The current Battle.net Authenticator is built into Blizzard’s Battle.net mobile app for iOS and Android. Install the official app, sign in to your Battle.net account, and follow its prompts to connect the authenticator. After setup, Battle.net can ask you to approve a sign-in with a one-tap push notification or from inside the app. This optional two-factor authentication adds a second check beyond your password, helping block unauthorized access when a password is exposed.
What the Battle.net Authenticator does
An authenticator protects an account by requiring two different types of proof. The first is something you know: your Battle.net password. The second is something you control: access to the Battle.net mobile app on your phone. A stolen or reused password is therefore less useful to an attacker who cannot complete the authenticator request.
Blizzard describes the feature as optional two-factor authentication intended to safeguard an account from unauthorized access. It is an account-security layer, not a replacement for a strong password, a clean computer, or caution around suspicious messages.
The current documented authenticator experience is part of the Battle.net mobile app rather than a separate desktop program. Blizzard describes the app-based feature for both iOS and Android. The exact screens and wording can change, so use the prompts shown in the current app instead of relying on an old screenshot or a guide that names buttons you do not see.

Before you attach an authenticator
Prepare the information and access you may need before starting. This reduces the chance of being locked out halfway through setup.
- Have access to the email address used for your Battle.net account.
- Know your current Battle.net password, or complete an account-password reset before trying to attach the authenticator.
- Use the official Battle.net mobile app listing in the iOS or Android storefront. Do not install an APK or modified copy from an untrusted site.
- Keep the phone on which you intend to use the app available whenever you sign in.
- Make sure you can complete any account-recovery or verification prompt that Blizzard presents during setup.
- Decide how you will regain access if the phone is lost, replaced, reset, or unavailable. Recovery options depend on your account and region.
Do not send your password, approval request, or any one-time code to another person. Blizzard warns that phishing messages and imitation sites are common ways attackers steal account details. Start from the Battle.net app or a Blizzard account page you opened yourself rather than a link in an unexpected email or chat message.
How to attach the authenticator in the Battle.net app
Blizzard’s published setup direction is deliberately high level: install the mobile app, sign in, and follow its prompts to connect the account. Because the app interface is revised over time, these steps describe the stable path without inventing labels that may not match your version.

Check that you are using the current listing and not a third-party download.
- Open the app and sign in. Enter the email address and password for the Battle.net account you want to protect. If you cannot sign in, resolve that problem through Blizzard’s account-recovery process before attaching an authenticator.
- Choose the authenticator setup when it is offered. Follow the in-app prompts to connect the authenticator to your account. The names, locations, and order of these prompts can change between app versions.
- Complete the requested verification. Blizzard may ask you to confirm account ownership or approve the connection. Use only information and codes generated for your own session.
- Finish the connection and test a sign-in. After the app confirms that the authenticator is attached, sign out only if you can safely sign back in. A test verifies that notifications arrive and that you recognize the approval flow.
- Approve future sign-ins in the app. When Battle.net requests verification, tap the push notification or open the authenticator in the app and approve the request as prompted.
If the app does not show an authenticator option, update the app through the normal storefront, restart it, and check that you signed in to the intended Battle.net account. Do not attach the feature to a different account merely because it is the first account displayed.

What signing in looks like after setup
Your password remains the first step. A second approval can then appear as a push notification on the phone or as a request inside the Battle.net app. Read the request before approving it. If you are not actively signing in, deny it and treat the unexpected request as a possible warning that someone has your password.
An approval is not a substitute for checking the destination of a login page. Enter credentials only on Blizzard’s genuine sign-in experience, and never type a one-time code into a page reached from an unsolicited message. If the app displays a one-time code for a particular flow, keep it private and use it only where the official app instructs.
Recovery choices when the phone or authenticator is unavailable
Blizzard’s support catalog includes “How to attach an Authenticator to your Battle.net account,” “How to remove your Blizzard Authenticator,” and guidance for lost or inaccessible authenticators. The correct path depends on what access you still have; there is no single recovery procedure that applies to every account or country.

| Your situation | Best next action | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| You are still signed in somewhere and still control the account | Open the current Blizzard Support flow for removing or replacing the authenticator, then follow the identity checks shown for your account. | Support may present different verification requirements than another account. |
| You have access to the phone number associated with the account but lost the authenticator | Check whether Battle.net Phone Notifications is offered for your account and region. Blizzard describes it as a possible way to remove a lost authenticator, unlock an account, recover an account name, or reset a password. | Eligibility, supported regions, and available recovery screens are not universal. |
| You can access neither the authenticator nor the associated phone | Use Blizzard’s account-recovery process and provide the ownership information it requests. Start with the support article for a lost or inaccessible authenticator. | Do not assume that SMS, a particular document, or a specific recovery screen will be available in your region. |
| You believe someone else accessed the account | Recover the account first, then secure the Battle.net account and the computer or phone used to access it before continuing with support. | Changing only the Battle.net password may leave a compromised device or email account exposed. |
Phone Notifications can also alert you about password changes and additions or removals of security features. If Blizzard offers that option during recovery, read the enrollment and eligibility information shown for your account before relying on it as your only fallback.

Phone numbers, SMS, and other verification methods
A phone number is optional when creating a Battle.net account, although some services use SMS. Do not interpret that as a universal requirement for the authenticator. Blizzard presents the app authenticator as an alternative verification method when SMS delivery is unreliable, but availability and recovery choices can vary by region and account.
SMS and app approvals also have different failure modes. A delayed text message does not necessarily indicate that the account is compromised, while an unexpected app approval request can indicate that someone knows your password. In either case, do not approve a request you did not initiate and do not disclose a code.
Blizzard also mentions passkeys as an additional account-security measure. Treat a passkey as another layer rather than a reason to remove every other recovery method. Set up only options that you can maintain and recover securely.

- Stop approving unfamiliar requests. Deny any authenticator prompt that you did not trigger. Do not reply to a suspicious message to “confirm” the activity.
- Recover the account through Blizzard. Use the official account-recovery flow rather than a link supplied by a stranger or an in-game message.
- Change the Battle.net password. Use a new password that is unique to Battle.net and has not appeared on another site.
- Secure the email account. If the Battle.net email address may also be compromised, change that account’s password and review its recovery settings and active sessions.
- Secure the computer and phone. Remove suspicious software, install operating-system and browser updates, and run the security checks appropriate to your device before signing in again.
- Review security changes. Check for unexpected authenticator additions or removals, password changes, and phone-notification changes. Tell Blizzard Support about anything you did not authorize.
- Reattach or reset the authenticator only after recovery. If the old phone is no longer trustworthy, use the supported removal or replacement path rather than continuing to approve prompts from it.
Blizzard’s security guidance treats the account and the computer as connected parts of the problem. A clean password on an infected computer can be captured again, so device security belongs in the recovery process.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Security practices that make the authenticator effective
Use a unique Battle.net password
Do not reuse the Battle.net password for email, social networks, game services, or shopping accounts. If another service suffers a breach, reused credentials can be tested automatically against Battle.net. A password manager can generate and store a different password for each account; protect the manager with a strong master password and its own recovery method.
Treat every approval as a security decision
Push approval is convenient, but convenience can become a weakness if you tap through requests without reading them. Approve only a sign-in you just initiated. Several unexpected requests in a short period can be a sign that an attacker is trying to wear down your attention; deny them and change the password through the official account flow.

Recognize phishing
Phishing pages can copy Blizzard’s branding and ask for your email, password, or authenticator code. Be especially cautious with urgent warnings about bans, free items, account verification, or expiring rewards. A message that asks you to move the conversation to another site or disclose a code is not made trustworthy by knowing your character name.

- Open the Battle.net app or type the known account address yourself instead of following an unexpected link.
- Check the address and spelling before entering credentials.
- Never give an approval code to a person claiming to be support, a guild member, or a tournament organizer.
- Do not install a “security tool” or browser extension sent through game chat.
Troubleshooting common setup and sign-in problems
The app is installed but does not show the authenticator
Confirm that you are signed in to the intended Battle.net account and that you installed the current app from the official iOS or Android storefront. Close and reopen the app, install any available app update, and follow the account’s current in-app prompts. If the feature still does not appear, use Blizzard Support’s current authenticator-attachment article rather than following instructions written for an older app.
Push notifications do not arrive
Open the Battle.net app directly to see whether an approval is waiting there; Blizzard supports approvals from inside the app as well as through a push notification. Check the phone’s notification permission and network connection without approving a request you did not start. If the problem persists, use the support flow for an inaccessible authenticator instead of repeatedly retrying unknown prompts.
You changed or reset your phone
A phone replacement can leave the authenticator inaccessible even when the Battle.net password is correct. Use the supported removal or recovery process. If Battle.net Phone Notifications is available to your account and region, it may provide a recovery route, but Blizzard does not state that this option is universal.
You are asked for SMS but cannot receive it
Do not assume that the app authenticator has failed. Blizzard describes the authenticator as an alternative verification method when SMS delivery is unreliable. Look for the app-based approval or the recovery option presented in the current sign-in flow. Availability depends on the account and service involved.
You receive an approval request while not signing in
Deny the request, change the Battle.net password from the official account flow, and review the account and email security settings. If you cannot regain control, start account recovery and secure the device used to access the account before contacting support.
What the authenticator can—and cannot—protect
| It helps protect against | It does not fix by itself |
|---|---|
| An attacker signing in with a stolen Battle.net password but without access to your app | A phishing page where you voluntarily enter your password and approve a fraudulent request |
| Some account takeovers caused by reused or exposed passwords | Malware or a keylogger on the computer or phone you use to sign in |
| Unauthorized sign-ins that trigger a visible approval request | A compromised email account, weak recovery settings, or an attacker who already controls your phone |
The practical goal is layered security: a unique password, an attached authenticator, protected email and devices, and skepticism toward unexpected messages. Removing one layer because another is convenient makes recovery harder, not easier.
Account-security checklist
- Install the official Battle.net mobile app for iOS or Android.
- Sign in and complete the app’s current prompts to attach the authenticator.
- Test that you can approve a sign-in from a push notification or inside the app.
- Use a unique Battle.net password and never share it or a one-time code.
- Keep access to your account email and understand the recovery route for a lost phone.
- Consider passkeys or Battle.net Phone Notifications when Blizzard offers them for your account and region.
- Deny unrequested approvals and begin recovery if you suspect compromise.
- Secure the computer and phone as well as the Battle.net account.
Bottom line
Attach the authenticator through the Battle.net mobile app, approve only sign-ins you initiated, and maintain a unique password and reliable recovery path. If the phone is lost or the account is compromised, use Blizzard’s current support flow for removing or recovering an authenticator; the available phone-notification and SMS options depend on your account and region.
