Secure an AI coding agent by limiting what it can access in the execution environment and in every tool backend—not by asking it to behave. Give it a distinct identity, narrowly scoped and short-lived credentials, restricted filesystem and network access, and auditable tool permissions. Require human approval at high-risk boundaries, then review its changes independently before merging.
This matters because an agent may read repository files, web pages, and dependency documentation that contain malicious instructions; invoke tools; edit files; run commands; and communicate over networks. If it operates as a developer, its actions can inherit that developer’s access and expose the same systems and data. OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI Cheat Sheet and AI Agent and MCP Security guidance treat these as trust-boundary and least-privilege problems—not problems that a careful-sounding prompt can solve.
What least privilege means for a coding agent
Least privilege means granting an agent only the access needed for its assigned task, for only as long as needed. Apply that rule separately to its identity, repositories, files, commands, tools, credentials, and network destinations. Start from deny and add explicit permissions rather than inheriting a developer’s full access.
A prompt such as “do not read secrets” can help communicate intent, but it does not prevent a process from opening a file or a tool from making an unauthorized request. Repository content, web pages, dependency documentation, and tool descriptions are inputs the agent may encounter; they can contain instructions that conflict with the task. Enforce permissions in the environment that runs the agent and in the backend that executes each tool call. OWASP’s AI security guidance recommends backend authorization, per-tool and per-operation allowlists, narrowly typed schemas, argument validation, and binding calls to the initiating user or session.

How to restrict what an AI coding agent can access
Use the following sequence for a new deployment or when tightening an existing one. Apply the controls to each workload class; an agent that only reviews code does not need the same permissions as one that edits files and runs tests.
-
Create a separate, attributable identity
Give each agent or workload class its own service account, bot identity, or GitHub App rather than running it as a developer. Separate identities make actions attributable and let you revoke one agent’s access without disabling a person’s account. Bind tool calls to the initiating user or session so the backend can distinguish who requested an action from which agent executed it.
-
Define the smallest useful scope
Explicitly allow only the repositories, paths, tools, commands, and operations required for the task. Separate read from write permissions, and keep high-impact actions—such as changing access controls or deployment configuration—outside routine write permissions. Check that the scope also excludes unrelated projects and sensitive directories, not just that it includes the target files.

Use short-lived, task-scoped credentials
Issue credentials for one task or session where possible, with only the permissions that task needs and an expiry or revocation path. Do not put production credentials, SSH keys, cloud CLI configuration, or long-lived developer secrets in prompts, agent configuration files, or the execution environment. When a workflow genuinely needs a secret, use a controlled secret-brokering mechanism that releases only the necessary credential to the authorized operation; do not expose a general-purpose credential store to agent-generated code.
-
Isolate files and commands
Run the agent in an isolated environment, such as a development container, restricted shell, virtual machine, or ephemeral cloud workspace. Limit writable paths and executable tools to the task’s needs. Block access to credential stores, SSH keys, cloud configuration, production secrets, and unrelated sensitive directories. A writable source tree does not require unrestricted access to the host filesystem.
-
Restrict outbound network access
Default outbound access to denied or tightly restricted, then allow only destinations the workflow requires. That reduces the ways an agent or malicious content it encounters could send data elsewhere or reach unrelated services. OpenAI’s Sandbox security documentation advises allowing outbound traffic only to approved endpoints and keeping application API keys outside the sandbox. Its article Running Codex safely at OpenAI, dated May 8, 2026, describes managed network policies that allow expected destinations, block prohibited ones, and require approval for unfamiliar domains. These are documented examples, not evidence that every coding-agent product offers the same controls.

Enforce tool permissions outside the prompt
Every tool should have a backend authorization check before execution. Treat a tool call as a request to perform a specific operation—not as proof that the agent is allowed to perform it. Validate the caller, operation, target, and arguments against policy, and reject calls that fall outside the approved scope. Use narrowly typed inputs rather than accepting broad, ambiguous commands where a more constrained operation will do.
- Bind each call to the initiating user and session, and check that identity at the backend.
- Use per-tool and per-operation allowlists; an agent allowed to read a repository should not automatically be allowed to write to it or create a deployment.
- Validate targets and arguments before execution, including paths, commands, repository identifiers, and network destinations.
- Log rejected attempts as well as successful calls so policy violations and repeated probing are visible.
- Keep approval and authorization distinct: approval can authorize a particular high-risk action, but it should not silently grant broad, persistent access.
These controls address confused-deputy risk: a tool or service should not use its own broader authority to carry out an agent’s request without checking whether the initiating user and task are authorized. OWASP’s AI Security and Privacy Guide, under “General controls,” describes backend authorization, identity binding, validation, scoped credentials, and logging rejected tool calls.
Where to require human approval
Pause for explicit approval when an action expands access, touches sensitive data, reaches an unfamiliar external system, or could make a high-impact change. Examples include requests to access a new destination, use a credential outside its task scope, change permissions, or modify deployment or CI configuration. Approval should be tied to the action and its relevant details so a reviewer can make an informed decision.

Do not ask a human to approve every harmless action. Safely allowlist routine low-risk operations and use isolation to contain them; reserve review for decisions with meaningful impact. If the review mechanism is unavailable for a sensitive workflow, fail closed rather than proceeding without the required check.
Require an independent human to review proposed code changes before merge. The agent should not approve or merge its own pull request. OpenAI’s Cybersecurity checks documentation gives guidance for sensitive API workflows: review proposed tool calls against approved scope, deny unauthorized actions, pause ambiguous or high-risk changes for human approval, maintain independent filesystem and network boundaries, keep audit logs, and fail closed when review is unavailable. Those API workflow recommendations should not be confused with product-side sandbox controls.
What to log for AI coding agent audits
Send audit events to a centralized system outside the agent’s control. Record enough context to attribute an action, understand the policy decision, and reconstruct what happened, while avoiding secret values. OWASP’s AI Agent and MCP Security guidance summarizes the goal: “Log every tool call, command, file write, and network request with the agent identity, the initiating user, the session, and the resulting diff.”

For each event, capture the fields that apply:
- Agent identity, initiating user, session, and task or request reference.
- Tool name, requested operation, validated arguments, and target.
- Command executed, files written, or network destination requested.
- Policy outcome, including approval required or granted, denial reason, and any reviewer decision.
- Tool result and the resulting code diff or other relevant change.
- Event time and enough correlation information to connect related actions in an investigation.
Do not put credential values, tokens, or other secret contents into the audit record. Log that a credential was requested or used and the policy outcome, not the secret itself. Restrict access to logs and retain them under your organization’s security and privacy requirements.
Alert on events that deserve investigation
Use centralized monitoring to flag activity that is unusual for the workload, including credential-file access, unexpected network destinations, bulk reads, newly introduced MCP servers, and changes to agent instruction files or CI configuration. Tune alerts to the agent’s expected behavior so meaningful deviations are visible without making routine activity unusable.
Logs help detect suspicious activity and reconstruct an incident; they do not prevent an unauthorized read, write, command, or network request. Preventive controls must be enforced before the action occurs. OpenAI describes using Codex logs in its own security triage to examine the original user request, tool activity, approvals, tool results, and relevant network-policy decisions or blocks. That is an account of OpenAI’s practice, not a universal feature guarantee for other products.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to evaluate an agent environment
Compare deployment choices by the controls they actually enforce and expose for your workflow. OWASP names development containers, restricted shells, virtual machines, and ephemeral cloud workspaces as possible isolation approaches; the category name alone does not establish that a particular setup blocks a given path, command, or destination.
| Evaluation area | Questions to verify |
|---|---|
| Filesystem, process, and network isolation | Can you restrict writable paths, executable tools, sensitive directories, and outbound destinations? Are those boundaries enforced independently of agent instructions? |
| Identity and credentials | Can you use a distinct identity, scope credentials to a task, keep them out of the agent’s general environment, and revoke them promptly? |
| Tool authorization | Are permissions default-deny, centrally managed, validated at the backend, and reviewable? Can you distinguish read, write, and high-impact operations? |
| Human approval | Can high-risk or ambiguous actions be paused for a meaningful approval decision? What happens if review is unavailable? |
| Audit and monitoring | Can events be exported, retained, and monitored outside the agent’s control, with enough context to attribute activity and investigate changes? |
The reviewed guidance does not establish a performance or cost ranking among these environment types. Choose based on whether the controls you need are available, enforced, and verifiable in your deployment—not on the label alone.
Operational checks before enabling an agent
- Confirm the agent uses a distinct identity and that its access can be revoked independently.
- Verify the allowed repositories, paths, tools, commands, and network destinations against the specific task.
- Check that production credentials, SSH keys, cloud configuration, and unrelated secrets are inaccessible to the agent process.
- Test that out-of-scope tool calls and network requests are denied by the environment or backend—not merely discouraged by a prompt.
- Confirm approval is required for the high-risk actions you identified, and that an unavailable reviewer cannot be bypassed.
- Verify that successful and rejected actions reach a central log, that secret values are excluded, and that relevant alerts are monitored.
- Require an independent person to review the diff and associated changes before merge.
Product controls and configuration options can change. Check the current official documentation for the specific agent, tools, and environment you deploy; do not assume a control documented for one product exists in another.
