Clicking a phishing link does not automatically mean your WhatsApp account was taken over. The correct response depends on what you can still access: if WhatsApp remains signed in, secure the account and inspect linked devices; if WhatsApp says your number was registered on another phone or you have been logged out, re-register the number immediately with the six-digit code sent to your SIM. That re-registration is WhatsApp’s stated way to remove another device from the account.
Do not share a registration code, two-step verification credential, or recovery code with anyone. The current recovery flow still uses a six-digit registration code in many accounts, but Meta announced in August 2026 that WhatsApp is upgrading two-step verification from a six-digit PIN to a longer password. Labels and availability can differ by app version and rollout.
First, identify which situation you are in
A phishing attempt can expose information without giving an attacker control of WhatsApp. Start with the symptom rather than assuming the worst. Use this decision table to choose the right path.
| What you see | What it usually means | First action |
|---|---|---|
| You clicked a link, but WhatsApp still works normally | Possible exposure; takeover is not proven | Review linked devices, enable two-step verification, and secure any account credentials you entered on the phishing page |
| WhatsApp says your number was registered on a new device, or you were logged out | Someone may have registered the number elsewhere | Open WhatsApp and re-register the same number with the code delivered by SMS or phone call |
| You cannot receive the code because the SIM or number is unavailable | The recovery prerequisite is missing | Restore control of the same phone number through your mobile carrier |
| The phone, email account, or carrier account may also be compromised | A broader identity or device incident may be involved | Secure those services separately; WhatsApp recovery alone does not remediate them |
Do not install an unofficial “recovery” app or pay a person who promises to bypass WhatsApp verification. The official process depends on proving control of the phone number.

If you are still signed in to WhatsApp
1. Check linked devices
On your phone, open WhatsApp and go to the linked-device screen. On Android, this is normally More options (three dots) > Linked devices. On iPhone, open Settings > Linked Devices. Review every active browser, desktop, tablet, or other session.
Tap a device you do not recognize and choose Log out. If several entries are unfamiliar, log out each one. A phishing page cannot be treated as proof that a particular device is malicious, so use the device name, location information shown by WhatsApp, and your own history when deciding what to remove. When in doubt, end the session and sign in again only on devices you control.
2. Turn on two-step verification
Open Settings > Account > Two-step verification and follow the prompts. WhatsApp describes this as an additional security layer and recommends enabling it. Keep the PIN or password private; do not send it to a contact, support account, or anyone claiming to be WhatsApp.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteMeta announced in August 2026 that WhatsApp is moving from a six-digit two-step verification PIN to a longer password. Your app may still display PIN wording, or it may show the newer password wording. Use the credential type and recovery options actually displayed in your version rather than following an older screenshot.
3. Change credentials that you entered on the phishing page
If you typed an email password, social-network password, banking login, or other credential into the link, change it from the genuine service’s app or website. Use a unique password and review that account’s active sessions and multifactor settings. This is separate from WhatsApp’s registration process. Changing a password by itself does not remove somebody who already took over WhatsApp; account takeover requires the WhatsApp re-registration procedure described below.
4. Preserve evidence without interacting with the scammer
Take screenshots of the message, sender number, website address, and any unusual WhatsApp notification. Do not reply with verification codes or click the link again to “test” it. Evidence can help your carrier, email provider, workplace administrator, or law-enforcement contact, although WhatsApp does not promise to identify the person behind an account access event.

If you were logged out or someone registered your number
WhatsApp’s compromised-account guidance says to recover the account by registering the same phone number again. You need access to the SIM or other service that receives calls and messages for that number.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the official WhatsApp application. If it shows a login screen, choose Log back in, then Continue when those labels appear.
- Enter your complete phone number in international format when prompted. Select the correct country code and do not add an extra leading zero unless WhatsApp’s field specifically requires it.
- Enter the six-digit registration code delivered by SMS or phone call. In some cases WhatsApp may verify the number automatically; follow the in-app prompt if that happens.
- Finish the setup screens and review your profile. Re-registering the number logs out devices that were using the account, including an attacker’s session.
Never disclose the six-digit registration code—not to a friend, family member, group administrator, “support agent,” or anyone who contacts you first. Anyone asking for that code is asking for the credential that proves control of your number.
If WhatsApp asks for a two-step verification PIN you do not know
An attacker may have enabled two-step verification on the account. Do not guess repeatedly and do not use a third-party reset service. WhatsApp’s current compromised-account guidance says to wait seven days and try again if you do not know the two-step PIN. The other person is logged out when you enter the six-digit SMS code, even if you do not know the PIN.
The exact wording may change as WhatsApp rolls out the longer-password version of two-step verification. Follow the waiting period and recovery instructions shown in the current app. The seven-day guidance applies to the compromised-account procedure documented by WhatsApp; it is not permission to share a code or bypass verification.
If the code never arrives
- Confirm that the number in WhatsApp matches the SIM currently in the phone, including country code.
- Check whether the SIM can receive ordinary SMS messages and phone calls.
- Use the call option if WhatsApp offers it and automatic verification has not completed.
- Do not request codes continuously; repeated attempts can trigger a temporary wait.
- Contact your mobile carrier if the SIM is inactive, replaced unexpectedly, or showing signs of an unauthorized transfer.
WhatsApp’s recovery requirement is access to the same phone number. If the number was transferred to another SIM without your permission, the carrier must restore it before the WhatsApp process can succeed.

Protect the two-step credential
Store the PIN or longer password in a reputable password manager or another private location. Do not reuse it for email, your carrier account, or any other service. If WhatsApp offers an email address for recovery, make sure that address is protected with its own unique password and multifactor authentication.
Use only the official WhatsApp application
Install WhatsApp through the official app store for your device. WhatsApp warns that modified or fake versions create privacy and security risks. Remove unofficial copies before signing in again, and update the official app when your device offers an update.
Tell contacts what happened
If an attacker may have read or sent messages, warn family, colleagues, and group members through a channel they can trust. Tell them to ignore unusual requests for money, gift cards, passwords, or verification codes that appear to come from you. Ask administrators of important groups to remove suspicious messages if necessary.
Block or report malicious accounts and content
WhatsApp provides block and report controls for problematic contacts and content. Use those controls for the sender or message that carried the phishing attempt. Reporting a malicious contact is different from reporting the compromised account you are trying to recover.
WhatsApp cautions that reporting the account you are attempting to recover could lead to a ban and loss of access or data. Complete account recovery first unless WhatsApp’s current instructions specifically direct otherwise.
Restore chats only if a backup exists
Account access and message history are separate. A Google Account or iCloud backup created before the incident may allow chats to be restored after you re-register, but WhatsApp cannot promise restoration without a usable backup.

Use the same phone platform and cloud account associated with the backup, and follow WhatsApp’s restore prompt during setup. Do not delete the only local copy of WhatsApp data before confirming that a cloud backup is available. A backup made after unwanted messages were sent may contain those messages; restoration is not a way to determine who accessed the account or when.
What this recovery process cannot tell you
- WhatsApp does not provide the identity of the person who accessed the account.
- WhatsApp does not provide the exact time or location of the access in the compromised-account guidance.
- Re-registering WhatsApp does not clean a phone infected with malware.
- It does not reset an email account, banking account, Apple Account, Google Account, or mobile-carrier account that may also have been exposed.
- It does not guarantee that deleted or un-backed-up messages can be recovered.
If the phishing page collected payment details, identity documents, email credentials, or carrier information, contact the affected provider using a verified number or app. If the phone itself behaves abnormally, update its operating system, remove suspicious applications, and seek device-security help appropriate to that platform. These steps address the separate compromise rather than replacing WhatsApp registration.

“I changed my WhatsApp password, but the other person is still there.”
WhatsApp states that changing a password does not remove someone who already took over the account. Re-register the phone number with the six-digit code sent to your SIM. Then inspect linked devices and configure two-step verification.
“The attacker is messaging my contacts.”
Warn contacts immediately using another channel and tell them not to send money or codes. Regain the account by re-registering the number; after access returns, inspect linked devices and block or report the malicious messages or contact.
“I know my SMS code, but the app demands a PIN I never set.”
Enter the SMS code as instructed, then follow WhatsApp’s seven-day wait guidance for the unknown two-step PIN. Do not try to guess the PIN or pay for a bypass.
“I can still use WhatsApp, so I ignored the warning.”
Being signed in does not prove that no one else has access. Review linked devices now, remove anything unfamiliar, and enable two-step verification. If you entered credentials on the phishing page, change those credentials at their real services.

WhatsApp warns that reporting the compromised account being recovered can result in a ban or loss of access or data. Use the official registration recovery flow first; use block/report controls for the scammer’s contact or content instead.
Prevent the next WhatsApp takeover
- Treat unexpected requests for a WhatsApp registration code as a scam, even when the sender appears to be someone you know.
- Keep two-step verification enabled and keep its credential private.
- Review linked devices periodically, especially after using a public or shared computer.
- Install only the official WhatsApp app and keep your phone’s operating system current.
- Protect the email account connected to recovery with a unique password and multifactor authentication.
- Ask your carrier what account PIN or port-out protections are available for your number.
- Before entering a password, inspect the domain and open the service through its official app or a bookmark instead of a message link.
Meta announced in August 2026 that WhatsApp is adding more context for some calls from people outside a user’s contacts, reflecting the principle that scammers rely on urgency and that users should pause before responding. That feature does not replace registration-code secrecy or the recovery steps above.
A concise recovery checklist
- Decide whether you are still signed in or have been logged out.
- If logged out, regain the same phone number through your SIM or carrier.
- Open the official app and choose Log back in > Continue when shown.
- Enter the full international number and the six-digit SMS or call code, or complete automatic verification.
- If an unknown two-step PIN blocks setup, wait seven days as WhatsApp instructs.
- Review and remove unknown linked devices.
- Enable the available two-step verification PIN or longer password.
- Change any non-WhatsApp credentials entered on the phishing page.
- Warn contacts, then block or report the malicious contact or content.
- Restore chats only from a confirmed Google Account or iCloud backup.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can clicking a WhatsApp phishing link alone take over my account?
Not necessarily. Clicking indicates exposure, but takeover is not proven while WhatsApp remains usable. Check linked devices and secure credentials you entered; use number re-registration only if WhatsApp reports a new-device registration or you lose access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWill re-registering WhatsApp delete my chats?
Re-registering removes other devices from the account, but chat restoration is a separate process. History can be restored only when a usable Google Account or iCloud backup exists.
Can WhatsApp tell me who accessed my account?
WhatsApp’s compromised-account guidance says it cannot provide the accessor’s identity or the time and location of access.
Is the seven-day wait still relevant after WhatsApp’s password update?
The current compromised-account guidance specifies a seven-day wait when you do not know the two-step verification PIN. Because WhatsApp is rolling out longer-password wording, follow the exact recovery instructions displayed in your app.
