You can self-host Unstructured on a Linux VPS by running its official Docker image behind an authenticated HTTPS reverse proxy, with persistent storage for documents and outputs. Docker is the reproducible path; a native Python installation is possible when you need tighter control over system packages. A small CPU-only VPS is suitable for prototypes, internal tools and low-volume, privacy-sensitive preprocessing, but the open-source library is not intended to match the throughput, OCR quality, model access or chunking features of Unstructured’s managed offerings.

What you are deploying

Unstructured is an open-source toolkit for ingesting and preprocessing PDFs, images, HTML, Word documents and many other formats. Its workflow can partition a file into typed elements, clean content, extract metadata, stage intermediate data and chunk text for downstream systems such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), ETL pipelines, pretraining and fine-tuning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A VPS deployment normally consists of four layers:

  • Linux host: a current distribution with security updates, a non-root administrator and a firewall.
  • Container or Python environment: the Unstructured runtime and its document-format dependencies.
  • Persistent storage: directories for uploads, converted files, extracted output, logs and configuration. Keep important data outside the container’s writable layer.
  • Network edge: a reverse proxy such as Caddy, Nginx or Traefik that terminates TLS and enforces authentication before requests reach a private Unstructured container network.

Do not publish an unauthenticated parser or file-upload endpoint directly to the internet. The proxy, firewall and authentication controls are deployment decisions, not security defaults supplied by the library.

Decide whether a VPS deployment fits

Good fits

  • Prototyping a document-ingestion workflow before choosing a managed service.
  • Internal tools with modest, predictable job volume.
  • Privacy-sensitive preprocessing where keeping files on infrastructure you control is more important than maximum extraction quality.
  • Batch jobs that can tolerate CPU-only processing and occasional maintenance.

When to choose a managed option instead

The official overview describes the open-source library as a starting point for quick prototyping with limits and states that it is not designed for production scenarios. It lists significantly reduced performance for document and table extraction, no access to the latest vision-language-model offerings, no fine-tuned OCR models and no by-page or by-similarity chunking strategies. GPU use is not supported for the OSS library.

For sustained production throughput, advanced OCR, higher table fidelity or model-driven layout features, evaluate Unstructured Pipelines or the Unstructured API. That shifts infrastructure, scaling and upgrades to a provider, while adding recurring service costs and a vendor/data-governance decision. Compare the two approaches on the following axes:

Decision area Self-hosted OSS on a VPS API or Pipelines
Control and locality You choose the host, network, retention and backup policy; files can remain in your environment. Processing occurs through a managed service, so review region, retention, contracts and transfer controls.
Setup and maintenance You install Docker or Python dependencies, secure the host, rotate logs, monitor resources and perform upgrades. The provider operates the service; you integrate credentials, quotas and service changes.
OCR and table quality Uses the open-source package and available local dependencies; quality depends on your corpus and configuration. May provide newer or fine-tuned models and managed processing options; confirm capabilities for your plan.
Chunking and model features Does not include the OSS limitations’ missing by-page, by-similarity and latest vision-language features. Managed products may expose additional chunking and model features; verify the current product documentation.
Throughput and scaling Bound by the VPS CPU, memory, disk and your queue design; horizontal scaling is your responsibility. Scaling and queue capacity are service concerns, subject to quotas and pricing.
GPU availability GPU use is not supported for the OSS library. Availability depends on the selected managed offering.
Recurring cost The package is free; you pay for VPS resources, storage, backups, bandwidth and your operations time. You pay service charges in addition to any integration and storage costs.

Do not treat vendor benchmark figures as a guarantee for your documents. Unstructured maintainers report that Transform achieved 2× table-content accuracy, 58% less invented content and 0.878 text accuracy versus 0.715 in a SCOREBench note covering 224 pages in September 2026, with an OSS comparison from more than 1,000 pages. Your scans, languages, tables and layouts can produce different results.

Choose VPS capacity and storage

There is no single official minimum CPU, RAM, disk or throughput specification for every workload. Capacity depends on page count, scan resolution, OCR languages, Office conversions, table inference, concurrency and retention. Start with a current Linux VPS on its native architecture and measure a representative corpus before increasing concurrency.

  • CPU: OCR, PDF rendering and Office conversion are CPU-intensive. More concurrent jobs require more cores or a queue that limits parallelism.
  • Memory: large PDFs, high-resolution images and conversion processes can consume substantially more memory than plain text extraction. Leave headroom for the operating system, Docker and the reverse proxy.
  • Disk: reserve space for source uploads, rendered pages, OCR intermediates, extracted output, container layers, logs and backups. Set quotas and retention rules because temporary files can grow quickly.
  • Network: account for upload size, remote storage, package downloads and backups. Keep the parser on a private container network whenever possible.
  • Architecture: the official image is multi-platform and supports x86_64 and Apple silicon. On a conventional Linux VPS, use the host architecture; explicitly select --platform linux/amd64 only when the host or registry requires it.

Model downloads, OCR language packs and temporary conversion files are part of capacity planning. Benchmark a text PDF, a scanned PDF, an image, an HTML document and a DOCX file before setting production limits.

Prepare and secure the Linux host

  1. Create a non-root administrative account. Use your VPS provider’s console or initial administrator to add a separate account, grant only the administrative privileges you need and configure SSH keys. Disable password SSH login after confirming key access.
  2. Apply security updates. Update the operating system and reboot if the kernel or other core services require it. Keep a recovery-console path available in case an SSH configuration change locks you out.
  3. Configure the firewall. Allow SSH from trusted addresses where practical, and allow HTTPS (TCP 443). Keep the Docker daemon API, database ports and the Unstructured container port off the public interface. Only open HTTP (TCP 80) if you need it for a controlled certificate challenge or redirect.
  4. Install Docker Engine. Use your distribution’s supported Docker installation method, enable the daemon at boot and verify that a test container can start. Avoid exposing the Docker socket to application containers; access to it is effectively host-level control.
  5. Create a restricted application directory. A layout such as /srv/unstructured/ can contain compose.yaml, an environment file, logs and subdirectories for uploads, outputs and temporary work. Restrict ownership and permissions so unrelated users cannot read document data or secrets.

Use a reverse proxy for TLS and authentication. The proxy should forward only the routes you intend to expose, enforce request-size and timeout limits appropriate for your documents, and write access logs without leaking file contents or credentials.

Deploy the official Docker image

Pull and pin an image

The repository documents the official image and an interactive shell command:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
docker pull downloads.unstructured.io/unstructured-io/unstructured:latest
docker run --name unstructured -d downloads.unstructured.io/unstructured-io/unstructured:latest
docker exec -it unstructured bash

latest is convenient for evaluation but can change. For repeatable operations, use an application-version tag, a commit-hash tag or an immutable digest after checking the repository’s published tags. Record the exact tag or digest in your deployment files and review release notes before upgrading.

Use persistent directories and a private network

A minimal Compose-style pattern keeps data outside the image layer and does not publish the parser port directly:

services:
  unstructured:
    image: downloads.unstructured.io/unstructured-io/unstructured:latest
    container_name: unstructured
    restart: unless-stopped
    networks:
      - private_docs
    volumes:
      - ./data/uploads:/data/uploads
      - ./data/outputs:/data/outputs
      - ./data/tmp:/data/tmp
    security_opt:
      - no-new-privileges:true

networks:
  private_docs:
    internal: true

Adapt paths and runtime arguments to the interface you actually use. If a reverse proxy runs in the same Compose project, attach it to the private network and publish only the proxy’s HTTPS port. If you run a command-line worker instead of a network service, omit public publishing entirely and feed files through a controlled job directory.

Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Add operational safeguards

  • Add a health check that exercises a lightweight, authenticated readiness path rather than uploading arbitrary files on every check.
  • Configure Docker’s log rotation so verbose conversion or proxy logs cannot fill the disk.
  • Set CPU, memory and process limits that leave room for the host and proxy. Start with one or a few concurrent jobs, then increase only after measuring.
  • Back up configuration, pinned image references and extracted outputs that cannot be regenerated. Encrypt backups and test a restoration on a separate directory or host.
  • Keep uploads outside the image layer and apply retention and deletion rules to originals and intermediates.

Put HTTPS and authentication in front

Terminate TLS at Caddy, Nginx or Traefik, using a certificate for the hostname that clients will call. Require authentication before the proxy forwards a request. Options include an identity-aware access layer, mutual TLS for service-to-service traffic or a strong application token validated by the proxy. Do not rely on an obscure URL as authentication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limit the accepted methods and paths, set a maximum request body size that covers legitimate files, and choose idle and upstream timeouts long enough for OCR without allowing abandoned uploads to consume workers indefinitely. Sanitize filenames, avoid reflecting user-controlled paths in responses and reject archives or formats you do not need. Monitor authentication failures and unusual upload volume.

Keep the Unstructured service bound to the private network. If a temporary diagnostic requires direct access, create a short-lived firewall rule restricted to your IP, then remove it; never leave a debug shell or unauthenticated endpoint exposed.

Native Python installation

A container assembles system dependencies more reproducibly, but a native installation can fit an existing Python operations model or give you direct control over package versions. Create a dedicated virtual environment and run the worker as a non-root user.

Select package extras

  • pip install unstructured covers formats such as text, HTML, XML, JSON and email.
  • pip install "unstructured[all-docs]" requests broad document support.
  • For selected Office formats, install the narrower extras such as unstructured[docx, pptx].

Install only the extras you need to reduce build time and dependency surface. Confirm the package’s current Python support before creating the environment; the layout-inference companion project has a stricter range described below.

Install system packages for your formats

Depending on the files you process, install:

  • libmagic-dev for file-type detection.
  • poppler-utils for PDF rendering and image-related PDF work.
  • tesseract-ocr for OCR.
  • libreoffice for Microsoft Office document conversion.

Package names vary by Linux distribution. Pin Python dependencies, record the operating-system package versions and run the service under a process supervisor. Native installs require you to patch both Python and system libraries; rebuilding the Docker image is often easier to reproduce.

Layout inference, OCR and model downloads

The companion unstructured-inference project provides hosted model inference for layout parsing. Its documented Python requirement is >=3.11 and <3.14. The pipeline can use detection models including Detectron2 and YOLOX, combine direct extraction with OCR and optionally perform table inference.

Layout inference is not a free switch on a tiny VPS. Model downloads consume disk and startup bandwidth; inference consumes CPU and memory; OCR language packs add storage; and temporary page images can multiply disk use. Decide which languages and model paths you need, warm the models before accepting jobs, and monitor the first-run download rather than allowing it to occur during an unbounded request.

Test scanned pages separately from digitally generated PDFs. A text PDF may require no OCR, while a scan depends on image resolution, skew, contrast and installed language data. For tables, compare cell structure and reading order against the original rather than checking only whether text was returned.

Validate the deployment before accepting real documents

Use a small corpus that represents your actual workload. Keep the files and expected checksums in a controlled test directory so that upgrades can be compared.

  1. Text PDF: verify that text elements, page metadata and reading order are present.
  2. Scanned PDF: confirm that OCR runs, the intended language is available and confidence or empty-page behavior is acceptable.
  3. Image: check that the image path is accepted and that extracted text or metadata is returned when expected.
  4. HTML page: inspect title, links, headings and removal of navigation or boilerplate that you do not want in a RAG index.
  5. DOCX: confirm paragraphs, headings, tables and metadata survive Office conversion if that format matters.
  6. Restart test: stop and start the container or service, then verify that configuration, model files and expected persistent directories remain available.
  7. Failure test: submit an oversized, corrupt or unsupported file and confirm that it fails safely, leaves no sensitive temporary artifact and does not block subsequent jobs.

Record processing time, peak CPU and memory, temporary disk growth, output element counts and errors for each file. Those measurements, not a generic VPS size, should determine queue concurrency and storage alerts.

Operate it safely over time

Monitoring

Alert on disk usage, memory pressure, CPU saturation, container restarts, queue age, failed jobs and certificate expiry. Track separate timings for upload, conversion, OCR, inference and output writing when your application exposes them. A rising queue with idle CPU often indicates a blocked dependency, disk contention or an overly conservative worker limit rather than a need for more cores.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Updates and rollback

Keep the image tag or digest, Compose file, environment variables and system package list under change control. Pull a new image into a staging directory, run the validation corpus, inspect output differences and review release notes before replacing the running container. Retain the previous immutable image reference so you can roll back quickly.

Backups and retention

Back up outputs and configuration according to how expensive they are to regenerate. Originals may require a different retention policy from OCR intermediates. Encrypt backups, restrict access and periodically restore a sample to verify that the backup is usable rather than merely present.

Least privilege

Run containers without unnecessary capabilities, use no-new-privileges where compatible, mount only required directories and make temporary directories non-persistent when possible. Keep secrets in an environment mechanism or secret store with restrictive permissions; do not bake tokens into images or commit them to Compose files.

Common failures and recovery paths

Container starts, then exits

Inspect docker logs unstructured and verify the image architecture, required environment variables and writable data directories. Recreate the container after correcting permissions or a malformed command. If you pinned a new digest, repeat the test with the previous known-good reference to distinguish an image change from a host problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PDF text is empty

Determine whether the file is a scan. Install and configure Tesseract and the required language data, ensure PDF rendering tools are available, and test a page image independently. If OCR is correct but reading order is poor, evaluate layout inference rather than repeatedly changing the upload endpoint.

Office conversion fails

Confirm that LibreOffice is installed in a native deployment or present in the selected image, that the conversion process can write its temporary profile, and that the file is not encrypted or corrupt. Limit concurrent conversions because each process can consume significant memory.

Check Docker layers, rotated logs, uploads, rendered pages, OCR intermediates and backups separately. Apply quotas and retention, remove abandoned temporary directories after failed jobs and expand the volume only after identifying which category is growing.

Requests time out

Inspect queue age and per-stage timings. Increase proxy and worker timeouts only when the workload is legitimate; otherwise enforce a queue and asynchronous job status so a client connection does not hold a worker open for the entire OCR operation.

Public scans or uploads appear in logs

Recheck firewall rules, published Docker ports and reverse-proxy routes. Remove direct port mappings, rotate credentials, invalidate exposed tokens and review access logs and stored files for unauthorized activity before reopening the service.

Practical production boundary

A secured VPS can be a responsible private preprocessing appliance when volume is low and CPU throughput is acceptable. It becomes a poor fit when you need sustained parallel ingestion, specialized OCR, the newest vision-language models, GPU acceleration, high-confidence table extraction or managed availability. At that point, compare the operational cost of larger or multiple VPS instances with Pipelines or the API, including data-transfer rules, retention, contractual controls and recurring charges.

Make the decision from your validation corpus and service objectives: acceptable extraction error, maximum queue time, recovery point, recovery time, supported languages, monthly budget and who will patch the host. The open-source package’s zero license price does not remove those infrastructure and operations costs.

Deployment checklist

  • Current Linux VPS with a non-root administrator and security updates applied.
  • Firewall exposing only the required SSH and HTTPS paths.
  • Docker Engine enabled at boot, or a pinned native Python environment.
  • Official image or package extras selected for your document formats.
  • Persistent, permission-restricted directories for uploads, outputs and necessary model data.
  • Reverse proxy providing TLS, authentication, request limits and private upstream routing.
  • Health check, log rotation, resource limits, monitoring and disk alerts.
  • Representative validation corpus covering text PDF, scan, image, HTML and DOCX where relevant.
  • Backups of irreplaceable outputs and configuration, with restoration tested.
  • Immutable image or dependency pinning, release-note review and a rollback reference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run Unstructured on a cheap CPU-only VPS?

Yes, for prototypes, internal tools and low-volume jobs. The open-source library does not support GPU use, so OCR, rendering and layout work must fit within the VPS CPU, memory and disk budget. Benchmark representative files before setting concurrency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Python version does unstructured-inference require?

The documented range is Python 3.11 or newer but below 3.14. Check the package’s current compatibility when you create or upgrade the environment.

Should I expose the Unstructured container port publicly?

No. Keep it on a private container network and put HTTPS and authentication at a reverse proxy. Publicly expose only the proxy and the SSH path you actually need.

Is the Docker image architecture compatible with my VPS?

The official image supports x86_64 and Apple silicon. Use the VPS’s native Linux architecture, or explicitly set --platform linux/amd64 when required by your host or registry.
