A secure Linux VPS is built in layers: establish a way back in, patch the operating system, remove unnecessary services, administer it through a least-privilege account, restrict the firewall to required traffic, and then test both the host configuration and its externally reachable services. Make one change at a time, validate it before ending your current session, and retain scan results so you can prove what changed.

The procedure below uses Ubuntu terminology and commands where the source material is Ubuntu-specific. The same principles apply to other distributions, but package commands, firewall tools, service names, and compliance profiles must match the installed release.

1. Prepare recovery and build an inventory

Remote hardening can lock you out. Ubuntu explicitly warns that an invalid SSH change may prevent remote administration, so do not begin by editing SSH or enabling a firewall until you have an alternative recovery path.

Confirm an out-of-band route

  • Open your provider’s web console, serial console, rescue environment, or other out-of-band administration channel and verify that it works.
  • Take a restorable VPS snapshot and confirm that you know how to restore it. A snapshot is not a substitute for an independent backup if the provider stores both on the same failure domain.
  • Keep the current SSH session open while testing changes, and prepare a second session from an approved management network.

Record the starting state

Save the distribution and release, kernel version, public IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, administrative users, listening sockets, enabled services, package repositories, and application ports that must be reachable. On a systemd host, these checks provide a useful baseline:

  • cat /etc/os-release identifies the distribution and release.
  • uname -r records the running kernel.
  • sudo ss -tulpen lists listening TCP and UDP sockets with processes.
  • sudo systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabled shows services configured to start.
  • sudo getent passwd and a review of /etc/sudoers plus /etc/sudoers.d/ help identify accounts and delegated privileges.

Mark each socket and service as required, internal-only, temporary, or unknown. Investigate unknown listeners before exposing the VPS to the Internet.

2. Patch first and keep patching

Unpatched software is an avoidable source of compromise. Ubuntu recommends regular updates and documents unattended-upgrades. On Ubuntu Server it is installed by default, applies security updates automatically, and normally runs daily. Automatic updates reduce the window between a security release and installation, but they do not eliminate the need to review logs, test applications, and plan reboots.

Apply the initial update

  1. Refresh package metadata with the distribution’s supported update command.
  2. Install available updates, including security fixes, using your normal change-control process.
  3. Check whether a kernel, libc, OpenSSH, or other restart-sensitive package changed.
  4. Reboot during an approved maintenance window when the running kernel or a critical service requires it.
  5. Repeat uname -r, service checks, and application health checks after the reboot.

On Ubuntu, review the configuration under /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/, including the unattended-upgrades settings, and inspect its logs under the system log directories. Confirm that updates are actually succeeding rather than assuming that an enabled timer means patches were installed. Record failed packages, held packages, and reboots that still need to occur.

Align updates with support life

Canonical states that standard Ubuntu LTS security support for Main packages is five years. Ubuntu Pro extends the stated security coverage to ten years and adds vulnerability patching for Universe packages. These periods are lifecycle statements, not a guarantee that every third-party repository or application will receive updates. Select an operating-system release and support plan that remain inside their maintenance window for the life of the VPS.

3. Remove software and network exposure you do not need

Every installed daemon is code that can contain a vulnerability and a listening service is an externally testable entry point. After patching, uninstall software that is not needed and disable services that are not part of the VPS role. Do not remove a package merely because it is unfamiliar: identify its dependencies and confirm that it is not required by the application, backup agent, monitoring system, or recovery tooling.

Classify listeners before changing them

  • Public application ports: expose only the ports that customers must reach, normally HTTPS and any explicitly documented application port.
  • Management ports: keep SSH reachable only from an approved administration network where feasible.
  • Internal dependencies: bind databases, queues, caches, and metrics endpoints to localhost or a private interface unless remote access is required.
  • Unknown ports: identify the owning process, package, configuration, and business purpose before deciding whether to stop it.

After disabling a service, verify both its unit state and its sockets. A stopped service may be started again by a socket unit, timer, container, or package update if you do not check the complete service relationship.

4. Create a least-privilege administration path

Use a named administrative account rather than performing routine work as root. Grant only the sudo permissions needed for maintenance, keep credentials out of scripts and tickets, and review membership of privileged groups regularly.

Create and test the administrative account

  1. Create a unique account for each administrator and set a strong authentication method appropriate to your policy.
  2. Grant the account the required sudo rights through the distribution’s supported mechanism. Prefer a narrowly scoped rule over unrestricted access when your operational tooling permits it.
  3. Open a second SSH session as that account and run a harmless command through sudo, such as sudo -v, before changing root access.
  4. Review existing root-equivalent accounts, stale users, unused authorized keys, and accounts with no accountable owner.

Keep a documented emergency procedure for the provider console. Least privilege is useful only if someone can still recover the machine when a key is lost or a policy change is wrong.

5. Harden SSH without locking yourself out

OpenSSH supplies the encrypted server and client tools used for remote control and file transfer. Key-based authentication is generally preferable to passwords for administration, provided private keys are protected, rotated, and recoverable. SSH settings can be placed in /etc/ssh/sshd_config or a file under /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/; use the layout supported by your distribution and confirm which files are included.

Make changes in a safe order

  1. Install and test the administrator’s public key while the existing login method still works.
  2. From a second terminal, log in using that key and confirm that sudo works.
  3. Apply the intended SSH policy: disable direct root login if your recovery plan supports it, disable password authentication when all administrators have working keys, and restrict administrative access by source network where practical.
  4. Check ownership and permissions on the SSH directory, private keys, and each user’s authorized_keys file.
  5. Validate syntax before restarting: sudo sshd -t. If it returns an error, fix the configuration and run the test again; do not restart a configuration that fails.
  6. Restart or reload the SSH service only after the syntax check succeeds. Keep the original session open and authenticate through the new policy from the second session.

Changing the port can reduce background noise but is not an access-control substitute. Source restrictions, key authentication, account policy, patching, and monitoring provide the meaningful security controls. If your provider, automation, or support process depends on root or password logins, document that dependency and remove it deliberately rather than breaking it without a recovery path.

6. Apply a default-deny firewall policy

Ubuntu identifies ufw as its default firewall configuration tool. A practical VPS policy denies unsolicited inbound traffic, allows established return traffic, permits SSH only from an approved management network when possible, and opens only the public application ports you have documented.

Plan rules before enabling UFW

  1. List every port the application needs and whether it is TCP, UDP, public, or private.
  2. Identify the source CIDR ranges that administer the VPS. A fixed office or VPN range is safer than allowing SSH from everywhere.
  3. Keep your current SSH connection active while adding and testing rules.
  4. Use UFW’s dry-run or status output to inspect the resulting policy before committing a broad change.

Example rule sequence

The exact syntax depends on your ports and source network. A typical Ubuntu sequence is:

  1. sudo ufw default deny incoming
  2. sudo ufw default allow outgoing
  3. sudo ufw allow from 198.51.100.0/24 to any port 22 proto tcp to limit SSH to an example management network. Replace this example range with the network you actually control.
  4. sudo ufw allow 443/tcp for HTTPS, and add another public rule only when the application requires it.
  5. sudo ufw enable after verifying that the SSH rule covers your current source address.

Do not copy the example management range as if it were yours. If administrators connect through changing addresses, use a VPN or another controlled access network instead of opening SSH globally.

Verify from inside and outside

  • sudo ufw status verbose shows the active defaults and rules.
  • sudo ufw status numbered provides rule numbers for review and deletion.
  • From a second network, test that required public ports respond and that administrative or internal ports do not.
  • Inspect ss -tulpen again: a firewall rule does not stop a service from listening, and a service bound to a public address may still be reachable through another control path.

Keep the current session until the second login and application tests succeed. If you lose access, use the provider console to inspect UFW status, remove the blocking rule, and restore the last known-good SSH configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Test the VPS at multiple layers

No single scan proves that a VPS is secure. Combine an authenticated host assessment, local service and package checks, and an unauthenticated external reachability test. Each answers a different question.

Assessment What it can show What it cannot establish alone
Local inventory and logs Listening sockets, enabled services, failed updates, authentication events, and configuration changes. Whether an Internet attacker can reach every path from every network.
Authenticated configuration scan Operating-system settings, package state, permissions, policy controls, and benchmark checks. Business risk, application logic flaws, or paths blocked by an external firewall.
External network scan Ports and services visible from the Internet and the practical effect of perimeter rules. Whether hidden host settings comply with a benchmark.
Application-specific testing Weaknesses in the web server, API, database, container, or custom application. General operating-system compliance.

Use a matching compliance profile

NIST recommends using a compliance-checking tool such as SCC or OpenSCAP against the applicable CIS Benchmark or DISA STIG. Choose content that matches the installed distribution and release; a profile for a different Ubuntu release or a different operating system can produce misleading failures and passes.

For an OpenSCAP evaluation, identify the installed SCAP content and the profile identifier, then run the equivalent of:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
oscap xccdf eval --profile "$PROFILE_ID" --results results.xml "$CONTENT_FILE"

Review the result rather than treating the exit status as a verdict. For controlled remediation, NIST documents the corresponding pattern:

oscap xccdf remediate --results remediation-results.xml results.xml

Remediation can change security-sensitive settings, so take a backup, understand each rule, and test SSH, networking, and applications afterward. For Red Hat-family systems, Red Hat documents remote OpenSCAP checking with oscap-ssh and configuration-compliance scanning; use the profile and content supplied for that operating-system release.

Pair authenticated and external results

An authenticated scan can confirm that SSH policy, file permissions, update settings, and firewall configuration meet a profile. An external scan shows what an attacker can actually reach from outside. A “clean” conclusion is justified only after reviewing the detailed output, investigating exceptions, and retaining the reports.

8. Remediate findings without creating new risk

Sort findings by exploitability, exposure, privilege required, and business impact. Internet-facing services, unsupported software, exposed administrative interfaces, and missing security updates normally deserve attention before low-impact policy deviations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a repeatable remediation loop

  1. Record the finding identifier, affected package or setting, evidence, and the profile version.
  2. Decide whether to fix, mitigate, accept temporarily, or mark the finding not applicable. Record the owner and expiration date for exceptions.
  3. Back up the relevant configuration and confirm console access before changing SSH, firewall, authentication, or kernel settings.
  4. Apply one related group of changes, then test service health, login, application traffic, and logging.
  5. Run the same scan again and compare the new report with the original.

Do not hide a finding by deleting the scanner’s evidence or suppressing a rule without documenting why. A compensating control may be valid, but it should be visible to the person reviewing the report.

9. Keep evidence and schedule repeat checks

Security is a maintenance process rather than a one-time hardening task. Keep a dated record containing:

  • OS release, kernel version, and support status.
  • Benchmark or STIG name, profile identifier, content version, and scan date.
  • Initial and post-remediation reports, including accepted exceptions.
  • SSH configuration validation result from sudo sshd -t.
  • Firewall rules from sudo ufw status verbose and the numbered rule list.
  • Update history, unattended-upgrades logs, failed packages, and planned reboots.
  • Backup or snapshot identifiers and evidence that a restore procedure was tested.
  • Inventory of public ports, enabled services, administrative users, and authorized keys.

Repeat the inventory and scans after major package, kernel, OpenSSH, firewall, or application changes. Set a regular cadence appropriate to the VPS risk and change rate, and trigger an additional review after an incident, a newly disclosed vulnerability, or a provider-network change.

10. A practical go-live checklist

  • Provider console or out-of-band recovery has been tested.
  • A restorable snapshot or backup exists, and restoration is understood.
  • OS release, kernel, users, services, sockets, addresses, and required ports are documented.
  • Security updates are installed; automatic update configuration and logs are being reviewed.
  • Unsupported or unnecessary software and services are removed or disabled.
  • A named administrator can log in with a protected key and use only the required sudo rights.
  • SSH configuration passes sudo sshd -t; a second login works before the first session is closed.
  • Root and password-based SSH decisions match the threat model and recovery plan.
  • UFW denies unsolicited inbound traffic and allows only documented ports and approved management sources.
  • Authenticated OpenSCAP or SCC testing uses a profile matching the distribution and release.
  • An external test confirms that only intended services are reachable.
  • Findings, remediation decisions, exceptions, and repeat-scan results are retained.

What “secure” means for a Linux VPS

A secured VPS is not one that has merely changed its SSH port or passed a single scanner. It is a host with a recoverable administration path, current supported software, limited privileges, minimal listening services, an explicit network policy, and evidence that its configuration and external exposure were tested. The controls must continue to match the operating-system lifecycle and the application that the server actually runs.
