To secure home Wi-Fi, use WPA3-Personal when available (or WPA2-Personal), replace the router’s default administrator and Wi-Fi passwords, install software updates, and disable features you do not need. A guest network and sensible separation for connected devices can further limit exposure. These steps strengthen a network; they cannot guarantee protection from every attack.

Choose the strongest encryption your router supports

In the router’s wireless or security settings, select WPA3-Personal if it is available. If not, use WPA2-Personal. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) calls WPA3 the newer and best option, and says both WPA3 and WPA2 scramble information. FTC guidance on securing home Wi-Fi recommends avoiding older WPA and WEP encryption.

If your router offers only WPA or WEP, check for a software update first. If WPA2 or WPA3 remains unavailable afterward, consider replacing the router. Do not assume every router supports WPA3 or that every older device will work with every security setting; check compatibility for the devices you rely on.

Change the two passwords that protect different things

Your router administrator credentials control access to settings; your Wi-Fi password lets devices join the network. Change both from their defaults, and use separate, hard-to-guess credentials. Avoid putting your name, address, or router brand in the network name or either password. The FTC recommends a unique network name and password rather than relying on the defaults.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Update the router and disable features you do not need

Check the manufacturer’s instructions for software updates before setting up a router and periodically afterward. If your internet service provider supplied the router, ask how updates are delivered and whether you need to install them yourself. Updated software can address security issues, but update practices vary by provider and model.

In the router settings, review these controls:

  • Remote management: Turn it off if you do not need to manage the router over the internet. It exposes router controls beyond your home network.
  • Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS): Turn it off if you do not use it. WPS lets devices join without typing the Wi-Fi password.
  • Universal Plug and Play (UPnP): Turn it off if it is unnecessary. UPnP lets devices find one another on the network.
  • Firewall: Confirm the router’s built-in firewall is enabled.
  • Administrator session: Log out of the router account when you finish changing settings.

Menu names and locations vary by router, so use its documentation rather than assuming a particular path. The FTC explains these controls and recommends disabling remote management, WPS, and UPnP when they are not needed in its home Wi-Fi security guidance.

Give visitors and connected devices an appropriate network

Set up a guest network for visitors

A guest network has its own name and password, so visitors do not need your main Wi-Fi password. The FTC says this can also help keep malware on a guest’s phone or tablet from reaching devices on the primary network. Share the guest credentials instead of the main password when someone needs internet access.

Consider separating cameras and other connected devices

Some routers let you put connected devices, such as security cameras, on a separate network from computers and printers. Check the router’s documentation to understand what separation it actually provides; a feature name alone does not establish that devices are isolated in a particular way. The FTC recommends considering a separate network for home security cameras and offers broader advice for securing internet-connected devices.

Maintain security on devices connected to Wi-Fi

A well-configured router is only one part of home network security. For connected devices, the FTC recommends changing default device credentials, using two-factor authentication when offered, checking for firmware and app updates, and disabling unused features or disconnecting devices you no longer use. Keep the apps used to manage those devices updated as well.

What to check when replacing a router

If your current router cannot offer WPA2-Personal or WPA3-Personal after updates, replacement is a reasonable option. Compare the exact model’s WPA3-Personal support, how it receives firmware and security updates, whether it offers a guest network, and whether it can separate connected devices in a way that suits your household. Verify these features in current manufacturer documentation; a Wi-Fi generation label alone does not establish an update period or security support.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

Coverage, speed, and device compatibility may matter for day-to-day use, but they are not measures of security by themselves. For broader context on security outcomes and requirements for consumer-grade routers, see NIST’s Recommended Cybersecurity Requirements for Consumer-Grade Router Products, published September 10, 2024. It is a product-security profile, not a consumer buying guide or proof that a specific router meets every requirement.

A Wi-Fi Alliance certificate can help verify a particular device’s certified capabilities. For example, the CradlePoint R920-C7A certificate, dated August 29, 2024, identifies it as an access point for home or small office and lists WPA3-Personal among its certifications. This certification record is an example of how to check a claim, not a current retail recommendation.
