The safest internet-exposed Raspberry Pi is one that is not directly exposed unless you truly need that access. If public reachability is required, keep Raspberry Pi OS and its packages current, use key-based SSH authentication, limit which accounts can log in, expose only the services you need, and enforce those decisions with a firewall. Then choose deliberately between direct access, a VPN, and Raspberry Pi Connect.
This guide follows Raspberry Pi Ltd.’s operational-security, UFW, software-update, SSH, and remote-access guidance. The commands use a Debian-based Raspberry Pi OS installation and assume you have local access or a tested recovery method.
Start with the smallest possible exposure
Before changing settings, write down what the Pi must do from outside your network. A machine that only collects sensor data may need no inbound connection at all. A home-lab administrator may need remote shell access. A web application may need HTTP or HTTPS. Each additional listening service creates another account, software stack, and configuration to maintain.
Decide whether inbound access is necessary
- No inbound access: keep the Pi behind your router and use outbound connections, scheduled jobs, or a relay service.
- Administration only: provide a tightly controlled SSH path, preferably through a VPN or another access method that does not publish SSH to every internet address.
- Public application: expose only the application ports required by its users and keep administration on a separate, restricted path.
Raspberry Pi’s remote-access documentation describes direct SSH or VNC exposure, VPN access, and Raspberry Pi Connect. It presents them as different access patterns rather than declaring one universally safest: Raspberry Pi remote access documentation.

Record a recovery path before making changes
Firewall and SSH edits can cut off a remote administrator. Confirm at least one of these before proceeding:
- A keyboard and display you can connect locally.
- A second, already-tested administrative session.
- Out-of-band console access supplied by the hosting environment.
- A known-good backup or removable system drive, plus a way to restore it.
Do not close your existing SSH session until a new session has successfully authenticated with the intended key and the new rules are visible.
Keep Raspberry Pi OS and packages maintained
Updates are a security control, not a one-time setup task. Raspberry Pi distinguishes updating packages within the installed release from upgrading to a newer major Raspberry Pi OS release. Its documentation states that only the most recent major release contains all the latest security fixes; check the current release status before deciding that an older installation is acceptable: Raspberry Pi configuration documentation and Raspberry Pi SSH and software-updates documentation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Apply normal package updates
- Open a local terminal or a currently working SSH session.
- Refresh the package index:
sudo apt update - Install available upgrades:
sudo apt full-upgrade - Reboot if the update process, a kernel package, or a core service indicates that a restart is required:
sudo reboot - Reconnect and verify that the services you intentionally expose are running.
Read prompts rather than blindly accepting configuration-file replacements. A package update can preserve a locally hardened setting or install a maintainer version that needs review.
Assess the major-release position
Package updates do not turn an old major release into the newest one. Check Raspberry Pi’s release documentation for supported upgrade paths and compatibility requirements. If the installed release is no longer the current major release, plan the upgrade as a change project: back up application data and configuration, test the application on a spare card or image, and schedule local or console access in case the upgrade needs intervention.
Maintain installed applications too
APT only updates software delivered through configured repositories. Update application runtimes, containers, plugins, and manually installed programs according to their maintainers’ procedures. Remove software you no longer use; an abandoned daemon can remain reachable even when the operating system is current.
Harden SSH before exposing it
SSH is often the administration doorway attackers probe first. Raspberry Pi’s operational-security guidance recommends key-based authentication and restricting which accounts may log in. The documentation states: “To make SSH even more secure, use key-based authentication.” See Raspberry Pi operational security documentation.

ssh-keygen -t ed25519
Protect the private key with a passphrase. Copy the public key to the Pi while password login still works:
ssh-copy-id piuser@your-pi-address
If ssh-copy-id is unavailable, append the contents of your local ~/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub file to the Pi user’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys, preserving ownership and permissions. Test a new terminal session explicitly using the key:
ssh -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 piuser@your-pi-address
Do not disable password authentication until this separate session succeeds. Keep the original session open while testing.
Recommended Free Tools
Use a dedicated, non-root account
Create a named administrator account and grant it only the administrative rights it needs. Raspberry Pi OS does not require you to expose a generic account name. Avoid permitting direct root login over SSH; perform privileged tasks through sudo after signing in as the named user.
Restrict SSH logins in the server configuration
Edit the SSH server configuration:
sudo nano /etc/ssh/sshd_config
Add an AllowUsers line listing only the accounts that should be able to connect, for example:
AllowUsers piadmin
Alternatively, use DenyUsers for accounts that must never connect. Keep the rule unambiguous; if you use groups or multiple accounts, review the effective SSH configuration before restarting.
Validate the configuration, then restart SSH:
sudo sshd -t
sudo systemctl restart ssh
Open another terminal and authenticate with the tested key. Only after that works should you consider disabling password authentication with the appropriate SSH setting. Make one change at a time and retain local recovery access. A syntax error or an incorrect account name can prevent the daemon from starting.
Be careful with port changes
Moving SSH to another port can reduce noise in casual scans, but it is not a substitute for keys, account restrictions, updates, or a firewall. If you change the listening port, update the SSH client command, router forwarding, and firewall rule together, and test before ending the existing session.

Build a default-deny firewall with UFW
Raspberry Pi recommends UFW for most users. UFW supplies a simpler interface to the host firewall, but it does not decide which application should be trusted. You must identify the services first. Follow the command examples and cautions in Raspberry Pi’s UFW documentation.
Install and inspect UFW
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ufw
sudo ufw status verbose
If another firewall manager is already controlling the system, understand that arrangement before enabling UFW; overlapping rule managers can make troubleshooting difficult.
Allow your administration path before enabling the firewall
For standard SSH on TCP port 22, add the rule while your current session is still active:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallsudo ufw allow 22/tcp
If you use a different, tested SSH port, allow that port instead. If SSH is reachable only from a trusted management network, a source-restricted rule can reduce exposure, but verify the network addresses carefully so you do not block yourself.
Set conservative defaults and permit required services
sudo ufw default deny incoming
sudo ufw default allow outgoing
Add only the ports required by the Pi’s actual role. Typical examples are:
sudo ufw allow 80/tcp
sudo ufw allow 443/tcp
Those rules are appropriate only when the Pi is intentionally serving HTTP and HTTPS. Do not copy them onto an administration-only device. For another application, use that application’s documented transport and port, and restrict the source network when practical.
Enable and verify UFW
After confirming the SSH rule is present, enable the firewall:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemssudo ufw enable
Immediately inspect the active configuration:
sudo ufw status numbered
sudo ufw status verbose
From a second terminal, establish a fresh SSH connection. If it fails, use the recovery path you prepared rather than repeatedly changing rules from a disappearing session. To remove an incorrect rule, use the number shown by sudo ufw status numbered, for example:

sudo ufw delete 2
Understand what UFW does not solve
A firewall controls which network connections reach a host; it does not patch a vulnerable web application, make a weak password safe, or validate the data an exposed service receives. Keep application authentication, encryption, and updates separate from the port decision.
Expose application services deliberately
For every service, document its purpose, listening address, port, authentication method, update source, and owner. Disable daemons that are not needed:
sudo systemctl list-unit-files --type=service --state=enabled
Use the service’s documentation to stop and disable an unnecessary daemon, then remove its firewall allowance. Avoid binding administrative interfaces to all network interfaces when the application can bind to a private address or localhost behind a properly configured reverse proxy.

HTTP and HTTPS
If the Pi serves a public website or API, allow only the web ports it actually uses and configure TLS according to the application’s current documentation. Do not imply that changing from one port number to another secures the application. Keep SSH or other administration interfaces off the public application path whenever your network design permits.
VNC and graphical access
Graphical remote access can expose more capability than a shell. Do not publish VNC merely because it is convenient. Raspberry Pi’s remote-access documentation lists VNC, VPN, and Connect as different ways to reach a Pi; select one based on who needs access and how much of the network should be reachable: remote-access options.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use Fail2Ban as an additional layer
Fail2Ban watches service logs for repeated suspicious attempts and can temporarily block source addresses. Raspberry Pi describes it as an extra measure, not a replacement for key-based authentication, restricted accounts, updates, and a narrow firewall policy: operational security guidance.
Install and check the service
sudo apt update
sudo apt install fail2ban
sudo systemctl enable --now fail2ban
sudo systemctl status fail2ban
Review the installed jail configuration and enable only jails that match services actually running on the Pi. Confirm that the log paths and ban actions suit your Raspberry Pi OS version. A misconfigured jail can consume resources or block legitimate administrators, while an unmonitored log source provides no useful protection.

Fail2Ban reacts after attempts appear in logs. It does not stop a vulnerability in an exposed application, replace strong credentials, or hide the service from scanners. Treat bans as friction for repeated guessing, not proof that the service is safe.

Choose a remote-access model
The right model depends on whether you need a public service, private administration, or occasional support. The official Raspberry Pi documentation identifies the following patterns but does not claim a universal winner.
| Access model | Exposure model | Network setup | Administrative considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct public SSH or VNC | The selected service is reachable from the internet through router forwarding and host rules. | You configure addressing, forwarding, firewall rules, authentication, and ongoing monitoring yourself. | Maximum control and broad client compatibility, but the service is continuously exposed and must be hardened and maintained. |
| VPN into the home or office network | Clients authenticate to the VPN first; SSH, VNC, or other private services remain inside the virtual network. | You operate the VPN endpoint, keys or accounts, routing, updates, and recovery process. | Reduces the number of publicly reachable Pi services, but a compromised VPN account may provide network-level access. |
| Raspberry Pi Connect | Access is mediated through an external remote-access service rather than a manually forwarded SSH or VNC port. | Raspberry Pi states that Connect avoids manual network configuration. | Convenient for supported use cases; you still need secure Pi accounts, updates, service permissions, and an account-recovery plan. |
Whichever model you choose, separate the access mechanism from the Pi’s security baseline. A VPN or Connect session does not remove the need for updates, least-privilege accounts, and a host firewall.
Verify the finished configuration
Use this checklist after each significant change:
- Confirm the installed Raspberry Pi OS major release and apply available package updates.
- Open a new SSH session using the intended key and named account.
- Verify that only approved accounts are allowed by the SSH configuration.
- Check that root login and unnecessary password-based access are not enabled.
- List listening sockets and match every listener to a documented purpose:
sudo ss -tulpn - Review UFW’s numbered rules and remove allowances for retired services.
- Test the public application from an external network, then test administration separately.
- Check service logs and Fail2Ban status for false positives and repeated attempts.
- Confirm that backups include application data and the configuration needed to rebuild the Pi.
Common failure modes and recovery
SSH stops accepting the new key
Use the original session or local console to check the public-key file, ownership, permissions, account name, and the client’s selected private key. Validate the server configuration with sudo sshd -t before restarting the service again.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
UFW locks out remote administration
Connect locally or through your out-of-band console, run sudo ufw status numbered, and add the correct SSH rule before testing a new session. Do not disable every security control permanently as a workaround; correct the missing or overbroad rule and verify from a second terminal.
An application is unreachable after enabling UFW
Confirm that the service is running and listening on the expected address and port with sudo ss -tulpn. Then compare that port with the UFW rules and any router forwarding. If the service listens only on localhost, a firewall rule alone cannot make it reachable; change the application binding only after reviewing its security model.
A legitimate administrator is banned
Inspect Fail2Ban’s jail and log entries, unban the verified address through the jail’s documented command, and correct the cause—such as a stale key, wrong username, or an automation loop—before reconnecting. Avoid broad permanent allowlists that defeat the purpose of monitoring.
Operate the Pi securely after the initial setup
Internet exposure turns maintenance into an ongoing responsibility. Set a recurring review schedule:
- After every update: verify SSH, the application, UFW status, and required listeners.
- Weekly or on your organization’s schedule: apply package updates and inspect authentication and service logs.
- After configuration changes: test from an external network and confirm that only intended ports are reachable.
- Periodically: remove former users and keys, review enabled services, test backups, and reassess whether public reachability is still needed.
- When a new major Raspberry Pi OS release is available: read the upgrade guidance, test the application, and plan a recoverable migration rather than treating it as an ordinary package update.
A secure configuration is a controlled process: minimize exposure, authenticate administrators strongly, keep the operating system and applications current, permit only required traffic, and preserve a tested way back in when a change goes wrong.
