Secure the host and its network path before you turn on Remote Desktop. If the computer only needs to be used locally, leave Remote Desktop disabled. Microsoft’s setup guidance puts it plainly: “If you only need to use your PC locally, there’s no need to enable Remote Desktop.” Enabling the feature permits remote access to the PC’s applications, files and reachable network resources, and it opens an inbound service that must be protected.
For a single PC, the safest general design is: a supported Windows edition, Network Level Authentication (NLA) enabled, strong unique passwords, access granted only to named users, and Remote Desktop reachable through a trusted local network or a properly secured VPN. For an organization running Remote Desktop Services (RDS), use an RD Gateway and planned multifactor authentication rather than treating a home-PC setting as an enterprise access architecture.
Decide whether Remote Desktop should be enabled at all
Remote Desktop is useful when you need to operate a Windows PC while you are away from it, but it is unnecessary for a machine that is always used in person. Every enabled remote-access service adds another path that must be authenticated, authorized and monitored. If there is no genuine remote-use requirement, the most secure configuration is to keep the feature off.
When remote use is required, define the exact scope before changing Windows settings:

- Which computer will accept connections?
- Which named people or service accounts need access?
- Will connections come only from a trusted local network, or from outside it?
- Is this an individual PC or an organizational RDS deployment?
Those answers determine whether ordinary Windows Remote Desktop is appropriate, whether a VPN is needed, and whether an RD Gateway is the right enterprise component.
Confirm that the Windows host can accept incoming connections
Check the Windows edition
Microsoft lists Windows Professional, Enterprise, Education and Windows Server editions as capable of hosting incoming Remote Desktop connections. Windows Home can use a Remote Desktop client to connect to another computer, but it cannot act as the standard incoming host for this feature. Check the edition before attempting configuration; upgrading or changing the access design may be necessary if the computer runs Home.
In Windows, open Settings > System > About and read the Windows specifications section. You can also run winver to identify the installed release. The person changing the setting needs administrative rights on the PC.

Note the computer name shown in Settings > System > About. On a local network or VPN, the Remote Desktop client can normally use that name if local name resolution works; otherwise, use the host’s appropriate internal address. Do not publish a private address or computer name as if it were a public security boundary. The network path still has to restrict who can reach the host.
Harden the PC before switching the feature on
1. Keep Network Level Authentication enabled
NLA requires the connecting user to authenticate before a full Windows session is created. Microsoft recommends NLA for most environments and says to keep it enabled whenever possible. In Settings > System > Remote Desktop, leave Require devices to use Network Level Authentication (recommended) selected.
Do not turn NLA off as a casual troubleshooting step. An old Remote Desktop client may fail to negotiate NLA, but first update or replace that client, or verify whether it can be brought to a supported configuration. Disabling NLA to accommodate an obsolete endpoint removes an important pre-session protection and should be treated as an exception requiring a specific risk decision.

2. Use strong, unique credentials
Every account permitted to connect should have a strong password that is not reused on another service. Never create a shared “remote” account for convenience; individual accounts preserve accountability and make it possible to remove one person’s access without changing everyone else’s password. Protect administrator accounts especially carefully, because an RDP session can provide access to the host’s applications, files and connected network resources.
Password strength does not compensate for excessive account access. Review which users are allowed to connect and remove accounts that no longer need the capability.
3. Grant access only to named users
In the Remote Desktop settings page, select Remote Desktop users (the label may appear as Select users that can remotely access this PC) and add only the people who need access. Review the resulting list instead of assuming that every local account should be eligible. Use the least privilege that still lets the person perform the required work.
For a managed computer, coordinate this list with the organization’s account and offboarding process. Removing a user from the allowed list is only one part of revoking access; also disable or remove the underlying account when it is no longer needed.
4. Check the host firewall without treating it as a public invitation
The host firewall must permit Remote Desktop on the network profile where you intend to use it. Verify that the relevant inbound rule is enabled for the intended trusted or domain network and not broadly enabled on networks where the PC should not accept connections. A firewall rule that allows RDP is a prerequisite for a connection; it is not evidence that exposing the service to the public internet is safe.

Test the rule from an approved network path after the host is configured. If a connection fails, check the firewall scope and the network profile before weakening other controls.

5. Keep the host’s physical and account security in scope
Remote Desktop protection is not separate from ordinary Windows security. Anyone who can sign in through an allowed account receives that account’s local permissions. Limit administrative membership, protect the device and its recovery credentials, and make sure the people authorized to connect understand that their session can reach the same resources as an interactive login.
Choose the network path before you enable remote access
The access path is as important as the Windows toggle. Microsoft’s guidance distinguishes trusted-network access, VPN access and direct port forwarding.

For a home or small-office PC, prefer VPN access for off-network use
Why a VPN is the safer default
A VPN places the remote client on the private network through an authenticated tunnel. After the VPN connects, the user’s Remote Desktop client can reach the PC as though it were on that network, without publishing the PC’s RDP listener directly to the internet. Microsoft’s guidance prefers a VPN over forwarding RDP to the public internet.
A VPN is not a substitute for host hardening. Keep NLA, strong passwords, named-user authorization and the host firewall controls in place. The VPN endpoint also needs secure authentication and ongoing maintenance; a weak VPN account can become another route into the same network.
Recommended setup sequence
- Configure and secure the VPN endpoint on the router, firewall or server that provides remote network access.
- Create individual VPN credentials or use the organization’s approved identity system. Do not share one VPN account among several people.
- Limit the VPN route to the networks and hosts the user actually needs when the VPN technology supports that control.
- On the Windows host, open Settings > System > Remote Desktop, enable Remote Desktop, keep NLA selected and add the required users.
- From a client on the VPN, connect to the host’s internal computer name or address. Confirm that the connection succeeds without making the host publicly reachable.
- Disconnect the VPN and verify that the same Remote Desktop endpoint is not reachable from an untrusted network.
If the VPN client connects but Remote Desktop cannot find the host, troubleshoot the private route, name resolution and the host firewall scope. Do not respond by opening the RDP rule to every network.
Understand the risk of port forwarding
Port forwarding sends an inbound connection from a router’s public address to the Windows PC. The usual RDP port is 3389. Microsoft warns that this makes the PC available to internet traffic and says the approach is not recommended. A forwarded port can be scanned and attacked by anyone who can reach the public address, regardless of whether you expect a particular person to connect.

If forwarding cannot be avoided, treat it as an explicitly accepted exception:

- Allow only named accounts on the PC; do not broaden access to every local user.
- Restrict the router rule to known source IP addresses or networks whenever the router supports source filtering.
- Keep the host firewall limited to the same intended scope.
- Document who approved the exposure, which source addresses are allowed and how the rule will be removed.
- Do not present a changed external port as a security control. Obscuring the port does not replace authentication, authorization or network restriction.
Microsoft’s wording is deliberately direct: forwarding means “You’re opening your PC up to the internet, which isn’t recommended.” Source-IP restrictions reduce the number of systems that can reach the listener, but they do not turn public-facing RDP into a risk-free design.

Turning on Remote Desktop in Windows settings is appropriate for a single supported PC. An organization that publishes desktops or applications to many users should plan a Remote Desktop Services architecture instead of forwarding each workstation’s RDP port.
What RD Gateway adds
Microsoft describes RD Gateway as a role that establishes an encrypted SSL tunnel, authenticates the user and passes the connection to the specified internal resource. In production, use a publicly trusted certificate for the gateway. Administrators can define RD Connection Authorization Policies (RD CAPs) to control who may connect through the gateway and RD Resource Authorization Policies (RD RAPs) to control which computers or resources those users may reach.
Configure session timeouts for unattended connections as part of the deployment’s operating policy. Gateway controls do not remove the need to secure the destination hosts; each host still needs appropriate user authorization, NLA and firewall rules.
Plan MFA as an identity and network project
Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Services MFA planning guidance describes a common architecture consisting of an RD Gateway, Network Policy Server (NPS), Microsoft Entra ID and the NPS extension. MFA adds a second authentication factor to the gateway flow, but it does not replace authorization policies or host hardening.

Before deployment, decide how users will enroll, how a lost or replaced authentication device will be recovered, whether conditional-access rules apply and which firewall paths are required for the MFA service endpoints. Test the recovery process before users depend on it. An MFA prompt that cannot be completed during an outage is an availability problem, while an unplanned bypass can become a security problem.
Use certificates and policies deliberately
The gateway certificate must be trusted by connecting clients and should be issued by a publicly trusted authority for a production service. Keep the certificate’s renewal process documented. Review RD CAP and RD RAP membership as people, roles and published resources change; a gateway that authenticates a user but authorizes too many destinations still provides excessive access.
Use Remote Credential Guard only when its requirements match the scenario
Remote Credential Guard is an additional credential-protection feature, not a universal “secure RDP” switch. In a supported direct RDP connection, it redirects Kerberos requests back to the client so credentials and their derivatives are not passed to the remote host.

Microsoft’s requirements and limitations matter:
- The client and host must support the feature.
- Kerberos must function for the connection; workgroup or other non-Kerberos scenarios do not satisfy that requirement.
- The connection must be a supported direct RDP session.
- Remote Credential Guard is not supported through an RD Gateway or Connection Broker.
Do not advertise it as protection for every user or every topology. Microsoft’s guidance says helpdesk support scenarios should use Restricted Admin mode rather than Remote Credential Guard. Choose the credential mode after documenting the connection path and the support use case.
Troubleshoot without weakening the design
The Remote Desktop option is missing or cannot be enabled
Recheck the Windows edition. Home is a client-only edition for this purpose; Professional, Enterprise, Education and Windows Server are the listed host-capable editions. Also confirm that you are signed in with administrative rights.
The client reports an NLA or authentication error
Verify the account’s password, confirm that the account is listed in the PC’s Remote Desktop users setting and update the client if it is old. Keep NLA enabled whenever possible. Disabling NLA should be an exceptional, temporary decision made only after determining that the client cannot be updated or replaced and that the resulting risk is acceptable.
The connection works locally but not through the VPN
Check that the VPN client received a route to the host’s internal network, that the host name resolves across the VPN and that the Windows firewall permits the VPN network profile. Test the host’s internal address from the VPN before changing any public-facing rule.
A forwarded connection fails from outside
Verify the router’s destination address, the source-IP allow-list and the host firewall scope. Confirm that the host is powered on and listening on the expected internal address. Do not widen the rule to the entire internet merely to make a test pass; reassess whether a VPN is a better design.
An RD Gateway deployment shows certificate or authorization errors
Check that clients trust the gateway’s certificate, that the certificate is current and that RD CAP and RD RAP policies authorize both the user and the requested resource. If MFA is involved, verify user enrollment, the recovery path and the NPS/identity integration rather than bypassing the second factor.
