Reduce the risk of remote takeover by securing router administration and Wi-Fi, separating guest and IoT devices from business systems, installing supported updates, and limiting remote access. These controls reduce exposure; no single setting can guarantee that a router or connected device is safe.

1. Secure the router’s administrator interface

  1. Sign in to the router’s administrator page or management app using the manufacturer’s documented method.
  2. Replace the preset administrator username and password where the router allows it. Use a unique, strong password that is not shared with Wi-Fi users.
  3. Turn off remote management if the business does not need to administer the router from outside its network. The FTC also advises logging out of the administrator account when finished.
  4. Limit administrator access to people who need it, and keep the account logged out when it is not in use.

The FTC summarizes its advice this way: “After you set up a router, change the default username and password, turn off remote management, and log out of the administrator account.” See the FTC’s small-business cybersecurity guidance.

2. Protect Wi-Fi and separate visitors

Enable WPA2 or WPA3 encryption, if supported, and set a strong password for staff Wi-Fi. A changed network name alone is not a meaningful security boundary; prioritize encryption, unique credentials, and separation between groups of devices.

Set up a separate guest or public network for visitors and personal devices, rather than allowing them onto the primary business network. Use a separate network for IoT devices as well when the router or network equipment supports it, particularly if those devices should not reach systems containing sensitive business information.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the existing router cannot provide the encryption or network separation the business needs, consider replacement equipment that can. The FTC’s small-business guidance covers wireless security and keeping guest access separate.

3. Keep router and device software current

Check the router manufacturer’s support page or built-in update mechanism for firmware updates and security patches. Enable automatic updates when the manufacturer offers a secure, supported option. Keep software current on computers and other devices that connect to the business network, too. The FTC’s remote-access guidance for small businesses recommends keeping router software up to date and checking for patches.

Update schedules and support periods differ by manufacturer and model, so follow the relevant product’s documentation rather than relying on a universal timetable. If you cannot establish whether a router still receives updates, contact the manufacturer and factor the answer into a replacement decision.

4. Keep an inventory of IoT devices

Record the connected devices used in the business—for example, cameras, printers, sensors, or other networked equipment—and note who is responsible for each and its business purpose. Review the list when devices are added or removed. Investigate devices that are unfamiliar, no longer needed, or have no clear owner; remove them from the network if they are not needed.

An inventory helps you identify what needs updates and whose access should be restricted. The FTC’s IoT security guidance recommends limiting administrative access, segmenting networks where feasible, and monitoring network activity.

5. Restrict IoT devices’ access to the network

Give administrative permissions only to people who need them. Where the network allows it, keep IoT devices away from systems that hold sensitive business data. Monitor which devices and services are communicating with the network, and investigate activity that does not fit a device’s role.

Some networks and devices support Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD), which can restrict an IoT device’s network communications to what it needs for its intended function. NIST’s SP 1800-15 describes this approach. MUD is an additional control, not a replacement for updates, access restrictions, or network separation, and support depends on the device, router, and related services.

6. Set rules for employee and vendor remote access

Decide who may connect remotely, what systems each person may reach, and what security requirements their devices must meet before access is granted. Give each person only the access needed for their work. Include security requirements in vendor arrangements when a vendor connects to business systems.

A VPN may be one option for remote connections, but using one does not by itself secure the router, remote device, or account. See the FTC’s guidance on securing small-business remote access.

7. Decide when to replace equipment or seek help

Compare routers against practical requirements

When assessing a replacement, verify the exact model’s capabilities and ongoing support with its manufacturer. Check for:

  • WPA2 or WPA3 support.
  • A separate guest or public network.
  • Access-control and segmentation features suited to the business’s devices.
  • A clear, continuing firmware update and support process.

NIST published a cybersecurity profile for consumer-grade router products in September 2024. It is not a ranking of current retail routers or confirmation that a particular model has these features; check the manufacturer’s model-specific documentation.

Get configuration help when the network is hard to manage

Consider help from a qualified IT professional if you cannot determine whether remote management is disabled, configure separate networks, assess vendor access, or monitor devices. Ask for a clear explanation of the settings changed and how updates and access will be maintained. For a business with sensitive systems or many connected devices, ongoing oversight may be more appropriate than a one-time setup.
