The safest UGREEN NAS is not reachable from the public internet unless you genuinely need remote access. Leave remote access, unused services, UPnP mappings, and unnecessary Docker ports disabled; if you need access away from home, prefer a narrowly scoped method, protect every account that controls it with unique credentials and OTP two-factor authentication, keep UGOS and applications updated, and maintain an independent backup that you have actually restored.

UGREEN’s security guide dated April 28, 2025 and its remote-access guide dated April 17, 2026 support that baseline. The practical choice is usually local-only access or UGREENlink. Tailscale can provide a private network on compatible Docker-capable models. DDNS with port forwarding is an advanced, directly exposed design that demands careful router, certificate, firewall, and monitoring work.

Start with the least-exposed access method

Decide whether the NAS needs to be reachable while you are away. A household NAS used only from computers and phones on the home network does not need a remote-access service. Turn off remote access and services you do not use, then secure the router and local network. This removes an entire class of internet-facing failure modes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If remote use is necessary, compare the choices by setup effort, public exposure, prerequisites, and how quickly you can revoke access. UGREEN’s remote-access documentation describes three paths in addition to local-only use:

Method Best fit Exposure and prerequisites Revocation
Local only Files are needed only at home No remote endpoint; disable unused remote services, forwards, and mappings Keep remote services disabled and remove any old router rules
UGREENlink Typical home user who wants the built-in route Uses the UGREEN service without broad manual router port forwarding; requires current UGOS and a UGREEN account, plus protected NAS credentials and trusted-device controls Disable UGREENlink and review sessions, accounts, and trusted devices
Tailscale People who want a private network between approved devices Normally avoids an inbound port forward; requires a compatible Docker-capable NAS, a Tailscale account and clients, and a correctly configured container. UGREEN says the DH2300 cannot run this container because it lacks Docker Remove or disable the device and container in the private network, then revoke account sessions
DDNS plus narrowly scoped forwarding Advanced users who need a direct domain or endpoint Requires router control, a reachable public address, a reserved NAS LAN address, minimal port-forward rules, HTTPS with a matching certificate, and active monitoring. CGNAT or double NAT can prevent ordinary forwarding Delete forwarding rules, disable DDNS, revoke certificates and credentials, and remove the service exposure

DDNS is only a name-resolution mechanism. It does not encrypt traffic or secure the application behind the name. A domain that resolves to your home connection is still a public route to whatever your router forwards.

Build a secure account model before enabling remote access

Keep administration separate from everyday use

Retain one administrator account for system changes, updates, firewall rules, applications, and containers. Give each person a separate standard account for normal file access. Remove administrator rights from accounts that do not need them, disable old accounts, and grant only the folders and operations each user requires. Shared administrator logins make it difficult to identify who changed a rule and increase the damage caused by one exposed password.

Use unique credentials everywhere

Create a long, unique password or passphrase for every administrator account. Do not reuse it for the UGREEN account, email, router, DDNS provider, Tailscale, backup system, cloud account, or an application running on the NAS. UGREEN recommends using a password manager to store these credentials. Protect the password manager itself with a separate strong password and multi-factor authentication where available.

Enable OTP two-factor authentication and protect recovery

Enable the available time-based one-time-password (OTP) two-factor authentication for the NAS account. Confirm that the NAS synchronizes its clock automatically; UGREEN notes that clock drift can cause valid codes to be rejected. Add a secure recovery email that you control and protect that email account with its own unique credentials and two-factor authentication.

UGREEN’s August 24, 2026 system update plan lists enforcing OTP at account sign-in as a planned feature. That wording does not establish that mandatory enforcement has already shipped, so configure OTP on each relevant account yourself and verify the controls in the installed UGOS release.

Audit trusted devices and login activity

Review the NAS list of trusted devices regularly. Revoke devices that were lost, sold, shared, replaced, or are no longer used. Never mark a public or shared computer as trusted. Examine successful and failed logins, unfamiliar IP addresses, account creation or privilege changes, administrator actions, newly installed applications or containers, and changes to remote-access or firewall settings. Apply the same review to the UGREEN account, router, DDNS account, Tailscale account, backup service, and applications that can control the NAS.

Use UGREENlink when the built-in path is enough

UGREENlink is the simplest remote option presented in UGREEN’s April 17, 2026 guide because it does not require broad manual router port forwarding. It still depends on the security of your UGREEN account, NAS accounts, trusted devices, and recovery methods; convenience is not a substitute for those controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update first. Confirm that the NAS is running a supported, current UGOS release and that the UGREEN account has a unique password and OTP protection.
  2. Enable only the service you need. In UGOS, open the remote-access area, select UGREENlink, and follow the account-pairing prompts shown by your installed version. Labels can change between releases, so use the wording displayed on the NAS rather than an old screenshot.
  3. Protect each client. Sign in only from devices with current operating-system updates, screen locks, and malware protection. Do not trust a public computer, and remove a device from the trusted list when it leaves your control.
  4. Test from outside the home network. Use a cellular connection or another network, not the same Wi-Fi, and verify that you can reach only the intended files or application. Confirm that the certificate is valid and that the session ends when you sign out.
  5. Revoke access when it is not needed. Disable UGREENlink, remove stale trusted devices, terminate unknown sessions, and review login history. This is safer than leaving the service enabled indefinitely for occasional trips.

UGREEN states that UGREENlink applies a certificate to its remote connection. You should still stop if a client displays a certificate warning, and you should investigate any unexpected login or device prompt rather than approving it.

Use Tailscale only when your model and container setup support it

Tailscale creates a private network among enrolled devices instead of asking you to publish the NAS service through a normal inbound router port. It is not a built-in UGREEN service, and it is not suitable for every model. UGREEN says the DH2300 cannot run the required container because that model lacks Docker.

Check the prerequisites

  • The NAS model must support Docker and have enough resources for the container and your normal workloads.
  • You need a Tailscale account and client software on each approved computer or phone.
  • The container must be configured with the least privilege and only the routes and services you intend to use.
  • Every Tailscale account and enrolled device must be protected with strong, unique credentials and current two-factor authentication.

Keep the private network private

Do not treat membership in a private overlay as permission for every user or every NAS service. Enroll only devices you control, remove retired devices promptly, and limit who can reach administrative interfaces. Keep the NAS firewall enabled and allow only the ports required by the container and the applications you actually use. Review the container after UGOS, Docker, or application updates because a changed configuration can broaden access.

Treat DDNS and port forwarding as an advanced exposure

Choose DDNS only when you understand why a direct endpoint is necessary and can maintain it. The path is more than registering a hostname: it creates a route from the internet to your home network and requires continuous monitoring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the address path. Determine whether your internet provider gives you a reachable public IPv4 address. CGNAT and double NAT can block ordinary forwarding; if there are two routers, identify which one owns the public address and avoid creating duplicate or overly broad rules.
  2. Reserve the NAS LAN address. Use a DHCP reservation or equivalent so a forwarding rule cannot point to a different device after a lease changes.
  3. Forward the smallest possible scope. Permit only the specific application port required by the remote service. Do not forward the NAS management interface, SMB, NFS, or SSH. Disable UPnP so applications cannot silently create additional mappings.
  4. Use HTTPS correctly. Obtain a valid certificate whose name matches the DDNS hostname, assign it to the intended service, track its expiry, renew it, and test renewal before it becomes urgent. Never instruct users to click through certificate warnings.
  5. Restrict and monitor. Use the NAS firewall and router firewall to limit source networks or devices where practical. Check logs for failed logins, unfamiliar addresses, new accounts, rule changes, and unexpected applications. Test from a genuinely external network.
  6. Have a shutdown plan. Know exactly which DDNS setting, certificate, port-forward rule, and NAS service to disable if an account is compromised or the service is no longer needed.

Plain HTTP WebDAV should not be exposed to the internet. HTTPS protects traffic between a client and a service; it does not encrypt files at rest on the NAS, and it does not make an over-privileged account safe.

Never publish these NAS services directly

UGREEN’s security guidance is explicit: Do not expose SMB, NFS, SSH, or the UGOS management interface directly to the internet. These protocols are valuable inside a controlled network but become high-impact targets when reachable from arbitrary hosts.

Service Safer approach
UGOS management interface Keep it LAN-only or reachable through a private access method; administer from a trusted, updated device
SMB file sharing Use it on the home network or through an approved private network, never a public port forward
NFS Restrict it to required local hosts or a private network with explicit device controls
SSH Disable it when not needed; if administration requires it, keep it off the public internet and restrict accounts and keys
WebDAV over plain HTTP Do not publish it; use a service with HTTPS and a valid matching certificate

Harden the router, firewall, IPv4, and IPv6

Remove accidental paths

Disable NAS services, router forwards, UPnP mappings, and Docker-published ports that are not required. Keep the NAS firewall enabled and write narrow rules for the exact service, source, and destination needed. Multi-port and link-aggregation configurations can affect which firewall rule applies; test the actual path instead of assuming a rule covers every interface.

Check both IP versions

An empty IPv4 port-forward list does not prove that the NAS is unreachable. A router may give the NAS a globally reachable IPv6 address. Review the router’s IPv6 firewall for unsolicited inbound traffic and block it unless you have deliberately designed and documented an IPv6 service. Repeat the check after router, NAS, or network changes.

Secure the router and segments

  • Install current router firmware.
  • Replace the router’s default administrator password with a unique one.
  • Disable remote administration of the router unless it is required and tightly restricted.
  • Delete old forwarding rules and unknown UPnP mappings.
  • Put guest and IoT devices on an isolated guest network or VLAN where your equipment supports it.
  • Allow only the specific media or application traffic that an IoT device needs; do not grant general access to NAS management.

Keep UGOS, applications, and containers current

Use UGOS’s Control Panel update function for the operating system, then check the App Center and Docker applications separately. An up-to-date OS does not automatically update every container or application. Before installing a significant update, confirm that important data has a current independent backup and that you know how to recover if an application configuration changes.

UGREEN’s security guide includes version-specific controls, including security settings from UGOS 1.10.0.0092 onward and PC-client log notifications on firmware 1.16.0.0042 and later. Treat those thresholds and menu paths as release-specific: compare them with the version installed on your NAS rather than assuming an older interface has the same options.

The August 24, 2026 update plan is a roadmap, not a guarantee. UGREEN warns that planned features can change. Its mention of OTP enforcement or custom security whitelists should not be read as proof that those features are already available in your release. Check the actual release notes and the controls displayed by UGOS.

Check model support before relying on updates

Consult UGREEN’s current Products Support Status page for the exact model. UGREEN says it maintains a list of products without ongoing software support and may still issue necessary fixes for critical security issues on devices outside ongoing support. That is a vendor caveat, not a promise of routine updates, so an unsupported model should not be given an unnecessary public role.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Use scanning and notifications as additional controls

The Security app’s real-time protection can scan suspicious files stored on or passing through the NAS. UGREEN says this does not replace endpoint security on the computers that open those files. Keep operating-system protection and application updates enabled on every client, especially computers that synchronize or preview NAS content.

UGREEN says its PC client can issue notifications based on log events on firmware 1.16.0.0042 and later. The guide describes filters by keyword, severity, module, or user. Configure alerts for failed and successful logins, administrator changes, new users, installed applications or containers, firewall and remote-access changes, and unusual file activity where your version exposes those events. Verify the minimum firmware and menu path against your installed release, and make sure notifications reach an account you actually monitor.

Backups are part of NAS security

A secure login cannot recover files that were deleted, encrypted, or corrupted. Keep at least one independent backup with credentials separate from the NAS administrator account. Store it in a way that an attacker who controls the NAS cannot automatically erase, and test restoration rather than merely checking that a backup job reports success.

  • Use a backup destination that is not permanently writable by the NAS administrator account.
  • Protect backup credentials separately and do not reuse the NAS password.
  • Retain versions so an unnoticed encryption or deletion event is not copied immediately over every good copy.
  • Perform a test restore of representative files and document the steps, permissions, and application dependencies.
  • Review backup status after UGOS, application, router, or credential changes.

RAID improves availability when a drive fails; it is not an independent backup. The NAS security scanner can detect suspicious files; it cannot restore a clean historical version after an account compromise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you think the NAS is already exposed or compromised

Do not begin by factory-resetting the device. Preserve evidence and follow a controlled shutdown and recovery sequence:

  1. Cut the public path. Remove router port forwards and disable unnecessary UPnP mappings. Turn off the affected DDNS or remote-access feature. If an active compromise appears likely, disconnect the NAS from the network while preserving its local state.
  2. Preserve and review logs. Before clearing anything, inspect login history, account changes, administrator actions, firewall events, unfamiliar IP addresses, trusted devices, applications, containers, and recently changed remote-access rules.
  3. Revoke unknown access. Terminate unfamiliar sessions, remove unrecognized trusted devices, and disable accounts you did not create. From a known-clean computer, rotate potentially exposed NAS, UGREEN, router, DDNS, Tailscale, backup, and application credentials.
  4. Patch and scan. Update UGOS and installed applications, then run the available security scan. Recheck firewall and router settings after the updates because a service may have recreated a mapping.
  5. Protect the data before restoring normal use. If files were encrypted, deleted, or renamed, stop ordinary NAS activity before attempting to restore or resynchronize data. Preserve the unaffected backup and avoid copying damaged state over the last good version.
  6. Re-enable only what you can monitor. Restore remote access only after the review, with the smallest necessary scope, fresh credentials, OTP protection, valid certificates, and alerting.

A practical secure baseline to audit

For most households, the defensible baseline is local-only access, no unused services, a separate standard account for each person, one protected administrator account, unique passwords stored in a password manager, OTP enabled, trusted devices and login logs reviewed, current UGOS and applications, a narrow firewall, no public SMB/NFS/SSH/management ports, IPv4 and IPv6 checked, and an independent backup with a verified restore.

If you need access away from home, start with UGREENlink. Choose Tailscale only when your model supports Docker and you are comfortable managing a private device network. Use DDNS and forwarding only when you can maintain certificates, router and NAS firewalls, monitoring, and a tested shutdown plan. This approach follows UGREEN’s documented security advice while keeping the internet-facing surface as small as your actual use case allows.
