The simplest current way to self-host Seafile on a Linux VPS is the official Community Edition Docker deployment. Begin with at least 2 GB of RAM, two CPU cores running above 2 GHz and 10 GB of free disk space; plan for more than 50 GB if you expect a useful file collection. Put the Seafile data and database on persistent storage, place the service behind HTTPS on a real hostname, and test desktop, command-line and mobile clients before moving important files.
What self-hosted Seafile does
Seafile is a file-synchronization and collaboration platform that you operate on your own server instead of handing storage and account administration to a hosted provider. A VPS supplies the internet-connected Linux machine, while Docker runs Seafile and its supporting services in reproducible containers.
Your users work through a browser or official clients. A library is Seafile’s unit for organizing files and permissions; clients synchronize selected libraries, and the web interface can create links for other people. The VPS remains responsible for storage, updates, certificates, access control and backups, so self-hosting gives you control but also gives you those operational duties.
For individuals and small teams, Community Edition is free and open source. Professional Edition is a separate proprietary option for organisations that need its enterprise capabilities. Professional Edition can operate without a paid license for up to three users; that allowance is not unlimited free use.

Choose an edition and size the VPS

The Community Edition figures come from Seafile’s system-requirements documentation for manual version 12.0, accessed in 2026. The Professional figures come from its setup manual for version 13.0, also accessed in 2026. They are starting points, not performance guarantees: simultaneous users, previews, indexing, transfer rates and the size of your libraries determine how much headroom you actually need.
Compare the editions on four practical questions:
- Features: list the specific Professional functions your organisation requires before choosing the proprietary edition.
- Users: estimate normal and peak concurrent activity rather than counting only accounts.
- Headroom: leave memory and CPU capacity for the operating system, Docker and database work.
- Licensing and support: include the cost and terms of a Professional subscription if the three-user allowance does not cover your deployment.
Disk capacity is usually the first constraint. Ten gigabytes is the documented minimum available space, but a server intended for real file sharing should start with more than 50 GB and a storage plan that can grow without a risky migration.
Plan the VPS before installing
Use a supported Linux host
Provision a supported Linux distribution and a current VPS image. Record the VPS address, distribution version, administrator account and the region in which the machine runs. A static or otherwise stable public address makes DNS and certificate renewal predictable.
Reserve a hostname
Choose a dedicated hostname such as files.example.com. You will enter this hostname in Seafile’s environment configuration and later point its DNS record at the VPS. Do not begin public sharing with an IP address: a real hostname is required for a dependable HTTPS certificate and for client configuration that survives address changes.
Decide where persistent data lives
Treat the following locations as state, not disposable container files:
/opt/seafile-datafor Seafile’s file data./opt/seafile-mysqlfor the database data.
You may deliberately choose different locations, but then use those same locations consistently in the environment file, storage layout and backup jobs. A replacement container must be able to mount both locations and find the existing data.

Install the Community Edition with Docker
1. Harden the new VPS account
Connect over SSH using a key rather than a password, create a non-root administrative account, and apply available operating-system updates. Restrict SSH in the VPS firewall to the addresses or networks that need it. Keep administrative interfaces off the public internet unless a firewall rule explicitly permits them.

Open only the ports required for administration and web traffic. The exact firewall commands depend on the Linux distribution and your provider, so apply that distribution’s documented firewall procedure and verify the resulting rules before proceeding.
2. Install Docker
Install Docker by following Docker’s official installation instructions as directed by Seafile’s current manual. Confirm that the Docker Engine and Compose plugin are available to the account that will run the stack:
docker --version
docker compose versionIf either command fails, fix the Docker installation or group permissions before downloading Seafile files. Running a partially configured stack makes first-run failures harder to diagnose.

Keep Compose files and the environment file together in a directory such as /opt/seafile. This directory is configuration; the two persistent data locations hold the libraries and database.
sudo mkdir -p /opt/seafile
sudo chown "$USER":"$USER" /opt/seafile
cd /opt/seafileUse ownership and permissions appropriate for your distribution and security policy. Do not make the environment file world-readable because it contains credentials.
4. Download the official deployment files
For the manual version you selected, obtain Seafile’s official files named .env, seafile-server.yml, seadoc.yml and caddy.yml. Keep all four files from the same manual version. Mixing files from different releases can introduce incompatible variables or service definitions.
After downloading, check that the files are present:

cd /opt/seafile
ls -l .env seafile-server.yml seadoc.yml caddy.yml5. Edit the environment values
Open /opt/seafile/.env in a text editor and fill in every required value from the manual. Pay particular attention to:
- the server hostname that matches the DNS name you will publish;
- the administrator account and a strong, unique password;
- database credentials;
- the persistent volume locations, including
/opt/seafile-dataand/opt/seafile-mysqlunless you intentionally selected alternatives; - any edition- or version-specific settings required by the selected manual.
Keep a protected copy of the exact .env used in production. Losing it can make a restore or upgrade unnecessarily difficult, while exposing it can reveal administrator and database secrets.
6. Start the Compose stack
From the project directory, start the services in detached mode:
cd /opt/seafile
docker compose up -dFirst-run initialization can take longer than later restarts while the database and Seafile data structures are created. Follow the logs rather than assuming that a running container means setup is complete:

docker compose logs -fStop following logs with Ctrl+C; detached containers continue running. If a service repeatedly exits, inspect that service specifically with docker compose logs --tail=200 SERVICE_NAME, using the service name shown by docker compose ps. Correct the environment value or storage permission that caused the failure, then restart with docker compose up -d.
Put Seafile behind HTTPS before sharing
Point DNS to the VPS
Create the DNS record for your chosen hostname and point it to the VPS’s public address. Wait for the record to resolve from outside the VPS. A certificate request cannot succeed while the hostname still points elsewhere or is blocked by a firewall.
Run the supplied Caddy configuration
The official deployment includes caddy.yml for the reverse-proxy component. Use the hostname configured in .env, ensure the VPS allows the web ports required for certificate issuance and browser traffic, and start or update the stack with the Caddy service included.

Caddy can obtain and renew certificates automatically when DNS and inbound connectivity are correct. Verify the certificate from an external browser, not only from the VPS itself. Open the HTTPS hostname, sign in with the administrator account, and confirm that the browser reports a valid certificate before creating any public link.
Check every access path
- Browser login works at the HTTPS hostname without a certificate warning.
- A library can be created and a small file uploaded and downloaded.
- A share link opens from a separate network or private browsing session.
- HTTP requests are redirected or otherwise prevented from exposing credentials and file traffic in clear text.
HTTPS protects browser, client and share-link traffic in transit. It does not replace account permissions, firewall rules, updates or backups.
Connect desktop, command-line and mobile clients
Install the official Seafile desktop, CLI or mobile client only after the server works through its HTTPS hostname. Enter the hostname exactly as it appears in the certificate, authenticate with a test account, and create a separate test library.
Desktop synchronization test
- Sign in to the desktop client using the HTTPS server address.
- Select the test library and a local synchronization folder.
- Create a small file locally and wait for it to appear in the web interface.
- Edit or delete the file through the web interface and confirm that the client receives the change.
Mobile and CLI checks
On mobile, sign in over the same HTTPS address and open the test library. For the command-line client, authenticate against the same server and perform a small upload and download. These checks expose hostname, certificate, permissions and firewall mistakes before they affect production data.

A Seafile backup is incomplete if it copies only documents or only the database. Include both persistent locations:
/opt/seafile-data, which contains the synchronized file data./opt/seafile-mysql, which contains the database state needed to describe users, libraries, permissions and metadata.
Copy backups to storage outside the VPS so a host failure, accidental deletion or provider outage does not destroy the only copy. Protect backup access as carefully as the production server, and encrypt backups when your threat model requires it.

Make restoration a tested procedure
- Document the VPS distribution, Docker and Compose versions, Seafile manual version, project directory and persistent paths.
- Store the production
.env, Compose files and recovery credentials in a protected location separate from the VPS. - Schedule backups of both persistent locations and record their completion.
- Periodically restore the database and data to an isolated test host or maintenance environment.
- Start the matching Compose version, sign in, open libraries, download files and verify a share link.
A restore test proves more than a successful copy job: it confirms that your credentials, configuration, database and file data work together.
Operate the VPS safely
Updates and upgrades
Keep the host operating system, Docker components and Seafile images updated according to the current Seafile manual. Before changing a version, record the current Compose files and environment, confirm a recent restorable backup, and read the version-specific upgrade notes. Do not replace a working configuration with files from an unrelated manual version.
Monitoring
Watch disk growth, memory pressure, failed containers and certificate renewal. A nearly full data volume can stop uploads and database operations; memory pressure can cause containers to restart; a failed certificate renewal can make every client appear offline even though the VPS is running.
Credential rotation
Rotate administrator, database and SSH credentials on a schedule appropriate to your risk. Update the environment file and any dependent services together, then verify browser login and client synchronization. Keep recovery credentials offline or in a protected password manager rather than in shell history or a public repository.
Access control
Use least-privilege accounts, strong unique passwords and key-based SSH. Limit administrative ports with firewall rules, avoid exposing database services directly, and review shared links and library permissions regularly. A share link should be treated as a credential: revoke it when its audience or purpose ends.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The site does not open
Check the DNS record from an external network, confirm the VPS address, verify that the web ports are allowed, and inspect the Caddy and Seafile container logs. If DNS still points to an old address, certificate issuance and browser access will fail regardless of the Compose status.
Caddy cannot obtain a certificate
Confirm that the hostname in .env exactly matches the DNS name, that DNS has propagated, and that inbound certificate-validation traffic reaches the VPS. Correct the firewall or DNS problem, then review the Caddy logs and retry.
Containers restart or initialization never finishes
Inspect docker compose ps and the logs for the first service that exits. Check available disk and memory, verify database credentials, and confirm that the persistent directories exist and are writable by the containers. Do not delete the data directories while troubleshooting; they contain the state you are trying to preserve.
Files disappear after a restart
This usually indicates that a container was using ephemeral storage or that the persistent path changed. Compare the volume settings in .env and seafile-server.yml with the locations that contain your data. Restore the intended mounts before creating more files, and take a backup of the existing directories.

Use the HTTPS hostname rather than an IP address, check the certificate from the client’s network, and confirm that the account can open the test library in a browser. An incorrect hostname, expired certificate, clock error or firewall rule can look like a synchronization problem.
