Start with your browser’s built-in defenses: block automatic pop-ups and redirects, keep phishing and download protection enabled, update the browser, remove suspicious extensions, and scan the device if settings or search results keep changing. In Microsoft Edge, these controls are available in Settings, but the exact menu names differ in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and mobile browsers.

These steps reduce exposure to browser hijacking, scam pop-ups, malicious search ads, and scareware. They cannot guarantee that every advertisement or compromised website will be blocked, so treat persistent redirects as a possible device-security problem rather than only a pop-up setting.

What browser hijacking and malicious redirects actually do

Browser hijacking is an unauthorized change to browser settings. A hijacker may replace your search engine or home page, alter new-tab behavior, inject advertising, or send searches through websites you did not choose. The redirect can be used to generate fraudulent advertising revenue, collect personal information, or steer you toward a malicious download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A malicious search ad is not always a separate pop-up window. It can appear as a paid result inside a normal results page, an in-page advertisement, or a link that sends you through several domains before arriving at a scam. That distinction matters because a pop-up blocker primarily controls automatically opened windows and tabs; it is not a complete advertisement filter.

Use the following sequence on a desktop Edge installation. The settings are strongest as a layered system: the browser blocks common behaviors, extensions add optional filtering, and a device scan investigates problems that browser settings alone cannot explain.

How do I stop malicious search ads and redirects?

1. Block automatic pop-ups and redirects in Edge

  1. Open Settings and more (the three-dot menu), then select Settings.
  2. Open Privacy, search, and services.
  3. Under Site permissions, select All permissions.
  4. Choose Pop-ups and redirects.
  5. Set the control to Blocked (recommended).

Edge enables this blocker by default. It prevents a website from automatically opening a new window or tab, which is the common pattern behind sudden advertising tabs, fake virus alerts, and forced redirect chains.

Use the Allow list sparingly. If a trusted work, banking, meeting, or publishing site genuinely requires a pop-up, add only that site as an exception and remove the exception when it is no longer needed. Do not allow pop-ups globally to make one site work.

Know what the pop-up blocker cannot stop

  • An advertisement rendered inside the current webpage is not an automatically opened pop-up. Microsoft states that “Website advertisements cannot be blocked by the Edge pop-up blocker.”
  • A new window opened after you deliberately select a page button or link may not be blocked, because the action followed a user gesture.
  • Desktop alerts that remain after the browser is closed may be website notifications, a separate permission from pop-ups.

If the problem is an advertisement embedded in a page, use the site’s own controls or a reputable ad-blocking extension from the browser’s official store. If the problem is persistent operating-system notifications, review notification permissions for individual sites rather than changing the pop-up setting.

2. Check every exception you already granted

In the same Pop-ups and redirects screen, inspect the allowed-sites list. Remove domains you do not recognize, old test entries, and broad permissions that were added merely to dismiss an error message. A legitimate exception should identify a specific site and a specific need; it should not be a blanket permission for unknown domains.

Keep Edge’s phishing, download, and network protections on

SmartScreen

Microsoft identifies SmartScreen as protection against phishing sites and malicious downloads. In Edge, open Settings, go to Privacy, search, and services, and find the Security section. Keep Microsoft Defender SmartScreen enabled unless an administrator has a documented reason to manage it differently.

SmartScreen is a warning and blocking layer, not proof that every page is safe. If a page is unfamiliar, do not bypass a warning simply because the page claims that the warning is a mistake. Navigate to the organization’s known address yourself instead of following a suspicious advertisement.

Secure DNS

Edge’s secure DNS option encrypts DNS queries. DNS is the lookup step that translates a domain name into a network address; protecting that query can reduce exposure to interception and some forms of tampering. Microsoft describes secure DNS as helping protect against phishing and malware, but it is one protective layer, not a guarantee that a destination is trustworthy.

Review the secure DNS setting under Edge’s Privacy, search, and services options. If your employer, school, VPN, or network administrator supplies a specific DNS service, follow that policy rather than creating a conflicting configuration.

Update the browser

Open Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge. Allow Edge to check for and install available updates, then restart when requested. Updates can change security behavior, repair vulnerabilities, and refresh lists used for malicious-site detection.

Keep the operating system updated as well. Browser protection is weaker when the underlying device is missing security fixes, and Microsoft’s hijacking guidance recommends current browser and operating-system software as part of prevention.

Potentially unwanted applications

Microsoft Learn documentation describes potentially unwanted application protection for Edge versions 80.0.361.50 and later. If your organization manages this feature, check its policy and current Edge version before changing it. The setting is intended to reduce unwanted software that may alter browsing behavior, but it does not replace a full malware scan.

Review extensions before blaming the browser

Extensions can read pages, change search behavior, inject advertising, and redirect links. A newly installed or recently updated extension is therefore an important suspect when the browser changes without an obvious setting change.

  1. Open Edge’s extensions management page from Settings and more > Extensions.
  2. Disable every extension temporarily, especially anything installed shortly before the problem began or anything you do not recognize.
  3. Test the sites that were redirecting you.
  4. If the symptom stops, enable extensions one at a time, testing between each change.
  5. Remove the extension that brings the behavior back, then review any other extensions that had broad permissions.

This one-at-a-time method identifies interference without guessing. It also distinguishes an extension problem from a device-wide infection. Do not install an extension merely because a pop-up recommends it. If you need ad or tracker filtering, choose a reputable extension from the official store, inspect its publisher and requested permissions, and keep a record of what you installed.

An extension that works in one browser may not have identical permissions or behavior in another. Do not assume that an extension’s store listing makes it harmless, and do not run multiple extensions that perform overlapping page rewriting unless you understand their interaction.

Recognize scareware before it persuades you to act

Scareware uses a frightening page to make you call a number, install software, pay money, or grant remote access. Typical signs include a full-screen page, loud alarms or repeated audio, a fake infection count, urgent claims that your files are being deleted, and instructions to contact “support” immediately.

A page can imitate a system dialog without having any authority over your device. Do not call a number displayed in an unexpected browser tab, do not grant remote-control access to a stranger, and do not download a “cleaner” offered by the warning page.

Edge’s scareware blocker

Microsoft Edge includes a scareware blocker that looks for suspicious full-screen behavior. Microsoft says the feature is enabled by default on devices with more than 2 GB of RAM and at least five processor cores. It is not enabled by default at 2 GB of RAM or less than five cores, and it is unsupported below 1 GB of RAM or with fewer than two cores. These hardware-dependent defaults mean you should verify the setting on your own device instead of assuming it is active.

When it detects a suspected scam, the feature can exit full-screen mode, stop aggressive audio, and display a warning. Detection can be wrong, so Edge provides a way to report false positives. Treat the warning as a reason to pause and verify the site, not as an infallible verdict.

What to do if your browser keeps redirecting you

Use this escalation sequence. Stop after the step that resolves the problem, but continue to the device check when a browser-only fix does not hold.

Step 1: Record the exact symptom

Note whether the problem is an automatically opened tab, an altered search engine, an in-page advertisement, a notification, or a full-screen warning. Write down the destination domain and whether the behavior occurs after a particular click. This classification prevents you from trying a pop-up fix for a notification or an extension fix for a single page’s advertisement.

Step 2: Confirm the pop-up setting and exceptions

Return to Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All permissions > Pop-ups and redirects. Confirm that blocking is enabled and remove unfamiliar allowed sites. Test again in a fresh tab.

Step 3: Disable extensions and re-enable them individually

Turn off all extensions, test the affected workflow, and then restore them one by one. If a particular extension reproduces the redirect, uninstall it and obtain a replacement only from the official browser store. If the behavior continues with every extension disabled, move to the next step rather than repeatedly reinstalling extensions.

Step 4: Update Edge and clear the cache

Install pending Edge updates from Settings > About Microsoft Edge. Then clear cached browser data and restart Edge. Cached files can preserve a broken or unwanted page resource, although clearing the cache will not remove malware that is installed on the device.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

Step 5: Review third-party cookies

Microsoft includes blocking third-party cookies among the measures to consider when pop-ups persist. Third-party cookies allow a domain different from the site you are visiting to store or read browser data. Blocking them can reduce cross-site tracking and some unwanted behavior, but it may also sign you out or break embedded payment, video, or login components. Apply the stricter setting, test the sites you need, and create narrowly scoped exceptions only when necessary.

Step 6: Scan the device for malware

Run a reputable security scan when settings changed without your permission, downloads started unexpectedly, or redirects continue after the extension test. Microsoft describes hijackers as malware that can alter browser settings and directs users to scan the device when pop-up problems persist.

Do not download a scanner from the suspicious page that is warning you about an infection. Use the security software already supplied by your operating system or a security product obtained from its verified publisher. If a scan identifies a threat, follow the product’s removal and restart instructions, then recheck Edge settings.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 7: Recheck permissions after cleanup

After the scan, inspect pop-up exceptions, extensions, search settings, and site notifications again. A removed program may have left behind an allowed domain or extension entry. If the symptom returns immediately after cleanup, preserve the destination domains and timestamps for your organization’s administrator or security support team instead of repeatedly visiting the warning page.

Choose the right layer for the threat

Observed problem Best first control What it can do Important limit
Automatic new tabs or windows Edge Pop-ups and redirects set to Blocked Stops many windows opened automatically by a site Does not block every in-page advertisement or a window opened after a deliberate click
Paid or tracking ads inside a page Reputable ad-blocking extension or the site’s own controls Can filter page content and some trackers Adds software that must be trusted and can interfere with websites
Phishing page or malicious download SmartScreen, cautious navigation, and current software Warns about many known dangerous sites and downloads No detection service catches every newly created or compromised site
Search engine or home page changed Extension review followed by a device malware scan Finds unwanted browser components and possible hijackers A browser setting alone may not remove software installed on the device
Persistent desktop alerts Review individual site notification permissions Removes permission for a site to send browser notifications Notifications are separate from pop-up blocking
Full-screen alarm and fake infection warning Leave full screen, close the page, and use scareware protection Can exit full screen, stop aggressive audio, and warn about suspected scams Hardware-dependent defaults and occasional false positives apply

Prevent redirects before they start

  • Download browsers, extensions, and software from the publisher’s trusted source or the browser’s official store.
  • Do not click suspicious links in unsolicited messages, search ads, or urgent “account expired” notices.
  • Read the installer screens. Decline optional browser extensions, search changes, and bundled software you did not request.
  • Keep only extensions you actively use. Fewer extensions mean fewer components with permission to alter pages.
  • Do not grant remote access because a webpage demands it. Close the tab and contact the organization through a separately verified channel.
  • Use a separate browser profile or InPrivate only for privacy needs, not as a malware remedy. Microsoft describes InPrivate as avoiding storage of browsing history, cookies, and other local data after the session; it does not disinfect a device or prevent a hijacker.
  • Teach other users of the device that a loud warning is an intimidation technique, not evidence that the page has scanned the computer.

How these instructions differ outside Edge

The menu paths above are current Microsoft Edge paths. Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and mobile browsers provide comparable controls, but labels, defaults, and locations change by browser version and operating system. Look for settings named pop-ups and redirects, site permissions, notifications, safe browsing, or fraudulent website protection in the browser’s own settings. Do not copy an Edge path into another browser and assume the same control exists.

On a managed work or school device, an administrator may lock SmartScreen, DNS, extensions, or notification policies. If a control is unavailable or immediately reverts, ask the administrator rather than installing an unofficial workaround. On mobile, use the browser’s app settings and the operating system’s notification and application-permission controls; desktop instructions should not be treated as mobile steps.

A practical security checklist

  • Pop-ups and redirects are set to Blocked (recommended) in Edge.
  • The allowed-sites list contains only domains with a clear business or personal need.
  • SmartScreen is enabled and Edge shows that it is up to date.
  • Secure DNS is enabled where it does not conflict with an administrator’s network policy.
  • Unknown or recently installed extensions are disabled and tested individually.
  • Site notification permissions have been reviewed when alerts appear outside normal tabs.
  • Third-party cookies have been considered, with exceptions limited to sites that break without them.
  • A device malware scan has been run when redirects persist or settings changed unexpectedly.
  • Full-screen warnings, alarm sounds, phone numbers, and remote-access demands are treated as scam indicators.
  • InPrivate is used for local privacy, never as a substitute for updates, blocking, or malware removal.
