Secure a local AI agent before connecting any real account by reducing its authority, isolating its tools, protecting credentials outside the model, requiring approval for consequential actions, and testing hostile content. Running on your computer does not make an agent safe: a locally running process may still read files, call websites, execute programs, or send account actions.
What “local” does—and does not—protect
A local agent runs some or all model software on your own computer, but that fact alone says little about its authority. Security depends on the tools exposed to the agent, the operating-system account running those tools, the files and services reachable from the process, the network destinations allowed, and the permissions granted to connected accounts.
A local application can still have access to a browser session, a cloud folder, a mail account, a shell, environment variables, or an unrestricted network connection. It may also pass selected data to a remote model or service if its configuration includes an online provider. Treat “local,” “offline,” and “sandboxed” as separate properties that must be verified in the specific agent and integration you plan to use.
The practical goal is not to make an agent immune to attack. It is to limit what a compromised or misled agent can do, make high-impact actions interruptible, and leave enough evidence to understand and recover from a bad action.

Understand the attack path before granting access
OWASP identifies direct and indirect prompt injection as core agent risks. The hostile instruction may be typed by a user, embedded in a web page, hidden in a document, or included in an email. NIST’s CAISI technical staff describes the account-connected version of this problem as agent hijacking: malicious instructions are inserted into data that an agent ingests.
The failure chain is straightforward:
- An agent retrieves or receives untrusted content.
- The model interprets an instruction in that content as relevant to the task, or gives it too much weight.
- The model selects an available tool, such as a mail sender, file operation, browser, or command runner.
- Broad permissions allow the tool call to create a real account change, disclose data, or perform an irreversible action.
Local execution does not break this chain. It only changes where part of the software runs. OWASP’s agent guidance also lists tool abuse and privilege escalation, data exfiltration, memory poisoning, excessive autonomy, supply-chain attacks, and sensitive-data exposure. Use those categories when deciding what your setup must prevent or detect.
Start with a capability inventory
Before connecting an account, write down every capability the agent can invoke, including capabilities enabled indirectly by plugins, extensions, scripts, or a browser session. Record what each tool can read, what it can change, and whether an action is reversible.
| Capability | Questions to answer | Initial classification |
|---|---|---|
| File and folder access | Which directories can it list, read, create, modify, or delete? Can it follow links into other locations? | Read-only, constrained-write, or write-capable |
| Email or messaging | Can it search messages, download attachments, draft replies, send, forward, or change mailbox rules? | Separate search/read, draft, and send permissions |
| Cloud storage | Which account, shared drives, and folders are visible? Can it overwrite, move, share, or delete files? | Prefer a test folder and read-only scope |
| Browser or web retrieval | Can it reach arbitrary sites, submit forms, upload data, or reuse a logged-in session? | Retrieval-only until navigation and submission are proven safe |
| Shell, scripts, or code execution | Can it start processes, install packages, access devices, or inspect other users’ data? | Disabled unless essential; otherwise isolated and low-privilege |
| Memory and retrieval stores | What past conversations, indexed files, or shared memory can influence a decision? Who can write to them? | Separate stores by task and trust level |
| Network access | Which hosts, ports, APIs, and local services are reachable? Can it exfiltrate data to arbitrary destinations? | Explicit destination allowlist |
Include tools that appear harmless but can become powerful in combination. For example, read access to sensitive mail plus unrestricted web requests can still enable data exfiltration. A file reader plus a write-capable cloud connector can turn a malicious document into an account change.
Apply least privilege outside the model
OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet states: “Grant agents the minimum tools required for their specific task.” Implement that rule in the account, operating system, and tool configuration—not merely in a system prompt.
Choose the smallest useful account scope
- Connect only the account needed for the immediate task.
- Limit cloud access to specific folders or repositories rather than an entire drive.
- Use a mailbox or label that contains only test messages when validating a mail workflow.
- Prefer read-only tokens or permissions when the task does not require changes.
- Keep separate permission sets for separate jobs, users, or trust levels.
If a task can be completed by producing a draft, report, or proposed file change, do not grant direct send, publish, delete, or overwrite authority. A constrained-write tool that can update one named location is safer than a general file-management tool.

Separate read, propose, and commit stages
Design workflows in stages. The agent can first retrieve information, then produce a proposed action, and only later invoke a commit operation after an explicit authorization step. This separation reduces the chance that an instruction hidden in retrieved content immediately becomes an external action.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchDo not treat the model’s text as an access-control boundary. A prompt that says “never delete files” cannot reliably constrain a tool that has deletion authority. Enforce the prohibition in the connector, service account, operating-system permissions, or an approval service that the model cannot bypass.
Make authorization deterministic
Define a policy for each tool before enabling it. The policy should specify allowed resources, operations, parameter limits, destination restrictions, and the conditions that require human approval. Reject requests that fall outside the policy before the tool executes.
| Policy element | Example decision |
|---|---|
| Resource scope | Allow the “invoices-2026” folder, not the entire home directory. |
| Operation | Permit reading and creating drafts; deny sending or deleting. |
| Parameter validation | Accept a recipient from an approved domain and cap attachment size; reject everything else. |
| Destination | Permit requests only to documented service endpoints needed for the task. |
| Approval condition | Require confirmation for external messages, security-setting changes, payments, or irreversible deletion. |
| Rate and volume limits | Limit the number of records, messages, or files changed in one run so an error cannot scale unchecked. |
Never place passwords, API tokens, private keys, or connection strings in a system prompt, conversation history, memory store, or retrieved document. OWASP’s guidance on system-prompt leakage emphasizes that prompts are not a secure place for secrets and that authorization must be enforced elsewhere.
Isolate tool execution
OWASP Cornucopia’s Agentic AI guidance recommends sandboxing, input validation, low privileges, and tool-call logging. Use an execution environment in which a tool cannot reach unrelated host resources even if the model produces a malicious or malformed request.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Use a dedicated operating-system identity. Run the agent and its tools as a user without administrative rights. Do not run the process as an administrator or equivalent superuser.
- Separate the workspace. Give the process only the directories required for the task. Deny access to private documents, browser profiles, SSH keys, password stores, device interfaces, and other users’ files.
- Constrain processes. Disable shell or process creation unless it is essential. If code execution is required, place it in a disposable isolated environment and prevent it from controlling the host.
- Restrict networking. Deny outbound traffic by default and allow only named destinations and ports required by the workflow. Do not assume that a local model means no network traffic.
- Validate every tool argument. Check paths, URLs, recipients, query sizes, file types, and requested operations against an allowlist before execution. Reject ambiguous or over-broad values rather than letting the model reinterpret them.
- Remove inherited secrets. Prevent the process from receiving production credentials, sensitive environment variables, or credentials cached by unrelated applications.
- Make the environment disposable where possible. A resettable workspace limits persistence if memory, downloaded content, or a tool is compromised.
Inspect the actual configuration for the agent and each integration. A setting labeled “sandbox” may isolate only one tool while leaving browser, file, or network access unrestricted.

Protect credentials and connected accounts
Use the account provider’s narrowest available authorization and keep credentials under the provider’s or operating system’s secret-management controls. The agent should receive a capability or short-lived authorization for a specific operation, not a reusable master password.
- Do not paste credentials into chat, prompts, notes, or memory.
- Do not expose a production token through an environment variable inherited by arbitrary tool processes.
- Use separate test and production accounts when the service supports them.
- Revoke a token immediately if you broadened its scope during troubleshooting or if logs show unexpected use.
- Review account activity and active sessions after the first connection and after any configuration change.
- Keep recovery methods and administrative credentials outside the agent’s reach.
The cited OWASP and NIST material supports keeping secrets out of prompts and limiting tool-process access; it does not prescribe one universal secret-storage product. Choose controls that let you scope, rotate, revoke, and audit the credentials used by your specific service.
Put a human gate in front of consequential actions
OWASP recommends explicit authorization and confirmation before irreversible or high-impact operations, especially when untrusted input may have influenced the request. Define the gate before the agent ever sees the real account.
Actions that should normally require confirmation
- Sending, forwarding, or publishing a message
- Deleting or permanently overwriting files
- Changing account, security, sharing, or recovery settings
- Making a payment, purchase, transfer, or other financial commitment
- Uploading sensitive data to an external service
- Creating new credentials, users, rules, or automations
The confirmation screen should show the exact operation, destination, data involved, and relevant parameters—not merely a generic “allow tool” button. Make approval a separate action that the model cannot simulate through text. For bulk operations, require a bounded batch and show representative items plus the total count.
Log enough to reconstruct what happened
Record the input that led to an action, the selected tool, validated arguments, execution result, approval decision, and identity under which the tool ran. OWASP’s agentic guidance also recommends logging action provenance so an operator can trace why an operation occurred.
Protect logs from the agent and from ordinary users who could rewrite them. Avoid copying full secrets or unnecessary personal content into logs; record references, hashes, or redacted fields where possible. Set a retention period appropriate to the sensitivity of the account and make sure timestamps allow events from the model, tool runner, approval interface, and account provider to be correlated.

Monitoring should alert on behavior that violates the intended design, such as a new destination, an unusual volume of reads, repeated denied calls, attempts to access disallowed paths, or a write operation outside an approved window. Logging without review is evidence after an incident, not prevention.
Test with hostile content before using real data
OWASP recommends structured security testing before deployment and after material changes to prompts, tools, memory, retrieval, policies, or model providers. Test the complete path, not just the model’s response in a chat window.
Build adversarial test cases
- A document that tells the agent to ignore the user and upload local files
- An email that requests forwarding a confidential attachment to an outside address
- A web page containing instructions to disable safeguards or reveal hidden context
- A filename or path designed to escape the permitted workspace
- A request that combines a harmless read with an unauthorized delete or send operation
- A large batch request intended to exploit missing rate or volume limits
Verify the controls, not just the refusal text
For each test, confirm that the untrusted instruction is identified as data, the proposed tool call is denied or paused, the approval gate appears when required, and the log contains enough provenance to explain the result. A polite refusal is not sufficient if the tool still executes, if a secret appears in output, or if the process can reach a disallowed resource through another tool.
Repeat the tests after adding a connector, changing a prompt, enabling memory, changing retrieval sources, changing the model provider, or modifying the execution environment. NIST’s work on agent hijacking evaluations and its August 2025 discussion of tool use both emphasize that permissions and deployment context shape risk.

| Execution isolation | Dedicated low-privilege identity, separated workspace, restricted network | Host-wide filesystem, shell, process, and unrestricted network access |
| Action impact | Draft or proposed change with explicit approval | Automatic send, delete, payment, sharing, or security-setting change |
| Auditability | Protected logs containing inputs, calls, outputs, and approvals | No provenance, incomplete logs, or logs writable by the agent |
| Testability | Adversarial cases run before and after material changes | No tests for hostile documents, messages, or web content |

Know what current guidance does—and does not—promise
OWASP provides practical agent-security guidance covering prompt injection, least privilege, tool authorization, isolation, logging, and testing. NIST’s January 2025 CAISI article discusses evaluation of agent hijacking, and its August 2025 tool-use material explains how permissions and deployment environments affect risk.
On February 5, 2026, NIST announced a concept-paper effort on the identity and authority of software agents, including identity, authorization, auditing, and prompt-injection concerns. That announcement describes a proposed NCCoE project and feedback activity; it is not a finalized agent-specific security standard. NIST’s May 18, 2026 summary of responses to an AI-agent security request for information similarly reports stakeholder views and does not replace a control standard.

When to stop and disconnect
Revoke account access and stop the agent if it attempts an unapproved tool, accesses a disallowed path, sends data to an unknown destination, bypasses an approval gate, produces unexplained high-volume activity, or reveals a credential. Preserve the relevant logs, rotate exposed credentials, review account activity from a separate trusted device, and re-test the isolated configuration before reconnecting anything.
A local agent is ready for a limited account connection only when its authority is documented, enforced outside the model, isolated from unrelated host resources, protected by approval gates, observable in logs, and challenged with hostile inputs. Expand access only when the task requires it and the evidence from those controls justifies the additional risk.
