The way to secure or recover an embedded XRP Ledger wallet depends on who controls its signing secret. An app or website can provide the interface while either you or a service holds the seed/private key. If you control the key, protect and back it up yourself; XRP Ledger cannot recreate a lost non-custodial key. If a provider controls it, use that provider’s official login and account-recovery process. Never give a seed phrase or private key to support, a website, or a recovery service.

What “embedded wallet” means on XRP Ledger

“Embedded” describes where the wallet appears—inside an app, website, game, exchange, or other product—not how it is owned. The visible wallet screen may show an address, balances, and transaction history, while the cryptographic key that signs transactions is stored by you, by the provider, or through a product-specific arrangement. Read the wallet’s custody and backup documentation before assuming that a password reset, export button, or device change will recover an account.

On XRP Ledger, a seed or private key can create the digital signatures that authorize transactions. The XRP Ledger documentation warns: “If someone else knows the seed or private key of your XRP Ledger account, that person can create digital signatures to authorize any transaction the same as you could.” Applied transactions cannot be undone by a privileged administrator. See Cryptographic Keys.

Custodial embedded wallet

A custodial provider holds or controls the signing keys and gives you an account login. The provider may be able to reset a password, restore access after an identity check, or manage keys internally. That is provider-level account recovery; it is not the XRP Ledger recovering a key. Loss of the provider account, email, phone, or authentication method can still block access, so secure those sign-in channels as carefully as the wallet itself.

Non-custodial embedded wallet

A non-custodial wallet gives you the seed, private key, or another signing method. You are responsible for keeping it secret and maintaining a usable backup. The official Crypto Wallets guide states that losing the keys to a non-custodial XRP Ledger account leaves you locked out with no ledger recovery option.

Questions to ask the wallet provider

  • Who creates and stores the XRP Ledger signing key?
  • Can I export or back up the seed/private key, and what exact format is used?
  • Does a password reset restore the signing key or only the app login?
  • What happens if I lose the phone, delete the app, or lose access to my email or authenticator?
  • Which XRPL transaction types, regular-key arrangements, and hardware-signing workflows are supported?

How XRP Ledger keys control an account

An XRP Ledger account has a public address that can be shared to receive funds and a secret signing authority that must remain private. The Addresses documentation explains the address side of this distinction. Sharing an address or public key does not give someone permission to spend; sharing a seed or private key does.

Master key and regular key

The master key is the account’s primary cryptographic authority. XRP Ledger also supports a regular key: a separate key that can authorize most routine account activity. The SetRegularKey transaction sets, changes, or removes that regular key.

A security-conscious arrangement is to keep the master-key material offline and use a regular key for day-to-day signing. If the regular key is exposed while the master key remains safe, the master authority can replace or remove it. This protects future control; it does not reverse transactions that already applied.

Account reserve is not a recovery fund

The XRP Ledger Accounts page currently lists a 1 XRP account reserve. Reserve requirements can change, so check the live documentation before funding a new account. The reserve does not function as insurance, a password-reset balance, or a way to reconstruct lost keys.

Secure an embedded wallet while you can still open it

  1. Identify the custody model. Locate the wallet’s official documentation and determine whether you control a seed/private key or only a provider login. Do not infer custody from the word “embedded.”
  2. Find the documented backup command. Use the wallet’s own export, backup, or recovery flow. Record the exact seed format and any passphrase or derivation requirement. A backup that omits required words, punctuation, or an additional passphrase may be unusable.
  3. Keep the secret off internet-connected notes. Do not store seed words in screenshots, email drafts, cloud documents, password-sharing links, or ordinary phone notes. Anyone who gains access to those copies may be able to sign transactions.
  4. Create a private, durable offline copy. The XRPL Offline Account Setup Tutorial describes generating and protecting keys on an offline, air-gapped machine. It also discusses encrypting a seed before writing it to disk. Follow the wallet’s documented format and verify that you can read the backup without uploading it anywhere.
  5. Separate the backup from routine access. Keep the master-key backup in a private, physically protected place. Limit who can reach it, and consider a second secure location for disaster resilience without making extra digital copies.
  6. Test the recovery procedure safely. If the wallet supports a watch-only account or a test account, verify that the backup restores the expected public address before relying on it for valuable funds. Never test by entering the seed into an unfamiliar website.
  7. Secure the app and sign-in path. Use the latest supported wallet version, a strong unique device passcode, operating-system updates, screen lock, and multi-factor authentication where the provider offers it. These controls protect the interface and account login; they do not replace a non-custodial key backup.
  8. Keep public and secret data separate. You may share an XRPL address when receiving funds. Keep seeds, private keys, encrypted key files, and recovery phrases private.

Using offline and hardware signing

Offline master-key storage

The XRPL security guidance describes a highly secure configuration in which an account’s cryptographic keys remain on an offline, air-gapped machine. An air gap reduces exposure to network attacks, but it does not eliminate risks from physical access, malware introduced through removable media, incorrect software, or an unsafe transfer process. Treat every file and device used to move an unsigned or signed transaction as part of the security boundary.

Regular key for routine transactions

For an account that supports it, keep the master key offline and configure a regular key for ordinary payments and other routine actions. Document where each authority is stored and how to remove the regular key if the signing device is lost. This arrangement is useful only if the master key remains uncompromised and accessible when an emergency change is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hardware wallet considerations

A hardware wallet is a signing tool that keeps the private key on a dedicated device; it is not a universal recovery guarantee. XRPL’s Secure Signing documentation names Ledger Nano S as an example of a device that can sign XRPL transactions without exposing its secret key to the connected computer. That example is not a current compatibility or availability list. Before buying or configuring any device, confirm that the exact embedded wallet supports the device, XRPL transaction types, firmware, and recovery process you intend to use.

Signing choice Where the secret is kept Main benefit Important limitation
Provider-managed custody Provider-controlled systems Official login support and possible password recovery You depend on the provider and its authentication process
Software wallet Phone, computer, or wallet-managed file Convenient direct control Malware, loss, and unsafe backups can expose the key
Hardware signing Dedicated signing device Can keep the key isolated from a connected phone or computer Compatibility, device loss, and seed recovery remain product-specific
Offline master key plus regular key Master key offline; regular key used routinely Limits routine exposure while preserving an emergency authority Requires correct setup and safe access to the master key

What to do if a key may have leaked

If only the regular key is exposed

If the master key is definitely safe, stop using the suspected regular-key device, preserve the evidence needed to understand what happened, and use the master authority to replace or remove the regular key. Confirm the resulting account settings from a trusted XRPL data source and generate a new regular key using a secure process.

If the master seed or private key is exposed

Assume the account is controlled by anyone who obtained the secret. Do not wait for a support reply or attempt to “hide” the key with a password change. Generate a new account securely, transfer remaining assets to it as soon as practical, and review account settings, trust lines, authorized signers, and other relationships. Any transaction that already applied remains on the ledger and cannot be reversed by an administrator.

  1. Disconnect the suspected device from normal signing use.
  2. Use a trusted, clean environment to create the replacement account and backup.
  3. Verify the new address independently before sending funds.
  4. Move assets and update services, contacts, or applications that used the old address.
  5. Stop publishing or reusing the exposed secret; treat every copy as compromised.

Recovery when the wallet is inaccessible

Custodial wallet

Use only the provider’s official recovery page or in-app process. Secure the email address, phone number, authenticator, and recovery codes associated with the account. Check whether the provider is restoring an application login or actually restoring access to the underlying XRPL account. Never send a seed phrase or private key to a support representative, even if the request appears urgent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Non-custodial wallet with a valid backup

Install the same wallet or a compatible wallet from an official source, choose its restore/import flow, and enter the backup only in that trusted application. Confirm that the restored public address matches the account you used previously. If the wallet required an additional passphrase, derivation setting, or hardware device, you need that component as well as the seed.

Non-custodial wallet without the key

If no valid seed, private key, regular key, or already configured signing authority exists, the account cannot be reconstructed from the public address or transaction history. XRP Ledger’s wallet guidance states: “If you lose your keys, you are locked out of your XRP Ledger account and there are no recovery options.” A provider cannot reset a self-held key merely because you can prove ownership of an email address.

Lost phone, deleted app, or broken device

  • If the wallet was custodial, recover the provider account first and follow its device-replacement procedure.
  • If it was non-custodial, restore from the documented backup on a trusted replacement device.
  • If a regular key was on the lost device but the master key is safe, replace the regular key before resuming routine signing.
  • If neither a backup nor another signing authority exists, do not pay anyone who promises to reconstruct the account from its address.

How to avoid fake recovery help

A known seed can reconstruct an address, which is why XRPL restricts the administrative wallet_propose method partly to reduce secret interception. The method’s documentation is at wallet_propose. The practical rule is simple: do not paste a seed or private key into a browser form, public chat, support ticket, code snippet, online “validator,” or untrusted recovery tool.

  • Legitimate support should not need your seed words or private key.
  • Never install remote-control software at a stranger’s request to “recover” funds.
  • Do not send a small test payment to an address supplied by an unverified helper.
  • Use bookmarks or the provider’s official app to reach recovery pages; phishing pages can imitate a wallet interface.
  • Assume a secret is compromised if you entered it into an untrusted service, and follow the migration steps for an exposed master key.

Choosing between custody and signing arrangements

Decision What to compare Security and recovery question
Custodial versus non-custodial Who holds the keys, password-reset support, provider dependence, and user control Will a provider restore the account, or must you supply your own cryptographic backup?
Hardware versus software signing Secret location, exposure to connected devices, convenience, and wallet compatibility Can the exact embedded wallet sign the transactions you need, and do you understand its device-loss recovery?
Master key versus regular key Authority scope, storage location, routine exposure, and emergency replacement Can a protected master authority remove a compromised regular key?

There is no custody label that makes a wallet automatically safe. A custodial service concentrates recovery in the provider and its authentication systems. A non-custodial wallet gives you direct control but makes backup discipline non-negotiable. Hardware and offline arrangements reduce certain exposure paths while introducing compatibility, physical-security, and operational requirements.

Practical security checklist

  • Confirm whether the embedded wallet is custodial or non-custodial.
  • Identify the exact secret or signing method that authorizes XRPL transactions.
  • Back up the seed/private key using the wallet’s documented format.
  • Keep backups out of screenshots, cloud notes, email, and public support channels.
  • Protect the device, app login, email, phone number, and authentication factors.
  • Consider offline master-key storage and a regular key for routine signing when supported.
  • Verify hardware-wallet compatibility with the exact embedded wallet before relying on it.
  • Share addresses only when needed; never share signing secrets.
  • If a regular key leaks and the master key is safe, replace or remove the regular key.
  • If the master key leaks, migrate remaining assets to a newly generated account.
  • Use only official recovery procedures and reject anyone requesting your seed.
