Secure an open-source project by making the evidence—not the apparent use of AI—the basis for every decision. Publish a private vulnerability-reporting process, ask for reproducible impact details, verify fixes yourself, and require a human contributor to understand and stand behind every pull request. AI-generated text can be useful input, but it is neither proof that a report is valid nor proof that it is abuse.
The workflow below adapts the OpenSSF maintainer guide to coordinated vulnerability disclosure, GitHub’s platform guidance, and the OpenSSF Vulnerability Disclosures Working Group’s ongoing discussion. The working-group issue is an open policy discussion rather than a binding standard, so treat its recommendations as options to adopt deliberately.
1. Publish the rules before anyone reports a vulnerability
Unclear intake creates more risk than AI-generated prose. A contributor who cannot find a private channel may put exploit details in a public issue, while maintainers may waste time arguing about writing style instead of testing the behavior. Put the process in a prominent SECURITY.md file and link it from the README or another page that users and contributors routinely visit.

What the security policy should say
- Where to send a suspected vulnerability privately: a platform reporting feature, encrypted email address, or another controlled channel.
- Who receives reports and who can access them. Limit access to the maintainers who need the information while the issue is being resolved.
- What information a report should contain, including affected versions, configurations, prerequisites, reproduction steps, observed and expected behavior, and security impact.
- How you acknowledge receipt and how you will communicate during triage. If you publish a target such as “within 1–2 days,” describe it as a project goal that reflects your actual capacity, not a guarantee.
- Whether the project requests disclosure of AI assistance, permits autonomous agents to open pull requests or push commits, and what a human submitter must understand and verify.
- How confirmed issues are coordinated, fixed, released, and disclosed, including any limits on embargoed downstream notification.
The OpenSSF guide recommends a consistent intake path and a prominently linked policy. Consistency matters when reports arrive in bursts: every maintainer should know where a report belongs and which questions to ask first.

Choose accountable owners
A small project can assign vulnerability handling to its maintainers. A larger project may appoint a small, trusted security group with enough product knowledge to reproduce issues and enough separation to protect sensitive details. Name the responsible role or team in the policy, define a backup for absences, and keep the recipient list narrower than the project’s general contributor list.
2. Use a private channel for potential vulnerabilities
Do not ask reporters to post exploit instructions in a public issue. On GitHub, repository owners and administrators of public repositories can enable private vulnerability reporting. A report can then be handled as a draft repository advisory while maintainers and the reporter discuss the finding and prepare a fix before publication. GitHub documents the feature and coordinated-disclosure process at its coordinated disclosure guidance.
GitHub-specific setup and fallback
- Open the repository’s security settings and enable private vulnerability reporting if the project can monitor it reliably.
- Link the reporting option from
SECURITY.mdand the README, and explain what details belong in a private report. - Restrict advisory access to the maintainers who need it; do not copy sensitive proof-of-concept material into ordinary issue threads or public pull requests.
- When private reporting is unavailable, follow GitHub’s documented fallback: ask the reporter to request a security contact without placing vulnerability details in a public issue.
These steps are GitHub-specific. Other forges and self-hosted systems may use different names, permissions, or workflows, so describe the actual channel your project can protect and monitor.
Private does not mean permanently hidden
Confidentiality is a triage and remediation control. Keep exploit details, vulnerable code paths, and proposed fixes private while you confirm the issue and test a release. Plan eventual disclosure so affected users receive enough information to update or mitigate, but do not promise a universal deadline that the project cannot meet.
3. Triage evidence and impact, not writing style
AI authorship is a weak signal. The OpenSSF Vulnerability Disclosures Working Group notes that there is no reliable technical indicator for AI-generated content and that detection is imperfect. A polished report may be wrong; a terse report may identify a serious flaw. Apply the same evidence-based questions to both.

Request the minimum useful evidence
Ask the reporter to provide:
- The exact project and affected versions, branches, builds, operating systems, and relevant configuration.
- Prerequisites such as authentication, network position, feature flags, special permissions, or user interaction.
- Numbered reproduction steps, a minimal proof of concept, or a proof of vulnerability that can be shared privately.
- Expected behavior and observed behavior, including logs or error output that do not expose unrelated secrets.
- The security consequence: what an attacker can read, change, execute, impersonate, or prevent, and under which conditions.
- Any proposed patch or regression test, clearly identified as an unverified contribution.
If the initial report lacks these details, ask focused follow-up questions rather than rejecting it. A privately shared proof of concept can make a claim concrete, but it does not establish severity or correctness until you reproduce it in the project’s real context.
Classify the behavior
Determine whether the finding is a security vulnerability, an ordinary bug, intentional behavior, or a hardening suggestion. Evaluate compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability, along with exploit prerequisites and realistic reach. Do not simply adopt a severity score supplied by the reporter or an AI tool; establish what access or harm is actually possible.

Check existing issues, advisories, and prior reports for duplicates. The OpenSSF and CNCF guide identifies duplicate findings as a growing triage burden as AI-assisted scanning scales. A duplicate can still provide useful reproduction evidence, but it should be linked to the already tracked case rather than creating parallel public discussion.
Budget for review time
The OpenSSF and CNCF 2026 guide states that “Each vulnerability report can take a developer between 1-8 hours to review and evaluate.” The guide does not specify a sampling method or population for that figure, so use it as an indication of possible workload rather than a universal average. Your published response target should reflect available maintainers and the complexity of the codebase.
4. Decide what to do with each outcome
When the report is valid
- Confirm the affected versions and conditions privately.
- Record the security impact, affected code paths, and any known exploitation evidence.
- Agree a reasonable communication and disclosure timeline with the reporter. Account for exploitability, patch complexity, and downstream users rather than applying a fixed deadline automatically.
- Develop and test a fix in a private branch or draft advisory.
- Ask whether the reporter wants to help, while retaining independent maintainer control of verification and release decisions.
- Prepare a patched release and advisory that identify affected versions and give users actionable remediation.
When it is not a vulnerability
Explain whether the behavior is an ordinary defect, intended operation, or hardening opportunity, and route it to the normal issue process when appropriate. A report that appears machine-written is not false on that basis. If the evidence is incomplete, state what could not be reproduced and what additional information would change the assessment.

When the report is a duplicate
Connect it to the existing private case, preserve any new reproduction details, and tell the reporter that the issue is already being handled. Avoid publishing exploit information merely to prove that a duplicate was recognized.

5. Review AI-assisted pull requests as untrusted contributions
A pull request needs a responsible human author, regardless of whether a person, an assistant, or an autonomous agent produced portions of the code. Require the submitter to explain the threat model, design choices, limitations, and relevant tests in terms they understand. The OpenSSF and CNCF guide emphasizes the priority of fixes over the volume of findings: “Fixes are more important than findings. Full stop.” Attribute that sentence to the guide, not to an individual.
Set a written project policy
Projects can choose different rules, but the choice should be explicit and consistently enforced. State:
| Policy decision | Questions to answer | Reason to define it |
|---|---|---|
| AI-use disclosure | Must contributors disclose assistance, and where should they record it? | Gives reviewers context without treating disclosure as a quality verdict. |
| Human accountability | What explanation and verification must the human submitter provide? | Ensures someone can maintain the code after merge. |
| Autonomous submissions | May an agent open a PR, push commits, or submit security findings? | Controls review volume, credentials, and responsibility. |
| Review and testing | Which ordinary checks, approvals, and regression tests apply? | Keeps the quality bar the same for assisted and unassisted changes. |
The working-group discussion records these as emerging policy principles, not universal requirements. One project may prohibit autonomous pushes; another may permit them only through a controlled bot account and mandatory human approval. Whatever you choose, apply it to every contributor.
Inspect the diff systematically
- Confirm that the change is limited to the stated problem; remove unrelated generated files or formatting churn.
- Review dependency additions, version changes, lockfiles, build scripts, and generated artifacts for supply-chain and licensing implications.
- Look for unsafe defaults, weakened authorization checks, broadened network or filesystem access, leaked secrets, and error messages that disclose sensitive data.
- Check boundary conditions, input validation, concurrency, serialization, privilege transitions, and failure handling.
- Run the project’s normal unit, integration, static-analysis, and security checks. Add a regression test that fails on the vulnerable behavior and passes with the fix when practical.
- Ask the human author to explain any code or test they cannot justify; do not merge an opaque patch merely because an AI tool claims it is secure.
Review generated tests as untrusted code. A test can pass while asserting the wrong behavior, omit an exploit prerequisite, or encode a brittle implementation detail. Independent maintainer review remains necessary.

6. Do not use AI-text detectors as a validity gate
Writing style, unusual verbosity, and detector scores cannot establish whether a vulnerability exists. The working-group issue explicitly describes AI detection as imperfect and identifies no reliable technical signal for authorship. Detector use can also penalize legitimate reporters, expose submitted material to another service, and distract reviewers from reproduction.
If a project asks for AI-use disclosure, use it to set expectations about accountability and review—not to decide whether a claim deserves testing. A report with no disclosure still receives evidence-based triage, and a disclosed report still requires full verification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Coordinate a fix and public disclosure
Standard coordinated disclosure
For most projects, the sequence is private confirmation, patch development, testing, release, and an advisory published with the reporter. The advisory should identify affected versions, fixed versions, upgrade or mitigation steps, and any conditions users need to evaluate. Coordinate the publication time so users can act when the information becomes public.
When an embargo may help
Embargoed downstream notification can give package distributors, operating-system providers, or hosted integrators time to prepare. Compare the choice against:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Factor | Standard coordinated release | Embargoed downstream notice |
|---|---|---|
| Patch complexity | Works when a fix and release can be prepared with the reporter. | Useful when multiple downstream patches need synchronized preparation. |
| Exploitability | May be preferable when secrecy adds little protection. | Can reduce exposure during preparation, but a leak can end the advantage. |
| Provider needs | Downstream users learn at publication and respond afterward. | Selected providers receive advance information under agreed confidentiality. |
| Maintainer workload | Simpler administration and fewer recipients. | Requires tracking recipients, dates, communications, and leak response. |
| Leak risk | No embargo list to leak. | Every additional recipient increases coordination and disclosure risk. |
An embargo is not necessary for every project. Use one only when the expected downstream preparation benefit justifies the administrative burden and your team can maintain confidentiality.

8. A practical intake checklist for maintainers
Keep this checklist beside the private report queue:
- Confirm receipt without stating prematurely that the finding is a vulnerability. The OpenSSF guide gives “within 1-2 days” as an example acknowledgment target; adapt it to your published policy.
- Move the conversation to the designated private channel if sensitive details arrived publicly, and redact or remove exposed material according to platform procedures.
- Capture affected versions, configurations, prerequisites, reproduction steps, expected and observed behavior, and security impact.
- Search existing advisories and issues for duplicates.
- Reproduce the behavior in an isolated environment using the smallest safe proof of concept available.
- Classify the result as vulnerability, ordinary bug, intended behavior, hardening suggestion, duplicate, or unresolved pending evidence.
- For a vulnerability, restrict access, agree communication timing, develop and test the patch, and decide whether downstream providers need an embargo.
- Independently verify every proposed fix and regression test before merging.
- Release the fix and publish an actionable advisory with affected and fixed versions.
- Record lessons for the policy, tests, documentation, and monitoring without publishing exploit details that users do not need.
9. Keep the process sustainable as AI-assisted volume grows
AI tools can produce useful hypotheses, reproduction scripts, patches, and tests, but they can also be wrong, duplicative, verbose, or overconfident about severity. Make the intake form request structured evidence so reviewers spend less time extracting facts from prose. Maintain templates for acknowledgment, requests for missing information, duplicate notices, and non-vulnerability explanations. Automate routing and reminders where safe, but keep the security judgment and merge decision with accountable maintainers.
Review the policy after incidents and after changes in project capacity. “Everyone is at different stages of their AI journeys,” the OpenSSF and CNCF 2026 guide observes. That reality supports adaptable rules, not a lower security bar: projects can change disclosure requirements or autonomous-agent permissions while retaining the same obligation to reproduce, test, and explain consequential changes.

A secure response to AI-generated reports is ordinary responsible disclosure applied consistently. Reporters receive a private route and clear expectations. Maintainers assess behavior, affected versions, prerequisites, and impact rather than grammar. Valid findings lead to independently tested fixes; invalid or incomplete findings receive a reasoned response and an appropriate routing decision. Pull requests—whether written by hand, with assistance, or by an agent—must have a human who understands the change and accepts responsibility for it.
This approach protects confidentiality without making secrecy the definition of security, and it preserves openness without allowing unverified code or sensational findings to set the project’s priorities.
