Secure A2A communication by protecting the connection with HTTPS, authenticating callers at the HTTP boundary, and having the receiving server authorize every operation and limit the data it returns. A2A does not carry caller identity inside its JSON-RPC task payloads, nor does it prescribe one identity provider or authorization model. The Agent Card can advertise authentication requirements, but clients obtain credentials separately and send them through the appropriate HTTP mechanism.
What A2A security requires—and what it leaves to you
The A2A Protocol Specification describes agents as standard enterprise applications that rely on established web security practices. That distinction matters: A2A provides a way for agents to communicate, but it does not replace the deployment’s identity system or decide which authenticated caller may perform a particular action.
The specification’s core principle is straightforward: “A2A treats agents as standard enterprise applications, relying on established web security practices.” In practice, secure communication has three separate jobs:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Protect the connection: use HTTPS for production HTTP bindings and verify the remote server’s certificate.
- Authenticate the caller: validate credentials at the receiving server for each inbound request.
- Authorize the request and its results: decide whether the caller may perform the requested operation and ensure any data returned stays within that caller’s permitted access.
These are related but not interchangeable controls. Encryption protects traffic in transit; it does not, by itself, establish that a caller is permitted to use an agent. Authentication identifies the caller; it does not grant every authenticated caller unrestricted access. Authorization must be applied again when the server resolves resources and constructs a response.

How A2A authentication fits together
The Agent Card advertises requirements, not credentials
An Agent Card communicates information such as an agent’s identity, capabilities, skills, endpoint, and supported authentication requirements. A client can inspect the card to learn which authentication scheme the server supports. The card is a discovery mechanism, not a place to publish secret credential values.
The client obtains the credential through a separate, out-of-band process appropriate to the selected scheme. It then supplies that credential with the A2A request using the relevant HTTP mechanism. For example, bearer credentials are sent in an HTTP Authorization header. The identity information belongs at the transport or protocol layer; it should not be added as a caller-identity field in an A2A JSON-RPC task payload.
This separation also prevents a common design error: treating a discovered endpoint as an automatically trusted endpoint. Discovery tells a client how an agent describes itself and what authentication requirements it declares. It does not issue a credential, confirm that the client is entitled to use a skill, or select an authorization policy.
Credential acquisition is outside A2A’s universal flow
The protocol does not define a single credential-issuing flow that every deployment must use. The organization operating the agents must decide how clients establish their identity and obtain credentials, based on its existing trust boundaries and identity architecture. A client should use credentials appropriate to the authentication requirements advertised by the server rather than assume that discovering an endpoint grants access to it.
Keep the acquisition process separate from the A2A task exchange. The client first learns the supported scheme, completes the organization’s approved credential process, and then sends the resulting credential through the HTTP mechanism associated with that scheme. The receiving server validates it before treating the request as authenticated.
Protect sensitive Agent Cards
Some Agent Cards may expose information that should not be publicly discoverable. In that case, protect the endpoint that serves the card with controls appropriate to the deployment, such as authentication, network restrictions, or mutual TLS. Do not put plaintext secrets into a public card; the specification generally recommends that clients obtain dynamic credentials out of band.
Card protection is separate from request protection. A deployment can require access controls for the card while also requiring credentials on every A2A operation. Conversely, a card that is intentionally public still must not be treated as a source of secrets or as proof that the requesting client is authorized.
Secure the connection before trusting the endpoint
Use HTTPS and modern TLS
For production HTTP bindings, use HTTPS and configure a modern TLS setup. The current A2A specification recommends TLS 1.3 or later. This is protocol security guidance, not a guarantee that an individual deployment has been configured correctly.
HTTPS should cover the complete HTTP exchange used to retrieve the Agent Card and to send A2A requests. It protects credentials and task information while in transit, but it must be combined with application-layer authentication and authorization at the receiving server.

Validate the server certificate
During the TLS handshake, the client should validate the remote server’s certificate against trusted certificate authorities. An encrypted connection without certificate validation does not reliably establish that the client reached the intended agent. Treat endpoint identity verification as part of securing the connection, not as an optional substitute for authentication checks at the application boundary.
Certificate validation addresses the server side of the connection. It does not identify the calling workload or user to the A2A server. That caller identity still comes from the credential supplied through the selected HTTP authentication mechanism and validated by the receiving server.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Authenticate each inbound request at the server
The receiving A2A server is responsible for authenticating callers. Validate the supplied credentials at the receiving boundary for every inbound request, then bind the resulting authenticated identity to the authorization context used to evaluate that request. Do not treat a client’s claim about its own identity, or an identifier included in task data, as proof of identity.
- Read the server’s declared authentication requirements. The client uses the Agent Card to discover supported schemes; the card itself does not supply a secret.
- Obtain credentials through the deployment’s approved out-of-band process. The issuing and acquisition flow is not standardized as one universal A2A procedure.
- Send credentials through the selected HTTP mechanism. Use the mechanism associated with the scheme, such as an Authorization header for bearer credentials, rather than embedding secrets in JSON-RPC task content.
- Validate credentials on receipt. The server establishes the caller’s authenticated identity before making an authorization decision.
- Evaluate the requested operation and resources. Use the identity with the deployment’s policy inputs, which may include a requested skill, attempted action, data policy, and OAuth scopes.
- Return only authorized results. Apply the same boundary when resolving a single task or producing a collection of tasks or other resources.
- Reject unauthenticated or unauthorized work. Do not continue as though a caller were authenticated when its credential is absent, invalid, or unacceptable under the deployment’s requirements.
The final rejection behavior is an implementation responsibility; the protocol guidance places authentication at the server rather than prescribing a universal credential acquisition flow for all deployments. In a multi-agent path, each receiving server remains responsible for authenticating the request it receives and making its own authorization decision; an upstream agent’s decision should not be assumed to replace that check.
Authorize operations and returned data separately
Authentication answers who is making a request. Authorization answers whether that caller may perform the requested operation and access the relevant information. The A2A specification leaves the policy model implementation-specific. It identifies possible policy inputs such as the requested skill, attempted action, relevant data policy, and OAuth scopes, and advises least privilege.
Check the operation, not just the identity
Make an authorization decision for each protocol operation. A caller that is allowed to invoke one skill or action should not automatically inherit permission to invoke every other skill or action exposed by the same agent. Map permissions to the operations the deployment actually intends to make available, using its own policy model.
For example, an authenticated workload can be recognized as a valid caller while still being denied a requested skill, action, or data set. The credential proves the identity accepted by the server; the policy determines whether that identity, with its applicable scopes and other conditions, may perform the particular operation.
Constrain resources and results
Authorization must also constrain which tasks or other resources a caller can access. The current repository specification requires authorization checks for protocol operations and requires results to remain within the caller’s authorized access boundaries. Apply those checks when a caller requests an individual resource and when an operation can return multiple resources, such as listing or retrieving tasks where applicable.
Do not rely only on client-supplied task identifiers, context, or filters to enforce access boundaries. A filter can narrow a request, but it is not proof that the caller is entitled to the matching records. Check access on the server, including when a request omits a context or filter, and limit returned results to resources the authenticated caller may access.

When a request asks for a collection, authorization applies to the collection operation and to each result that would be exposed. When a request names one task or resource, the identifier is a lookup input, not an authorization decision. The server must resolve it within the caller’s permitted boundary and avoid returning information merely because the identifier is valid.
Apply least privilege at every boundary
Grant only the access needed for the caller’s intended work. Consider identity, requested skill, action, relevant data policy, and any applicable OAuth scopes together rather than treating possession of a valid credential as blanket permission. The protocol does not prescribe a universal roles or scopes design, so the mapping among identities, skills, actions, and data must be defined by the deployment.
Least privilege should therefore be visible in both the operation policy and the result policy. A caller may be permitted to start a task but not inspect every task, or to use one skill without access to data handled by another. The exact boundaries depend on the deployment, but the server—not the client—must enforce them.
Choosing an authentication approach
A2A’s enterprise guidance points to established web mechanisms, particularly OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect. They are compatible approaches, not mandatory choices for every agent deployment, and the reviewed official guidance does not identify a universally best scheme. Select an approach that fits the identity system and trust boundaries of the agents and clients involved.
Use these questions to evaluate candidate schemes; they are implementation decisions, not protocol-mandated rankings:
Recommended Free Tools
- Issuance and acquisition: Who issues the credential, and how does a client obtain it out of band?
- Transmission and protection: How does the credential travel with a request, and how is it protected in transit?
- Identity represented: Does the deployment need to identify a user, a workload, or both?
- Authorization mapping: How do permissions or scopes map to skills, attempted actions, and protected data?
- Credential lifecycle: How will credentials be rotated or revoked in the deployment?
Answer these questions in the context of your own identity provider and trust boundaries. Do not infer that an Agent Card’s declaration chooses an authorization policy for you; it advertises authentication requirements, while the receiving server makes the access decisions.
OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect can fit enterprise identity architectures, but adopting either does not remove the need to define resource boundaries or operation-level permissions. A deployment still has to decide whether its policy distinguishes users from workloads, how scopes correspond to skills and actions, and how credentials are obtained and managed outside the A2A exchange.
A practical request-to-response security sequence
A useful review follows the request in order:
- Discover the agent. The client obtains the Agent Card through the deployment’s permitted discovery path and reads the declared endpoint, capabilities, skills, and authentication requirements.
- Verify the connection. The client connects over HTTPS, uses a modern TLS configuration, and validates the server certificate against trusted certificate authorities.
- Acquire a credential. The client completes the approved out-of-band process for the selected scheme. No secret is copied from the card.
- Construct the HTTP request. The credential is transmitted using the relevant HTTP mechanism, while task content remains free of caller-identity claims and secret values.
- Authenticate at receipt. The receiving server validates the credential and binds the accepted identity to the request.
- Authorize the operation. The server evaluates the requested skill or action, applicable policy, and any OAuth scopes or other deployment-defined inputs.
- Authorize the data. Before returning a task, resource, or collection, the server confirms that each result lies within the caller’s access boundary, including when context or filters are missing.
This sequence keeps discovery, transport security, authentication, and authorization distinct. A failure in one stage should not be silently converted into success at a later stage.

Common security mistakes to avoid
Treating HTTPS as caller authentication
HTTPS protects the connection and certificate validation helps the client verify the server endpoint. Neither step replaces the receiving server’s responsibility to authenticate the caller and authorize the requested operation.
Putting identity or secrets in task payloads
A2A identity is handled at the transport or protocol layer rather than as a field in the JSON-RPC task payload. Publishing secret values in an Agent Card is also unsafe; clients should acquire credentials out of band and provide them with requests using the appropriate HTTP mechanism.
Assuming a valid credential grants broad access
Successful authentication establishes an identity, not unlimited authority. Apply least privilege to operations and returned data, and do not assume a permission for one skill or action applies to the rest of the agent.
Trusting filters or identifiers supplied by the client
Client-supplied task identifiers and filters describe what the client is requesting; they do not establish entitlement. The server must enforce the caller’s resource boundary when resolving the request and constraining results, including when context or filters are absent.

Making the Agent Card a secret store
An Agent Card can describe supported authentication requirements, but it should not contain plaintext credential values. If the card itself exposes sensitive information, protect the card endpoint with authentication, network restrictions, mutual TLS, or another control suitable for its exposure.
Assuming one policy works for every deployment
A2A does not prescribe one identity provider, role model, scope vocabulary, token audience design, gateway placement, or credential lifecycle. Reusing a policy without checking the deployment’s users, workloads, skills, actions, and data boundaries can create permissions that are broader than intended.
What the protocol does not decide
The exact A2A specification and repository evolve, so implementers should verify the version used by their deployment before relying on version-sensitive details. The established guidance described here covers transport protection, Agent Card authentication discovery, server-side authentication, and authorization boundaries. It does not settle every deployment architecture, such as token audience design, credential rotation procedures, or where to place a gateway. Treat those as design decisions for the system rather than universal A2A requirements.
Likewise, OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect are relevant enterprise mechanisms, not a requirement to adopt one specific identity vendor or policy design. The deployment remains responsible for selecting a scheme, defining how credentials are obtained, and making access decisions that match its users, workloads, skills, actions, and protected data.

What does an Agent Card do for authentication?
It advertises the authentication schemes and requirements supported by the server, along with the agent’s identity, endpoint, capabilities, and skills. Clients still acquire credentials through an out-of-band process; the card is not a secret store.
Is HTTPS enough to secure an A2A deployment?
No. Use HTTPS with modern TLS, preferably TLS 1.3 or later as recommended by the current specification, and validate the server certificate. The receiving server must still authenticate every caller and authorize every operation and result.
Who makes the authorization decision?
The receiving A2A server. It can use the authenticated identity, requested skill, attempted action, relevant data policy, OAuth scopes, and other deployment-defined inputs. A2A does not impose one universal roles or scopes model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShould a server authorize task listings and task retrieval separately?
Apply authorization to both the operation and the resources returned. A valid task identifier or client-supplied filter does not prove entitlement. Results must remain within the caller’s authorized boundary, including when context or filters are omitted.
Are OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect mandatory for A2A?
No. Enterprise guidance points to them as compatible established web mechanisms, but neither is required for every deployment. Choose an approach that fits the deployment’s identity system and trust boundaries.
Can a public Agent Card contain a token or password?
No. Do not publish plaintext secrets in a card. Use dynamic, out-of-band credential acquisition, and protect the card endpoint itself when its information is sensitive.
What should an implementation team decide outside the protocol?
Define credential issuance and acquisition, whether user or workload identity is needed, how permissions map to skills, actions, and data, how credentials are rotated or revoked, and how deployment-specific boundaries are enforced. Token audience design and gateway placement are also deployment choices rather than universal A2A requirements.
