Secure a smart door lock camera as two devices at once: an internet-connected camera and an access-control system. Start with a unique manufacturer-account password and two-factor authentication, update the lock, camera and app, harden your Wi-Fi router, remove unnecessary users, and limit remote viewing or unlocking. Then inspect recording, cloud-storage and sharing settings so you know exactly who can see your entryway and how long footage remains available.

What you are protecting

A camera-equipped smart lock creates two different security problems that overlap but are not identical. The camera can expose live views, recorded clips, audio, visitor information and account details. The lock can affect physical entry if its authentication, wireless communication, access codes or shared permissions are abused.

Protecting one layer does not automatically protect the other. A strong Wi-Fi password cannot fix an account with a reused password, and private camera recordings do not compensate for an access code that was never revoked. Evaluate the complete path: your manufacturer account, phone app, cloud service, home network, lock firmware, camera settings and every person or service with permission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do these first: a priority checklist

  1. Replace default or reused credentials. Create a long, unique password for the lock-camera manufacturer account. Do not reuse your email, router or smart-home password.
  2. Turn on two-factor authentication. Use the strongest method the service offers and save recovery codes somewhere secure.
  3. Update everything. Install current lock and camera firmware and update the viewing app. Enable automatic security updates when the manufacturer supports them.
  4. Harden the router. Change the router administrator password, install router updates and use WPA2 or WPA3 Wi-Fi security rather than an obsolete or open mode.
  5. Separate the device network. Put the lock-camera and other less-trusted IoT devices on a guest or dedicated network if your router supports it and the lock still works as intended there.
  6. Audit access. Remove former household members, contractors, guests and old phones. Check permission levels and access logs where available.
  7. Reduce exposure. Disable remote viewing, remote unlocking, recording, microphone access or other features you do not need.
  8. Review data handling. Confirm what is recorded, where clips are stored, how long they are retained, who can retrieve them and what the privacy policy permits.

Step 1: Lock down the manufacturer account

Use a unique password

The account controlling the lock-camera is the highest-value target because it may grant both video access and control over users or entry credentials. Generate a unique password with a password manager. Never leave a setup password, printed default credential or reused password in place.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the service lets you sign in with another account, secure that identity too. An attacker who takes over the email address or single-sign-on account connected to the lock may be able to reset the device account even when the lock itself has a different password.

Enable two-factor authentication

Open the manufacturer app or web account, then look under a label such as Account, Security, Login and security or Two-step verification. Choose an authenticator app or hardware security key when offered; text-message codes are still preferable to no second factor. Store recovery codes offline and update the recovery phone number or email if either changes.

Two-factor authentication protects sign-in, not every action after a session is already active. Sign out old sessions, review remembered devices and require reauthentication for sensitive changes if the service provides that option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check account notifications

Enable alerts for new logins, password changes, new users, access-code changes and remote unlocks. A notification is useful only if it reaches an account you monitor. Treat an unexpected alert as an incident, not as harmless background activity.

Step 2: Update the lock, camera and app

Security fixes can arrive separately for the lock firmware, camera firmware, hub or bridge, mobile application and cloud account. Check each component rather than assuming an app update also updates the door hardware.

  1. Open the app’s device page and look for Firmware, Device update or Software version.
  2. Install the newest release while the lock has reliable power and the phone is on the correct home network. Do not remove batteries or interrupt power during an update.
  3. Open your phone’s app store and install the current viewing and control app.
  4. Turn on automatic updates for the app and device if the manufacturer supports them. If updates are manual, set a recurring calendar reminder.
  5. After updating, verify that remote viewing, notifications, user permissions and access codes still match your intended settings.

Updates address known bugs, but they can also reset or add controls. Recheck privacy and sharing settings after every firmware, app or account change.

Step 3: Secure the home network

Harden the router

  • Change the router administrator username or password from its factory value.
  • Install the router’s current firmware and enable automatic updates if available.
  • Use WPA2 or WPA3 encryption with a strong Wi-Fi passphrase. Do not use an open network or an obsolete encryption mode.
  • Disable remote router administration unless you genuinely need it; if it must remain enabled, restrict it to a trusted method and protect it with multi-factor authentication when offered.
  • Give visitors a guest network instead of your primary network.

Consider a separate IoT network

A guest or IoT network can reduce the camera’s ability to reach computers, phones and storage on your primary network if another connected device is compromised. This is a containment measure, not a substitute for account security. Some locks require local discovery, a hub or a particular Wi-Fi band; test locking, live view, notifications and firmware updates after moving the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that a guest network blocks all cloud access. The lock may still communicate with the manufacturer’s servers, and your phone may need to switch networks to configure it. Document the network name and any exceptions so you can troubleshoot later without weakening the whole network.

Step 4: Configure camera privacy and storage

Inspect recording behavior

Find the camera’s Recording, Event history, Cloud storage or Privacy menu. Determine whether the device records continuously, only on motion, only when the doorbell or lock is used, or only when you manually save a clip. Identify whether audio is captured with video and whether recordings are stored locally, in the cloud or in both places.

Set the shortest retention period that meets your needs. Delete old clips and disable continuous recording when event-based recording is sufficient. If the app offers a privacy mask or activity zone, exclude neighboring doors, windows, bedrooms and public areas that do not need monitoring.

Check encryption claims carefully

Look for separate explanations of encryption for account data, live feeds, stored clips and lock-to-app communications. A statement that one connection is encrypted does not prove that every recording, API request or local Bluetooth exchange receives the same protection. If the documentation does not identify a data path, treat that feature as unverified rather than assuming it is protected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Limit remote viewing

Remote viewing increases convenience and exposure. If you only need the camera while at home, disable remote access or set it to a local-only mode. If you need remote access, keep two-factor authentication enabled, use app notifications for new sign-ins and remove old phones from the authorized-device list.

Step 5: Control household and guest access

Use individual accounts

Do not share one administrator login with everyone. Invite each household member through the service’s user-management feature so access can be removed without changing the owner’s password. Prefer the least privilege available: a person who needs to unlock the door may not need to view recordings, change retention, invite users or alter network settings.

Revoke access promptly

Remove permissions when a guest’s visit ends, a contractor finishes work, a house sitter leaves, a phone is lost or a household relationship changes. Delete temporary entry codes and revoke app sessions, shared links and trusted devices. Check both camera viewing permissions and lock permissions; they may be administered in different menus.

Review logs

If the app provides an activity or access log, review it for unfamiliar sign-ins, viewing events, code use, setting changes and remote unlocks. Record the date and time of anything you do not recognize. Logs are useful evidence, but their coverage varies: a lock may log an unlock without recording which person viewed a live feed.

Why lock security and video privacy must be assessed separately

A compromised camera account may expose a family’s routines without opening the door. A flaw in the lock’s authentication or communication path could affect physical entry even if camera recordings remain private. Evaluate both outcomes when deciding which features to enable.

The Federal Trade Commission’s Tapplock enforcement matter involved a Bluetooth-connected smart padlock, not a camera-equipped door lock. The FTC described allegations that an API allowed authentication bypass, lock-to-app data was not encrypted and users could not effectively revoke access they had given to others. The case is a warning to verify authentication, communication protection and revocation controls; it is not evidence that every camera-equipped lock has those defects.

How to evaluate a smart lock camera before buying

Features and menus differ by manufacturer and can change over time. Ask for current documentation for the exact model and region, then verify each item rather than relying on a product category label.

Security question What to verify Why it matters
Authentication Unique account credentials, two-factor authentication, recovery controls and session management Reduces account takeover and makes suspicious logins easier to detect
Data protection Encryption for account data, live video, stored clips and lock-to-app communications Prevents a claim about one pathway from being mistaken for protection everywhere
Updates Firmware and app update process, support period and automatic security updates Determines how quickly known vulnerabilities can be fixed
Access control Separate users, permission levels, temporary codes, access logs and one-step revocation Limits household and guest access and allows prompt removal
Remote features Independent controls for remote viewing, remote unlocking, notifications and local-only operation Lets you keep useful functions without exposing unnecessary ones
Data practices What is recorded, storage location, retention period, deletion process, sharing and human review in the privacy policy Shows who may handle footage and how long it remains available
Network fit Wi-Fi bands, hub requirements, WPA2/WPA3 compatibility and operation on a guest or IoT network Prevents a security plan that the device cannot support

Do not treat a model as secure merely because it has a camera, a cloud dashboard or a stated encryption feature. The cited FTC guidance provides evaluation criteria, not a current ranking of particular camera-lock models.

Recognize and respond to a possible compromise

Warning signs

  • An unfamiliar login, trusted device, user, access code or permission appears.
  • The camera shows unexpected viewing activity, recordings or settings changes.
  • The lock reports an unlock, code use or remote command you did not initiate.
  • Your password stops working, recovery details change or two-factor prompts arrive unexpectedly.
  • The device repeatedly disconnects, reboots or behaves differently immediately after an unknown configuration change.

Containment steps

  1. Use a trusted device to change the manufacturer-account password and the password of the connected email account.
  2. End all other sessions, remove unknown devices and revoke every unrecognized user or access code.
  3. Disable remote viewing and remote unlocking while you investigate. Disconnect the camera or hub from the network if the app allows safe local operation.
  4. Update the lock, camera, hub, router and app. Replace batteries or restore power only according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. Review camera clips, access logs, router logs and account notifications; preserve relevant timestamps.
  6. Contact the manufacturer through its official support channel and ask whether the account, device or cloud service shows unauthorized activity.
  7. If you believe someone may enter the property, use a trusted physical lock or another safe access method while the smart lock is offline and consider contacting local authorities.

After recovery, change any physical or shared codes that might have been exposed. A factory reset may remove local settings, but it does not necessarily delete cloud recordings or revoke every account session, so confirm both separately.

What public enforcement cases teach you

In a May 2023 announcement, the FTC said its complaint alleged that hackers continued to access stored videos, live streams and account profiles of approximately 55,000 customers of a home-security camera service. That figure is an allegation in that specific enforcement announcement, not a prevalence rate for all cameras and not a smart-lock-specific statistic. It illustrates why account protection, access review and provider data practices matter even when the device is installed inside a private home.

The Tapplock matter likewise shows why a connected lock must be judged on more than its mechanical strength. Authentication bypass, unprotected lock-to-app communication and ineffective revocation would each deserve attention in a product’s current documentation. Neither case proves that all smart locks or cameras share the same weaknesses; use them as questions to ask, not as a verdict about an unnamed model.

  • Monthly: review new users, trusted devices, access codes, sign-in alerts and recent camera or lock activity.
  • After every update: confirm recording, remote access, notifications, privacy zones and permissions.
  • When someone leaves the household: revoke their app account, codes, shared clips and trusted devices immediately.
  • After a router or Wi-Fi change: verify the lock’s network, encryption mode, local operation and update path.
  • At least annually: read the current privacy policy, check retention and deletion settings, test account recovery and replace batteries before they become critical.

Keep a private record of the model, firmware version, account owner, network arrangement and emergency physical key location. That information makes recovery faster without writing passwords or access codes in an exposed note.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can someone hack a smart lock camera?

Yes, unauthorized access is possible if an account, app, router, cloud service or device has a weakness. Reduce the risk with a unique password, two-factor authentication, current updates, hardened Wi-Fi and strict user permissions.

Should I put my smart lock camera on a guest Wi-Fi network?

A separate guest or IoT network can limit the device’s reach to other home systems, provided the lock still supports required discovery, control and updates there. It complements—not replaces—account and firmware security.

How do I stop former guests from viewing my camera?

Remove their individual account, shared links, trusted devices and any temporary lock codes. Review both camera permissions and lock permissions, then change shared credentials if you ever gave them the main login.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does disabling remote viewing make a smart lock camera private?

It reduces internet exposure but does not answer where existing clips are stored, who has local access or what the provider’s privacy policy permits. Review recording, retention, sharing and account settings as well.
