To secure a YouTube channel, protect every Google Account with access to it: use a unique password, turn on two-step verification, choose a passkey where available, and give collaborators channel permissions instead of sharing your sign-in. If you suspect a takeover, recover and secure the associated Google Account first, then remove unauthorized changes and review channel access.
Why YouTube channel security starts with Google Accounts
A YouTube channel is associated with at least one Google Account. YouTube says a hacked channel means at least one associated Google Account has been compromised. That makes the owner’s account—and the accounts of every authorized manager or collaborator—part of the channel’s security boundary. YouTube’s hacked-channel recovery guidance explains this connection.
How to prevent your YouTube channel from being hacked
Strengthen sign-in and recovery
- Use a strong, unique password for the Google Account associated with the channel. Do not reuse it on other services.
- Turn on two-step verification. YouTube identifies passkeys—verified with a fingerprint, face scan, or device screen lock—as its strongest option against phishing. It also identifies physical security keys as a strong phishing-protection method. Other listed options include Google prompts, Google Authenticator, phone verification codes, and backup codes; phone codes and backup codes are less secure alternatives, not protection-free options. - Add and keep current a recovery phone number and email address so Google can alert you to suspicious activity and help restore access.
- Consider using a separate email address for the channel account rather than one used across unrelated services. This can reduce exposure if another service is compromised.
Recognize phishing and malware lures
Phishing can arrive by email, text, phone call, or a webpage that impersonates a trusted company, client, or colleague. Creator-targeted lures may be framed as sponsorship requests, marketing help, free cryptocurrency, encrypted files, thumbnail templates, or premium editing software. Verify a sponsorship through a public company contact or someone you already know, and do not open unexpected files or install software from an untrusted source.

How to give collaborators access safely
Do not share the owner’s Google password with an editor, agency, sponsor, or manager. YouTube channel permissions let collaborators work on the channel without access to the owner’s Google Account. Choose the least powerful role that supports the person’s work, review who has access, and remove people who no longer need it. YouTube’s creator guidance lists roles including Manager, Editor, Editor (limited), Viewer, and Viewer (limited); capabilities differ, including whether a role can change channel details or see revenue information. Check the current role descriptions in YouTube Studio before assigning access because capabilities can change.
Brand Account access is a separate route to check. YouTube says Brand Account roles can grant access to both the Google Account and channel, and owner and manager roles can upload videos and make changes. Review those roles carefully as well as channel permissions, and remove any unrecognized account. YouTube’s creator safety page covers permissions and Brand Accounts.

How to tell if your YouTube channel was hacked
Investigate immediately if you notice changes you did not make, such as:

- A changed profile picture, channel description, or other channel details.
- Unexpected changes to email settings or the channel’s AdSense association.
- Messages sent from your account that you did not write.
- Videos uploaded without your permission, or existing videos whose privacy settings were changed so they are hidden.
These signs can indicate a compromised account or unauthorized channel access. Review the associated Google Account and the channel’s permissions rather than treating a single unexplained change as an isolated settings issue. YouTube lists these indicators in its hacked-channel recovery guide and channel cleanup instructions.

What to do if your YouTube channel was hacked
- Recover and secure the associated Google Account. If you can sign in, change the password and secure the account. If you cannot, use Google’s account-recovery process and answer the ownership questions as accurately as possible. Ask other channel owners and managers to secure their own accounts, too.
- Reverse unauthorized channel changes promptly. Remove unauthorized uploads when appropriate and restore channel details and settings. YouTube advises acting quickly to reverse changes to avoid potential policy consequences.
- Audit channel activity and access. YouTube’s Studio cleanup tool is available to channel owners and managers; it lists unusual activity and can suggest corrections. Review uploads, users, branding, video visibility, comments, playlists, thumbnails, subscriptions, and AdSense or Content Manager settings where relevant. The cleanup tool is described at YouTube’s hacked-channel cleanup page.
- Close other access paths. Turn on two-step verification, add recovery options, remove unknown users and unnecessary connected apps, and ensure collaborators are not sharing credentials.
- Contact Creator Support if eligible. YouTube says creators who have recovered their Google Account may contact Creator Support if eligible. Its recovery page limits support for potential hacking incidents to those from the past nine months because of data-retention limits; check the current eligibility details on YouTube’s recovery page.
Recovering the Google Account does not by itself establish that every attacker or unauthorized access path has been removed. Complete the channel and access review before treating the incident as resolved.
