Use the SSD maker’s documented Secure Erase, Sanitize, or cryptographic-erase procedure for the exact model and interface. Back up anything you need first, verify the target drive, complete every manufacturer prerequisite, and record the completion result. Deleting files, formatting a partition, or repeatedly overwriting the visible capacity is not a universal SSD sanitization method because wear leveling can redirect writes to different flash cells.

The current federal guidance is NIST Special Publication 800-88 Revision 2, published September 26, 2025. NIST defines sanitization as a process that makes access to target data infeasible for a specified level of effort. That is a risk- and assurance-based definition, not a promise that every consumer SSD can be proven “100% unrecoverable” in every condition.

What “securely erase” means for an SSD

Secure erasure is different from making files disappear from an operating-system file list. NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 describes media sanitization as a process that “renders access to target data on the media infeasible for a given level of effort.” The required level of effort depends on the information, your organization’s policy, and whether the drive will be reused, returned, or destroyed.

For an SSD, the practical goal is to invoke a controller-level operation that the manufacturer supports and documents for that drive. Depending on the model, that may be called Secure Erase, Sanitize, or cryptographic erase. NIST’s 2025 revision continues to recognize cryptographic erase and directs readers to standards such as IEEE 2883, applicable NSA specifications, or an organization-approved standard for other technique and tool details.

Do not treat a completed command as a universal forensic guarantee. The sources establish guidance and vendor procedures, not one recovery-proof method for every controller, firmware version, adapter, or failure state. If the data is highly sensitive, the drive has failed, or your policy requires a stronger assurance than the manufacturer can provide, use the approved destruction or qualified disposal route instead of improvising.

Why deleting or formatting an SSD is not enough

File deletion changes metadata, not necessarily every cell

Deleting a file normally removes references in the file system. A quick format creates a new file-system structure over the volume. Neither operation necessarily removes old NAND contents, and neither demonstrates that all previous data is inaccessible.

Wear leveling breaks the overwrite assumption

SSDs distribute writes among flash cells to extend service life. A host write to a logical block address can therefore be redirected by the controller; the old physical cell may remain until the controller later reclaims it. A NIST-hosted presentation from 2015, written in the Rev. 1-era context, specifically warned that ordinary overwriting can be unreliable on SSDs because of wear leveling and identified sanitize commands and cryptographic erase as other categories. Use that explanation as technical background, while choosing a current method from NIST Rev. 2 and the drive maker’s instructions.

Repeated passes do not create a universal proof

Writing random data across the addressable capacity may overwrite some logical locations, but it does not prove that every physical cell, spare block, or remapped area was changed. More passes can also add unnecessary wear without improving assurance. A controller-level operation designed for the drive is preferable to an improvised overwrite.

Before you erase: a safety and identification checklist

  • Back up first. Secure Erase and Sanitize operations are destructive. Samsung’s documentation explicitly warns that all data on the SSD will be removed.
  • Confirm the exact target. Record the manufacturer, model, capacity, serial number, and firmware version. Compare that information with the drive-selection screen before starting.
  • Identify the interface and connection. Determine whether the drive is SATA or NVMe and whether it is installed internally or connected through an adapter or enclosure. Vendor tools can have interface and connection limitations.
  • Check the disposition. A drive being handed to another person, returned under warranty, or sent for recycling may require different records and assurance than a drive retained inside the same organization.
  • Check your policy. For business, regulated, or classified information, follow the organization’s approved sanitization standard and retention requirements. NIST’s definition is tied to a specified level of effort, not to a single consumer workflow.
  • Keep power stable. Do not begin a destructive operation if the computer may lose power or enter sleep. Follow the manufacturer’s power and boot instructions exactly.

Choose the right erasure route

Compare methods by exact-drive support, the layer at which they operate, how completion is reported, and what you will do with the drive afterward.

Method What it changes SSD limitation Appropriate use
Delete files or quick-format a volume File-system references and volume metadata Does not establish that old NAND data or remapped blocks are inaccessible Preparing a volume after a separate sanitization; never as the sole sale or recycling step
Host-side overwrite Writes to logical block addresses visible to the operating system Wear leveling and spare areas can leave physical cells untouched; a 2015 NIST-hosted presentation warned of this limitation Only when an approved policy specifically allows it for the device and risk level; not a universal SSD solution
Manufacturer Secure Erase or Sanitize Uses the SSD controller’s supported media-erasure function Availability, naming, firmware requirements, and interface support vary by model Preferred route when the exact manufacturer documents it and reports successful completion
Cryptographic erase Invalidates or destroys the encryption key that protects stored data Requires a documented implementation and assurance that all relevant data is covered by that key Suitable when the drive maker and your policy explicitly support it
Physical destruction Damages the storage medium so reuse is impossible Must be performed by a qualified service and handled as electronic waste Failed drives, highly sensitive data, or cases where policy requires destruction rather than reuse

A generic “drive wiper” ranking is less useful than checking whether the method is documented for your model, interface, firmware, and intended disposition. The current guidance does not establish a universal vendor-by-vendor compatibility matrix.

Step-by-step: securely erase an SSD for transfer or recycling

1. Finish the backup and recovery work

Copy documents, photos, credentials, encryption-recovery material, and any application data you still need. Open a few important files from the backup or otherwise verify that the copy is usable. Do not start the erase until you have accepted that the operation will destroy the source data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Record and verify the drive identity

Use the operating system’s storage information, the computer’s firmware screen, or the label on the drive to record the manufacturer and exact model. Note whether it is SATA or NVMe and whether it is internal, in a USB enclosure, or behind another adapter. If more than one drive is installed, identify the target by model and capacity rather than by a generic name such as “Disk 0.”

3. Find the current instructions for that exact model

Start with the SSD manufacturer’s support documentation for the model and interface. Look specifically for Secure Erase, Sanitize, or cryptographic-erase instructions, supported operating systems, firmware prerequisites, and restrictions on adapters or external enclosures. Do not assume that a utility made for one manufacturer supports another brand’s SSD.

4. Apply every prerequisite before launching the command

Some workflows require current firmware, a particular connection, or a special boot environment. Samsung, for example, recommends updating SSD firmware before running Secure Erase. Its documentation describes Windows software, a DOS boot disk created on a USB flash drive, and Linux procedures, with device-state conditions for the Linux route. Those are Samsung-specific instructions, not a universal recipe for every SSD.

  • Brand Yourself - Brand the flash drive with your company's name and provide company's overview, policies, etc. to the newly joined employees or your customers

5. Select only the intended SSD

Read the model, capacity, and serial number shown by the vendor utility or boot environment. Disconnecting or powering down unrelated drives can reduce selection risk when the manufacturer’s procedure permits it. If the tool cannot clearly distinguish the target, stop rather than guessing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Run the documented Secure Erase, Sanitize, or cryptographic-erase operation

Follow the manufacturer’s sequence exactly, including any reboot into a vendor environment. Do not substitute a file deletion, quick format, or arbitrary overwrite when the instructions call for a controller-level operation. Keep the system powered and do not interrupt the process unless the vendor’s recovery instructions tell you to do so.

7. Capture the completion result

Record the tool’s success message, date, drive identity, firmware version, and any log or certificate the workflow provides. A generic partition check after the operation is not proof that sanitization occurred; it only shows what the operating system currently sees. If the utility reports an error, an unsupported state, or an uncertain result, treat the erase as unverified.

8. Prepare the drive for its next disposition

If you are reinstalling an operating system, do so only after the erase and according to the computer maker’s transfer or recovery instructions. For a bare drive being sold or recycled, follow the recipient’s intake requirements. Keep the sanitization record with your sale, return, or disposal documentation when policy requires it.

Samsung as a concrete manufacturer example

Samsung’s support material illustrates why model-specific instructions matter. Samsung states that Secure Erase removes data stored on the SSD and warns users to update firmware first. Its FAQ describes three routes: running Secure Erase through Magician in Windows, creating DOS boot media on a USB flash drive, and following Linux steps. The Linux procedure includes device-state conditions, so copying a command without checking those conditions can fail or target the wrong state.

Samsung Magician is designed for Samsung-branded storage products. Samsung states that Secure Erase and related functions are not supported for non-Samsung SSDs and documents additional interface and drive-state limitations. Therefore, do not install Magician as a general-purpose eraser for another manufacturer’s drive. Check the latest Samsung page for the exact supported model and software requirements before acting.

Samsung also explains wear leveling: writes are distributed across cells to prolong SSD service life. That behavior is why a host-side overwrite cannot be treated as proof that every physical location was changed.

When the standard workflow does not work

The utility does not detect the SSD

  • Recheck the model and interface, then compare the connection with the manufacturer’s supported configuration.
  • If the SSD is in a USB enclosure or adapter, verify whether the vendor allows Secure Erase through that bridge. Many controller-level functions require a direct supported connection.
  • Do not switch to an unrelated vendor utility simply because it detects the drive.

Secure Erase or Sanitize is unavailable

Read the model-specific support page for firmware, security-state, operating-system, and connection requirements. An unavailable option can mean the model does not expose that function in the current environment. If the manufacturer does not document a supported method, escalate to your organization’s approved standard or a qualified disposal provider.

The operation fails or reports an uncertain result

Stop treating the drive as sanitized. Preserve the error details, confirm the target identity, and consult the manufacturer’s recovery procedure. For sensitive information or a drive that is failing, choose qualified physical destruction or another policy-approved route rather than repeating undocumented commands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You already formatted or deleted the drive

Formatting is not a substitute for sanitization. If the SSD is still under your control, perform the documented controller-level operation before transfer. If it has already left your control, follow your incident or data-disposal policy and document what happened.

Reusing, selling, returning, or recycling: different decisions

Giving the SSD to another person

Use the exact-drive method, retain the completion record, and disclose only the information needed for the transaction. If an operating system will be installed for the recipient, complete the erase first and then follow the computer maker’s licensing and recovery process.

Returning a drive under warranty

Check the manufacturer’s return instructions. A failed or intermittently detected SSD may not complete a software sanitization. If the data is sensitive, tell the service provider that the drive could not be verified as sanitized and use the approved destruction or secure-return process.

Recycling or discarding

Recycling is a disposition decision, not an erasure method. For a working SSD, sanitize it before it enters the recycler’s custody. For a failed, encrypted-but-unverified, or highly sensitive drive, use a qualified service that can document destruction and electronic-waste handling under your policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to judge whether the result is adequate

Ask four questions before releasing the SSD:

  1. Exact support: Did the manufacturer document this method for this model, firmware, interface, and connection?
  2. Correct method type: Was it a controller-level Secure Erase, Sanitize, or documented cryptographic erase rather than only a host overwrite?
  3. Trust and validation: Did the vendor report completion, and does your applicable standard require additional validation, records, or independent review?
  4. Disposition fit: Is the assurance appropriate for reuse, return, recycling, or destruction?

If any answer is “no” or “unknown,” do not advertise the drive as securely erased. Escalate to the applicable organizational policy, IEEE 2883 or other required standard, the manufacturer, or a qualified disposal provider.

Key takeaways

  • NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2, published September 26, 2025, is the current edition identified in NIST’s publication record.
  • Deleting files, formatting, and repeated host overwrites do not universally sanitize SSD flash because of wear leveling and spare or remapped areas.
  • The safest general workflow is backup, exact-drive identification, manufacturer-documented Secure Erase, Sanitize, or cryptographic erase, completion capture, and disposition-specific validation.
  • Manufacturer tools have brand, interface, firmware, and drive-state limits. Samsung Magician, for example, is for supported Samsung-branded products, not other SSD brands.
  • There is no universal “100% unrecoverable” promise for every SSD and configuration. High-sensitivity, failed, unsupported, or uncertain cases belong with your approved standard and a qualified disposal route.
