Secure service accounts by replacing reusable domain-user credentials with sMSAs or gMSAs where possible, removing unnecessary privilege, restricting password retrieval, correcting SPNs, and eliminating legacy Kerberos encryption dependencies through tested change control. For accounts that must remain conventional users, use unique long secrets, disciplined rotation, and close monitoring. These controls reduce the material an attacker can crack and limit what a compromised identity can access; none makes Kerberoasting impossible by itself.

What Kerberoasting and ticket abuse expose

Kerberoasting abuses a normal Kerberos capability: an authenticated domain user can request a service ticket for an account that has a service principal name (SPN). The requester can capture ticket material and attempt to crack it offline. The danger is greatest when the SPN-bearing identity uses a weak, reused, old, or poorly managed secret. A cracked password can then provide the service account’s permissions and access to every resource that trusts that identity.

Ticket abuse is broader than password cracking. Investigators may see unexpected service-ticket requests, authentication from hosts that should not run the service, or access to sensitive resources outside the service’s normal function. Kerberos encryption choices affect the strength of ticket material, but changing encryption does not repair excessive privilege or a weak password.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical objective is therefore layered: know which identities and SPNs exist, move compatible services to managed identities, minimize privilege and host scope, maintain strong credentials for exceptions, remove avoidable RC4 dependencies, and monitor for behavior that does not match the service design.

Start with an inventory before changing an account

Changing a service identity is an application change, not merely a directory edit. Build an owner-led inventory and record enough detail to predict the blast radius of a migration or password change.

Accounts and SPNs to locate

  • Every account with one or more SPNs, including conventional domain users, sMSAs, and gMSAs.
  • Accounts configured to run Windows services, scheduled work, agents, application pools, or integration jobs.
  • Duplicate, stale, or orphaned SPNs and accounts whose owners cannot be identified.
  • Identities that have not authenticated recently but still retain permissions or SPNs.

Defender for Identity documents service-account discovery that can help identify qualifying user identities, sMSAs, and gMSAs. Treat that capability as an inventory aid, then validate the result against service configuration and owner records.

Record the dependencies

  • Business and technical owner, service name, environment, and change contact.
  • Every host on which the service runs, including failover, load-balanced, and disaster-recovery hosts.
  • SPNs, DNS names, ports, firewall paths, and network locations used by clients.
  • Group memberships, local rights, delegated permissions, and access to sensitive data.
  • Whether the application supports an sMSA or gMSA, and which Windows Server versions participate.
  • Kerberos encryption types currently used or explicitly configured, plus any known RC4-only client or service.
  • Ticket lifetime and renewal assumptions, clock-synchronization dependencies, and the rollback owner.

Use owner confirmation to retire unused identities and duplicate SPNs. Removing an object that still serves a production dependency can cause an outage, so verify usage before cleanup.

Choose the least-exposed service identity

Select the identity type according to host topology, application support, credential exposure, and migration risk. Do not choose an account class solely because it is newer; confirm that the application and platform support it.

Identity type Best-fit use Credential characteristic Important boundary
gMSA A compatible service running on one or multiple computers, including shared or load-balanced instances Windows manages the password; Microsoft’s 2023 guidance describes a 240-byte randomly generated password and automatic changes every 30 days Limit password retrieval to the actual host group and keep SPN registration and host authorization correct
sMSA A compatible service running on one computer Managed service-account credential rather than an administrator-maintained reusable password It is not intended to be shared across multiple computers
dMSA Supported Windows Server 2025 scenarios, particularly migration from a traditional service account Machine-identity-linked managed account intended to reduce credential harvesting Confirm exact platform support and use a tested migration procedure before production rollout
Conventional domain user Only when the application cannot use an appropriate managed account Administrator- or process-managed reusable secret Give each service a unique identity, keep it out of privileged groups, and operate a reliable rotation process

The 240-byte and 30-day figures describe the behavior in Microsoft’s secure gMSA guidance, updated October 23, 2023. Verify applicable settings and platform behavior in the target environment rather than assuming every deployment has identical defaults.

When a gMSA is the right migration target

A gMSA is usually the strongest practical target when a service supports managed service accounts and runs on one or several Windows hosts. It provides a shared service identity without requiring administrators to distribute a reusable password. Define a narrowly scoped group of authorized hosts; a computer that does not run the service should not be able to retrieve its managed credential.

When to use an sMSA

Use an sMSA when the service is tied to one computer and the application supports it. Do not use an sMSA as a shortcut for a multi-server deployment. If the service later expands to additional hosts, reassess the design rather than copying credentials or weakening the host boundary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to evaluate dMSA

dMSA is associated with Windows Server 2025 and is intended to support migration from traditional service accounts while reducing credential-harvesting exposure. Confirm the exact Windows Server versions, application behavior, directory prerequisites, and documented migration sequence in a test environment. A dMSA project without a tested rollback path can turn a security improvement into an availability incident.

When a conventional account must remain

Some applications cannot consume a managed identity. In that case, create one account per service, use a long random secret that is not reused anywhere else, remove unnecessary group membership, and coordinate every rotation with the service owner and dependency owners. Microsoft Defender for Identity’s classic alert guidance recommends long, complex passwords for users with SPNs and replacing those identities with gMSAs where feasible.

Reduce what a service account can do

A strong secret does not compensate for excessive authorization. Review the account as if its credential will eventually be exposed.

Remove privilege that the service does not need

  • Remove membership in domain-wide or administrative groups unless a documented service requirement proves it necessary.
  • Replace broad delegated rights with permissions on the specific files, databases, queues, or APIs the service uses.
  • Separate identities for unrelated services so one cracked password cannot cross service boundaries.
  • Review local rights on every host, including service-logon rights, scheduled-task rights, and administrative membership.
  • Reassess access to sensitive resources and retain the review decision with the service owner.

Constrain managed-credential retrieval

For a gMSA, authorize only the computers that actually run the service to retrieve the managed password. Keep the host group small and review it whenever a server is added, retired, repurposed, or transferred to another environment. A gMSA lowers password-handling risk, but an incorrectly broad retrieval group expands the number of machines that could obtain the credential.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate production and nonproduction

Do not share one identity between production, test, and development unless the service architecture makes that unavoidable and the risk is explicitly accepted. Separate identities make ownership, permissions, logging, and incident response clearer and prevent a lower-trust environment from becoming a path to production access.

Harden conventional accounts that cannot be migrated

  1. Assign an owner and purpose. Record the exact service, hosts, SPNs, permissions, and dependency contacts. An account without an accountable owner should be treated as a cleanup candidate, not a permanent exception.
  2. Create a unique secret. Use a long, randomly generated password that is not used by another service or administrator. Store and retrieve it through the organization’s approved secret-management process rather than in scripts, tickets, or shared documents.
  3. Plan synchronized rotation. Coordinate the directory password change with the service configuration, connection pools, scheduled jobs, failover nodes, and any external dependency that authenticates with the account.
  4. Test the recovery path. Document how to restore the previous credential or disable the change if the service fails. Make sure the rollback procedure does not leave the old secret active longer than necessary.
  5. Review after every change. Confirm successful authentication, expected SPN use, resource access, and absence of unexpected logons from unapproved hosts.

Do not treat MFA as a direct fix for Kerberoasting. Service-ticket material is attacked offline, and many service identities cannot use the same interactive MFA controls as human accounts. Credential strength, identity type, least privilege, and encryption hygiene remain the relevant preventive measures.

Plan Kerberos encryption changes instead of guessing

Microsoft’s RC4 guidance explains that attackers can use Kerberos service-ticket material for offline cracking and that AES-SHA1 as the default helps reduce that risk. Microsoft states that updates released on or after November 8, 2022 changed the default for accounts without an explicit encryption setting to AES-SHA1. RC4 can still be used where compatibility or configuration permits.

Microsoft also described a plan to disable RC4 as the default assumed supported type for domain controllers by the end of the second quarter of 2026. That is a dated plan, not proof that every domain, controller, client, or application has completed the transition. On October 17, 2026, verify installed platform updates, domain-controller policy and defaults, account attributes, and observed authentication behavior in your environment rather than assuming universal completion.

Build an RC4 dependency list

  • Identify services, clients, appliances, and older operating systems that may not support AES-SHA1.
  • Check whether accounts have explicit encryption settings that override defaults.
  • Correlate authentication failures with the service owner and host after each test change.
  • Prioritize upgrades or replacements for RC4-only dependencies before tightening defaults.

Roll out encryption remediation safely

  1. Test representative application versions, failover paths, and client types in a nonproduction environment.
  2. Validate SPNs, DNS resolution, firewall and network paths, clock synchronization, and ticket lifetime and renewal settings.
  3. Change a small, observable group first and monitor authentication failures and service health.
  4. Expand in stages only after owners confirm normal operation.
  5. Keep a documented recovery action for each dependency; do not restore broad legacy support indefinitely without recording the risk decision.

Encryption changes are one layer of defense. An AES ticket encrypted for a highly privileged account with a weak or reused secret is still a serious exposure.

Run a service-account migration as a controlled change

Use this sequence for an sMSA, gMSA, or dMSA migration, and adapt it to the application’s supported procedure.

  1. Confirm support and ownership. Verify the Windows Server and application versions, identify every service instance, and obtain owner approval for a maintenance window.
  2. Map identity use. List SPNs, DNS aliases, host group membership, scheduled work, delegated access, local rights, and sensitive resources.
  3. Prepare the target identity. Create the managed identity or dMSA according to the supported platform process. For a gMSA, authorize only the computers that run the service.
  4. Register and validate SPNs. Ensure each required SPN is on the intended identity, remove duplicates only after confirming ownership, and verify that clients resolve the expected DNS name.
  5. Change the service configuration. Update every instance, failover node, scheduled task, and connection that uses the old identity. Do not leave a forgotten secondary host running with the former account.
  6. Test Kerberos operation. Check ticket acquisition, renewal, service authentication, resource access, and clock synchronization. Confirm firewall and network paths from every supported host.
  7. Observe before cleanup. Monitor authentication and service logs through a normal operating period. Keep the old identity disabled or tightly controlled according to the approved rollback plan, then remove obsolete SPNs and permissions.
  8. Document the final state. Record the owner, hosts, SPNs, permissions, encryption expectations, monitoring queries, rotation or managed-password behavior, and rollback decision.

Monitor for ticket abuse and account misuse

Monitoring helps find suspicious behavior; it does not replace managed identities, strong secrets, least privilege, or encryption remediation.

Signals worth investigating

  • Unexpected discovery or enumeration of service accounts and SPNs.
  • Unusual spikes or patterns of service-ticket requests for an account.
  • Authentication by a service identity from a host outside its approved service-host group.
  • Access to sensitive resources that is inconsistent with the service’s documented function.
  • Authentication failures immediately after a password, identity, or encryption change.
  • Activity from an account believed to be retired or unused.

Defender for Identity documents service-account discovery and classic alert guidance relevant to Kerberoasting investigations. Confirm current alert behavior, data retention, and licensing in your tenant before making it an operational dependency. Use the product as a detection layer alongside directory, service, host, and network logs.

Investigate in context

  1. Confirm whether the request came from an approved service host and expected application process.
  2. Check the account’s SPNs, group membership, delegated permissions, and recent configuration changes.
  3. Determine whether the pattern is a scheduled workload, failover event, deployment, or genuine anomaly.
  4. If compromise is plausible, follow the incident process for disabling or rotating the credential, removing unauthorized access, and preserving relevant logs.
  5. After containment, correct the underlying design issue instead of only suppressing the alert.

Common failure modes and recovery actions

The service stops after migration

Check that every instance uses the new identity, the target host is authorized to retrieve a managed password, required SPNs are registered on the new identity, and DNS, firewall, and clock conditions are correct. Confirm that the application supports the selected account type and required encryption.

Kerberos falls back or authentication fails

Review encryption compatibility on every participating system, explicit account settings, ticket renewal and lifetime assumptions, and platform update levels. Do not immediately re-enable broad RC4 support; identify the incompatible dependency and plan its remediation.

A gMSA works on one server but not another

Compare host authorization, service configuration, SPNs, DNS resolution, network paths, and time synchronization. The difference is often a missing host-group permission or an unregistered SPN on the second instance.

An old account still appears in alerts

Find remaining SPNs, scheduled tasks, services, delegated permissions, and scripts that reference it. Disable or retire the identity only after the owner confirms that all dependencies have moved, then remove stale directory objects and document the cleanup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintain the controls over time

  • Review service-account ownership, host scope, SPNs, group memberships, and sensitive access on a defined cadence.
  • Revalidate gMSA retrieval groups whenever infrastructure changes.
  • Track conventional-account password rotations and exceptions with an accountable owner.
  • Reassess RC4 dependencies after operating-system, application, or domain-controller updates.
  • Test failover, recovery, and rollback procedures instead of assuming the primary path represents every dependency.
  • Investigate unusual ticket requests and host locations as identity incidents, not merely configuration warnings.

Bottom line

The most durable Kerberoasting defense is a combination of identity design and operational discipline: inventory every SPN-bearing account, migrate compatible services to tightly scoped sMSAs or gMSAs, evaluate dMSA only in supported Windows Server 2025 scenarios, isolate services and remove privilege, protect exceptions with unique long secrets and coordinated rotation, and remediate RC4 dependencies through testing. Validate SPNs, DNS, network paths, clocks, ticket settings, and encryption support after every change, then use identity telemetry to detect behavior that does not fit the approved service design.
