Self-hosting Jellyfin on a VPS is practical when the server has persistent storage, enough upload capacity, and hardware suited to the streams your clients cannot direct-play. Use a supported Linux image or Jellyfin’s official container, keep configuration and cache on persistent volumes, allow only necessary firewall traffic, and terminate public HTTPS at a reverse proxy.

The reliable deployment sequence is: plan storage and bandwidth, choose native packages or Docker, install Jellyfin, mount the media library, secure the network edge, configure trusted proxies, then test direct play and transcoding with the clients you actually use.

What a VPS-based Jellyfin server looks like

Jellyfin is the application that indexes your media, authenticates users, and serves playback sessions. A VPS supplies the Linux operating system, CPU, memory, storage, network connection, and—on some plans—an exposed GPU. Your clients may be televisions, phones, browsers, streaming boxes, or desktop applications on local or remote networks.

A typical public deployment has four layers:

  • Media storage: local SSD or block storage attached to the VPS, a mounted network share, or a cloud-storage service.
  • Jellyfin: installed as a native service or in the official jellyfin/jellyfin container.
  • Reverse proxy: the Internet-facing entry point that obtains and renews certificates, forwards requests, and can apply rate limits.
  • Firewall and DNS: DNS points a hostname to the VPS; the firewall exposes only the proxy and any deliberately enabled LAN features.

When a client supports the file’s container, video codec, audio codec, bitrate, and subtitle format, Jellyfin can use direct play. The server then reads the file and sends it with little CPU overhead. If one of those properties is incompatible, Jellyfin may remux the file, transcode audio, burn in subtitles, or transcode the video. The last case determines whether ordinary VPS CPU capacity is sufficient or whether a supported GPU is justified.

Plan the VPS before installing anything

Choose a supported operating system

Jellyfin documents installation paths for Debian, Ubuntu, other Linux distributions, Docker, Podman, and additional platforms. For a VPS, a current, minimal Debian- or Ubuntu-based image is usually the least complicated starting point because package, firewall, and service-management tools are widely available. FreeBSD and its derivatives are not officially supported because of .NET compatibility limitations, so do not select them for a deployment that depends on upstream support.

Use a VPS region close to most viewers. Distance affects latency and the path between the server and your users, while the provider’s egress policy determines whether sustained streaming becomes expensive. Confirm that the plan supplies a public IPv4 address, IPv6 if you need it, inbound firewall controls, snapshots or backups, and storage with enough I/O for several simultaneous reads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match resources to the workload

Jellyfin’s hardware guidance is a starting point rather than a guaranteed stream count. Capacity changes with resolution, codec, subtitles, client support, concurrent users, and the amount of video that must be converted.

Resource Documented starting point How to size it
System and application storage 100 GB SSD for the operating system, Jellyfin files, and transcoding cache Add library storage separately. Leave free space for updates, logs, metadata, and temporary conversion files.
Memory About 8 GB for an average deployment; a headless Linux server may work with 4 GB Increase it for larger libraries, several users, database activity, monitoring agents, or other services on the VPS.
Upload bandwidth At least 20 Mbps for remote access Estimate the combined peak bitrate of remote sessions and leave headroom for protocol overhead and other traffic.
Network interface Gigabit Ethernet or faster is recommended Check the provider’s sustained throughput, not only a burst speed shown in marketing material.
Transcoding area Use a dedicated, fast cache location Estimate the largest media file multiplied by the maximum number of concurrent streams that users will consume, then provide at least that much working space.
CPU No universal Jellyfin stream number is published Favor sustained performance when most clients need software transcoding; test your own codecs and subtitle cases.

The 100 GB figure covers the operating system, Jellyfin’s files, and its working cache; it is not a recommendation to store a large movie collection on the boot disk. Keep the library on additional block storage, a mounted share, or another storage service whose performance and egress terms you understand.

Count direct-play and conversion sessions separately

Make a list of the clients and media combinations you intend to support. A modern television may direct-play an H.264 file with AAC audio, while an older browser, a mobile connection, or a subtitle that must be burned into the picture may force conversion. Count the worst realistic number of simultaneous conversion sessions, not the number of user accounts. A server that handles ten direct-play sessions can still struggle with one high-resolution software transcode.

Do not select a GPU solely because a plan advertises one. Jellyfin needs a supported acceleration API, a compatible host driver, permission to access the device, and correct container mappings. Validate the complete path with a real playback session.

Choose Docker or a native installation

Both approaches are supported. The right choice depends on how you operate the VPS rather than on a universal performance difference.

Consideration Official container with Docker or Compose Native Linux package
Repeatability Image, mounts, environment, and restart policy can be captured in one Compose file. Configuration is integrated with the host package manager and service manager.
Upgrades and rollback Pull a known image tag, recreate the container, and retain the previous image for rollback. Use distribution and Jellyfin package procedures; rollback depends on available package versions and snapshots.
Backups Back up bind-mounted configuration and cache paths plus the Compose file. Back up the service configuration, Jellyfin data directories, and package repository details.
Device access GPU render devices and drivers must be passed through explicitly. Device access is usually more direct, but host driver configuration still matters.
Host integration Isolation reduces dependency conflicts and makes migration easier. Logs, service units, permissions, and updates behave like other host services.
Troubleshooting Check both container state and host state, including mounts and device mappings. There is no container layer, which can simplify diagnosis of permissions and networking.

Choose Docker when you value a reproducible deployment or expect to move the service between hosts. Choose a native package when the VPS is dedicated to Jellyfin and you want the fewest layers between the service and Linux. Do not mix installation methods on the same host unless you have a specific migration plan; two services competing for the same ports and data paths create avoidable failures.

Deploy Jellyfin with Docker Compose

1. Prepare the Linux host

  1. Provision a supported Debian- or Ubuntu-based VPS with a non-root administrative account, automatic security updates where appropriate, and a hostname.
  2. Install Docker Engine and the Compose plugin using the installation method documented for your distribution. Verify that docker version and docker compose version return successfully.
  3. Create dedicated directories on persistent storage. For example, use /srv/jellyfin/config, /srv/jellyfin/cache, and /srv/media. The first two must survive container replacement; the media directory can be a mounted data volume.
  4. Set ownership and permissions so the UID and GID used by the container can read the media and write configuration, metadata, and cache files. Avoid making the entire filesystem world-writable.

2. Create a Compose definition

The following is a minimal bridge-network deployment. It keeps configuration and cache outside the container and mounts the media library read-only, which reduces the damage an application-level mistake could cause to the source files.

services:
  jellyfin:
    image: jellyfin/jellyfin
    container_name: jellyfin
    user: '1000:1000'
    ports:
      - '8096:8096'
      - '8920:8920'
    volumes:
      - /srv/jellyfin/config:/config
      - /srv/jellyfin/cache:/cache
      - /srv/media:/media:ro
    restart: unless-stopped

Save the file as compose.yml. Replace the example UID, GID, and paths with values that match your host. The image name is official; for production, record the image tag or digest you deploy so an update is deliberate rather than an unexpected change caused by a moving tag.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The HTTP port is normally used for the internal connection from the reverse proxy. The HTTPS port is available if you configure Jellyfin’s own TLS, but terminating TLS at the proxy keeps certificates and public policy in one place. Do not publish both ports to the Internet unless you have a reason and have secured each path.

3. Start and verify the container

  1. From the directory containing compose.yml, run docker compose up -d.
  2. Check docker compose ps for a running state and inspect docker compose logs --tail=100 jellyfin for startup errors.
  3. From a trusted network, open the VPS address and Jellyfin’s internal HTTP port in a browser. Complete the setup wizard, create the administrator account, select the language, and add libraries using the container paths such as /media/Movies, not the host paths.
  4. Play a known-compatible file and inspect the session details in Jellyfin’s dashboard. Confirm that it is direct playing before testing a file that requires conversion.

4. Update without losing the server

Back up the configuration before changing the image. Then pull the selected image, recreate the service, and verify libraries, users, playback, and logs. A typical sequence is docker compose pull, docker compose up -d, and docker image prune only after you are satisfied with the new version. Keep the previous image available until the new deployment has passed your checks. Never delete the persistent configuration directory as part of an update.

5. Enable DLNA only when you need it

Jellyfin’s container documentation identifies host networking as optional for ordinary streaming and specifically required when DLNA is needed. Host networking changes the container’s exposure model: the service uses the host network directly instead of mapped bridge ports. Enable it only after reviewing the firewall and deciding that DLNA discovery on the intended network is required. It is generally unsuitable as a reason to expose every host interface to the public Internet.

Install Jellyfin natively on Linux

A native installation follows the distribution-specific Jellyfin package instructions rather than a universal command sequence. Install the repository or package for your Linux release, enable the Jellyfin service, and verify that it starts after reboot. Put the media library on a stable mount that is available before the service starts; otherwise Jellyfin may index an empty directory or report missing files.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Native installs still need the same operational controls as containers: persistent configuration and cache, least-privilege file permissions, firewall rules, reverse-proxy protection, backups, and a documented upgrade path. The absence of a container does not remove the need to test package upgrades or GPU drivers.

Secure public access with DNS, a firewall, and HTTPS

Use a reverse proxy as the public entry point

Point a dedicated hostname, such as media.example.net, to the VPS address. The reverse proxy listens on the standard web ports, obtains and renews the certificate, and forwards requests to Jellyfin on the loopback address or an internal container network. This arrangement keeps Jellyfin’s application port off the public interface and centralizes certificate, access-log, and rate-limit policy.

Configure the proxy for long-lived streaming connections and WebSocket upgrades. Forward the original host, protocol, and client address headers. A generic proxy route has the following shape:

client request over HTTPS
        |
        v
reverse proxy: certificate, limits, access log
        |
        v
Jellyfin at http://127.0.0.1:8096

The proxy does not replace Jellyfin authentication. Keep Jellyfin user accounts and strong passwords enabled, and add an additional identity layer only if you understand how it handles streaming sessions and headers.

Tell Jellyfin which proxy is trusted

When the proxy forwards a request, Jellyfin sees the proxy’s address unless it is configured to trust that intermediary. Add the proxy’s IP address or addresses to Jellyfin’s Known Proxies setting. This allows Jellyfin to interpret X-Forwarded-For, X-Forwarded-Proto, and X-Forwarded-Host correctly. An incorrect list can make local users appear remote, break remote-access decisions, or allow untrusted clients to spoof forwarding headers.

If the proxy and Jellyfin run in containers, use the stable proxy network address or subnet that your deployment actually uses. Recheck the setting after recreating containers or changing networks.

Open only the required firewall traffic

Traffic Typical treatment Reason
SSH administration Allow only from your management addresses or VPN, preferably with keys and a non-default policy. Reduces exposure of the host administration service.
HTTP and HTTPS to the reverse proxy Allow public TCP traffic to the proxy; use HTTP only for certificate issuance or redirect it to HTTPS. Provides the public web entry point.
Jellyfin application port Allow only from the reverse proxy, private network, or administrator addresses. Prevents bypassing proxy controls and certificate policy.
DLNA discovery Allow only on the LAN or private network if DLNA is enabled. Discovery protocols are not intended as a public Internet interface.

Apply rules at both the VPS provider’s network firewall and the operating-system firewall when both are available. Test from an external network that only the intended hostname and proxy ports are reachable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect proxy logs

Jellyfin warns that authentication information can appear in URLs, including api_key parameters. Restrict access to proxy and application logs, avoid retaining full request URLs when they are not needed, and redact sensitive query strings before shipping logs to another system. Treat exported logs as credentials until you have confirmed that secrets are absent.

Configure hardware acceleration and transcoding

Know when transcoding is actually needed

Direct play is the lowest-resource path because the client receives a compatible file without video conversion. Remuxing changes the container without decoding and re-encoding the video; audio conversion and subtitle burn-in consume more resources. Full video transcoding is the expensive case and may require a GPU when several sessions occur at once or when HDR tone-mapping is required.

After deployment, test each important client and record whether a session is direct playing, remuxing, or transcoding. Test subtitles separately: a subtitle format that the client cannot render may trigger a video conversion even when the underlying video codec is supported.

Supported acceleration families

Hardware path Documented Jellyfin method VPS considerations
Intel integrated graphics Quick Sync Video; Linux VA-API Requires a host driver and access to the render device, commonly passed into a container.
NVIDIA GPU NVDEC and NVENC Requires the NVIDIA driver and NVIDIA Container Toolkit, plus correct device access.
AMD graphics AMF; Linux VA-API Verify that the provider exposes the required device and driver stack.
Apple hardware VideoToolbox Not generally relevant to a conventional Linux VPS; use only where the hosting platform supports the required environment.
Rockchip hardware RKMPP Usually relevant to specialized hardware rather than standard x86 VPS plans.

If no usable hardware decoder is available, Jellyfin falls back to software decoding. A nominal GPU listing does not prove that encoding, decoding, tone-mapping, and container access are all available. Confirm the driver version, device permissions, supported codecs, and Jellyfin’s playback-session diagnostics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pass a GPU into a container

Install and validate the driver on the host first. For Intel or AMD on Linux, the container commonly needs the host render device passed through; for NVIDIA, install the NVIDIA driver and NVIDIA Container Toolkit before adding the appropriate runtime and device settings to Compose. Keep the mapping as narrow as possible, restart the container, then enable the matching hardware-acceleration method in Jellyfin’s dashboard.

Run a controlled test with a file that forces conversion and watch CPU, memory, GPU utilization, and the playback-session label. If the session remains software transcoding, inspect driver visibility and permissions before buying a larger plan. GPU acceleration reduces CPU pressure but does not increase network bandwidth, storage throughput, or a client’s ability to play an unsupported format.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Finish the first-run Jellyfin configuration

  1. Set the administrator account: use a unique password and avoid sharing the administrator login for ordinary viewing.
  2. Add libraries: select Movies, Shows, Music, or other types and point each library to the container’s mounted path. Keep media in separate, predictable directories so permissions and backups are easy to audit.
  3. Create users: give each person an individual account, restrict libraries where necessary, and disable administrative privileges for viewers.
  4. Set playback policy: choose remote bitrate limits that fit the VPS upload capacity and the users’ connections. A limit protects the server from one client consuming the entire uplink.
  5. Configure networking: set the public hostname and HTTPS arrangement, then add the reverse proxy addresses to Known Proxies. Verify that Jellyfin reports local and remote connections correctly.
  6. Test clients: play representative files on every important device, including a direct-play file, a file needing audio conversion, a subtitle-heavy file, and a high-bitrate stream.

Storage, backups, and routine operations

Keep state outside replaceable components

Jellyfin’s configuration, user database, library metadata, plugins, and cache must live on persistent VPS storage or Docker volumes. A container replacement that lacks those mounts is a new, empty server. Treat the media library as separate data: it may be on attached block storage, a mounted network share, or cloud storage, but the mount must be reliable and fast enough for concurrent reads.

Use stable mount points and verify them after reboot. If a network share is unavailable, do not let the service silently index an empty local directory at the same path. A mount check in the service startup process or an explicit operational runbook prevents accidental metadata churn.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Back up configuration and metadata separately

  • Back up the Jellyfin configuration and metadata directory on a schedule, with at least one copy off the VPS.
  • Record the container image tag or digest, Compose file, environment values, mount paths, firewall rules, proxy configuration, and GPU device mappings.
  • Use provider snapshots for rapid host recovery, but do not treat a snapshot as the only backup of an active database.
  • Test restoring the configuration to a temporary host. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
  • Back up irreplaceable media according to its value; application metadata cannot replace the original files.

Monitor the limits that cause failures

Track disk free space, storage latency, memory pressure, CPU saturation, upload throughput, and the number and type of active sessions. Alerts should fire before the transcoding cache fills the disk or the provider throttles the network. Review Jellyfin and proxy logs after upgrades, and remove stale temporary files only through documented maintenance procedures.

Troubleshoot common VPS deployments

Symptom Likely cause Checks and corrective action
The setup page does not load Container stopped, port blocked, or proxy points to the wrong address. Check container status and logs, confirm the local listener, then test the proxy-to-Jellyfin connection from the host.
Media libraries are empty Wrong path inside the container, missing mount, or insufficient read permission. Inspect mounts from inside the container, verify the host path is mounted after reboot, and confirm UID/GID access.
HTTPS works but remote detection is wrong Proxy headers or Known Proxies are incorrect. Forward host, protocol, and client-address headers; list only the real proxy addresses in Jellyfin.
Playback buffers Upload limit, storage I/O, CPU saturation, or an unexpected transcode. Inspect the session type, measure sustained uplink and disk activity, then reduce bitrate or add capacity based on the measured bottleneck.
GPU acceleration is unavailable Missing host driver, absent container device mapping, unsupported codec, or permissions. Validate the device on the host, confirm container visibility, review the selected acceleration method, and test with a supported file.
DLNA devices cannot discover the server Bridge networking or blocked private-network discovery traffic. Use host networking when DLNA is required, permit discovery only on the LAN, and keep public proxy exposure separate.
An update resets Jellyfin Configuration was stored only in the disposable container layer. Recreate persistent config and cache mounts, restore the backup, and document them in the Compose file.
Proxy logs contain secrets Full request URLs are being retained. Restrict log access, redact query strings, and avoid logging complete URLs where they are unnecessary.

Decide whether a GPU VPS is worth it

Start without a GPU when nearly all clients direct-play and your test sessions show low CPU use. Consider a GPU-enabled plan when remote clients regularly need video conversion, when HDR tone-mapping is part of the requirement, or when software transcoding would consume too many CPU cores. Compare the provider’s sustained CPU performance, exposed GPU model and drivers, device passthrough policy, upload bandwidth, storage I/O, and egress pricing together.

A GPU does not remove the need for adequate RAM, cache space, storage throughput, or network capacity. Nor does it guarantee a fixed number of simultaneous streams: codec, resolution, preset, tone-mapping, subtitles, driver versions, and concurrent sessions all change the result. Base the final plan on measured playback sessions from your actual clients.

Security checklist before sharing the URL

  • Use a supported Linux release and apply security updates.
  • Run Jellyfin with a dedicated, least-privilege user or container identity.
  • Keep configuration and cache on persistent storage with tested backups.
  • Expose the reverse proxy publicly; restrict the Jellyfin application port to trusted internal sources.
  • Serve public sessions over HTTPS and redirect or disable unnecessary plaintext access.
  • Use strong, unique user passwords and separate administrator and viewer accounts.
  • Configure Known Proxies accurately and review forwarded headers after network changes.
  • Restrict SSH and DLNA traffic to the networks that need them.
  • Protect logs because request URLs can contain authentication data.
  • Test direct play, remuxing, subtitles, transcoding, backup restoration, and reboot recovery before inviting additional users.

Final deployment sequence

Provision a supported Linux VPS, allocate the documented baseline storage, memory, and upload capacity, and place media on storage sized for your library. Choose Docker for a reproducible container deployment or a native package for tighter host integration. Persist configuration and cache, verify mounts, and test playback locally. Then put a reverse proxy in front, issue a certificate, restrict firewall rules, configure Known Proxies, and validate remote access from an outside network. Add GPU acceleration only after a real transcoding test shows that software conversion is the limiting resource. This sequence produces a server that can be recreated, upgraded, and recovered instead of a one-off installation that depends on an undocumented host state.
