To secure bitcoin, protect the information that can recreate its private keys. For most modern wallets, that means writing the recovery (seed) phrase on an offline, durable medium, keeping more than one copy in separate secure locations, and following the wallet maker’s exact restoration procedure. Treat the phrase as equivalent to the funds: anyone who gets it may be able to spend the bitcoin, while losing it can make self-custodied funds permanently inaccessible.
A hardware wallet can keep signing keys offline, but it does not replace a backup. The safest setup matches your spending needs, tests recovery before an emergency, and includes a plan for illness, death, theft, fire, device failure, and accidental disclosure.
What “securing bitcoin” actually means
Bitcoin ownership is controlled by private keys. A wallet is software or a device that manages those keys and creates transactions; the coins are recorded on the Bitcoin network, not stored inside the phone, computer, or hardware wallet itself. A backup preserves a way to recreate the keys when the original wallet is lost, damaged, erased, or replaced.

Transactions generally cannot be reversed by a central authority.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Security therefore has two opposing requirements:
- Availability: you must be able to retrieve and use the recovery information when the wallet or device fails.
- Confidentiality: nobody else should be able to read or copy it.
A backup that is secret but destroyed is useless; a backup that survives but is photographed, uploaded, or stolen can give an attacker control.
Recovery phrases, private keys, and passphrases
What a seed or recovery phrase does
A recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase or mnemonic, is an ordered sequence of words from which a wallet can restore its key set. Bitcoin.org defines it as a backup for restoring a wallet, and explicitly warns that anyone who obtains it may access the corresponding bitcoin. Write every word in the exact order and preserve the wallet’s spelling and language.
Most modern wallets are deterministic. Bitcoin.org’s wallet-security guidance says a single recovery-phrase backup is sufficient to restore all past and future addresses in most modern deterministic wallets. “Most” matters: wallet design, account type, derivation path, imported keys, multisignature settings, and optional passphrases can change what is recoverable. Never assume that a phrase from one wallet will automatically reproduce every account in another.
BIP 39 word counts
The Bitcoin Developer Documentation describes BIP 39 as one common mnemonic standard. It converts 128 to 256 bits of entropy into a mnemonic and then into a 512-bit root seed. The specification’s entropy-to-word mapping is:

BIP 39 is a standard, not a guarantee that every wallet supports every feature. The Bitcoin.org-hosted BIP 39 page is a mirror; implementation details should be checked in the canonical BIP repository and the documentation for your wallet.
An additional passphrase is separate secret information
Some wallets let you add an optional passphrase to the mnemonic. It creates a different wallet, so a correct seed phrase with a wrong passphrase can appear to produce an empty wallet. Record the existence of an additional passphrase in your estate and recovery plan, but do not store it next to the phrase in a way that lets a finder immediately spend the funds. If you forget it, there may be no recovery route.

| Arrangement | Online exposure | Everyday convenience | Backup and recovery considerations | Key control |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hot wallet | Keys are managed on an internet-connected phone or computer | High; suitable for routine spending | Protect the device, wallet password, and recovery phrase; malware and phishing are important risks | You control the keys when it is self-custodied |
| Cold wallet | Keys are kept offline when not signing | Lower; moving funds requires extra steps | Device loss still requires a separate, protected recovery backup | You control the keys when it is self-custodied |
| Hardware wallet | Signing keys remain in a dedicated offline-oriented device | Moderate; transactions require connecting and confirming on the device | Keep the recovery phrase independent of the device; verify the manufacturer’s restoration process | Usually self-custody, subject to the device and setup |
| Multisignature wallet | Can distribute signing authority across devices or locations | Lower; multiple approvals and coordination are required | Document every signer, key, wallet policy, and recovery path; complexity is substantially higher | Shared among the designated signers |
Bitcoin.org’s FAQ describes a practical combination: a hot wallet for small, frequent spending and cold storage for savings. A hardware wallet reduces exposure to an internet-connected computer, but an attacker who obtains its recovery phrase can still recreate the wallet elsewhere. Multisignature can reduce dependence on one device or location by requiring multiple independent approvals, but the setup and recovery instructions must be maintained carefully.

How to make a reliable wallet backup
Use the following process for a new wallet or when reviewing an existing one. Labels, menu names, and recovery formats differ, so use the current instructions from your wallet provider rather than copying a procedure from another wallet.
- Identify the wallet and account type. Record the wallet name, version, operating system, account type, and whether it uses a mnemonic, imported private keys, a hardware device, a passphrase, or multisignature. This prevents a future recovery attempt from using an incompatible method.
- Generate or display the recovery information only in a trusted environment. Download wallet software from its legitimate source, update the operating system, and avoid entering the phrase into a website, chat, email, cloud note, or unsolicited support form. A real support representative should never need your phrase to “verify” ownership.
- Write the phrase offline. Use the wallet’s own backup screen or printed instructions. Copy each word, its order, capitalization conventions, and any required language exactly. Do not rely on memory, a screenshot, or a photograph.
- Check the copy before funding the wallet. Use the wallet’s built-in verification flow if available. Compare every word and position against the original while the phrase is still visible in the trusted setup process.
- Record separate configuration details. Note the wallet application, account names, derivation or account information shown by the wallet, and whether an additional passphrase exists. Do not invent a path or assume another wallet will infer it. For multisignature, record the policy, number of required signatures, and each signer’s public information according to that wallet’s documentation.
- Create redundant physical copies. Keep at least two copies in separate secure places so one fire, flood, theft, or household accident cannot destroy every recovery path. A durable metal backup plate can resist some physical damage, but it does not stop anyone who sees or steals the words.
- Separate the phrase from access credentials when appropriate. A wallet password may protect an application on one device; it does not replace the recovery phrase. Store passwords and additional passphrases according to a plan that allows the intended person to recover the wallet without putting all secrets in one easily found package.
- Perform a controlled recovery test. Before depositing a large balance, restore the backup on a spare or reset device using the wallet’s official procedure. Confirm that the expected accounts and receiving addresses appear. For a significant balance, first send a small amount, restore it, and verify that the balance and transaction history are visible. Do not expose the phrase to an internet-connected computer unless the wallet’s documented process requires it and you understand the risk.
- Securely destroy obsolete copies. If you rotate a wallet after exposure, treat the old phrase as compromised. Remove paper, screenshots, notes, and devices that contain it, and move funds to a newly generated wallet after verifying the new backup.
Where to store a recovery phrase
Offline physical storage
For most self-custody users, an offline written backup is safer than a networked file. Store it in a location protected against casual discovery, unauthorized access, fire, moisture, and physical loss. Paper is easy to create but can burn, fade, tear, or absorb water. A purpose-made metal plate can improve resistance to heat and wear; it is a storage medium, not a complete security system. Anyone who reads the engraved words can use them.
Use separate locations for redundant copies. A home safe plus another trusted, secure location provides geographic separation, but only if the second location is genuinely private and access is controlled. Do not label an envelope or container in a way that advertises that it holds a bitcoin recovery phrase.

Bitcoin.org’s FAQ advises not storing a recovery phrase as a photo or in a cloud service. A file on a phone, computer, email account, password manager, or cloud drive can be copied silently, synced to other devices, recovered from backups, or exposed by malware. If a digital backup is unavoidable, encrypt it before it touches a network and protect the encryption key separately. Encryption does not stop a keylogger, a compromised operating system, a malicious browser extension, or someone watching you type.

Do not put the phrase in support channels
Scammers often claim that a wallet needs a phrase to unlock, migrate, validate, or recover funds. The phrase itself is the recovery credential. Entering it into a form, screen-sharing session, messaging app, or “synchronization” page gives the recipient what they need to recreate the wallet. Close the request and use the wallet maker’s independently verified documentation instead.
Wallet-specific backup behavior
Deterministic wallets
A deterministic wallet can derive a family of addresses from one root secret, which is why one phrase often restores past and future addresses. The phrase may not restore unrelated imported keys, watch-only entries, labels, contacts, or custom wallet settings. After restoration, check every account and address type you used, not just the first receiving address.
Bitcoin Core and metadata
Bitcoin Core documentation distinguishes recovery of keys from preservation of wallet metadata. A backup may preserve labels and other wallet information that a bare key recovery does not. Wallet changes can also require a fresh backup, so follow the current Bitcoin Core documentation for the version in use. Keep dated backups when the software’s guidance calls for them, and do not assume that copying an old wallet file captures later changes.

Multisignature arrangements
In multisignature, spending may require several independent approvals. Back up each signer’s recovery information and the wallet policy that tells software how those keys fit together. A phrase for one signer is not, by itself, a complete recovery of the multisignature wallet. Losing too many signers can make funds unspendable; exposing enough signers to an attacker can make them spendable by the wrong person.

How to recover a wallet safely
- Obtain the official recovery instructions. Use the wallet maker’s current documentation and verify that the application or device is genuine. Do not follow instructions sent by an unsolicited message.
- Prepare a clean device. Update it, install only the required wallet software, and avoid entering the phrase on a shared or compromised computer. For hardware wallets, verify the device’s authenticity checks and on-device prompts.
- Enter the phrase privately. Ensure cameras, screen-sharing tools, remote-access software, browser extensions, and bystanders cannot capture it. Never paste it into a web page or send it to another person.
- Supply any required passphrase or account settings. A missing or incorrect additional passphrase can open a different, apparently empty wallet. Restore the same wallet type and account configuration used originally.
- Verify addresses before moving funds. Compare restored receiving addresses with records you trust. Check balances and transaction history, remembering that labels and metadata may not be restored with keys.
- Move funds only after verification. If the original device may have been stolen or the phrase exposed, create a new wallet with a new backup and transfer funds to it. Do not keep using a compromised phrase.
What to do when a phrase is lost or exposed
If the phrase may have been copied
Assume the wallet is compromised. On a trusted wallet, generate a new recovery phrase, verify its backup, and transfer the bitcoin to the new wallet. If the old wallet uses a passphrase or multisignature policy, move funds through a transaction that meets the wallet’s requirements. Do not wait for an attacker to prove access.
If the phrase is missing but a device still works
Do not uninstall, reset, or “repair” the working wallet until you have created and verified a new backup. Use the wallet’s documented backup function while you still have access. If the wallet was not designed to export a mnemonic, its own key-backup procedure may be different; preserve the wallet file and metadata as instructed by its documentation.
If both the device and backup are gone
There may be no technical recovery route. Customer support cannot recreate a self-custodied phrase, and the Bitcoin network has no central office that can reverse the loss. Be skeptical of anyone promising to recover funds in exchange for a fee or for another secret.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePlan for incapacity and inheritance
A recovery plan should work when the owner is injured, unconscious, or dead. Decide who should know that a plan exists, which person or people are trusted to act, and how they can obtain the required information without exposing it prematurely. Include the wallet type, the location of physical backups, the existence of any additional passphrase, and the process for restoring the wallet.
Do not publish a seed phrase in a will or ordinary email. Those documents may be copied or become public during administration. Legal requirements differ by jurisdiction, and the sources here do not prescribe a jurisdiction-specific estate structure. Consult a qualified local professional for the legal portion while keeping the technical secrets protected.
Quick Recap
Maintenance checklist
- Inspect physical backups periodically for fading, corrosion, water damage, or unauthorized access.
- Confirm that backup locations still exist and that trusted successors can reach them under the agreed conditions.
- After a wallet upgrade, account change, imported key, or policy change, check whether the wallet documentation requires a new backup.
- Keep an inventory of wallet applications, devices, account types, and multisignature participants without recording the seed itself in that inventory.
- Run a recovery test after major changes and before relying on the wallet for a larger balance.
- Review devices for malware and phishing exposure; a perfect offline backup cannot protect funds after a malicious transaction is approved.
- Retire and securely destroy old phrases after moving funds to a new wallet, but only after the new wallet has been independently verified.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Photographing the words: images sync, back up, and remain in deleted-item folders.
- Saving the phrase in cloud notes or email: an account takeover can reveal it remotely.
- Keeping every copy in one building: one fire, flood, or burglary can remove all recovery paths.
- Assuming a hardware wallet is the backup: the device can fail; the recovery phrase is what recreates the wallet.
- Testing with a large balance: verify restoration with a small amount first.
- Using a phrase from an untrusted generator: create wallets only with reputable, verified software or devices.
- Forgetting an additional passphrase: the seed alone may restore a different wallet.
- Restoring into an incompatible wallet: wallet formats and derivation methods vary; follow the original wallet’s instructions.
- Giving the phrase to “support”: legitimate support does not need the credential that controls the funds.
