Use WhatsApp’s protections together: enable two-step verification, add and verify a recovery email, create a passkey tied to your phone’s screen lock or biometrics, and regularly remove unfamiliar linked devices. Two-step verification and a passkey complement the phone-number registration code; neither makes the registration code safe to share or eliminates the need for access to the account’s phone number and SIM.
What each WhatsApp protection does
WhatsApp account security has several separate layers. Understanding the layers prevents a common mistake: treating a registration code, a two-step verification password, a passkey and a recovery email as interchangeable credentials.

WhatsApp is gradually changing the older six-digit two-step verification PIN into a password. The rollout is not identical for every account, so the wording and fields you see may differ from the examples below.
Before you change any settings
Start from an account that you can currently open. These features are preventive controls: WhatsApp says turning them on cannot restore lost access or remove someone who is already using the account.

- Update WhatsApp. Install the current version offered by your phone’s official app store. A gradual feature rollout can still make labels differ after an update.
- Keep the account’s SIM active. You may need the phone number to register again or receive a verification code. A recovery email is not a replacement for the number or SIM.
- Confirm your device lock works. A passkey relies on the screen lock, fingerprint or face authentication already configured on the phone.
- Use an email address you control. You must be able to open that inbox and complete its verification step. Do not add an address that belongs to someone else or that you rarely access.
- Check for signs of takeover. If messages are being sent without you, your number was unexpectedly signed out, or an unfamiliar session appears, recover the account first. After you regain access, enable the protections and review linked devices.
Set up the protections in the safest order
- Open WhatsApp and confirm that your existing account is working.
- Open Settings (or the platform’s equivalent), then the account-security area.
- Turn on Two-step verification and complete the current password or PIN prompt.
- Add a recovery email and verify it from the message WhatsApp sends.
- Return to the account settings and choose the Passkey option if it is available. Approve the phone’s screen-lock or biometric prompt.
- Open Linked devices, sign out anything unfamiliar, and repeat this check periodically.
Exact button names and placement can vary by Android or iPhone version and by WhatsApp’s rollout. If a label is different, remain in the account settings and follow the in-app explanation rather than choosing a similarly named privacy or chat option.
How to enable two-step verification
Open the account security control
From WhatsApp, open Settings, select Account, and choose Two-step verification or the equivalent security entry shown on your device. The feature is optional, but it adds an account-level check after number registration.
Create the credential WhatsApp offers
Follow the prompt to create the credential. WhatsApp is moving from a six-digit PIN to a password, so an existing account may still display a PIN field while another account displays a password field. Use the exact format requested on your screen and store it somewhere you can retrieve it without sharing it with anyone.

The registration code proves control of the number during registration; the two-step password or PIN is an additional check associated with the WhatsApp account. Keep both private. WhatsApp support, a carrier, a friend or a supposed security agent should not need you to disclose either one.
Complete the confirmation screens
Re-enter the credential when WhatsApp asks you to confirm it. If your account is still using the PIN experience, do not assume that every future screen will use a PIN: WhatsApp’s upgrade is rolling out gradually. When the app presents an upgrade instruction, follow that instruction rather than attempting to force a different format.
Add and verify a recovery email
Enter an address you can access now
During two-step verification setup, WhatsApp may offer to add a recovery email. If you skip it, return to the same two-step verification settings while you are still logged in and look for the email option. Type an address that you personally control and that is protected by its own secure sign-in.

Finish verification
WhatsApp will ask you to verify the address. Open the verification message and complete the action it requests, then return to WhatsApp and confirm that the address is shown as verified. An unverified address does not provide the recovery benefit you are setting up.

A verified email can support login to an existing account and help reset the two-step verification method. For email-code login, WhatsApp says the active SIM containing the account’s phone number must still be in the device. Email therefore provides recovery assistance; it does not turn the account into an email-only account or let you register a number that you no longer control.
Protect the recovery mailbox
Anyone who can take over the mailbox may be able to interfere with account recovery. Use the email provider’s own security controls, keep the address current, and change it in WhatsApp if you lose control of it. Do not forward WhatsApp verification messages or codes.
Create a WhatsApp passkey
Start from a registered, working account
WhatsApp says a passkey can be created after the phone number has been registered and the profile has been set up. You must be able to open the account before you begin; creating a passkey is not a way to reclaim an account that is already inaccessible.
Open the passkey setting
In WhatsApp’s account settings, look for Passkeys or a similarly named entry. The exact path and wording can change with the app version and the platform rollout. Read the in-app description and start the creation flow from there.

Approve the device-security prompt
The phone’s operating system will ask you to authenticate with the security method already enabled on the device: a fingerprint, face recognition or the screen-lock credential. Approve that prompt only on your own phone. WhatsApp describes the passkey as linking the account to this device security system; the official guidance does not require a separate hardware key or accessory.

Confirm that the passkey was saved
Return to WhatsApp’s passkey screen and check that the newly created passkey is listed or that the app reports completion. If the operating-system prompt is cancelled, the passkey has not necessarily been created; start the flow again and complete every confirmation screen.
A passkey is designed to make login faster when two-step verification is enabled. It does not remove the need to keep the phone number, SIM and registration process under your control. If WhatsApp asks for a registration code during a new registration, treat that code as a separate secret.
Review linked devices immediately after setup
Open Linked devices from WhatsApp’s main settings. Read the list of browsers, computers or other sessions and sign out anything you do not recognize. If you use WhatsApp on several of your own devices, identify each one before removing it.
Make this a recurring account-hygiene check, not just a one-time setup task. An unfamiliar linked session is a reason to sign it out, review recent account changes and consider whether your phone number, email account or device lock has been exposed. WhatsApp says it cannot tell you who accessed an account or provide the exact time or location of an access, so do not expect an investigative report from the linked-device screen.
What happens when you sign in again
Registering the phone number
When you register or re-register WhatsApp, the app confirms control of the number with a six-digit registration code normally sent by SMS or phone call. Enter it only into the genuine WhatsApp registration screen. Never read it aloud, copy it into a chat or give it to someone who claims to be helping.
Passing the additional account check
After successful number registration, WhatsApp may request the two-step verification password or PIN. On an account that has completed the PIN-to-password upgrade, the prompt may say password; on another account it may still say PIN. A recovery email can help when you need to reset that two-step method, provided the email was added and verified beforehand.

Using the passkey
Where the passkey option is offered, the device can authenticate you through its screen lock, fingerprint or face system. This can shorten the login process, but it does not authorize another person who merely knows your phone number. Keep the device lock private and do not enroll another person’s biometric profile on a phone used for WhatsApp security.

If you forgot the two-step password or PIN
Use WhatsApp’s current recovery prompt and the verified email associated with the account, if one is available. The recovery screens can change as WhatsApp moves accounts from PINs to passwords, so follow the instructions displayed by your version rather than relying on an older screenshot. Do not guess repeatedly if the app imposes a waiting period, and do not disclose the credential to anyone offering assistance.
If you lost the phone or SIM
Contact your mobile carrier to recover control of the number, then use the normal WhatsApp registration process on a device you control. A recovery email cannot by itself replace the active SIM requirement for email-code login. Once the account is accessible again, create or re-create the passkey on the replacement device and inspect linked devices.
If someone has taken over the account
Prioritize re-registering the phone number and recovering the account. WhatsApp explicitly warns that enabling two-step verification or another feature cannot restore lost access or remove a person who is already using the account. After you regain access, turn on two-step verification, verify the recovery email, create a passkey and sign out every linked session you do not recognize.
If the number previously belonged to someone else
A recycled number can still be associated with the previous owner’s two-step verification. WhatsApp says that, in this specific situation, you may need to wait seven days after registering the number before resetting that two-step method. The seven-day delay applies to the previous-owner scenario; it should not be presented as a universal waiting period for every forgotten password.
Common setup problems and fixes
The menu does not say “PIN”
WhatsApp is upgrading two-step verification from a six-digit PIN to a password. Follow the field and instructions your account displays. Do not assume a guide written for an older release matches your screen.

The passkey option is missing
Confirm that WhatsApp is updated, the number is registered, the profile setup is complete and the phone has a working screen lock or biometric method. Feature availability can vary during a rollout. Recheck the account settings later and use the platform-specific WhatsApp Help Center instructions if the in-app menu still differs.
The biometric prompt fails
Unlock the phone normally, verify that the device’s fingerprint or face setting works outside WhatsApp, and retry the passkey flow. If the device requires the screen-lock credential instead, use that credential. Cancelling the operating-system prompt usually means the passkey creation was not completed.
The recovery email never verifies
Check that the address is spelled correctly, look in spam or filtered folders, and request a fresh verification message from the WhatsApp setting. Complete verification while the account is still open. An address that is merely typed into the field but not verified should not be treated as a working recovery method.
You received an unexpected code
Do not share or enter the code anywhere except the WhatsApp registration screen you intentionally opened. An unsolicited registration code can indicate that someone entered your number into a registration attempt. Keep two-step verification enabled, review linked devices and investigate the security of the phone number and recovery email.
An unknown device appears in Linked devices
Sign out the session immediately. Then confirm that your two-step credential, recovery email and device lock are under your control. If you also see signs of account takeover, recover the account first and repeat the security setup after access is restored.
A practical maintenance checklist
- Keep WhatsApp updated and pay attention to whether your account has moved from a PIN to a password.
- Keep the SIM for the WhatsApp number active and recover it promptly if the phone is lost.
- Use a verified recovery email that you still control.
- Keep a passkey on each device where you intentionally use WhatsApp, using that device’s own screen lock or biometrics.
- Never disclose a registration code, two-step password or PIN.
- Review Linked devices regularly and sign out sessions you cannot identify.
- If access is lost, recover the number and account before attempting to add new protections.
Using two-step verification, a verified recovery email, a passkey and regular linked-device reviews gives WhatsApp several complementary checks: the number-registration code confirms the telephone number, two-step verification adds an account credential, the passkey uses the phone’s local security system, and the email supports recovery without replacing the SIM requirement.
