Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
Yes—you can self-host BigBlueButton 4.0 on a VPS, but only when the VPS behaves like a dedicated, high-performance server. Use a clean Ubuntu 24.04 64-bit installation with at least 8 fast CPU cores, 16 GB of memory plus swap, sufficient recording storage, unrestricted WebRTC ports, a real hostname with HTTPS, and both IPv4 and IPv6. A low-cost shared VPS, a server with an existing control panel, or a machine that exposes only FTP and cPanel/Plesk access is not suitable.
This guide covers capacity planning, DNS and TLS, the installation workflow, firewall rules, validation, hardening, upgrades, and the point at which one VPS is no longer enough.

What BigBlueButton 4.0 needs from a VPS
BigBlueButton is a real-time WebRTC conferencing system, not a small PHP application. The server mixes audio and video streams, handles signaling, records sessions, serves presentation assets, and encrypts browser connections. CPU scheduling, UDP networking, disk throughput, and latency therefore matter as much as the advertised VPS memory.
The BigBlueButton installation documentation recommends a “clean” and dedicated Ubuntu 24.04 64-bit server with no prior software installed. Treat the following as the production baseline for one server:
#1 Best Overall
- 360° video conferencing camera with built in ominidirectional microphone
- Six display modes deliver exceptional viewing angles with flexibility and versatility
- Full HD 1080p video playback @ 30 Hz
- USB UVC/UAC plug-and-play with touch bar to specify participants’ location. *Note: App permissions may need to be authorized in order to use the camera. An upgrade of the firmware to the latest version may be required in order to optimize the webcam's functionality and resolution.
- Supports your favorite video conferencing apps: Compatible with Skype, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Cisco, Zoom, BlueJeans, Amazon Chime, GoToMeeting, Slack
| Resource or requirement | Baseline for BigBlueButton 4.0 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Ubuntu 24.04, 64-bit | The 4.0 release is documented for this release; older Ubuntu versions belong to older BigBlueButton releases. |
| Kernel | Linux kernel 6.x | Required by the documented 4.0 platform combination. |
| CPU | 8 CPU cores with high single-thread performance | Media processing is sensitive to per-core speed and consistent scheduling, not just the number of virtual CPUs. |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM with swap | Conference services and recording components need headroom; swap is part of the documented baseline. |
| Disk | 500 GB free space when recording; 50 GB when recording is disabled | Recordings accumulate over time. The 50 GB figure applies only when recording is disabled. |
| Public networking | At least 250 Mbit/s symmetric bandwidth in the installation documentation | Upload capacity is essential because the server sends media to participants. |
| Conservative bandwidth guidance | 1 Gbit/s in both directions in the project FAQ | This higher recommendation is useful when many participants use audio and video concurrently; verify the provider’s sustained, not burst, allowance. |
| IP connectivity | Public IPv4 and IPv6 | Clients may reach the service over either protocol. |
| Required ports | TCP 80 and 443; UDP 16384–32768 | TCP is used for web and TLS traffic; the UDP range carries WebRTC media. |
| Identity | A DNS hostname and a valid HTTPS certificate | Browsers can refuse camera and microphone access when WebRTC is opened by an IP address alone. |
The figures are requirements and recommendations from BigBlueButton’s current installation documentation and FAQ, accessed in 2026. They are not a promise that every provider’s smallest instance will deliver the same experience. Check CPU entitlement, sustained bandwidth, packet loss, storage I/O, and virtualization limits before ordering.
Choose the right kind of server
Dedicated-CPU VPS
A dedicated-CPU or compute-intensive cloud instance is the normal starting point. BigBlueButton’s own examples include DigitalOcean c-8, AWS c5a.2xlarge or larger, and Hetzner AX52 or CCX33. These names are sizing anchors rather than a requirement to use a particular provider. Select an equivalent plan with eight genuinely available cores, 16 GB or more RAM, fast local or network storage, IPv4 and IPv6, and control over the UDP range.
Dedicated physical server
A physical server is preferable when you need predictable CPU performance, many simultaneous cameras, long recording retention, or strict control over network and storage I/O. It costs more and may take longer to provision, but it removes the “noisy neighbor” behavior possible on oversubscribed VPS hosts.
Shared hosting is not an alternative
Shared hosting that provides only FTP, a web panel, or cPanel/Plesk access cannot install BigBlueButton. The installer needs root privileges, system services, Docker, kernel and firewall access, and exclusive control of ports 80 and 443. A managed web-hosting account is therefore a different product, even if it advertises unlimited storage or bandwidth.
Plan capacity before you order
Interpret the two bandwidth recommendations
The installation page specifies at least 250 Mbit/s symmetric bandwidth, while the project FAQ recommends 1 Gbit/s in both directions. Use 250 Mbit/s as the documented floor for a properly sized deployment and the 1 Gbit/s figure as the safer target for a busy public service. Your actual requirement depends on how many people publish cameras, whether screensharing is active, and whether recordings are being written and downloaded at the same time. Ask the provider whether the port speed is dedicated, whether traffic is metered, and whether sustained UDP traffic is filtered or rate-limited.

Plan recording storage
Choose a 500 GB free-disk baseline when recordings are enabled. Reserve additional capacity for operating-system updates, logs, temporary processing files, backups, and future growth; do not allocate the entire disk to the recording directory. If recording is disabled, the documented baseline is 50 GB, but that does not turn a small disk into a generally suitable conference server.

- Confirm that the plan supplies eight cores at the stated performance continuously, rather than presenting short-lived burst credits.
- Verify that swap can be created and that the provider does not disable it at the hypervisor layer.
- Check storage IOPS and latency, not only capacity, because recording and media services perform frequent reads and writes.
- Confirm that IPv6 is routed to the instance and that you can create firewall rules for the complete UDP range.
- Choose a region close to most participants; geographic distance increases media latency even when CPU and bandwidth are adequate.
Prepare DNS, TLS, and a clean operating system
Create the hostname first
Choose a stable name such as bbb.example.com and create an A record for the server’s public IPv4 address and an AAAA record for its public IPv6 address. Allow DNS changes to propagate before installation. The hostname entered during setup must resolve consistently from the public internet; an internal-only name or an address that changes after a reboot will cause certificate and client-connection problems.
Reserve ports 80 and 443
Install BigBlueButton on a newly provisioned host. Nothing else should already bind TCP 80 or 443: no Apache or Nginx site, reverse proxy, Plesk service, monitoring dashboard, or temporary test application. The project explicitly calls for a clean host. If another service occupies those ports, remove it or choose another server before running the installer; trying to work around the conflict makes certificate issuance and later upgrades unreliable.
Use HTTPS, not an IP address
Browsers protect camera and microphone access behind a secure origin. A valid certificate for the DNS name is therefore an operational requirement. The installation process can configure TLS when the hostname resolves correctly and port 80 is reachable for certificate validation. Do not plan to hand users an HTTP URL or an IP address and expect WebRTC permissions to work consistently.
Install BigBlueButton 4.0
The project distributes a version-specific bbb-install.sh installer. Use the branch and arguments documented for the exact BigBlueButton release you are deploying; do not reuse a script intended for an older Ubuntu or BigBlueButton version.

- 【Presenter Tracking for Business Presentations】Smart AI tracking follows the active speaker, perfect for training sessions, client presentations, and interactive meetings.
- 【120° Wide Angle Covers the Entire Room】Capture the full meeting space without repositioning the camera—no more squeezing into the frame.
- 【Clear Audio Across the Table (Up to 5m)】Dual AI noise-canceling microphones reduce background noise and capture voices clearly across the room.
- Provision the server. Select Ubuntu 24.04 64-bit, the required dedicated-CPU size, public IPv4 and IPv6, and enough free disk for your recording policy. Start with a new machine rather than an existing application server.
- Set the hostname. Point the chosen DNS name to the server and confirm it resolves from an external network. Make sure TCP 80 and 443 are reachable before installation.
- Log in with administrative access. You need root access or a user able to run privileged commands. FTP-only or control-panel-only access cannot complete this installation.
- Verify the host is clean. Stop or remove services that listen on 80 or 443, and remove unrelated reverse proxies and control panels. A clean host also makes later troubleshooting much easier.
- Download the release-appropriate installer. Follow BigBlueButton’s current installation documentation for the official script location, release branch, hostname, and any options. The script can optionally install Greenlight or configure an LTI integration; include those options only when you have chosen the corresponding front end.
- Run the installer and monitor its output. Keep the session attached or use a reliable terminal session so you can see package, Docker, certificate, and service errors. Do not interrupt it during component configuration.
- Open the media and web ports. Permit TCP 80 and 443 plus UDP 16384 through 32768 in both the provider firewall and the host firewall. A rule in only one place is insufficient.
- Restart and check services. After installation completes, run
sudo bbb-conf --restart, thensudo bbb-conf --check. Read every item under “Potential problems”; do not treat a page loading in a browser as proof that media, recording, and background services are healthy. - Create a test room. Use Greenlight or another configured front end, join from a second device or network, grant camera and microphone permissions, test screen sharing, and make a short recording if recording is enabled.
Configure firewalls and difficult client networks
Provider and host firewalls must agree
Allow inbound TCP 80 and 443 and UDP 16384–32768 at the cloud provider’s security-group or network-firewall layer. Apply the same policy to the operating system firewall. Keep administrative access restricted to your management addresses where possible, but do not narrow the WebRTC UDP range to a single port unless the documentation for your deployment explicitly supports that configuration.
When to deploy TURN
Some participants sit behind enterprise firewalls, carrier-grade NAT, or networks that block direct UDP media. Plan a TURN server for those users. TURN relays media when a direct path cannot be established, increasing bandwidth consumption and adding another service to monitor. Test from a restrictive external network rather than assuming that a successful test on your office LAN proves universal connectivity.
Validate the installation systematically
Use a repeatable acceptance test after every installation or major change:
- Open the fully qualified HTTPS hostname in a current desktop browser and confirm the certificate name matches.
- Join a room from two independent networks, such as a wired connection and a mobile hotspot.
- Grant microphone and camera permissions, publish and unpublish video, and verify that audio remains synchronized.
- Start screen sharing and check that viewers see the expected resolution without persistent packet-loss warnings.
- Record a short session, stop it, and verify that the recording is processed and playable through the selected front end.
- Run
sudo bbb-conf --checkagain and investigate every reported potential problem. - Review firewall logs and provider traffic graphs for blocked UDP packets, unexpected rate limits, or a saturated interface.
Greenlight, LTI, and the conferencing server
BigBlueButton provides the conferencing engine and APIs; users still need a way to create rooms and authenticate. The installer supports optional Greenlight or LTI installation, but these choices add their own configuration and data-management responsibilities. Decide whether you want a standalone Greenlight portal, an existing learning-management system through LTI, or another application before running the installer. Keep the front end and its database on the same host only for a modest deployment; larger installations commonly separate them.
Secure and maintain the VPS after installation
Reduce the exposed surface
- Keep only the required public services reachable: HTTPS, HTTP for certificate workflows where needed, and the documented UDP media range.
- Restrict SSH or other administration ports to trusted source addresses and use key-based authentication.
- Apply Ubuntu security updates during a maintenance window and monitor whether a kernel or Docker update requires a reboot.
- Keep the BigBlueButton host dedicated; adding unrelated websites, databases, or monitoring agents can consume the CPU, memory, and ports that media services need.
- Use provider snapshots or backups, but also test restoring configuration and recordings. A snapshot that has never been restored is not a recovery plan.
Monitor the signals that predict failure
Watch sustained CPU utilization and per-core saturation, memory pressure and swap activity, free disk space, disk latency, network throughput, packet loss, and the number of active conferences. Alert before the recording volume fills the disk. Keep copies of the hostname, certificate, firewall policy, installer options, Greenlight or LTI configuration, and backup credentials in a protected administrative location.

Upgrades and migration boundaries
BigBlueButton 4.0 requires Ubuntu 24.04 64-bit. Older releases used older Ubuntu versions, and a direct in-place upgrade from BigBlueButton 3.0 on Ubuntu 22.04 to 4.0 on Ubuntu 24.04 is unsupported. The safe migration pattern is to provision a clean 4.0 server, install the current release there, test it, and migrate recordings and front-end data using the procedures documented for your deployment.
Do not “upgrade” by changing the operating-system release underneath a production 3.0 installation and hoping the services recover. Preserve the old server until the new hostname, TLS certificate, rooms, authentication, recordings, and client tests all pass. Schedule a cutover and retain a rollback path based on backups rather than an untested package downgrade.

When one VPS is no longer enough
A single server is convenient for a small or moderate service, but growth adds more than CPU demand. Larger deployments may need Greenlight, a separate database, centralized backups, Scalelite for distributing conferences across multiple BigBlueButton servers, and load-balancing architecture. Separate recording storage can prevent a full disk from taking down the conferencing engine. TURN capacity may also need to scale independently when many users arrive from restrictive networks.
Scale based on measurements: concurrent rooms, active publishers, CPU saturation, packet loss, recording volume, and the percentage of sessions requiring relay. Add capacity before users experience dropped audio or failed joins. A second identical server with tested routing is usually more useful than adding unrelated services to an already busy node.
Troubleshooting checklist
| Symptom | Likely cause | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Camera or microphone permission is denied | The site is opened by IP address or without valid HTTPS. | Use the DNS hostname with a valid certificate and retest in a fresh browser session. |
| The installer fails while configuring the web service | Another application already occupies TCP 80 or 443. | Identify and remove the conflicting service, then reinstall on a clean host. |
| Users join but audio or video never connects | UDP 16384–32768 is blocked by the provider firewall, host firewall, or client network. | Open the full documented range at both firewall layers; test from another network and deploy TURN when direct UDP is impossible. |
| Meetings become unstable as attendance grows | CPU, bandwidth, packet loss, or provider throttling is limiting the instance. | Check per-core CPU, sustained interface usage, packet loss, and provider limits; move to a stronger dedicated-CPU plan or split conferences across servers. |
| Recordings stop processing | Insufficient free disk, memory pressure, or a failed recording service. | Check free space and swap activity, run sudo bbb-conf --check, review service logs, and restore capacity before retrying. |
| The old server cannot be upgraded directly to 4.0 | BigBlueButton 3.0 on Ubuntu 22.04 to 4.0 on Ubuntu 24.04 is an unsupported in-place path. | Provision a new 4.0 host and migrate recordings and application data using the documented migration procedure. |
Practical decision checklist
Proceed with a VPS deployment when you can answer “yes” to all of these questions:
- Does the plan provide eight fast, consistently available CPU cores and at least 16 GB RAM with swap?
- Is Ubuntu 24.04 64-bit installed on a new, dedicated host?
- Can you reserve 500 GB of free disk for recordings, or 50 GB when recording is explicitly disabled?
- Does the provider deliver public IPv4 and IPv6, sustained symmetric bandwidth, and unrestricted control of the required UDP range?
- Can you point a hostname to the server and obtain a valid HTTPS certificate?
- Do you have root access and control over both provider and operating-system firewalls?
- Have you planned backups, recording retention, monitoring, and TURN for restrictive client networks?
If any answer is “no,” fix that prerequisite before installing. BigBlueButton’s installer can automate component setup, but it cannot compensate for an undersized CPU, blocked media ports, an occupied web port, an invalid certificate, or a host that lacks administrative control.
