You can self-host Convex on a Coolify server, but not through a one-click Convex template. The practical route is to create a Docker Compose resource, expose Convex’s API, HTTP-action service, and dashboard through Coolify’s proxy, replace localhost settings with public HTTPS URLs, then generate an administrator key inside the backend container.
Use the official Convex self-hosted compose file when you want the project’s maintained defaults, or a Coolify-oriented community compose example when you need pre-wired proxy and storage settings. Treat the latter as an example rather than an official support document, and check every image, variable, and volume against the current Convex repository before deploying production data.
What you are deploying
A self-hosted Convex installation has a backend service, a dashboard, and your application. The backend serves the Convex API and HTTP actions. The dashboard provides the browser interface used to administer the instance. Your frontend or other application remains a separate Coolify resource or deployment and connects to the backend with environment variables.

Coolify does not replace Convex’s internal configuration. It supplies the server, Docker orchestration, TLS termination, domains, and deployment controls. Convex still needs a compose file, persistent volumes, correctly advertised origins, and an administrator key.

Requirements and sizing
Server
Plan for at least 2 GB of RAM and 2 CPU cores. A third-party sizing guide recommends 4 GB of RAM when PostgreSQL is running on the same host. Those figures are starting points, not capacity guarantees: workload, query volume, file uploads, dashboard use, backups, and other Coolify resources can raise requirements.
Domain names
Use separate HTTPS hostnames for the API, HTTP actions, and dashboard. Separate hostnames make the routing unambiguous and let you apply different access policies. You need DNS records pointing to the server before Coolify can issue certificates through its proxy.

Persistent storage
Attach persistent volumes to every stateful service in the compose file. A container restart must not remove the Convex database, object-storage data, or configuration that the compose file marks as persistent. Test a restore before treating the installation as production-ready.
Coolify access
You need permission to create a Docker Compose resource, configure domains, edit environment variables, view deployment logs, and open a terminal for the deployed resource. Coolify’s exact labels can change between releases, so use the current names shown in your dashboard.
Choose a compose file
Official Convex compose
The official Convex repository includes a self-hosted Docker compose file under self-hosted/docker. It is the better baseline when you want defaults maintained with Convex. Read the file before importing it: identify service names, exposed ports, volumes, database options, required variables, and image tags. Do not assume a variable name from an older tutorial still exists.
Coolify-oriented community compose
A community Coolify compose example wires the backend, dashboard, and a MinIO service for file storage. It is useful as a reference for Coolify routing and service names, but it is not an official Coolify or Convex guide. Review it line by line, pin image versions where appropriate, and remove services you do not need. The example’s instance-name setting is used for both the Convex instance and its PostgreSQL database.

Combining an older community file with a newer official file can produce incompatible service names, health checks, volumes, or environment variables. Start from one current compose file, then make only the changes required for Coolify, public domains, persistent storage, and your chosen database.
Create the Docker Compose resource in Coolify

Open the target project and server in Coolify and create a new Docker Compose resource. Choose the option that lets you paste or import a compose definition rather than selecting an application framework template.

Paste the reviewed Convex compose file. Preserve the service names, especially the backend service, because the administrator-key command uses that name.

Set the resource’s working directory and compose file location according to the current Coolify interface. If you store the file in a repository, grant Coolify read access and pin the branch or commit you intend to deploy.

Declare persistent volumes in the resource. Confirm in the rendered compose configuration that database and object-storage paths map to persistent host or Docker volumes, not ephemeral container paths.

Save the resource without deploying yet. Use Coolify’s configuration preview or rendered compose view to catch indentation errors, missing variables, and references to services that are not present.
Set the instance name and environment
The Coolify community example asks for an instance name. In that example, the value names the Convex instance and its PostgreSQL database. Use a short, stable identifier such as convex-prod; changing it later can create a different database or make existing configuration difficult to locate.
Enter secrets through Coolify’s environment-variable interface rather than committing them to a repository. Keep production and staging resources separate, with different instance names, domains, database credentials, volumes, and administrator keys.

Configure the three public endpoints
Convex’s local defaults bind the backend and HTTP actions to localhost addresses. Those defaults are appropriate for a local compose network, not for an application connecting over the internet. In Coolify, attach public HTTPS domains to the relevant services through the proxy.

Enable HTTPS for each domain in Coolify. Wait for DNS propagation and certificate issuance before testing application traffic.
Do not send dashboard traffic to port 3210 or API traffic to port 6791. A successful TLS certificate does not prove that the service behind the domain is the correct one; verify each endpoint independently.
Replace localhost origins with public URLs
The compose defaults assume localhost. Change every public-origin setting to the corresponding HTTPS hostname before deployment. The exact variable names and required values depend on the compose-file version, so inspect the current file rather than copying names from an older tutorial.
Names such as CONVEX_CLOUD_ORIGIN and CONVEX_SITE_ORIGIN appear in third-party examples, but their use is not established as a universal requirement for every current self-hosted compose file. If your selected file defines them, set them to the public origins it documents. If it uses different names, follow those definitions instead of adding undocumented variables.
Check for all of the following before clicking Deploy:

No API, site, dashboard, callback, or action origin still points to
localhost,127.0.0.1, or an internal Docker hostname when that value is meant for browser or external-client access. -
The URL includes the correct
https://scheme and hostname. -
There is no accidental trailing path, port, or whitespace unless the compose documentation explicitly requires it.

Internal service-to-service URLs remain internal when the compose file requires them; do not replace every Docker hostname with a public domain indiscriminately.
Deploy and verify the services

Start the deployment from the Coolify resource page.

Watch the build and startup logs for image-pull failures, invalid environment variables, database connection errors, and port-binding conflicts.

Confirm that the backend, dashboard, database, and optional MinIO service reach their healthy or running state.

Open the three HTTPS domains in separate browser tabs. The dashboard may require an administrator key, while the API and action endpoints may return a plain status response or an application-specific error when opened directly in a browser.

Check Coolify’s proxy logs if a domain returns a gateway error. A gateway error usually means the target service is not listening on the configured port, is unhealthy, or is attached to the wrong network.

A deployment marked running is not enough evidence that Convex is usable. Validate DNS, TLS, each port mapping, persistent volumes, and the public-origin configuration before connecting an application.
Generate the Convex administrator key
The administrator key is generated inside the backend container. It grants full administrative access, so treat it like a root credential and never expose it in browser code, screenshots, logs, or a public repository.

Open the deployed resource’s terminal in Coolify, or connect to the server using the method your deployment policy allows.

Run this command from the directory containing the deployed compose project:
docker compose exec backend ./generate_admin_key.sh -
Copy the generated key once and store it in an approved password manager or secret store.

If the command reports that the service is unavailable, inspect the backend logs and confirm that the service is actually named
backend. Do not regenerate keys casually. Coordinate key rotation with every application and administrative integration that uses the existing key, and remove old values from Coolify variables and secret stores after rotation.
Sign in to the dashboard

Open the dashboard’s HTTPS domain on port 6791 through the hostname you configured.

Enter the administrator key generated from the backend container.
-
Confirm that the dashboard can reach the backend without mixed-content, CORS, or origin errors.

Restrict dashboard access with your organization’s preferred controls, such as an access gateway, firewall rule, VPN, or identity-aware proxy. The dashboard is an administrative surface and should not be left broadly exposed without a security decision.
Connect a Convex application
In the Convex project that should use this server, set the self-hosted URL and administrator key in the local environment file:
CONVEX_SELF_HOSTED_URL=https://api.example.com
CONVEX_SELF_HOSTED_ADMIN_KEY=your-generated-admin-keyReplace the example hostname with your backend API domain. Keep .env.local and equivalent secret files out of source control. The administrator key belongs only in trusted server-side or deployment contexts; do not bundle it into a public frontend.
Restart the development server or redeploy the application after changing environment variables. If the application still contacts the hosted Convex service, inspect its build-time variables and deployment configuration for an old URL or an environment variable that overrides the self-hosted setting.
Choose SQLite or PostgreSQL
SQLite
SQLite is the default storage option in the self-hosted setup and is the simplest way to get a test or small installation running. It reduces the number of services and credentials you must manage. Its data still requires a persistent volume and a tested backup procedure.
PostgreSQL
The official Convex README recommends a separate SQL database for production. PostgreSQL adds operational work—credentials, upgrades, backups, monitoring, and network access—but gives you a more conventional production database boundary. You can run PostgreSQL on the same server, although the resulting memory requirement is higher; a third-party sizing recommendation prefers 4 GB of RAM when PostgreSQL shares the host.

Do not switch databases by merely changing a single variable without reading the compose file’s migration and initialization behavior. Treat a database change as an infrastructure migration, with a backup and rollback plan.
Optional MinIO object storage
The community Coolify compose example includes MinIO for file storage. If you use that configuration, persist the MinIO data directory, protect its credentials, and decide whether the MinIO console should be private. Exposing an object-storage administration interface on the public internet is a separate security decision from exposing Convex’s API.

If your workload does not use file storage and the official compose file does not require MinIO, do not add it solely because a community example contains it. Every extra service increases patching, backup, monitoring, and credential-management work.

Coolify has no Convex template
This is expected. Create a Docker Compose resource and supply a reviewed Convex compose file. A missing template is not evidence that Convex cannot run on Coolify.
API domain returns a gateway error

Confirm the domain targets port 3210, not 3211 or 6791.

Check that the backend container is running and listening on the expected interface.

Review Coolify proxy logs for a wrong service name or network attachment.

Verify DNS resolves to the Coolify server and that the certificate covers the hostname.
HTTP actions fail while the API works
Check the separate 3211 domain and the public-origin settings used for HTTP actions. A working API hostname does not automatically route action requests.
Dashboard loads but cannot authenticate

Generate the key from the running backend container, not from a different staging or local installation.

Make sure no spaces or line breaks were added when copying the key.

Confirm the dashboard and backend belong to the same compose deployment and instance name.
Application still uses localhost
Inspect both the compose environment and the application’s .env.local or deployment variables. Replace localhost values used for public access, then restart or redeploy so the new values are loaded. Browser developer tools can reveal the hostname the client is actually calling.
Data disappears after a redeploy
Inspect the volume declarations and the host path or Docker volume attached to the database service. A recreated container without a persistent volume starts with a new data directory. Stop further destructive deployments, identify the previous volume, and restore from the most recent verified backup.

Resource limits are reached
Monitor RAM, CPU, disk space, database growth, and object-storage usage. Move PostgreSQL or MinIO to dedicated infrastructure when colocating them with Convex causes contention. Raising limits without identifying the bottleneck can postpone rather than solve the problem.

Use persistent volumes and verify that backups can be restored.

Prefer PostgreSQL for a production deployment, following the current Convex compose documentation.

Pin and periodically update container images instead of relying on unreviewed floating tags.

Monitor disk, memory, CPU, database health, and certificate renewal.

Separate staging and production instance names, domains, credentials, and volumes.

Review every environment variable after upgrading the compose file, because names and defaults can change between releases.
Official compose versus community Coolify compose

For either option, the current compose file is the authority for service names, variables, health checks, and volumes. The Coolify dashboard is the authority for the labels and paths shown in your installed Coolify version.
What to verify before calling the deployment complete

The HTTP-action hostname reaches port 3211 over HTTPS.
