Rockstar Games calls its two-factor feature 2-Step Verification. You enable it from your account’s Settings page, connect an authenticator app by scanning a QR code (or entering a secret key), and confirm the setup with your Rockstar password and a current app code.
Use an authenticator you can recover, turn on its cloud-backup option, and keep your device’s clock set automatically. Those preparations matter if you replace your phone or receive Rockstar error #0.200.4 when a code is rejected.
What Rockstar 2-Step Verification protects
Two-factor authentication adds a second sign-in requirement to your Rockstar Games account. After you enable it, a person trying to sign in needs both your password and a verification code displayed by your authenticator. Rockstar describes the protection this way: “With 2-Step Verification, anyone attempting to access your account will have to know your password and have your verification code at the same time.” That statement comes from Rockstar Games Support’s “Why Should I Add 2-Step Verification?” article, last updated May 20, 2024.

Think of the authenticator as a separate source of proof, not as a second password. The app generates changing codes for the Rockstar entry. Someone who knows your password but cannot use that authenticator still lacks the second factor. Conversely, a code alone is not enough without the account password.
What you need before setup
- Access to the Rockstar Games account and its current password.
- An email address associated with the account. Rockstar’s current setup-directory summary says the email may need to be verified before enrollment.
- A compatible authenticator app on a device you can keep available during setup. Rockstar lists Twilio Authy, Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and 1Password.
- A way to recover that authenticator later. Rockstar says every app on its compatible list offers cloud backups and strongly recommends enabling the relevant backup setting.
Install or update the authenticator before opening Rockstar’s enrollment screen. If you are using a browser-based authenticator, keep the browser window and the Rockstar settings page available at the same time. Do not delete an existing authenticator entry until you have successfully verified the replacement.
Have enough time to complete the enrollment in one session. The QR code and secret key are shown during setup, and the final step requires both your Rockstar password and a current code. If you stop after scanning but before selecting Verify, the account may not be enrolled.

Rockstar’s compatible-app list was last updated July 18, 2025. It does not rank the apps or identify one as more secure than the others. Select the one that is already available on your devices, that you know how to restore, or that fits your existing sign-in routine.

All four are presented by Rockstar as compatible options. The support material does not establish a security winner, a required paid plan, or a requirement to buy a separate device.
Choose based on practical continuity rather than a claimed ranking. For example, an app you already use and know how to restore may be less error-prone than installing an unfamiliar one just for this account. If you use more than one device, check how the app’s backup or synchronization works on those devices and complete a test restoration while the original phone is still available.
How to set up Rockstar 2-Step Verification
The support directory lists Rockstar’s setup article as updated August 18, 2026. The detailed enrollment instructions were last updated January 10, 2025, so the wording or location of a button can change. If a label differs, stay in the account’s security settings and follow the current on-screen prompt.

- Sign in. Open the Rockstar Games account sign-in page and authenticate with your username or email and password.
- Open the account menu. Select your account avatar.
- Open Settings. Choose Settings from the account menu.
- Choose 2-Step Verification. Open the 2-Step Verification tab or section.
- Start enrollment. Select Setup.
- Add the account to your authenticator. Scan the QR code shown by Rockstar with the authenticator app. If scanning is unavailable, choose the app’s manual-entry option and type the secret key Rockstar displays. Enter the key exactly; do not add spaces or omit characters.
- Confirm your identity. Enter your Rockstar account password when prompted.
- Enter the current app code. Type the verification code currently displayed for the Rockstar entry in your authenticator. Use a fresh code rather than one that is close to expiring.
- Finish. Select Verify. Wait for the confirmation before closing the page or removing the old authenticator entry.
If the QR code will not scan
Use the displayed secret key instead. In the authenticator, select the option to add an account manually, give the entry a recognizable name such as “Rockstar Games,” and enter the key exactly as displayed. A manual entry is not a different security method; it is an alternative way to load the same enrollment secret.
Keep the secret key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to add the Rockstar entry to another authenticator. Do not post a screenshot of the QR code or key, and do not send either one to a person offering unofficial account help.
If setup stops at email verification
Complete verification for the email attached to the Rockstar account, then return to Settings and the 2-Step Verification section. If the verification message is missing, check the address shown in account settings and the mailbox’s spam or junk folder before requesting another message.
Turn on authenticator backup immediately
After enrollment succeeds, open the authenticator’s own settings and enable its cloud-backup or synchronization feature. Rockstar recommends this because losing the phone without a restorable authenticator can also mean losing the second factor needed to sign in. Backup protects the authenticator data; it does not replace the Rockstar password or prove ownership of the Rockstar account.
Do not wait until a phone is lost to discover that backup was disabled or that you cannot complete the provider’s recovery checks. While the original device works, review the app’s recovery instructions and confirm which account or credentials are needed to restore entries.
Remembered devices: convenience with a boundary
During sign-in, Rockstar may offer to remember the device. Use that option only on a personally controlled computer or console environment where other people cannot use the account. Do not remember a device in a public computer lab, a borrowed machine, or a shared household computer if other users can access your profile. If you no longer trust a remembered device, sign out there and review the account’s security settings for available device-management controls.
Remembering a device does not disable 2-Step Verification everywhere. It changes the prompt for that remembered device, while a new or unrecognized device can still request the authenticator code. Treat the setting as a convenience choice, not as a substitute for protecting the account password or the authenticator.

How to move 2-Step Verification to a new phone
Rockstar’s migration guide was last updated January 6, 2025. You need access to the Rockstar account to remove the existing enrollment. Because settings labels can change, use the current labels shown in your account if they are not identical to these.

- Sign in to the Rockstar Games account.
- Select the account avatar, then open Settings.
- Open the 2-Step Verification section.
- Remove the existing authenticator device or enrollment.
- On the accessible new device, open the authenticator and add a new Rockstar entry by scanning the new QR code or entering the new secret key.
- Enter the Rockstar account password and the current code from the new authenticator.
- Select Verify and test a fresh sign-in before wiping or trading in the old phone.
Do not assume that installing the authenticator app on a second phone automatically transfers the Rockstar entry. Rockstar’s documented process requires removing the existing device and enrolling the authenticator on the new one.
If you still have the old phone, keep it powered and connected until the new code has worked in a sign-in test. That sequence gives you a fallback while you correct a typing error, a clock problem, or a mislabeled authenticator entry. Only after the new enrollment works should you erase the old phone or delete its Rockstar entry.
If you lose the phone or authenticator
Rockstar’s lost-device guidance, last updated July 9, 2025, directs users to the recovery process for the authenticator they used: Authy, Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or 1Password. Start with that provider’s recovery procedure. A successful provider recovery may restore the Rockstar entry if the app’s backup was enabled and the provider can verify you.
Rockstar does not promise that its account support team can bypass every lost-authenticator situation. If provider recovery does not restore the code generator, contact Rockstar Support and explain that the authenticator device is unavailable. Be ready to follow the identity or ownership checks Rockstar requires. Do not send your password or a one-time code to anyone claiming to offer an unofficial recovery.
When you still have the old phone
Keep the old phone powered and connected until the new enrollment has been verified. This gives you a working code while you remove the old device and tests the replacement before the old authenticator is erased.
When you enabled backup
Install the same authenticator on the replacement device, sign in to the app’s backup account if required, and restore the backed-up entries. Then follow Rockstar’s migration path to remove the old device and verify the new enrollment. Backup availability and the exact recovery prompts depend on the authenticator provider.

Fix rejected codes and error #0.200.4
Rockstar’s June 23, 2026 support article says error #0.200.4 can result from an incorrect or expired code, a changed authenticator device, or a time mismatch between the authenticator and the device.
Enter a fresh code
- Wait for the authenticator to display a new code.
- Type it exactly as shown, without spaces or extra characters.
- Submit it before the app replaces it. If it expires, wait for the next code rather than repeatedly submitting the old one.
Synchronize the clock
Time-based codes depend on the authenticator and the device using synchronized time. Turn on automatic date, time, and time-zone settings for the phone. Rockstar specifically advises Android users of Google Authenticator to use the app’s time-correction controls. On iPhone or iPad, make sure Set Automatically is enabled under the system date-and-time settings. Reopen the authenticator after correcting the clock and try a newly generated code.
Check for a device change
If you recently replaced, reset, or restored a phone, the account may still be tied to the previous enrollment. Follow the migration procedure: sign in, open Settings and 2-Step Verification, remove the existing device, enroll the authenticator on the accessible device, and verify it with your password and a new code.
Do not keep guessing
Repeatedly entering expired or mistyped codes does not repair an enrollment. Confirm that you are reading the code for the Rockstar entry, not another account in the authenticator, and then correct the time or migration issue that caused the failure.
Common setup mistakes to avoid
- Closing the setup page too early: The QR code being displayed does not mean enrollment is complete; you must enter the password and app code and select Verify.
- Deleting the old entry first: Preserve the old authenticator until the replacement has been tested, especially during a phone upgrade.
- Skipping backup: A working code today does not guarantee access after a lost or damaged phone. Enable the app’s cloud backup and learn its recovery process.
- Using a remembered shared device: Remembered-device convenience can let later sign-ins skip code entry on that machine.
- Typing the wrong entry: Authenticator apps can contain many accounts. Select the entry created for Rockstar Games.
- Assuming every label is permanent: The detailed Rockstar instructions date from January 10, 2025, while the setup directory was updated August 18, 2026. Follow the current account interface if names or placement have changed.

- Verify the email associated with the Rockstar account.
- Use one of Rockstar’s listed authenticator apps.
- Enroll by QR code or exact secret-key entry.
- Complete password and current-code verification.
- Enable the authenticator’s cloud backup.
- Test a sign-in before removing an old phone or authenticator.
- Keep automatic date and time enabled on the authenticator device.
- Remember only privately controlled devices.
- Know the provider recovery route before you lose the device.
Do you need to buy special hardware?
No purchase is established as necessary by Rockstar’s instructions. The documented process uses a compatible mobile or browser authenticator, a QR code or secret key, your Rockstar password, and the generated verification code. Rockstar does not state that a standalone security key, dedicated hardware OTP token, new phone purchased solely for authentication, or printed manual is required or recommended for this setup.
You can therefore start with an authenticator already available on a supported device. The important preparation is recovery: enable the app’s backup option and understand how to regain access, rather than buying hardware that Rockstar does not require.

The support directory lists the setup guide as updated August 18, 2026; the code-error guidance was updated June 23, 2026; and the compatible-app, migration, and lost-device articles were updated July 18, January 6, and July 9, 2025, respectively. The enrollment details themselves were last updated January 10, 2025. Those dates explain why a button may move or be renamed while the essential sequence remains: open account settings, enter 2-Step Verification, enroll an authenticator, and verify with the password and current code.

If an older walkthrough tells you to look for a different menu name, do not create a second enrollment or delete an existing one simply because the wording differs. Confirm that you are in the account avatar menu, the security settings area, and the 2-Step Verification section. When in doubt, follow Rockstar’s current support page and the controls displayed for your signed-in account.
