Secure a Windows WebDAV connection by using HTTPS with a certificate that matches the server name, avoiding Basic authentication over HTTP, limiting which servers receive forwarded credentials, and restricting access on the server. Windows’ WebDAV redirector relies on the WebClient service; leave it enabled only if the computer needs WebDAV access.
Use HTTPS and the hostname on the certificate
Connect to the server’s HTTPS address and use a hostname covered by its TLS certificate. A certificate name mismatch can trigger a certificate-selection prompt when mapping a drive. Check that the address is correct, then ask the server administrator to correct the certificate or provide the right hostname. Do not bypass certificate validation to make the connection work.
Microsoft’s WebDAV Redirector documentation warns that Basic credentials can be transmitted in clear text. It says Basic authentication is disabled by default unless the connection uses SSL. Do not change the redirector’s registry configuration to permit Basic authentication over a non-SSL connection; Microsoft strongly discourages overriding that protection.
Handle authentication and credential forwarding cautiously
If Windows does not send credentials to an intranet server, do not treat a broad credential-forwarding rule as a general fix. Microsoft explains that the WebDAV redirector uses WinHTTP and that the AuthForwardServerList setting controls which matching servers may receive forwarded credentials. A broad wildcard can match more hosts than intended, including internet servers.

If an administrator confirms that a forwarding exception is needed, identify the exact server as narrowly as possible and verify the applicable Windows version and policy environment before changing the registry. Microsoft’s Windows Client troubleshooting guidance says to create the list as restrictively as possible.
Restrict access on the WebDAV server
Client-side transport and credential settings do not replace server-side access controls. For IIS, ask the administrator to review WebDAV authoring rules, which can define allowed users or groups, paths, and permissions. These rules are separate from ordinary URL authorization. Grant only the access required and check whether anonymous listing or authoring is enabled in the deployment.

IIS’s WebDAV authoring configuration reference includes a requireSsl setting. Verify the actual server configuration rather than assuming an example or default ensures HTTPS.
Keep WebClient enabled only when WebDAV is needed
The Windows WebDAV redirector uses the WebClient service. If the computer needs WebDAV shares, the service must be available; stopping it prevents that client from accessing those shares. If the organization does not use WebDAV on the computer, an administrator may consider disabling WebClient after checking current system applicability and operational requirements.

Troubleshoot a failed or prompted connection
- Certificate-selection prompt over HTTPS: Check whether the hostname in the address matches the certificate. Use the correct hostname or have the server certificate corrected; do not ignore validation.
- Authentication failure: Check whether the server has authentication configured and whether the account can access the requested content. A failure alone is not a reason to loosen credential-forwarding rules.
- Mapping failure: Check whether WebClient is running and whether WebDAV is enabled and configured on the server.
- Registry or policy change under consideration: Confirm the target Windows version and organizational policy before applying version-sensitive instructions.
