You can self-host Parse Server on a VPS by running a supported Node.js release, Parse Server, and either MongoDB or PostgreSQL. Put Parse behind an HTTPS reverse proxy, keep the database private, protect the master key, and configure permissions before allowing public traffic. Docker is optional; a native Node.js service is equally valid when you can manage upgrades and restarts yourself.

What a production Parse Server VPS contains

A reliable deployment has four layers:

  • VPS and operating system: provides compute, memory, storage and networking.
  • Reverse proxy: terminates TLS, redirects HTTP to HTTPS and forwards requests to Parse Server on a private interface.
  • Parse Server: the Node.js process that exposes REST, SDK and optional GraphQL APIs.
  • Database and file storage: MongoDB or PostgreSQL stores application data; uploads use GridFS, S3, GCS or the local filesystem.

Choose a DNS name for the API and keep the database bound to the VPS or a private network. Public traffic should reach only the reverse proxy’s HTTPS port. Parse’s deployment guidance warns that exposing a default installation without adapting its configuration can cause intrusions, data leaks and unexpected costs.

Prerequisites and version compatibility

Install a Node.js and database version listed as compatible with the Parse Server major version you intend to run. Compatibility changes as Parse Server releases, so pin the Parse major version and check the project’s current compatibility table before every upgrade.

Component Compatibility stated for the corresponding Parse releases How to use the information
Node.js 20 Through Parse Server 9.x Use when your application is pinned to a supported 9.x release.
Node.js 22 Through Parse Server 10.x Verify the exact 10.x release before upgrading.
Node.js 24 Through Parse Server 11.x Use only with a Parse release that lists Node 24.
MongoDB 7 Through Parse Server 9.x Check driver and server compatibility during upgrades.
MongoDB 8 Through Parse Server 10.x Confirm the selected Parse 10.x version supports it.
PostgreSQL 16 Through Parse Server 9.x Use PostGIS as well when location features are required.

Do not infer a universal CPU, RAM or request-per-second minimum from these versions. No authoritative Parse source publishes one. Size the VPS from expected request rate, database growth, file volume and observed memory, CPU and disk usage.

Native Node.js or Docker?

Choice Best fit Advantages Trade-offs
Native Node.js A small team comfortable with a Linux service manager Fewer layers, direct logs and straightforward debugging You must manage Node.js, npm dependencies, service restarts and repeatable upgrades.
Docker Teams that want immutable images and consistent deployments Repeatable builds, isolated dependencies and simple rollback to a prior image You still need to manage persistent volumes, secrets, logs, networking and image updates.

Neither method changes Parse’s security requirements. In both cases, bind Parse to loopback or a private network and let the reverse proxy handle Internet-facing HTTPS.

Choose MongoDB or PostgreSQL

MongoDB

MongoDB is the preferred choice for many Parse deployments and works naturally with Parse’s document-oriented data model. GridFS is available for file storage. A managed MongoDB service can reduce patching and backup work, but it creates another bill and requires private networking or carefully restricted database access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PostgreSQL

PostgreSQL is a good fit when you expect a stable, relational schema or already operate PostgreSQL successfully. PostGIS is required for Parse geographic and location features. You remain responsible for indexes with either database; Parse does not remove the need to design and monitor them.

One database on the VPS or a managed service

Running the database on the same VPS gives you one bill and low network latency, but a VPS failure affects both application and data. A managed database improves failure isolation and can provide maintenance automation, while adding service cost, network configuration and a second provider dependency.

Provision the VPS and network safely

  1. Register a DNS name such as api.example.com and point it to the VPS address.
  2. Create a non-root administrative account and use SSH keys. Disable password SSH login after confirming key access.
  3. Apply operating-system security updates and enable automatic security updates where appropriate.
  4. Allow inbound SSH only from administration addresses when possible, and allow TCP 443 for HTTPS. Keep TCP 80 only if the proxy needs it to redirect HTTP or complete certificate validation.
  5. Do not open MongoDB’s or PostgreSQL’s public port. Bind the database to localhost or a private interface and restrict its firewall rules to the Parse host.
  6. Reserve sufficient disk for the database, logs, temporary uploads and backups. Configure monitoring before production traffic arrives.

Use a maintained reverse proxy such as Nginx, Caddy or another trusted equivalent. The proxy should forward requests to a local Parse listener, preserve the intended host and forwarding headers, and redirect every HTTP request to HTTPS.

Install Parse Server natively

The following sequence assumes a Debian-like Linux VPS; adapt package commands to your distribution.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install the Node.js major version compatible with your pinned Parse Server release. Confirm both versions:
node --version
npm --version
  1. Create a dedicated application directory and install the chosen Parse Server major version rather than an unpinned latest release:
sudo mkdir -p /opt/parse-server
sudo chown "$USER":"$USER" /opt/parse-server
cd /opt/parse-server
npm init -y
npm install parse-server@<major-or-approved-version>
  1. Create a configuration file outside your source repository, or provide the values through a secret manager and environment variables. The minimum settings are appId, masterKey and databaseURI.
  2. Run Parse locally first and verify that it answers on the loopback address. Then create a systemd unit, a Supervisor configuration or another service-manager definition with automatic restart, a dedicated user and restricted file permissions.
  3. Expose the service only to the reverse proxy, normally on 127.0.0.1:1337. Do not bind it directly to every public interface unless a private-network design specifically requires that.

Run Parse Server with Docker

Docker is useful when the image, configuration and deployment process are versioned together. Store secrets using the VPS’s secret-management facility or protected environment files; do not commit them to an image or repository.

docker run --name my-parse-server
  -p 127.0.0.1:1337:1337
  -v config-vol:/parse-server/config
  --restart unless-stopped
  -d parse-server
  --appId APPLICATION_ID
  --masterKey MASTER_KEY
  --databaseURI mongodb://user:password@db-host/dbname

The databaseURI argument is required. Replace every example value, use a strong randomly generated master key, and avoid placing credentials in shell history where your operational policy does not permit it. Persist configuration and any local file-storage directory with volumes. Keep container logs outside ephemeral storage or forward them to a durable logging system.

Build the Parse configuration

At minimum, define the following settings:

Setting Purpose Operational rule
appId Identifies the Parse application. Keep it consistent across clients, Cloud Code and deployment environments.
masterKey High-privilege credential that bypasses normal application security. Keep it server-side, restrict its file permissions, rotate it through a planned process and never ship it in a client app.
databaseURI Connection string for MongoDB or PostgreSQL. Use private connectivity, least-privilege database credentials and encrypted transport where supported.
serverURL Public URL clients use, commonly ending in /parse. Use the final HTTPS hostname, not the loopback address.
Cloud Code path Loads trusted server-side functions and triggers. Deploy it with the same release process as the Parse configuration.
File adapter settings Selects where uploaded files are stored. Choose local storage, GridFS, S3 or GCS deliberately and back it up accordingly.

The master key is equivalent to root-level authority over the application. Client keys are not secrets because they are distributed with client software. Put sensitive actions and business rules in trusted Cloud Code, where the master key can be used without exposing it to users.

Configure HTTPS, forwarding and firewall rules

  1. Issue a certificate for the DNS name and configure the reverse proxy to listen on HTTPS.
  2. Redirect HTTP to HTTPS and enable automatic certificate renewal.
  3. Proxy https://api.example.com/parse to the local Parse listener, preserving the required host and forwarding headers.
  4. Configure Parse’s proxy-trust behavior to match the actual number and identity of trusted proxies. Trusting arbitrary forwarded headers lets clients spoof their address.
  5. Apply rate limits and audit rules to the real client IP after forwarding headers have been validated.
  6. Use a firewall to deny all unnecessary inbound ports. Keep Dashboard and any GraphQL playground on a private network or behind strong authentication and an administrator allowlist.

An exposed GraphQL playground can allow visitors to read or change application data. Do not publish it merely because GraphQL is enabled.

Harden the application before launch

Class and object permissions

Review Class-Level Permissions for every class. Decide explicitly who may find, query, create, update and delete records. Use object ACLs where access differs by user or group. Do not treat an obscure class name as protection.

Schema control

Set allowClientClassCreation: false after the initial schema is established. For Parse Server 5.0.0 and later, consider enforcePrivateUsers: true so newly created users do not receive public read access by default.

Trusted business logic

Place privileged writes, payment-like decisions, role changes and validation rules in Cloud Code. Never ask a client to submit the master key or rely on a client-enforced restriction.

Rate limiting

Parse Server 6.0.0 and later supports rateLimit rules for server routes, Cloud Functions and beforeSave triggers. A rule can specify the request path, HTTP methods, time window, request count, an error message and optional Redis storage. Enforce limits as far from the server as possible, such as at a cloud or CDN edge, because an application-level limit is reached only after traffic has consumed VPS resources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Select file storage deliberately

Adapter Use when Important consequence
FSAdapter A single VPS and modest file volume are acceptable. Simple to operate, but migration, redundancy and disk recovery are your responsibility.
GridFSBucketAdapter Files should live in MongoDB storage. Database backup and storage growth include file data.
S3Adapter You want independently scalable object storage. Configure bucket permissions, lifecycle policies and a backup or replication plan.
GCSAdapter Your infrastructure already uses Google Cloud Storage. Use least-privilege service credentials and plan for object recovery.

Local files are convenient for a single-server installation but are not automatically durable. Object storage separates file availability from VPS disks and usually simplifies migration, at the cost of another service and access policy.

Verify health and operate the service

Liveness endpoint

Probe GET /parse/health from the reverse proxy or monitoring system. A healthy response is {"status":"ok"}. Startup states include initialized, starting, ok and error. Treat this as a liveness signal, not proof that every business operation works.

Useful monitoring

  • Database connectivity and query latency.
  • Disk capacity, inode use, memory pressure and CPU saturation.
  • HTTP status rates, slow requests, authentication failures and Cloud Code errors.
  • Backup completion and restoration tests.
  • A synthetic transaction that creates, reads and removes a disposable record in a non-production class.

Use a service manager or container restart policy, retain logs outside disposable containers and alert before disk exhaustion prevents writes.

Backups, schema changes and upgrades

Back up before changing the schema

Take a full database backup before deploying schema changes. After deployment, check the resulting classes, fields, indexes and CLPs. If CI/CD is the sole schema authority, set lockSchemas: true to prevent clients or Dashboard from changing the schema outside that process.

Back up files as well as records

A database dump does not necessarily restore files stored in a local directory or object bucket. Include the selected file adapter’s data in the backup and periodically perform a restoration into an isolated environment.

Upgrade in stages

  1. Pin the target Parse Server major version and verify its Node.js and database compatibility.
  2. Take database and file backups and record the current image, package lockfile and configuration.
  3. Deploy the new version to a staging VPS or isolated service using representative data.
  4. Check /parse/health, authentication, reads, writes, Cloud Functions, file uploads and any geographic queries.
  5. Switch production traffic only after those checks pass, then watch errors, latency, memory and database load.
  6. Keep the previous image or package and a tested rollback procedure available.

There is no universal zero-downtime recipe for every VPS layout. Rollout order, connection draining and spare capacity depend on your proxy, database and traffic pattern.

How much VPS capacity do you need?

Start with workload measurements rather than a generic “Parse Server minimum.” Estimate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Peak concurrent requests and sustained request rate.
  • Database size, index size and expected monthly growth.
  • File volume, upload size and retention period.
  • Cloud Code CPU and memory behavior.
  • Backup space and the amount of spare disk needed for upgrades.

Choose a small VPS only when monitoring can detect saturation and you have a migration plan. Increase memory when the database and Node.js process compete for cache and heap; increase CPU when profiling shows sustained compute pressure; increase disk or move files to object storage when uploads dominate capacity. Re-measure after launch instead of treating an unverified size as a guarantee.

Deployment decision checklist

  • Native or Docker: choose native for fewer moving parts, Docker for repeatable images and rollbacks.
  • MongoDB or PostgreSQL: choose MongoDB for a document-oriented deployment, PostgreSQL for a stable relational schema; add PostGIS for location features.
  • Local files or object storage: choose local storage for simplicity on one VPS, object storage for durability, independent scaling and easier migration.
  • Single VPS or separate services: choose a single host for control and lower complexity, separate managed services for failure isolation and reduced patching.

Common failure symptoms and fixes

Parse starts, then exits

Check the service log for an unsupported Node.js runtime, malformed configuration or an unreachable database. Confirm the pinned versions against the compatibility table and test the database URI from the VPS.

Clients receive a URL or TLS error

Verify that serverURL exactly matches the public HTTPS path, that the proxy forwards the /parse prefix correctly and that the certificate covers the DNS name.

Health is “ok” but requests fail

The health endpoint is liveness only. Inspect database latency, CLPs, ACLs, Cloud Code exceptions, proxy timeouts and application logs. Run a representative authenticated operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Uploads disappear after a restart

You are likely using an unpersisted local directory or an ephemeral container volume. Attach durable storage, restore the intended file adapter configuration and test a backup restore.

Rate limits block legitimate users or miss abusive traffic

Check proxy trust and forwarded client-IP handling first. Then tune path, method, window and count rules, and place coarse limits at the edge before traffic reaches Parse.

Production launch checklist

  • Supported Node.js, Parse Server and database versions are pinned.
  • appId, masterKey, databaseURI and HTTPS serverURL are configured.
  • The master key is absent from client code, repositories and public logs.
  • The database is private and the firewall exposes only required ports.
  • HTTPS redirects, certificate renewal and proxy trust settings are tested.
  • CLPs, ACLs, private-user behavior and client class creation are reviewed.
  • Dashboard and GraphQL playground access is restricted.
  • Rate limiting exists at the edge and, where needed, in Parse Server.
  • File storage is persistent and included in backup and restore tests.
  • /parse/health, database metrics, disk, memory, errors and backups are monitored.
  • A rollback package and a tested schema-change procedure are documented.
