Before enabling Plex Remote Access, secure the account that controls the server, choose an appropriate secure-connection setting, understand what your router will expose, and avoid broad authentication exceptions. These steps reduce avoidable risks, but they do not make an internet-accessible server risk-free.
1. Protect the Plex account with two-factor authentication
A strong password is important, but Plex account access also governs access to servers linked to that account. Plex supports two-factor authentication (2FA), which adds a second sign-in factor such as a code from an authenticator app. To enable it, go to your Plex account security settings. Plex requires a separate account password and a verified email address.
With 2FA enabled, Plex prompts for the second factor when you sign in to an app or website. There is an important exception for shared households: switching between members of a Plex Home does not trigger another 2FA prompt. Plex advises including only people you trust with account access, so treat Plex Home membership as a meaningful access decision rather than a substitute for separate account security.
2. Set secure connections with client compatibility in mind
In Plex Media Server, open Settings > Server > Network and review Secure connections. Plex offers two choices:

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
| Setting | What it does | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Preferred | The default. Plex uses secure connections when available, but allows regular HTTP if a secure connection cannot be established or the client does not support it. | More tolerant of older or unsupported clients, but does not require every connection to be secure. |
| Required | Accepts only secure connections. | Provides a stricter setting, but a client that cannot connect securely may fail to connect. |
Plex says its certificate setup uses Let’s Encrypt and that supported apps can connect securely. However, Plex’s troubleshooting guidance notes that some third-party apps may not support secure connections and recommends Preferred when a client is unsupported. Check the current compatibility guidance for the apps you actually use before changing the setting; support varies by client and can change. See Plex’s Network settings documentation, secure-connection guide, and remote-access troubleshooting guidance.
Secure connections may also need internet access when the server first downloads its certificate and when a Plex app establishes its connection for the first time. Plex says some connection details are cached for later offline use. The requirements are described in Plex’s internet and network guidance.

3. Know what enabling Remote Access asks of your router
Plex Remote Access lets you reach your server from outside your home network. A Plex player app linked to a Plex account can locate owned or shared servers and connect securely when the server is signed in; reaching it away from home also requires Remote Access to be enabled. Plex explains this account relationship in its player-app connection guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a direct remote connection, Plex can configure a router automatically when it supports UPnP or NAT-PMP. If automatic setup does not work, Plex documents manual port forwarding: forward the chosen external port to internal port 32400 at the server’s internal IP address. The router’s labels and steps depend on its model and network layout, so follow its documentation as well as Plex’s Remote Access setup guide and troubleshooting instructions.

Port forwarding makes a service on your home network reachable from the internet; it is not the same as opening access to every device on your network. Confirm that the forwarding rule points to the intended Plex server and port, and avoid adding extra forwarded ports without a specific need. A router purchase is not automatically required: consider new hardware only if your existing router cannot support the configuration you need.

Plex says a claimed or signed-in server requires authentication by default. In the server’s Network settings, an advanced option can exempt specified local IP addresses or ranges from authentication. That may sound convenient for a legacy client, but Plex warns that a client using the exception without signing in is treated as the administrator or owner, with access to all libraries and server settings.

Leave the exception unused unless a particular client requires it and you understand the privilege it grants. If you do need it, restrict it to the smallest specific address or range that solves the problem rather than exempting a broad part of the network. Plex describes the setting in its Network documentation and explains the access behavior in its local-network authentication article.
What Relay changes—and what it does not
If a Plex app cannot connect directly, Plex Relay can carry the stream through a Plex relay server. Plex says that with secure connections enabled, the stream remains encrypted end to end through Relay and the connection is not terminated on the relay server. Relay has a maximum stream rate of 2 Mbps, which can require transcoding for media with a higher bitrate. Plex says Relay is enabled by default; turning it off removes that fallback. Read Plex’s Relay explanation and Network settings documentation before changing it.
Relay is a fallback path, not a direct-connection performance equivalent. Decide whether its connectivity fallback is more useful to you than removing that path; the 2 Mbps limit can be restrictive for high-bitrate media.
