Secure an internet-reachable GPU server by separating the public workload from administration, removing every unnecessary exposure, and putting the remaining service behind narrowly scoped controls. Keep the baseboard management controller (BMC), Kubernetes control plane, and other management interfaces on private networks; use a VPN or hardened bastion for approved remote access; patch supported software; require strong administrator authentication; and continuously verify what the internet can reach. This order follows CISA’s exposure-reduction guidance and the management-network recommendations in NVIDIA’s DGX H100/H200 security documentation.

Start with two separate security questions

A GPU server can legitimately provide a public inference API, notebook gateway, model-download service, rendering endpoint, or game workload. That does not mean its administration interfaces should be public. Treat these as two different designs:

  • Workload access: the smallest set of application protocols and source networks that customers or users need.
  • Administrative access: SSH or remote console access, the BMC, cloud control interfaces, Kubernetes administration, monitoring, and update systems. These should normally use private connectivity.

A routable address is not a requirement to expose every listener on the host. CISA warns that organizations often leave common weaknesses reachable without realizing it and recommends identifying internet-accessible assets, deciding which must remain exposed, restricting the rest, and reassessing them routinely (Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance).

1. Build an accurate exposure inventory

Do not start by changing firewall rules at random. First establish what is reachable, through which path, and who owns it. Inventory the server itself and every control that can publish it: public IP addresses, DNS records, cloud security groups, network ACLs, load balancers, host firewalls, container ingress, Kubernetes services, and out-of-band interfaces.

Record each reachable asset

Inventory item Questions to answer Evidence to retain
Public addresses and names Which IPv4/IPv6 addresses and DNS names resolve to the server or its load balancer? Cloud inventory, DNS records, and an authorized external observation
Listening services Which application, SSH, API, telemetry, database, and debugging listeners are active? Host/service inventory and an approved scan result
Network policy Which security-group, ACL, router, and host-firewall rules allow inbound or outbound traffic? Versioned policy exports and rule owners
Container and cluster paths Which ingress objects, load balancers, NodePorts, and host-network workloads publish a port? Cluster configuration and deployment ownership
Management planes Can the BMC, hypervisor console, Kubernetes API, kubelet API, etcd, or monitoring UI be reached from an untrusted network? Network diagrams, routing tables, and access logs
Outbound paths Can a compromised workload reach cloud metadata, internal control systems, or unrestricted internet destinations? Egress rules, proxy policy, and flow logs

Reconcile your approved records with an external view. CISA lists Censys, Shodan, Thingful, and Shadowserver as examples of web-based asset-discovery services; use any such service only for systems you own or are authorized to assess, and do not treat inclusion in CISA’s list as an endorsement (CISA guidance). An unexpected result is an incident for investigation, not permission to probe someone else’s infrastructure.

Map the path, not just the port

A service may be reachable through several layers: a public load balancer can forward to a private node, while a cloud rule or a host rule can separately expose the same node. Draw the path from the internet to the process and identify every enforcement point. Include IPv6, alternate DNS names, temporary troubleshooting rules, and provider-managed interfaces; overlooking one path can invalidate an otherwise careful hardening change.

2. Decide what genuinely needs to stay public

For every internet-reachable item, record an owner, business purpose, required source networks, protocol, and expected lifetime. Classify it before changing access:

Classification Typical treatment Decision test
Public workload endpoint Keep only the application path, with narrow ingress and application authentication. Would the intended user-facing function stop if this endpoint became private?
Private administrative interface Remove the public route and allow access through a VPN or hardened bastion. Can administrators perform the task over a controlled private path?
Internal dependency Allow only the specific systems and protocols that require it. Is there a documented caller and owner?
Unused or uncertain listener Disable it, close its route, or quarantine it pending ownership confirmation. Is there a current operational need and an accountable owner?

Review dependencies before closing a route. A model-serving process may depend on an internal artifact store, identity provider, or telemetry collector; removing that path without a replacement can interrupt the workload. The goal is not to make the GPU unreachable. It is to eliminate exposure that has no operational justification, then reassess the result, which is the sequence CISA describes (CISA Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance).

3. Put the BMC and management plane on private networks

The BMC provides power control, console access, firmware functions, and hardware telemetry. Compromise of it can bypass operating-system controls, so it belongs on a protected management network rather than the public interface. For DGX H100/H200 systems, NVIDIA explicitly recommends connecting the BMC to a dedicated management network with firewall protection (DGX H100/H200 Security).

Recommended access pattern

  1. Connect the BMC to a dedicated management VLAN, subnet, or physically separate network where practical.
  2. Block direct inbound access from the public internet at the provider edge and the local firewall.
  3. Permit management traffic only from approved administrator networks, a VPN concentrator, or a hardened bastion.
  4. Require individual administrator identities, strong authentication, and logging on the VPN, bastion, and BMC.
  5. Restrict BMC outbound traffic as well; it should not have unrestricted internet access merely because it has a management address.
  6. Test both the intended private path and the rejected public path, then retain the rule and test evidence.

NVIDIA’s AI-cloud requirements similarly call for blocking direct public access and using a hardened bastion for approved access (NVIDIA Requirements for AI Clouds v2.4). Apply those model-specific documents to the hardware they cover; other vendors’ BMC implementations may have different controls, firmware, and terminology.

Keep other control interfaces private

Use the same principle for hypervisor consoles, storage controllers, switch management, cluster dashboards, CI/CD administration, and internal monitoring. A public application load balancer can forward to a private GPU node; it does not require the node’s administrative address to be public. If an emergency-access design requires an exception, make it time-limited, source-restricted, approved, and monitored rather than permanent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Filter the intentionally public service path

After management access is private, design the public path around the application’s actual contract. Allow only the protocols and destinations the service needs at each layer: edge firewall or security group, load balancer, host firewall, container ingress, and application authorization.

Use a narrow ingress policy

  • Expose the documented application endpoint, not administrative APIs, debug consoles, databases, or telemetry interfaces.
  • Restrict source networks when the service is for known customers, corporate ranges, or a private partner network.
  • Terminate and validate transport encryption at an appropriate edge, then protect the internal hop according to the workload’s sensitivity.
  • Apply request authentication, authorization, rate limits, payload limits, and abuse controls in the application or gateway.
  • Use separate rules for public traffic and administrator traffic so an application rule cannot accidentally grant shell or control-plane access.
  • Remove temporary “allow all” rules after troubleshooting and attach an owner and expiration to exceptions.

NVIDIA’s AI-cloud requirements describe private-by-default access, restricted API endpoints, and filtering through security groups or ACLs (NVIDIA Requirements for AI Clouds v2.4). The cited guidance does not establish a universal GPU-server port list. Ports and protocols must come from the specific application, deployment, and support documentation; copying a generic GPU port table can expose services that your server does not need.

Control egress as well as ingress

A compromised model-serving process can be used to scan internal networks, steal credentials from cloud metadata services, or exfiltrate data. Permit outbound destinations by function where feasible: package repositories through a proxy, approved object-storage endpoints, identity services, and required telemetry. Deny unnecessary access to internal address ranges and metadata endpoints, and alert on new destinations or unusual transfer volumes.

5. Harden the host, identities, and patch process

Use supported software and a repeatable update path

  • Keep the operating system, GPU driver, CUDA-dependent components, container runtime, web server, and application on supported versions.
  • Prioritize fixes for components reachable from the internet and for vulnerabilities that can cross a privilege boundary.
  • Retire unsupported operating systems, drivers, firmware, and third-party agents instead of assuming a firewall compensates for them.
  • Test driver and CUDA changes against the workload in a staging environment, then record the exact versions deployed.
  • Have a rollback or reimage plan before patching production nodes; preserve workload data and configuration separately from the host.

CISA’s exposure-reduction guidance specifically recommends applying security patches, using jump hosts, enabling MFA where possible, monitoring traffic, and reviewing exposure repeatedly (CISA guidance).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Strengthen administrator access

  • Replace default BMC, operating-system, cloud, and cluster credentials before placing the system in service.
  • Give each administrator a distinct identity; avoid shared root or shared console accounts.
  • Use least privilege and separate routine administration from emergency break-glass access.
  • Require multi-factor authentication at the identity provider, VPN, bastion, and cloud or cluster control plane where supported.
  • Record successful and failed logins, privilege changes, key creation, BMC actions, and configuration changes centrally.
  • Rotate credentials and revoke keys promptly when personnel, vendors, or automation no longer need access.

A hardware security key can be an MFA authenticator when the identity provider and access path support it. It does not replace network isolation, patching, authorization, or monitoring; compatibility must be confirmed for the actual VPN, bastion, and identity system.

Reduce host attack surface

Disable services and packages that the workload does not require, prevent direct root login where the platform supports a safer administrative model, restrict local privilege escalation, and protect secrets from appearing in images, logs, command histories, or world-readable files. Keep host and container logs available after a compromise by forwarding them to a separate system.

6. Apply Kubernetes and container safeguards when they are part of the deployment

Kubernetes adds several management and workload paths that must be treated separately from the GPU application. The upstream Kubernetes Security Checklist states that the API server, kubelet API, and etcd should not be publicly exposed. It also recommends network policies, filtering workload access to cloud metadata services, and a security design suited to the environment.

Protect the control plane

  • Keep the Kubernetes API server reachable only from approved administrator, automation, and node networks.
  • Do not publish kubelet APIs or etcd to the internet; place them on private control-plane or node networks.
  • Limit who can create, update, or exec into workloads, especially workloads that request GPUs, host networking, host devices, or elevated privileges.
  • Use short-lived credentials and audit authorization decisions, workload changes, and interactive sessions.

Constrain pod-to-pod and pod-to-cloud traffic

  • Apply ingress and egress NetworkPolicies that express which namespaces, services, and external destinations may communicate.
  • Block access to cloud instance metadata endpoints unless a workload explicitly requires it; use the platform’s documented metadata-protection mechanism.
  • Review hostPath mounts, hostPID, hostNetwork, privileged containers, added Linux capabilities, and device access. A pod with excessive host access can expose host files, credentials, or the GPU node itself.
  • Use pod security controls appropriate to the workload and admission policies that prevent unsafe defaults.
  • Set CPU, memory, ephemeral-storage, and GPU-related resource requests and limits where appropriate to reduce denial-of-service risk. Consider performance effects before imposing CPU limits on latency-sensitive workloads.

For worker nodes, CISA’s cloud-infrastructure guidance recommends private subnets unless internet access is explicitly required and minimizing direct node access. It also warns that unsafe hostPath mounts can expose host files and secrets when pods have excessive privileges (Security Guidance for 5G Cloud Infrastructures, Part IV).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expose only the workload ingress

Use an ingress controller or load balancer for the public application and keep the API server, kubelet, etcd, dashboards, and node addresses private. Check for accidental exposure through NodePort, host networking, cloud load-balancer annotations, and debug services. A deployment review should include the rendered manifests and the provider’s resulting network rules, not just the source YAML.

7. Treat GPU-specific security features as platform-dependent

Network isolation and administrative hardening apply broadly, but GPU firmware, drivers, confidential-computing modes, attestation, and multi-tenant isolation do not have one universal setting. NVIDIA’s Secure AI Operations Guide notes that functionality and support depend on the hardware platform, driver, and firmware versions.

Before enabling a GPU security feature, verify all of the following in the current vendor compatibility material:

  • Exact GPU model, server platform, firmware, and driver versions.
  • Whether the operating system, hypervisor, container runtime, and orchestration integration are supported.
  • Whether the workload needs features that conflict with the protection, such as direct device access, peer-to-peer communication, or particular virtualization modes.
  • How keys, attestation evidence, firmware updates, recovery, and tenant separation are administered.
  • What performance, availability, and observability changes the mode introduces.

Do not infer that a feature is available merely because another GPU generation or driver branch supports it. NVIDIA’s DGX H100/H200 BMC advice is model-specific; follow the equivalent documentation for other hardware rather than copying a DGX configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Monitor, test, and recheck the exposed surface

Monitor the signals that reveal a change

  • Collect edge, load-balancer, host, BMC, VPN, bastion, Kubernetes audit, container-runtime, and application logs in a protected central system.
  • Alert on new listening services, new public routes, security-group or ACL changes, unexpected BMC logins, privilege escalation, and Kubernetes role or workload changes.
  • Review inbound and outbound flow data for scanning, repeated authentication failures, unusual geographies, command-and-control patterns, and unexpected data volume.
  • Track patch and firmware status against the approved inventory, including GPU driver and container-runtime versions.

Verify after every infrastructure change

  1. Update the approved inventory and change record before or during the deployment.
  2. Check the resulting cloud rules, routes, load-balancer listeners, host firewall, ingress objects, and BMC network settings.
  3. Perform an authorized external exposure check for all public addresses and names, including IPv6.
  4. Test the intended user workflow from an allowed network and confirm that administrative and control-plane paths remain unreachable from the public side.
  5. Review logs for denied traffic, unexpected callers, and application errors caused by the change.
  6. Remove temporary exceptions and document the owner and expiry of any remaining exception.

CISA calls for traffic monitoring and routine exposure assessments, while Kubernetes cautions that a checklist is only a baseline rather than a complete security program (CISA; Kubernetes Security Checklist). Set the review interval according to how quickly the environment changes and its risk; the cited sources do not prescribe one universal schedule.

Reference architecture for a public GPU workload

A defensible design commonly has four zones:

Zone Allowed function What should not be there
Internet edge Public DNS, load balancer or gateway, TLS termination, request filtering, and rate controls. BMC, SSH, Kubernetes API, kubelet, etcd, databases, or debug consoles
Workload network GPU service nodes and only the internal dependencies required by the application. Unrestricted lateral access or broad inbound administrator rules
Management network VPN, bastion, BMC, hypervisor and infrastructure administration, with centralized logs. Direct public routes or shared public application ingress
Data and services Private artifact stores, identity, telemetry, backups, and approved egress proxies. Unfiltered access from arbitrary pods or internet clients

This is a pattern, not a vendor-specific topology. Validate the routing, trust boundaries, and controls against the actual cloud, bare-metal, or colocation design.

What to do if you discover unexpected exposure

  1. Contain: remove the public route or apply a temporary source restriction while preserving evidence and the required workload path.
  2. Identify: determine the process, owner, change that created the exposure, and whether credentials or management interfaces were reachable.
  3. Protect credentials: revoke exposed keys, rotate passwords and tokens, and invalidate sessions as the identity system permits.
  4. Patch or rebuild: bring supported software and firmware current; reimage a host when integrity cannot be established.
  5. Review logs: examine edge, host, BMC, cloud, Kubernetes, and application records for unauthorized access or data movement.
  6. Restore deliberately: re-enable only the documented service path, test it externally, and add a control that prevents the same route from returning unnoticed.

If the BMC or control plane was exposed, treat the event as more serious than an ordinary application-port mistake because those interfaces can control the host or the cluster. Escalate according to your incident-response plan and preserve relevant logs before rotating or rebuilding systems.

Security review checklist

  • Every public IP, DNS name, listener, load-balancer rule, ingress object, and BMC route has an owner and purpose.
  • Unused services and public routes are disabled, not merely undocumented.
  • BMC, hypervisor, Kubernetes API, kubelet, etcd, and other management interfaces are private.
  • Remote administration uses a controlled VPN or hardened bastion with individual identities, MFA where supported, least privilege, and logs.
  • Public ingress is limited to required application traffic; administrator and telemetry paths are separate.
  • Egress rules limit access to metadata services, internal networks, and unapproved destinations.
  • Supported operating systems, GPU drivers, container runtimes, applications, and firmware receive timely updates.
  • Kubernetes authorization, NetworkPolicies, pod security, resource controls, and risky host mounts are reviewed when applicable.
  • GPU-specific security features are enabled only after confirming exact hardware, driver, and firmware support.
  • External exposure checks, flow monitoring, audit-log review, and change verification are part of normal operations.
