sell them
The material available here does not establish that cleaning or repair raises a buyer’s offer. Preserve the item’s present condition and ask a secondhand or specialist buyer whether condition affects its value before making changes. For a possible collectible, original details and an accurate description are more useful than an unverified claim that it is rare.
2. Identify purity, marks, and possible collector value
Read jewelry marks cautiously
Look for a karat or fineness mark, but do not assume a stamp alone proves an item’s content in every country. Fineness expresses precious-metal content in parts per thousand. In UK guidance, gold marked 375 has a fineness of 375 parts per 1,000, the minimum fineness mark for 9-carat gold. UK hallmarking guidance also describes three required components for a hallmark: a sponsor’s mark, a fineness mark, and an assay office mark. The rules and exemptions are specific to the UK; other countries have their own systems.

Ask the buyer how purity will be tested and what happens if the test result differs from a mark or your expectation. If you do not recognize a mark, verify it using the appropriate local authority or ask a qualified local professional. A stamp, especially one from an unfamiliar system, should be treated as useful information rather than a universal guarantee.
Identify coins before treating them as bullion
Do not estimate a coin’s gold value from its face value or gross weight. Find the exact coin and use its stated gold content or actual gold weight when comparing a bullion offer with the metal reference price. Bullion coins are investment-grade in purity and weight, while a numismatic coin may also have collector value. A coin with a potentially unusual date, mint, or condition deserves informed assessment before you accept a metal-only offer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe CFTC warns against relying on unsupported “semi-numismatic” claims as a reason to pay or accept a premium; the term has no special meaning in its advisory. Ask anyone claiming a collector premium to explain the evidence and basis for it. If the coin may be collectible, consult a knowledgeable coin specialist rather than assuming either that the premium is real or that the coin is worth only its gold.
3. Estimate a metal-value reference, not a guaranteed payout
Use current spot and the item’s gold content
For bullion or scrap, a rough reference starts with the current spot price in your local currency and the amount of gold in the item. For a coin with a stated gold weight, compare that weight with a live quote for gold. For jewelry, you need both its fineness and the net gold weight; a gross jewelry weight can include stones and non-gold components. Keep the calculation in consistent weight units and remember that the spot quote is a reference, not a dealer’s promise to pay that amount.
Spot prices change, so use a quote current when you request offers rather than relying on a fixed figure in an article or an old estimate. Ask each buyer what reference price and timestamp they are using. The CFTC’s advisory includes illustrations and historical examples, but they are not current market benchmarks for a seller’s payout.

Understand why an offer may be below the reference
A buyer may deduct or account for a spread, refining, testing, handling, or other costs. Some expenses may be stated as a fee; others may be reflected in the price per unit or the amount of gold credited. Do not assume that two offers are comparable just because both are described as a percentage of spot or as an amount “per gram.” Ask for the weights, purity, reference price, and deductions behind each calculation.

There is no established representative market statistic here for the average jewelry or coin seller payout, typical spread across all buyers, or the share of spot most sellers receive. Avoid treating a single advertised percentage or local example as a universal benchmark. Your useful comparison is the net amount offered for your specific items, under written terms.
4. Get and compare written offers
Ask at least two buyers when practical
Take the same inventory and description to at least two buyers where practical. Nottinghamshire Trading Standards recommends trying multiple buyers and checking costs; the CFTC likewise advises shopping around because dealers set their own spreads. You might approach a reputable local coin shop or bullion dealer for bullion, and ask a jewelry buyer or secondhand outlet about wearable pieces. No buyer category is established as consistently highest-paying for every item or location.
Ask each buyer the same questions
- What weight and purity are you using for each item, and how will you test it?
- What current price reference are you using, and how is your offer calculated against it?
- What deductions apply for stones, non-gold parts, refining, assay, handling, or other costs?
- Are there postage, insurance, return, or other charges if I send the item or decline the offer?
- When will payment be made, and by what method?
- Can you provide the offer and all conditions in writing before I hand over or post the item?
Compare the net amount you would actually receive, not a headline claim such as “up to” a stated price. The CFTC advises buyers to disclose fees in writing and compare buy-back terms; Trading Standards also highlights fees and postage. If one quote is higher, check whether it uses the same weight, purity, and reference price, and whether a fee or condition changes the final amount.
Keep control of a mail-in transaction
Before posting anything, get the process and terms in writing. Ask how the parcel is tracked and insured, what value is covered, how the buyer records and assesses items on arrival, how long the offer remains open, and what it costs to have declined items returned. Keep your inventory, photographs, postage details, and the buyer’s written terms. If you do not accept the offer, follow the stated return process and check the returned items against your records.

Mail-in selling adds custody and return questions that a face-to-face quote may avoid. Do not infer protection from a buyer’s general assurance; clarify the actual coverage, exclusions, deadlines, and charges before sending valuable property. Consumer rights can also be harder to enforce when an online trader is based outside your country, a point UK consumer guidance specifically raises for UK buyers dealing with overseas traders.
5. Choose the selling route for the item
Bullion coins: compare buy-back terms against gold content
For a bullion coin, obtain the coin’s actual gold weight, check the current reference price, and request a buy-back offer from reputable coin shops or bullion dealers. Compare each dealer’s net offer and the terms for payment, testing, and any costs. The dealer’s spread is a normal part of a buy-back transaction, but its size varies. Do not substitute the coin’s face value or total weight for its gold content.
Potentially collectible coins: get a relevant assessment
If a coin may have collector demand because of its exact type, year, mint, or condition, seek an assessment from someone knowledgeable in coins before selling it solely for metal value. Ask for the basis of any claimed collector premium; an unsupported label is not evidence. Compare the assessment and any actual offer with the bullion alternative rather than treating an appraisal as a guaranteed sale price.
Ordinary or damaged jewelry: evaluate a scrap quote
A scrap or refining offer can be a relevant option for ordinary or damaged jewelry, but compare multiple buyers and their deductions. Confirm whether the buyer has counted non-gold components separately and what net gold weight and purity are being used. The gross weight you recorded is a preparation aid, not proof of the buyer’s gold weight calculation.

A piece that is desirable as jewelry may be worth testing in a secondhand sale or at auction instead of selling only for scrap. Nottinghamshire Trading Standards identifies those routes as alternatives that may bring more than a scrap offer. They are not guaranteed to do so: consider selling time, fees, the chance of no sale, and the amount you would actually retain. Compare net proceeds and effort with a direct metal offer before choosing.

6. Check local rules and consumer protections
UK hallmark guidance
For sales in the UK, government and British Hallmarking Council guidance says qualifying precious-metal articles must carry a legally recognized hallmark, subject to weight exemptions. The cited UK guidance states that gold items below 1 gram are exempt from the hallmarking requirement. It also explains the sponsor’s, fineness, and assay office marks. These are UK requirements and should not be applied automatically to a transaction elsewhere.
UK consumer guidance suggests checking a seller’s reputation or trade-body membership and notes that enforcing legal rights may be harder when an online trader is based outside the UK. Confirm the applicable terms and protections for the buyer and transaction you are considering.
India and other hallmark systems
The Bureau of Indian Standards’ consumer FAQ says that people in India may sell old hallmarked or unhallmarked jewelry to jewelers and describes a purity complaint route and HUID verification. This is India-specific guidance; check current local procedures if a purity dispute or mark verification matters to your sale.

The World Gold Council notes that hallmarking practices differ internationally, including differences in US marking practice, and that countries have their own requirements. For any unfamiliar stamp, use local guidance and ask the buyer to explain how it will test the item. This article does not establish the tax treatment, buyer licensing rules, or exact mail-in protections for every jurisdiction; consult the relevant local authority or a qualified adviser when those issues affect your transaction.
Common mistakes that can reduce what you receive
- Confusing spot with your payout. Spot is a reference for immediate metal value; the buyer’s offer can be lower after its spread and costs.
- Using gross weight as gold weight. Jewelry may include stones, clasps, solder, or other non-gold parts; ask for net gold weight and purity.
- Valuing a coin by face value or total weight. Use its actual gold content for a bullion comparison and investigate possible collector value separately.
- Accepting a single quote without a breakdown. Ask multiple buyers where practical and compare the same price basis, deductions, and payment terms.
- Assuming every stamp has the same force everywhere. Hallmark definitions and legal requirements are country-specific.
- Taking an advertised maximum at face value. Confirm the actual net offer, qualifying conditions, charges, and what happens if testing changes the buyer’s assessment.
- Mailing items without written terms. Clarify tracking, insurance, valuation, offer deadlines, return costs, and payment before sending anything.
- Selling a potentially desirable piece as scrap without checking. Compare a real secondhand or auction possibility against scrap, while accounting for fees and time.
A final decision checklist
- Have I inventoried and photographed each item separately?
- For jewelry, have I recorded gross weight and marks without mistaking either for a purity test?
- For coins, have I identified the exact coin and its gold content, and considered whether collector value might matter?
- Have I used a current local-currency spot reference only as a comparison point?
- Have I asked at least two buyers for a written offer and breakdown where practical?
- Have I compared the amount after all fees, deductions, postage, insurance, or return charges?
- If the piece may be worth more as an object than as metal, have I considered a secondhand or auction route and its costs?
- Have I checked the relevant local hallmark and consumer rules for this transaction?
A fair decision is based on a clear description of the item, a transparent calculation, and comparable net offers. The reference price helps you recognize the metal component; it does not determine whether a specific buyer’s final terms are worthwhile.
