Run NVIDIA DCGM Exporter on the GPU host or node, then allow only your Prometheus scraper to reach its metrics endpoint and configure TLS or authentication with Prometheus exporter-toolkit. The documented default listener is :9400, and the web-protection configuration is not enabled by default. Treat the endpoint as a restricted monitoring service—not a public web service.
Understand which NVIDIA component serves the metrics
DCGM provides the host engine, tools, libraries, diagnostics, field definitions, and interfaces. DCGM Exporter uses selected DCGM telemetry to expose Prometheus-formatted metrics at /metrics. It uses an embedded host engine by default, or it can connect to a separately managed host engine. These roles and options are documented in NVIDIA’s DCGM Exporter documentation.
A remote scraper needs network reachability to the exporter. NVIDIA’s installation guide identifies access from Prometheus to the exporter HTTP endpoint as a requirement when Prometheus runs on another host or cluster. That does not require broad access: identify the scraper and its network location, then permit only that monitoring path.
Secure the endpoint before making it reachable
Configure TLS or authentication
Use the exporter’s --web-config-file option to load a Prometheus exporter-toolkit configuration for TLS or authentication. NVIDIA documents that the web configuration applies to the root, health, metrics, and enabled pprof endpoints. The option is unset by default, so do not assume those endpoints are protected unless you configure it. See NVIDIA’s DCGM Exporter command and installation documentation for the option and its scope.

Choose TLS, authentication, or both to match the trust boundary between the GPU node and the scraper. Keep the configuration file and any credentials or certificates readable only by the required service accounts.
Restrict network reachability
Configure the host firewall, cloud network controls, or Kubernetes networking so only the intended Prometheus system or trusted monitoring network can reach the exporter. Do not expose the listener to the general internet. If the scraper is remote, test connectivity from that scraper after applying the restriction; a working local request alone does not establish that the intended remote path works.

Minimize exported fields
DCGM Exporter supports collector CSV or YAML configuration for field selection. Export only the fields needed for monitoring, rather than treating every available metric as necessary. NVIDIA describes the configuration options in its exporter documentation.

NVIDIA documents package-managed systemd, a standalone OCI container, and Kubernetes deployments managed through Helm or GPU Operator. The right choice depends on how the GPU driver and supporting software are managed in your environment; the documentation does not establish a performance advantage for one deployment type.

- Package and systemd: Run the exporter as a managed host service and configure its listener, web configuration, and firewall on the GPU host.
- Standalone container: Provide GPU access through the NVIDIA Container Toolkit and review port publishing, runtime permissions, and Linux capabilities before adapting NVIDIA’s example. The example includes
--cap-add SYS_ADMIN; do not copy privileges without assessing whether the deployment needs them. - Kubernetes: Use the existing GPU software lifecycle manager where possible. NVIDIA documents Helm and GPU Operator paths; if GPU Operator owns the exporter DaemonSet, avoid editing that generated resource directly. Configure exposure and access using the mechanisms appropriate to the chart or operator.
For compatibility, check NVIDIA’s DCGM support and compatibility information for the GPU, driver, DCGM, and runtime combination you plan to deploy. NVIDIA’s installation guide also describes deployment prerequisites and options.
Protect auxiliary surfaces, not just /metrics
The metrics listener is not the only possible source of sensitive operational information. Review these surfaces as part of deployment:

- Container runtime sockets: Avoid mounting a privileged runtime socket into the exporter container unless there is a clear need and strict access controls. A Docker-compatible runtime socket can expose privileged runtime metadata.
- Debug dumps: Restrict access to debug-dump directories and their contents; dumps can include device and workload metadata.
- Profiling endpoints: If pprof endpoints are enabled, keep them within the same web configuration protection and network restrictions as the other exporter endpoints. NVIDIA documents that web configuration covers enabled pprof endpoints.

Verify local service and remote scrape access
- Check locally on the GPU node: Request the configured exporter address at
/metricsusing the scheme and credentials or certificate required by your web configuration. - Confirm the expected telemetry: Inspect the response for the expected
DCGM_metric names. A reachable endpoint without the metrics you intend to collect is not a successful verification. - Test from Prometheus’s network location: Confirm that the intended scraper can connect and that an unrelated host cannot. This checks both reachability and the restriction you intended to enforce.
- For Kubernetes, verify through the Service: NVIDIA documents port-forwarding the Service as a way to test the endpoint. Use the same protection and access assumptions intended for the deployed service rather than treating a local port-forward as proof of remote network policy.
