Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Secure this stack in layers: keep Nginx and PHP-FPM patched, serve WordPress and phpMyAdmin only over HTTPS, deny executable uploads and hidden files, put an additional authentication or network gate in front of phpMyAdmin and other sensitive paths, rate-limit login endpoints, and maintain encrypted backups that you have actually restored in a test environment. The goal is not one magic directive; it is to make common attack paths unavailable and to detect the attempts that remain.
Apply the changes in staging first. A misplaced rule can break WordPress AJAX, REST clients, cron, reverse-proxy HTTPS detection, or multisite file URLs. Validate the configuration, reload Nginx safely, then review access and error logs.

A typical deployment has four moving parts: Nginx accepts internet traffic, PHP-FPM executes trusted PHP scripts, WordPress stores its files and database credentials, and phpMyAdmin provides a browser-based database administration interface. Each part needs a separate control.
- Nginx: terminates TLS, applies request filtering, and decides which files and locations can be reached.
- PHP-FPM: receives only the PHP requests that should execute. It must not be a way to execute uploaded content.
- WordPress: requires current core, plugins, themes, PHP, and secure administrator sessions.
- phpMyAdmin: is an administrative tool, not a public website. It needs HTTPS, authentication, and network restrictions.
- Recovery and monitoring: backups, integrity records, and logs limit the damage when prevention fails.
WordPress Developer Resources strongly recommends HTTPS to protect logins and visitors. The phpMyAdmin documentation says to serve phpMyAdmin on HTTPS only and preferably enable HSTS to prevent protocol-downgrade attacks. OWASP’s Database Security Cheat Sheet likewise calls for authentication, HTTPS, and network restrictions around web database tools.

Inventory and patch before changing Nginx
Record the running versions and ownership of every component before editing a server block. Include WordPress core, every plugin and theme, PHP and PHP-FPM, Nginx, phpMyAdmin, the operating system, and any reverse proxy or CDN in front of the server. Note which components are still maintained. Remove abandoned plugins, themes, and unused administrative tools rather than trying to compensate with firewall rules.
Use trusted WordPress packages
Install WordPress only from wordpress.org or a distribution process that verifies the official package. Keep a list of enabled plugins and themes, their update source, and the person responsible for reviewing updates. A vulnerable plugin can undo otherwise correct Nginx rules because it may expose a new endpoint or permit unsafe file writes.

Track phpMyAdmin advisories
Monitor phpMyAdmin security announcements and relevant CVEs. Upgrade it as part of a planned maintenance window, then remove installation leftovers such as setup and test directories. Do not leave an old copy at a second URL after deploying a new one.
Build a reviewed Nginx and PHP-FPM baseline
WordPress PHP requests should be passed to PHP-FPM through a Unix socket or a private upstream, not to a PHP interpreter exposed directly on the network. Keep the document root limited to the site files and use a dedicated service account with only the permissions it needs.
Example server structure
The following is a starting pattern, not a drop-in replacement for every distribution. Replace the domain, document-root path, certificate paths, and PHP-FPM socket with values from your system, and review it with your operations team.
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.com www.example.com;
return 301 https://$host$request_uri;
}
server {
listen 443 ssl http2;
server_name example.com www.example.com;
root /var/www/example.com;
index index.php index.html;
ssl_certificate /etc/ssl/example/fullchain.pem;
ssl_certificate_key /etc/ssl/example/privkey.pem;
location / {
try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?$args;
}
location ~ .php$ {
try_files $uri =404;
include fastcgi_params;
fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name;
fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/php-fpm.sock;
}
}
try_files $uri =404; prevents Nginx from sending a nonexistent path to PHP-FPM. On your distribution the socket may include a PHP version, so confirm the actual path instead of copying the example unchanged.

Deny hidden and auxiliary files
Dotfiles often contain credentials, deployment metadata, or version-control data. Deny them unless a specific public file is intentionally required.
location ~ (^|/). { deny all; }
Also review access to backup archives, editor swap files, environment files, and other administrative artifacts. Keep detailed error output out of production responses; diagnostics belong in protected logs.
Prevent PHP execution in uploads and multisite files
WordPress uploads are writable by the application and may contain attacker-controlled names or content. A successful upload must never become a PHP program. Explicitly deny requests for PHP files beneath wp-content/uploads. For multisite, apply the equivalent protection to the network’s files path as well.
location ~* ^/wp-content/uploads/.*.php$ {
deny all;
}
location ~* ^/wp-content/blogs.dir/.*.php$ {
deny all;
}
Multisite layouts differ, so inspect the actual URL paths and add a rule for the path used by your installation. Test with a harmless file name ending in .php; Nginx should return a denial and PHP-FPM should never receive the request. Do not solve this by making the entire uploads directory executable or writable by the web server beyond what WordPress requires.
Install TLS before forcing HTTPS
Obtain a valid certificate for every hostname users will visit, including the administrative hostname used for phpMyAdmin. Serve both applications on HTTPS, then redirect HTTP requests to HTTPS. Check redirects, cookies, images, REST responses, cron callbacks, and any reverse proxy before enabling HSTS.
HSTS timing and scope
HSTS tells browsers to use HTTPS automatically. Enable it only after every intended hostname and subdomain is HTTPS-ready; an overlooked subdomain can become unreachable for users once a long-lived policy is cached. Start with a carefully reviewed policy and expand its scope only when you understand the effect on all subdomains.

Force encrypted WordPress administration
WordPress supports this setting in wp-config.php:
define( 'FORCE_SSL_ADMIN', true );
Place it before the line that says WordPress has stopped editing. If TLS terminates at a load balancer or reverse proxy, configure that proxy to pass the original HTTPS state and configure WordPress to recognize it; otherwise the site can loop between HTTP and HTTPS or generate mixed-content URLs. Confirm that administrator login, the dashboard, media uploads, AJAX requests, REST API calls, and scheduled jobs still work after the change.
Lock down phpMyAdmin as an administrative service
phpMyAdmin should not be treated as another public WordPress page. Give it a dedicated hostname or tightly controlled location, and expose it only through HTTPS. Prefer a private management network or VPN; if that is not possible, combine network restrictions with a second authentication layer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Remove installation surfaces
- Delete the phpMyAdmin
setupdirectory after configuration. - Remove test directories and sample files.
- Deny direct web access to auxiliary
libraries/andtemplates/files unless the packaged configuration explicitly requires them. - Disable
display_errorsin production so paths, SQL details, and stack traces are not returned to browsers.
Use cookie authentication
Use phpMyAdmin’s cookie authentication mode instead of storing database credentials in a readable configuration file. Protect the cookie encryption secret with appropriate file permissions and rotate it when administrators or hosts change. Database accounts used through phpMyAdmin should have only the privileges needed for their job; avoid using a server-wide superuser for routine editing.
Add Nginx and network controls
Put Basic Authentication, an IP allowlist, or an equivalent private-network control in front of the phpMyAdmin location. Basic Authentication is an additional gate, not a replacement for phpMyAdmin’s own login and HTTPS. An allowlist is effective only when administrator source addresses are stable; document the emergency access process before deploying it.
location /phpmyadmin/ {
auth_basic "Restricted administration";
auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd;
allow 192.0.2.0/24;
deny all;
try_files $uri $uri/ =404;
}
The order and exact behavior of nested locations vary with the rest of your server block. Test both an allowed management address and a denied address, and ensure that static assets and login POST requests still reach phpMyAdmin. Never publish the setup interface merely to make installation easier.
Protect WordPress administration without breaking required requests
A second gate can protect /wp-admin/, but a blanket password prompt can break legitimate background requests. In particular, WordPress uses /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php for many front-end and back-end features. Before applying Basic Authentication or an IP allowlist to the entire directory, identify the AJAX, REST, webhook, and integration paths your site needs.

Choose the narrowest useful boundary
- Protect the interactive dashboard and login path for a known administrator network when feasible.
- Leave a required AJAX or webhook endpoint reachable, then protect it with application authentication, signed requests, or a narrowly scoped network rule.
- For agencies or distributed teams, use an identity-aware gateway or VPN rather than maintaining a fragile list of home addresses.
After every change, test a normal administrator login, media upload, editor autosave, admin-ajax.php action, REST client, and scheduled task. Record which paths are intentionally exempt so a later “tightening” change does not silently disable them.
Rate-limit brute-force endpoints
wp-login.php and xmlrpc.php attract automated password guessing and request floods. Nginx’s request-limiting module can slow repeated requests before PHP-FPM spends resources on them.
http {
limit_req_zone $binary_remote_addr zone=wp_login:10m rate=1r/s;
server {
location = /wp-login.php {
limit_req zone=wp_login burst=5;
include fastcgi_params;
fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name;
fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php/php-fpm.sock;
}
}
}
The rate and burst in this example are starting values, not universal settings. Tune them against legitimate logins, shared office NAT addresses, mobile users, and automated maintenance. A limit that is too strict can lock out a whole office or prevent a deployment. Apply an equivalent, separately evaluated rule to xmlrpc.php; disabling XML-RPC outright is safe only when no Jetpack-like integration, mobile client, pingback workflow, or other required caller depends on it.
Add pattern detection when appropriate
A web application firewall can identify attack patterns that simple path limits do not. ModSecurity with the OWASP Core Rule Set (CRS) is one option. Run new rules in detection or logging mode first, review false positives, and create narrow exclusions for known WordPress requests rather than disabling an entire rule group.
Reduce information exposure and watch the logs
Return generic production errors and keep detailed diagnostics in files readable only by administrators. Do not reveal Nginx, PHP, WordPress, or phpMyAdmin version strings unless an operational requirement justifies them. Remove unused status pages, test files, and alternate copies of the application.
What to monitor
- Repeated failed logins or bursts of requests to
wp-login.phpandxmlrpc.php. - Denied requests for dotfiles, upload PHP files, phpMyAdmin setup paths, and auxiliary libraries.
- Unexpected POST volume, unusual user agents, and new administrator accounts.
- PHP-FPM errors, worker exhaustion, and Nginx upstream failures after a configuration change.
Forward access and error logs to a system with restricted access and a retention policy. Alerts should include the hostname, path, source address, status code, and time window so an operator can distinguish a scanner from a broken integration.

Back up files and databases for recovery
Take regular snapshots of WordPress files and the MySQL database. Keep copies independently of the production host, encrypt them in transit and at rest, and retain hashes or another integrity record so you can detect tampering or corruption. A backup that lives only on the same server is not an independent recovery copy.
Document a restore exercise
- Restore the database and files into a non-production environment.
- Verify that the restored site uses the expected WordPress URL and does not send email or webhooks to real users.
- Check administrator login, media, plugins, themes, scheduled tasks, and database consistency.
- Record the elapsed time, missing prerequisites, and any manual steps needed to repeat the recovery.
The cited guidance requires backup protection and integrity controls but does not establish a universal restore frequency. Set a schedule based on how much data your site can afford to lose, and revisit it after major architecture or compliance changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsApply changes safely
- Stage the change: reproduce the Nginx server block and PHP-FPM connection in a non-production environment.
- Check syntax: run
nginx -tand stop if it reports an include, brace, certificate, or permission error. - Reload, do not restart blindly: use your operating system’s supported reload command so existing connections can drain safely.
- Test externally: verify HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect behavior, certificate coverage, WordPress login, AJAX, REST, cron, uploads, and phpMyAdmin from both an allowed and a denied network.
- Inspect logs: look for 401, 403, 404, 429, upstream errors, redirect loops, and unexpected PHP-FPM traffic.
- Keep a rollback: preserve the last known-good configuration and know how to restore it through console or out-of-band access if the web service becomes unreachable.
Security controls to compare when choosing a deployment
If you are selecting a host, reverse proxy, or managed platform, compare the capabilities rather than relying on a generic “WordPress optimized” label.
| Control | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| HTTPS and HSTS | Can you install certificates for every hostname, redirect HTTP, and control HSTS scope? | Protects credentials and sessions and prevents downgrade attacks. |
| Network and authentication gates | Are IP allowlists, private networking, VPN access, and Basic Authentication available for phpMyAdmin and admin paths? | Reduces exposure of administrative interfaces. |
| Rate limits and WAF | Can you set per-path limits and tune WAF or OWASP CRS rules? | Slows brute force and detects broader request patterns. |
| Version control | Can you choose supported Nginx and PHP-FPM versions and receive update notices? | Lets you patch predictable, supported components. |
| Backups | Are files and databases encrypted, independently stored, hash-checked, and restorable? | Provides a trustworthy recovery path after compromise or loss. |
| Logging and alerts | Can you retain access and error logs and alert on authentication failures and blocked paths? | Makes attacks and broken rules visible. |
Common failure modes and fixes
HTTPS redirect loop
Usually the outer proxy terminates TLS but does not pass the original HTTPS state to Nginx or WordPress. Correct the forwarded-protocol handling, then clear cached redirects and retest from an external client.
AJAX or editor actions return 401 or 403
A directory-wide authentication rule is catching admin-ajax.php or another required endpoint. Review the request in the access log, narrow the protected location, and add an application-level control for the integration instead of removing all protection.
Legitimate users receive 429 responses
The rate limit is too low for a shared address, a password manager retrying, or a deployment script. Increase the burst or create a narrowly scoped exception after confirming the source, and continue to monitor it.
Uploaded media returns 403
Check that the deny rule targets only PHP under uploads and that ordinary image, document, and thumbnail extensions are not matched. Confirm filesystem ownership and permissions separately from Nginx execution rules.
phpMyAdmin loads but cannot authenticate
Verify cookie-authentication settings, the secret’s permissions, database connectivity, and the proxy’s forwarded host and HTTPS headers. Test from an allowed network and inspect the phpMyAdmin and Nginx logs without enabling public error display.
Quick Recap
Final deployment checklist
- All WordPress, plugin, theme, PHP, Nginx, and phpMyAdmin versions are inventoried and supported.
- Unused components, phpMyAdmin setup and test directories, and auxiliary files are removed.
- HTTP redirects to HTTPS, certificates cover every intended hostname, and HSTS is enabled only after readiness is verified.
FORCE_SSL_ADMINis enabled and reverse-proxy HTTPS detection is correct.- Dotfiles and unnecessary backup or metadata files are denied.
- PHP under WordPress uploads and multisite files paths cannot execute.
- phpMyAdmin uses cookie authentication plus HTTPS and a network or authentication gate.
- Admin-path controls preserve required AJAX, REST, webhook, and cron workflows.
wp-login.phpandxmlrpc.phpare rate-limited, with WAF rules considered for broader patterns.- Logs and alerts cover failed authentication and blocked paths.
- Encrypted, independent backups have integrity records and a documented non-production restore test.
nginx -t, external HTTPS checks, WordPress workflows, and phpMyAdmin access tests pass after the reload.
