You cannot make a blockchain’s transaction signatures post-quantum by buying a hardware wallet, changing your seed phrase, or moving funds to a new wallet. Future quantum computers could threaten some public-key cryptography used by transaction-signature systems, but when—or whether—a machine capable of doing so will arrive is unknown. For now, protect your wallet against current theft and loss risks, and look for documented migration support from both the blockchain and your wallet provider before acting on quantum claims.
What does a quantum threat to a crypto wallet mean?
Many widely used cryptographic systems rely on mathematical problems that are difficult for classical computers to solve. A sufficiently capable quantum computer could threaten some of those systems, including public-key cryptography used in digital signatures. Because signatures help authorize blockchain transactions, a future cryptographic break could become a network-level security issue.
That is different from someone stealing a device, tricking you into revealing a recovery phrase, or obtaining access through malware. Those are present-day custody and account-security risks; a quantum-capable computer is a potential future threat to cryptographic systems. The practical response is different, too: better custody habits help reduce theft and loss, while post-quantum transaction security depends on changes supported by the blockchain and the software and devices used to sign transactions.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen could quantum computers threaten current cryptography?
The timing is not known. NIST’s 2024 overview describes expert estimates ranging from a few years to a few decades for quantum computers capable of threatening current cryptography, while emphasizing that the arrival date has not been established. That range is not a prediction for any particular blockchain or wallet.

- Tap once to manage your entire crypto wallet across 90 blockchains - no USB cables or Bluetooth, no batteries, no setup. Access 14,100+ coins & tokens, DeFi, NFTs, and staking instantly from your phone
- Smart backup: Use your second Tangem Wallet as your Backup keys with end‑to‑end encryption; no more papers, pictures. If one card is lost, the remaining can still restore full access, with an optional seed phrase available for advanced users.
- Engineered to last up to 25 years: Waterproof (IP69K), shockproof and tested for extreme temperatures from −25°C to 50°C. A durable cold wallet with long‑term protection and independently audited security.
- Trusted by 6 million users worldwide - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
NIST also says integrating newly standardized algorithms into deployed systems can take 10 to 20 years. That is general transition context—not a crypto-wallet deadline or a forecast for a specific network. NIST released its first three finalized post-quantum cryptography standards in 2024 and advises organizations to begin transition work rather than wait for a future machine.
Are hardware wallets or seed phrases quantum-proof?
No. These tools address different parts of wallet security and recovery; neither changes the blockchain’s transaction-signature scheme.

| Measure | What it helps with | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware wallet | A device-based way to custody and use keys. The SEC advises considering convenience and security needs when choosing a wallet type. | That the device or the blockchain’s transaction signatures are post-quantum. |
| Seed phrase or recovery phrase | Restoring access when a private key, device, or software is lost, damaged, or corrupted, as described by the SEC. | That the recovered wallet uses a post-quantum signature scheme. |
| Post-quantum migration | Changing cryptographic support across the relevant blockchain protocol and compatible wallet software and signing devices. | Protection merely from holding keys offline or generating a new recovery phrase. |
A provider’s “quantum-proof” label, cold-storage claim, or secure-element description is not enough to establish post-quantum transaction security. Look for technical documentation explaining support for the relevant chain’s signature changes.

- Functions: with these steel crypto wallets you can record information such as fieldworks passphrase in tandem with the BIP39 word list, and they are also compatible with 12 or 24-word seed in most languages, suitable to store your private cryptocurrency information or for many instances where you may need a private cold storage system
- Suitable size: the cold wallet backups are compatible with BIP39 wallets, can work with most hardware wallets, supports up to 24 mnemonics seed phrases, convenient for you to use in coordination with other crypto seed storage devices and wallets
- Multiple ways of locking: you can use the matching screws to lock up the steel bitcoin wallets; You can also lock them up and hide them in other places if you still feel unsafe; The hole on the bitcoin wallet measures 6 mm/ 0.24 inch in diameter, suitable for hanging
Reduce present-day custody risks
- Keep your recovery phrase private and secure. Never share it in response to a message, support request, or unsolicited instruction.
- Maintain access to official wallet and blockchain instructions so you can recover access or assess a genuine software or network update.
- Choose a custody setup based on your security needs, convenience, and ability to manage recovery—not on an unsupported promise of quantum resistance.
Assess future migration support
- Identify the blockchain network used by the assets you hold and check its official technical documentation for a post-quantum transaction-signature proposal, decision, or migration plan.
- Check whether your wallet provider documents support for that network’s proposed or adopted changes, including any required software or firmware updates.
- Follow migration instructions only when they are published through official network and wallet channels. Confirm that the instructions apply to your chain and wallet before authorizing a transaction.
NIST’s National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence describes broader migration planning as identifying quantum-vulnerable algorithms across hardware, software, and services, then prioritizing replacements. That is useful context for why a transition requires coordination, but it is not a consumer instruction to transfer assets or a wallet-specific migration procedure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you judge a wallet’s quantum-readiness claim?
Read the claim as a technical support question, not a marketing category. A credible assessment needs evidence about the blockchain, the wallet, and the signing device working together.
