Self-host Jenkins by running the official jenkins/jenkins image as a controller, storing /var/jenkins_home on durable storage, and managing controller settings with the Jenkins Configuration as Code (JCasC) plugin. Pin the image and plugins, keep the YAML in source control, and choose a deliberate way for build jobs to reach Docker rather than exposing the host socket by default.
What a Docker-based Jenkins installation contains
A self-hosted deployment has three operational parts:
- Controller container: the official
jenkins/jenkinsimage contains the current Jenkins LTS release and is the supported starting point for a production container deployment. - Persistent Jenkins state: Jenkins stores jobs, plugins, configuration, credentials metadata, and other controller data below
/var/jenkins_home. Treat this path like a database, not like disposable container storage. - Build execution: jobs can run on the controller for a small installation or on agents. If a pipeline must build Docker images, it also needs a defined Docker daemon connection.
Replacing a container without preserving /var/jenkins_home creates a new, empty Jenkins instance. Replacing the container while retaining that volume preserves the controller’s state, subject to compatibility between the Jenkins, Java, and plugin versions you select.
Capacity, storage, and host prerequisites
Install Docker Engine or Docker Desktop on a supported host and configure it for the account that will operate Jenkins. The Jenkins project’s current Docker guidance lists these capacity levels:

| Deployment level | Memory | Drive space | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum installation | 256 MB RAM | 1 GB | Absolute minimums for Jenkins itself; they leave little room for plugins, build workspaces, logs, or concurrent jobs. |
| Jenkins in a Docker container | Not stated as a separate figure | 10 GB recommended | The project recommends at least 10 GB of drive space for a container deployment. |
| Small team | 4 GB or more RAM | 50 GB or more | A practical starting point when several users, plugins, and builds share the controller. |
These are installation guidelines, not performance guarantees. Build tools, workspaces, archived artifacts, logs, and Docker image layers can consume more space than Jenkins itself. Monitor the filesystem that holds the Jenkins volume and the filesystem used by any Docker daemon that performs builds.
Choose durable storage before starting the container
A Docker named volume is the simplest durable boundary for a single host. A bind mount to a host directory can fit an existing backup or storage policy, but it requires you to manage ownership, permissions, filesystem capacity, and access controls yourself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNamed-volume approach
- Create the volume with
docker volume create jenkins_home. - Include
-v jenkins_home:/var/jenkins_homewhenever you create or replace the controller container. - Back up the volume before Jenkins, plugin, or operating-system upgrades.
Host-directory approach
- Create a dedicated directory on storage covered by your backup policy.
- Mount that directory to
/var/jenkins_homewith a bind mount. - Verify that the container can read and write the directory, and that unrelated host users cannot browse credentials or job data.
Do not put Jenkins state on an anonymous volume or rely on the writable layer of the container. The container is replaceable; the mounted state is the asset you must recover.
Launch the Jenkins controller container
Pin the image tag you have approved rather than silently moving between releases. The following pattern uses the LTS channel, a named volume, and a restart policy:
docker volume create jenkins_home
docker run -d
--name jenkins
--restart=on-failure
-p 8080:8080
-v jenkins_home:/var/jenkins_home
jenkins/jenkins:lts
For a controlled environment, replace the moving LTS tag with the exact Jenkins image tag or digest selected through your change process. Publish only the web and agent endpoints your design requires; do not expose management ports to networks that do not need them. If you use a host directory, replace the volume mount with a bind mount such as -v /srv/jenkins_home:/var/jenkins_home after preparing and securing that directory.
The restart policy helps the container return after a process failure, but it is not a backup or an availability design. Monitor the host, Docker daemon, filesystem, and Jenkins logs separately.

Complete the first-run setup
- Open the published Jenkins web address in a browser.
- Complete the setup wizard and create the first administrator account.
- Install only the plugins you need initially. Record the selected plugin versions so the installation can be recreated.
- Confirm that a test job can start, write a workspace, and save its result.
- Verify that restarting or recreating the container with the same
jenkins_homevolume returns the same jobs and configuration.
Keep the controller image and plugin list under change control. A reproducible deployment is not just a Docker command: it is the combination of the image version, plugin versions, mounted state, JCasC files, and any external Docker or agent dependencies.
Introduce Jenkins Configuration as Code
JCasC moves controller-level settings into YAML that can be reviewed and versioned. Install the Jenkins Configuration as Code plugin in the controller image or through Jenkins’ plugin manager, then set the CASC_JENKINS_CONFIG environment variable.
The variable accepts a YAML file, a directory, or a URL. When it points to a directory, JCasC recursively scans that directory for YAML files. A common mounted path is:
CASC_JENKINS_CONFIG=/var/jenkins_home/casc_configs/jenkins.yaml
For a container started with an external configuration directory, mount it and set the variable at launch:
docker run -d
--name jenkins
--restart=on-failure
-p 8080:8080
-v jenkins_home:/var/jenkins_home
-v "$PWD/casc_configs:/var/jenkins_home/casc_configs:ro"
-e CASC_JENKINS_CONFIG=/var/jenkins_home/casc_configs/jenkins.yaml
jenkins/jenkins:lts
The read-only mount prevents the running controller from modifying the checked-out configuration. If you bake the YAML and plugin installation into a custom image, keep the Dockerfile and source files in the same review process as the deployment definition.
Organize the configuration repository
A small repository can contain:
jenkins.yamlfor controller settings;- a plugin installation list or image build definition;
- Docker Compose, Kubernetes, or Docker run deployment files;
- documentation for required environment variables, certificates, and backup restoration.
Use JCasC for controller-level concerns such as the system message, security realm, authorization strategy, credentials references, nodes, and global tools. Keep application build logic in Jenkinsfiles stored with the application repositories. This separation lets a controller change be reviewed as infrastructure while a pipeline change is reviewed with the code it builds.

A minimal YAML file can establish a visible system message while leaving sensitive and site-specific settings to your approved configuration:
jenkins:
systemMessage: "Managed from version-controlled Configuration as Code"
Expand the file only with settings you intend to own through code. If an administrator changes a JCasC-managed value in the web interface, a later configuration reload or container replacement can overwrite that change.

JCasC is not an ordinary application settings file. The plugin documentation states that only Jenkins administrators can create or update a Jenkins instance using configuration-as-code files. Treat repository access, the mounted files, and the process that publishes them as administrator-level privileges.
- Require review for changes to the security realm, authorization strategy, credentials references, agents, and global tools.
- Limit who can write to the configuration repository and who can alter the container’s environment or mounts.
- Keep secrets out of unprotected YAML and avoid interpolating secret values into contexts where users or jobs can read them.
- Review authorization changes for privilege expansion before applying them to a live controller.
- Use credentials references rather than placing passwords, tokens, or private keys directly in source control.
A malformed or overly permissive security configuration can lock out administrators or grant users more access than intended. Test security changes on a copy of the Jenkins volume and retain a known-good configuration for recovery.
Decide how build jobs will reach Docker
The Jenkins controller container does not automatically gain a safe Docker build environment. Choose the daemon architecture before writing pipelines. The main options have different isolation and operational consequences.
| Architecture | How the job reaches Docker | Isolation and risk | Operational work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remote Docker daemon | The job connects to a separately managed Docker endpoint. | Keeps the controller away from the host socket; endpoint authentication and network controls become critical. | Operate the remote daemon, certificates or other authentication, network policy, and cleanup. |
| Host socket access | The container receives access to the host Docker socket. | Convenient, but jobs with socket access can often control the host Docker daemon; this is a powerful trust boundary. | Manage socket permissions and accept the security implications for every job that can use it. |
| Docker-in-Docker with TLS | Jenkins connects to a separate docker:dind service over a TLS-protected endpoint. |
Separates the build daemon from the host daemon, but the service and its privileges still require careful control. | Generate and rotate certificates, share the client certificate read-only, configure environment variables, and operate the service. |
Do not grant broad host privileges merely to make a failing build pass. Decide which jobs are trusted to build images, which registry credentials they may use, and where image layers and caches should live.

Use the TLS Docker-in-Docker pattern deliberately
The official Docker example uses a separate docker:dind service, TLS, shared certificates, and a Jenkins data volume. In that arrangement, the Jenkins-side client is configured with:
DOCKER_HOSTpointing to the Docker daemon endpoint;DOCKER_CERT_PATHpointing to the mounted client certificates;DOCKER_TLS_VERIFYenabling certificate verification;- a read-only mount for the client certificate directory.
This is one architecture, not a universal requirement. Before adopting it, decide how the service is started, how its certificates are created and rotated, how the daemon’s storage is cleaned, and which Jenkins jobs can reach it. A certificate mount that is writable by jobs undermines the intended boundary.
Connect pipelines through Docker Pipeline integration
Install and manage the Docker Pipeline integration that your Jenkinsfile expects. Pipeline steps such as docker.withDockerRegistry and docker.image use Docker Pipeline integration rather than the legacy Docker plugin.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A pipeline still needs a working daemon endpoint, credentials, and permissions. Separate these concerns:
- Use Jenkins credentials for registry authentication, referenced by an identifier rather than embedded in a Jenkinsfile.
- Use the selected daemon architecture to provide
DOCKER_HOST, TLS certificates, or socket access. - Build and tag images with a deterministic naming convention, then push only from stages that have the required registry permissions.
- Clean up intermediate images and workspaces according to the capacity of the daemon that performs the build.
Keep the Jenkinsfile in the application repository. JCasC should define the controller’s global Docker-related tools and credentials references, while the Jenkinsfile describes when an image is built, tested, tagged, and published.

Back up the state boundary
Back up /var/jenkins_home as a consistent unit, including job definitions, plugins, configuration, and credentials metadata. A volume snapshot or stopped-container copy is preferable to an ad hoc copy taken while files are changing. Document where the backup is stored and who can restore it.

Test upgrades on a copy
- Record the current image tag or digest, plugin versions, JCasC revision, and Docker integration settings.
- Clone or snapshot the Jenkins volume.
- Start a test controller with the candidate image and the copied volume.
- Check that Jenkins starts, JCasC loads, authentication and authorization behave as intended, agents connect, and representative jobs complete.
- Only then replace the production container while retaining the production volume.
Recover from a failed replacement
Stop the failed container, preserve its logs for diagnosis, and start the last approved image with the last known-good volume or snapshot. Do not initialize a fresh volume and then mistake the empty setup wizard for a successful recovery. If the failure followed a configuration change, roll back the JCasC revision as well as the image or plugin set.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The jobs and plugins disappeared
Inspect the container mounts and confirm that the expected named volume or host directory is attached to /var/jenkins_home. A typo in the volume name creates a new empty volume. Stop before writing new data if you suspect the original volume still exists.
JCasC appears to be ignored
Confirm that the JCasC plugin is installed, that CASC_JENKINS_CONFIG is present inside the controller, and that its value points to a file, directory, or reachable URL. For a directory, verify that the YAML files are below that directory and readable by Jenkins. Check the startup log for YAML parsing or configuration errors, then validate the change on a copy of the volume.
JCasC changed security unexpectedly
Review the exact revision that changed the security realm or authorization strategy. Restore the known-good configuration and volume if access was broadened or administrators were locked out. Restrict write access to the repository and deployment environment before attempting the change again.
A pipeline cannot connect to Docker
Identify which architecture the job is supposed to use. Check the Docker endpoint, DOCKER_HOST, DOCKER_CERT_PATH, and DOCKER_TLS_VERIFY values for a TLS daemon; confirm that the client certificate is mounted read-only and that the daemon is reachable from the job’s network. For socket access, verify the socket mount and permissions without expanding privileges beyond the trusted jobs.
The controller runs out of disk
Measure both Jenkins data and Docker daemon storage. Remove obsolete artifacts, workspaces, and image layers according to a retention policy, then increase the allocated storage if the workload requires it. The 10 GB container recommendation is a starting point, not a cap.
Production-readiness checklist
- Official
jenkins/jenkinsimage selected and pinned through change control. - Jenkins state mounted at
/var/jenkins_homeon a named volume or protected host storage. - Capacity sized for the workload, with at least the project’s 4 GB RAM and 50 GB drive guidance for a small team.
- Restart policy configured and host, Docker, and Jenkins monitoring in place.
- JCasC plugin installed;
CASC_JENKINS_CONFIGpoints to version-controlled YAML. - Security realm, authorization, credentials references, agents, and global tools reviewed as privileged code.
- Jenkinsfiles kept with application code rather than hidden in controller state.
- Docker build architecture chosen explicitly: remote daemon, socket, or TLS-enabled Docker-in-Docker.
- Registry credentials and Docker certificates protected, rotated, and excluded from job output.
- Backups of
/var/jenkins_homecreated and restoration tested on a copy. - Image, plugin, JCasC, and Docker integration upgrades tested before production replacement.
The practical operating model
The durable design is a small, reproducible system: an approved Jenkins LTS image, a persistent and backed-up /var/jenkins_home, JCasC YAML and plugin definitions in source control, and a separately governed Docker build path. Start with the official image, keep the controller’s privileges narrow, and test both configuration changes and volume recovery before relying on the installation for important delivery work.
