Keep OpenCode on its default loopback address unless another device must connect. If network access is necessary, set OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORD before starting the server, then bind it to the narrowest address that serves your use case. OpenCode documents HTTP Basic Authentication for this password, with opencode as the default username and OPENCODE_SERVER_USERNAME available when you need a different one.
Only add the browser origins your custom frontend actually uses with --cors. CORS controls which browser origins may make requests; it does not authenticate users, encrypt traffic, or act as a firewall. The procedure below covers local-only use, a trusted LAN, WSL, and the limits of the documented guidance for public Internet deployment.
Choose the smallest exposure that works
OpenCode’s documented default is local binding. The serve command uses 127.0.0.1 by default, and opencode web starts on localhost. A process bound this way accepts connections from the same machine, but not from another computer on your LAN.
Moving to 0.0.0.0 changes the security boundary: the service listens on every network interface available to the host. That can include a wired or wireless LAN interface, a VPN interface, a virtual-machine bridge, and other paths you did not intend to share. Select the reach you need before changing the hostname.

| Use case | Listening choice | Authentication | CORS | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Only the computer running OpenCode | Leave the default loopback binding | Still use a password if any other path could reach the process | Usually unnecessary for the built-in local interface | Only local clients can connect |
| Another device on a trusted private network | Use a deliberate network-facing hostname, commonly 0.0.0.0 when the documented command requires all interfaces |
Set OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORD before launch |
Only the origin of a custom browser frontend | Connections work from the intended LAN and fail from unintended networks |
| Remote access across an untrusted network | Use a controlled network path rather than assuming a broad bind is safe | Set the password and protect the path separately | Allow only the required frontend origins | Transport protection, ingress controls, and proxy behavior have been verified for your exact deployment |
The official pages establish the first four configuration decisions, but they do not provide a complete TLS-termination or reverse-proxy recipe for public Internet use. Do not treat the example LAN command as a production Internet deployment.
Know what each OpenCode control does
Hostname and binding
The --hostname option determines which local addresses the server listens on. 127.0.0.1 is a loopback address, so only software on the same host can normally reach it. 0.0.0.0 is a wildcard listen address: it asks the operating system to accept connections on all IPv4 interfaces. It does not mean “the Internet,” but it makes every reachable IPv4 interface a possible entry point unless another control blocks it.
Binding is not authentication. A service on a private address can still be exposed through routing, port forwarding, a VPN, a virtual network, or an accidental firewall rule. Conversely, a password does not make an unnecessarily broad bind harmless. Treat the hostname and the password as separate controls.

OpenCode documents OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORD as the setting that protects the server with HTTP Basic Authentication. The default username is opencode. If the deployment benefits from a different login name, set OPENCODE_SERVER_USERNAME; changing the name does not compensate for a weak password.
Basic Authentication sends credentials with requests in an authorization header. The reviewed OpenCode pages do not establish encryption in transit, so do not infer that a password-protected HTTP endpoint is suitable for an untrusted network by itself. Use a separately verified encrypted transport or a private, trusted network path appropriate to your environment.

CORS origins
The server accepts one or more --cors origins for browser applications hosted somewhere other than the OpenCode server’s own origin. An origin consists of a scheme, host, and port, such as http://localhost:3000. Add only the exact origins required by the frontend.
CORS is enforced by browsers. It does not prevent a non-browser client from opening a TCP connection, does not replace Basic Authentication, and does not filter general network traffic. A permissive CORS value can make a browser-based attack easier, but a restrictive value cannot hide a server that is reachable and unauthenticated.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRemote CLI attachment
The CLI documents attach for connecting a client to a running backend and supports username and password options. Use it as a client connection mechanism after the server’s listening scope and authentication are correct. The existence of an attach command is not a reason to publish the endpoint to every network.
Set the secret before you bind to a network
Choose a unique, high-entropy password that is not used for another service. Set it in the environment before the process starts, rather than launching an unauthenticated listener and adding the variable later. Keep it out of screenshots, terminal recordings, public issue reports, shared shell history, and copied process listings where possible.
The documented variable is OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORD. If you change the username, use OPENCODE_SERVER_USERNAME in the same environment. Confirm that the account or service manager launching OpenCode receives the variables; setting them in one interactive shell does not automatically configure a separately managed process.

Local-only setup
If the browser or CLI runs on the same computer, do not add a network-facing hostname merely to make the URL easier to remember. Start opencode web or opencode serve with its default localhost behavior and connect through the local address shown by the command.
- Use this mode for a single workstation, development laptop, or a host where no other device needs access.
- Do not add
--corsunless a separate local frontend genuinely needs a cross-origin request. - Still consider setting a password when scripts, containers, virtual machines, port forwards, or shared users could reach the listener through another path.
Local binding reduces reachable interfaces; it is not a substitute for checking what other software on the host can do.
Expose OpenCode to a trusted LAN
For a private-network client, the essential order is: set the password, choose the hostname, start the server, and then verify from both the intended and an unintended network. The following pattern reflects the documented flags:
OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORD='<unique-secret>' opencode serve --hostname 0.0.0.0 --port 4096
This is a configuration pattern, not a tested deployment command. It illustrates the environment variable and flags documented for the server. It does not establish encryption in transit, firewall policy, or safe exposure to the public Internet.
- Decide which interface should be reachable. If OpenCode supports binding directly to the host’s private address in the version you use, prefer that address over a wildcard. If your documented command only uses
0.0.0.0for LAN access, understand that all IPv4 interfaces will listen and compensate with host or network firewall rules. - Create the secret in the launch environment. Export or inject
OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORDbefore starting the process. UseOPENCODE_SERVER_USERNAMEonly when a non-default login name is useful. - Start the listener. Supply the intended port and hostname. Record the exact command or service configuration privately so the same authenticated settings are used after a restart.
- Connect from the second device. Use the server host’s private IP address and port, then provide the documented Basic Authentication credentials. Do not use
localhostfrom the second device: there, it refers to the second device itself. - Check the boundary. Test from the intended LAN, then test from a network that should not have access. A successful login from the wrong network indicates a routing or firewall problem, not a CORS problem.
Allow a custom browser frontend without over-opening CORS
Use --cors only when a browser application is served from an origin different from the OpenCode endpoint. Supply the complete origin, including scheme and port, and add each required origin explicitly according to the CLI syntax for your installed version.

OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORD='<unique-secret>' opencode serve --hostname 0.0.0.0 --port 4096 --cors http://localhost:3000
The example allows a frontend at http://localhost:3000; it does not allow every host and does not grant the frontend a bypass around authentication. If the frontend moves from HTTP to HTTPS, changes port, or uses a different hostname, its origin changes as well. Update the allowlist deliberately rather than replacing it with a wildcard.
- List only origins you operate or explicitly trust.
- Do not put a path, username, or trailing URL path in an origin value.
- Remember that command-line CORS settings apply to browser-origin checks, not to port exposure or non-browser clients.
Use OpenCode from WSL carefully
The OpenCode WSL documentation shows a network-facing server command and explicitly requires setting OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORD when using --hostname 0.0.0.0. Apply the same sequence inside the WSL environment: establish the secret first, bind only when another device needs access, and verify how the Windows host, WSL virtual network, and LAN route traffic in your setup.
A wildcard bind inside WSL can be reachable through more than the interface you had in mind, depending on the WSL networking mode and Windows forwarding rules. Check the address and port from the actual client device instead of assuming that a successful connection from Windows proves LAN exposure is correctly restricted.

Verification should answer two different questions: does the intended client reach the authenticated server, and can an unintended client reach it at all? Perform both checks after the initial launch and after any change to the hostname, port, frontend, VPN, router, WSL mode, or firewall.

- From the intended client, open the server address or use the documented CLI attachment flow.
- Confirm that an unauthenticated request is rejected and that the configured credentials are required. The exact status presentation can vary by client; the important result is that the server does not operate as an open endpoint.
- Confirm that the custom frontend works only from an origin you explicitly allowed. A browser error from an unlisted origin is expected when CORS is restrictive.
- From a device or network that should not connect, attempt the address and port. It should be unreachable because of the chosen binding and network controls, not merely because a browser blocks the request.
- Inspect the host’s listening sockets and firewall rules using the operating-system tools appropriate to your platform. Confirm the process, address, and port match the design.
- Repeat the checks after a restart so that environment variables and service-manager settings are proven persistent.
Do not publish the password or successful connection details in a public log while documenting these checks.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The second device cannot connect
- Check that the server is not still bound to
127.0.0.1. A local browser can work even when every remote connection must fail. - Use the server machine’s reachable private address, not
localhostor127.0.0.1on the client. - Verify that the selected port is correct and that the host firewall, wireless client isolation, VPN policy, and router rules permit the intended path.
- If the process is in WSL or a container, check the boundary between that environment and the host or LAN; a listener inside one namespace is not automatically reachable from another.
The browser reports a CORS error
- Compare the browser’s exact origin with the value supplied to
--cors, including scheme, hostname, and port. - Do not “fix” a CORS error by removing authentication or binding more broadly.
- Test the endpoint with the documented CLI or another non-browser client to separate a browser-origin issue from a routing or authentication issue.
Authentication keeps failing
- Confirm that the running process received
OPENCODE_SERVER_PASSWORD, rather than only the shell in which you edited it. - Check whether a service manager, shell profile, container definition, or WSL startup path replaced the variable.
- Use the configured username. If
OPENCODE_SERVER_USERNAMEis absent, the documented default isopencode. - Reset the secret in the launch environment and restart the server; do not expose it while troubleshooting.
The server is reachable from an unintended network
- Stop the process or return it to loopback while investigating.
- Check for a wildcard bind, port forwarding, VPN route, virtual interface, cloud security rule, or host firewall exception.
- Remove unnecessary ingress paths, then repeat the outside-boundary test. CORS changes alone cannot correct this condition.
What changes for public Internet access
The reviewed OpenCode documentation establishes server operation, Basic Authentication, hostname selection, CORS, CLI attachment, and the WSL password requirement. It does not establish a complete, version-specific recipe for TLS termination, reverse-proxy headers, certificate renewal, rate limiting, or production ingress policy.
Therefore, do not copy the LAN pattern directly to a public address and call it production-ready. Before choosing that design, verify current guidance for the exact OpenCode version and deployment platform, then separately design and test:
- encrypted transport from the client to the endpoint;
- an ingress or proxy policy that exposes only the required port and path;
- network-level restrictions such as a private tunnel, allowlisted source ranges, or an access gateway;
- credential storage, rotation, revocation, and logging that do not leak the Basic Authentication secret;
- updates and rollback for OpenCode and the surrounding proxy or operating system.
If those controls are not independently verified, keep the server on loopback or a private network and use a controlled remote-access method instead of publishing the listener.

Version and documentation caveat
The official pages used for these controls do not state a publication date or an OpenCode version in the surfaced material. Command flags, environment-variable behavior, and WSL networking can change. Before applying this guide, compare opencode serve, opencode web, attach, and --cors with the documentation shipped for the version you will run. Preserve the security order—narrow binding, password before exposure, minimal browser origins—even when syntax changes.
