You can self-host Netdata entirely on your own infrastructure: install the Netdata Agent on a supported server or run the official container, then open its local dashboard at http://NODE:19999. Netdata Cloud is optional. A single Agent can remain local-only, while Parents or Cloud provide ways to view several Agents together.
The practical choice is between a direct installation, which gives the Agent straightforward access to the host, and Docker, which improves isolation but requires the documented mounts and privileges for complete host visibility. This guide covers deployment, port security, multi-server layouts, data handling, and the failures most often caused by network or container configuration.

What self-hosted Netdata includes
A self-hosted deployment centers on the Netdata Agent. The Agent collects metrics and other telemetry on the machine where it runs and serves a web dashboard and API over TCP port 19999 by default. Opening http://localhost:19999 on that machine should display the local interface.
Netdata Cloud is not required for collection or for a one-node dashboard. You can keep the Agent and its data on your own server and never connect that node to Cloud. Cloud is an optional coordination layer for organizations that want a unified view and notifications across many Agents; it queries data held by the Agents and Parents rather than replacing them as the primary data store.

A Netdata Parent is an Agent configured to aggregate data from other Agents. Parents are useful when many servers sit behind separate network zones or when you want one internal endpoint to query. The resulting architecture can be entirely self-managed, or you can add Cloud for a broader view while retaining Agents and Parents as the places where telemetry is held.
Choose a deployment method
| Option | Host visibility | Isolation and upgrades | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct Agent installation | Direct access to the operating system, services, and local interfaces is the uncomplicated path. | Uses the platform’s normal service and package-management workflow; rollback follows that platform’s package process. | Linux, Windows, macOS, or FreeBSD servers where complete host monitoring is the priority. |
| Official Docker container | Complete host monitoring depends on the mounts and privileges specified in Netdata’s container documentation. A minimal container will see only a fraction of the host. | Provides process isolation and image-based replacement; upgrades and rollback depend on how you manage image versions and persistent configuration. | Docker hosts, immutable systems, or teams that standardize services as containers. |
| Kubernetes or cloud deployment | Uses the integration pattern documented for the selected Kubernetes, AWS, Azure, or GCP environment. | Operational details depend on the orchestrator and cloud platform. | Clusters and cloud estates that need platform-specific collectors and topology. |
Use direct installation when the Agent should inspect the host with the fewest boundaries. Choose Docker when isolation and repeatable container operations matter more, and budget time to grant the container the visibility it needs. Rootless Docker can further restrict collectors that require elevated privileges, so it is not automatically equivalent to a privileged deployment.
Prepare the host and network
Confirm the monitoring target
- Pick the actual system whose CPU, memory, disks, network interfaces, services, and application telemetry you need to observe: a physical server, VM, Docker host, Windows server, macOS system, FreeBSD machine, Kubernetes environment, or cloud account.
- Decide whether the node is local-only, reachable by an operations subnet, or intended to feed a Parent or Cloud. This decision determines which interfaces and firewalls must allow TCP 19999.
- Record the trust boundary before installation. Port 19999 exposes an administration interface and should not be made public merely to simplify remote viewing.
Plan storage and ownership
Telemetry is held on Agents and Parents. Netdata states that metric samples, logs, traces, and database query text remain there, or in customer object storage when that option is configured. Identify who can administer those machines and how their disks are protected before enabling collectors that may observe sensitive workloads.
Check the selected platform guide
Netdata publishes separate installation paths for Linux, Windows, macOS, and FreeBSD, as well as Kubernetes and the major cloud platforms. Use the guide matching the operating system and deployment mode rather than applying a command written for another platform. Windows behavior, including whether a local dashboard is available, differs by plan and deployment mode; verify that detail for the plan you selected.

Install the Agent directly
Direct installation is the most straightforward route when the monitoring process should run as a native service.
- Select the platform guide. Open Netdata’s documented installer for your operating system and edition. Confirm that the host meets that guide’s prerequisites and that you have permission to install and run a system service.
- Run the supported installer. Follow the platform-specific installation procedure exactly. Do not substitute a package from an unrelated distribution or copy a service definition intended for another operating system.
- Check the service state. Use the operating system’s normal service-management view to confirm that the Netdata Agent started and is configured for the desired restart behavior. If it stops immediately, inspect the service log before changing firewall rules.
- Test locally first. On the monitored host, open
http://localhost:19999. A working dashboard proves that the Agent is running and listening locally, but it does not prove that another machine can reach it. - Test from the management network. From an approved administrator workstation, use the host name or address in
http://NODE:19999. If the local test works and the remote test fails, troubleshoot routing and firewall policy rather than reinstalling the Agent. - Configure collectors and alerts. Enable only the collectors needed for the services you operate, then set alert thresholds and notification behavior in the Agent configuration. A standalone deployment keeps these dashboards and alert settings with that system.
- Document the node. Record the host identity, operating system, Agent version, listening address, allowed management networks, and any credentials or access controls used. This information is essential when you add the node to a Parent later.
Run Netdata in Docker
The official Netdata container exposes port 19999 by default, but publishing that port alone does not create full host monitoring. The container must receive the host mounts and privileges described in Netdata’s container instructions. Those settings allow collectors to read the host resources that are outside the container’s own namespace.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Choose the Docker host. Install the container on the machine whose resources you want to observe, or deliberately configure it to observe a remote target according to Netdata’s supported architecture.
- Use the official image and documented configuration. Obtain the current image reference, required host mounts, environment settings, and privilege requirements from Netdata’s container guide. Avoid an improvised minimal run command: missing mounts produce an apparently healthy dashboard with incomplete data.
- Publish the dashboard port deliberately. Map the container’s port 19999 to a host port only where administrators need it. If the dashboard is for an internal network, restrict the host firewall to that network instead of publishing it to every interface.
- Persist configuration as appropriate. Keep the Agent configuration and any required state outside the disposable container layer so that replacing an image does not erase your collector or alert settings. Follow the paths and persistence method documented for the official image.
- Start and inspect the container. Confirm that the container remains running, then open
http://localhost:19999on the Docker host. Review the Agent’s own logs for permission errors or collectors that could not initialize. - Compare expected and visible resources. Check that host CPU, memory, disks, network interfaces, containers, and services appear as intended. If only the container’s resources are shown, revisit mounts and privileges before treating the deployment as complete.
- Decide how upgrades will work. Keep a known-good image reference and configuration backup, test a replacement container, and retain a rollback path. The exact image-tag and volume procedure depends on your Docker operations, but the principle is the same: never make an untested image the only recoverable version.
Why rootless Docker can show less data
Rootless Docker intentionally limits the privileges available to the container. Collectors that need elevated access may therefore return partial data or fail. If a security policy requires rootless operation, accept that limitation and identify which metrics are unavailable; do not infer that an empty chart represents a healthy zero value.
Verify access and secure port 19999
The local dashboard and API use TCP port 19999 by default. Treat that port as an administration interface, not as a public website.

- Local-only node: Keep the service reachable from the host itself and do not add an external firewall exception. This is the narrowest exposure for a single-machine setup.
- Internal remote access: Permit TCP 19999 only from the trusted management subnet, VPN address range, or Parent that must query the node. Apply the rule on both the host firewall and any upstream security group.
- Parent topology: Allow the Parent to reach each child Agent on the required port, while limiting ordinary user access to the Parent’s dashboard. This reduces the number of nodes that need to be reachable by operators.
- Cloud-connected topology: Follow Netdata’s documented connection and access controls. Do not open inbound access broadly just because Cloud is enabled.
If a remote browser cannot connect, test in this order: confirm the Agent is listening locally, verify the node address resolves to the intended machine, check the host firewall, check upstream network policy, and confirm that the published Docker port maps to 19999. A timeout usually indicates reachability or filtering; an immediate refusal usually indicates that no process is listening on the addressed port.
Configure collectors, dashboards, and alerts
After the dashboard loads, configuration determines whether the installation is useful. Start with the systems that affect availability and capacity, then add application-specific collectors.
Recommended Free Tools
Build a useful first view
- Verify CPU utilization, memory pressure, disk capacity and latency, network traffic, and system load for the host.
- Add service or application collectors only when their data will influence an operational decision.
- Give each node a stable, recognizable name. Ambiguous names become a serious problem once a Parent or Cloud view contains many machines.
- Set alert thresholds around symptoms that require action, and account for normal maintenance windows before enabling notifications.
Keep alert ownership clear
A standalone Agent keeps alert configuration with that system. In a multi-node design, decide whether alerts should be maintained independently on each Agent, centrally through a Parent arrangement, or through Cloud notifications. Write down who receives an alert and which system retains the authoritative configuration so that a failed central component does not silently remove local coverage.
Monitor multiple servers from one view
| Design | How data is viewed | Network pattern | Data-control implications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Independent Agents | Open each node’s dashboard separately. | Administrators need access to every node on TCP 19999. | Maximum separation, but no single dashboard or central alert workflow. |
| Agents with a Netdata Parent | Use the Parent as an aggregation point for child Agents. | Child nodes communicate with the Parent; operators can often work from the Parent’s internal endpoint. | Telemetry remains on Agents and Parents, which you operate and protect. |
| Agents or Parents connected to Netdata Cloud | Cloud provides a unified view and notifications while querying data held on Agents and Parents. | Follow the documented Agent-to-Cloud connectivity and keep node firewalls scoped to trusted paths. | Cloud is optional; review the service’s data-handling and organizational requirements before enabling it. |
When a Parent is the better choice
Use Parents when you need an internal aggregation layer, have many sites connected by controlled links, or want to keep the primary monitoring path inside your own network. Place a Parent where it can reach its child Agents without exposing every child to the user network. Size and redundancy decisions depend on the number of nodes and retention requirements; the supplied product documentation does not establish a universal node limit, so validate the design against your estate.

When Cloud adds value
Cloud is useful when operators need one view across separate Parents, locations, or accounts, or when centrally managed notifications are important. It does not make a local Agent unnecessary: the Agent continues to collect data, and Netdata states that Cloud queries the data held on Agents and Parents in real time. A local-only deployment remains valid when policy requires telemetry and dashboards to stay on premises.
Data handling and licensing
Netdata describes the Agent as GPLv3+ software. The bundled dashboard uses the separate NCUL1 license, so review both licenses when packaging Netdata into a commercial product, appliance, or internal platform with redistribution requirements.
For privacy and retention planning, account for more than numeric metrics. Netdata says metric samples, logs, traces, and database query text are stored on Agents and Parents, or in customer object storage when configured. Limit filesystem and network access to those systems, protect backups, and classify database query text and logs according to your organization’s policy.

Updates
For a direct installation, use the supported update process for the host operating system and Netdata’s current Agent guidance. For Docker, update by replacing the container with a tested image while preserving the documented configuration and state. In both cases, record the previous version and keep a rollback method before changing production monitoring.

Backups and recovery
Back up the Agent and Parent configuration that defines collectors, alert rules, node identity, and access controls. A dashboard that loads after a failure but has lost its alert configuration is not a complete recovery. Test restoration on a non-production node so you know which files or volumes must be restored and which settings are regenerated.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Capacity and retention review
Watch the monitoring system itself. Excessive collectors, long retention, or many child Agents can increase CPU, memory, storage, and network use. Remove collectors that do not answer an operational question, and place Parents where their storage and connectivity match the retention and query workload you expect.
Troubleshooting guide
The dashboard does not open locally
- Confirm the Agent service or container is running.
- Check the Agent log for startup, configuration, or permission errors.
- Verify that the process is listening on the expected local port 19999.
- For Docker, confirm that the host port is mapped to the container’s port 19999.
- Correct the configuration or container privileges, then restart using the supported procedure.
Local access works but remote access times out
Check the host firewall first, then upstream security groups, routing, VPN policy, and name resolution. Permit TCP 19999 only from the intended management source. If the node is bound to a loopback or restricted interface, adjust the documented access configuration rather than exposing all interfaces indiscriminately.
The page opens but host charts are empty
This symptom is common with an under-privileged container. Compare the deployment with the official required mounts and privileges, and remember that rootless Docker may be unable to collect resources requiring elevated access. Also verify that the relevant collectors are enabled and that the monitored service exposes the data they need.
Only one server appears in a multi-node view
Test connectivity from each child Agent to its Parent or Cloud connection, check that every node has a unique and stable identity, and inspect the child and Parent logs for authentication or network errors. A working local dashboard proves only that one Agent is healthy; it does not prove aggregation is configured.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWindows does not show the expected local interface
Windows behavior varies by plan and deployment mode. Recheck the selected plan’s documentation for local-dashboard availability instead of assuming that the Linux workflow applies unchanged.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Choose direct installation if uncomplicated host visibility is more important than container isolation.
- Choose Docker if your operations model requires containers, but allocate the documented mounts, privileges, and persistent configuration.
- Keep a single node local-only when no centralized view or remote access is needed.
- Add a Parent when you need an internally controlled aggregation point for several Agents or network zones.
- Add Cloud only when its unified view or notifications justify the connectivity and data-governance review.
- Protect TCP 19999 with host and network firewalls; never treat the default port as safe for public exposure.
- Verify data visibility after installation, especially for containers and rootless deployments.
- Document versions, configuration ownership, backups, and rollback before relying on alerts for production decisions.
Final validation before relying on alerts
- Open the local dashboard and confirm current timestamps and expected host resources.
- Test the dashboard from each approved management location.
- Trigger a harmless test condition or use the documented alert test method to prove notifications reach the intended recipients.
- For Docker, verify that host-level resources—not just the container—are visible.
- For Parents or Cloud, confirm that every intended node is present and that its data updates in the aggregate view.
- Review firewall rules, access controls, retention, and the storage location of logs, traces, query text, and metric data.
- Record the recovery procedure and the last known-good Agent or container version.
