To secure a Ledger hardware wallet, protect its Secret Recovery Phrase offline and treat the device’s own screen—not the connected phone or computer—as the final place to verify an address or transaction before approving it. Confirm the action and the details shown on the signer match what you intended. If the device shows unreadable data or information you cannot understand, reject the request rather than guessing.

Protect the recovery phrase and device setup

Your Secret Recovery Phrase is the root secret for the wallet: Ledger describes it as the human-readable backup from which private keys are derived. Someone who obtains it may be able to restore access to the associated assets. Store it privately in a protected physical location; do not photograph it, save it to cloud storage, type it into a website, or share it in response to a message or support request. Ledger’s security guidance explains the phrase’s role and recommends protecting it offline.

Download Ledger Wallet through Ledger’s official download page, choose a difficult-to-guess device PIN, and never enter the recovery phrase into a connected computer or phone. Packaging varies by model; Ledger says packaging strips are not tamper-proof security. If the device appears damaged, do not use it; contact official support instead. See Ledger’s crypto wallet security checklist for its setup and storage recommendations.

Verify a receiving address on the device

  1. Request the receiving address through the wallet workflow you intend to use.
  2. Connect and unlock the Ledger signer, then open the relevant asset app if prompted.
  3. Compare the complete address shown on the device’s secure screen with the address on the connected interface. Do not rely only on the phone or computer display.
  4. Share the address only after the two displays match. When using a third-party software wallet, Ledger recommends sending a small test transfer first and confirming that it arrives.

Address checks matter because malware or a misleading interface can show a different address from the one you meant to use. Ledger’s hardware-wallet security tips recommend checking the address on the trusted device display.

Review every transaction before signing

Start the transfer or smart-contract operation in Ledger Wallet or your chosen third-party interface. The connected device initiates the transaction and communicates with the blockchain; Ledger says the signer’s Secure Element controls the secure screen and performs the signing. Before physically approving, read every field the device presents and compare it with your intention.

  • Action: Identify whether you are sending, swapping, or granting a contract permission.
  • Recipient or contract: Check the destination address or contract details shown by the signer.
  • Asset and amount: Confirm the token or currency and the quantity.
  • Permissions: For a contract interaction, understand what access or approval it requests, including whether it could persist beyond this transaction.

Approve only when the displayed details make sense and match the action you intended. Reject a mismatch or a request you cannot interpret. Ledger’s description of how its hardware wallets work explains why the device screen and physical approval step are part of the signing process.

Know when Clear Signing is available—and when it is not

Clear Signing presents transaction intent and fields in readable form on the signer. Ledger says it is available in its integrated flows; outside those flows, availability depends on whether the dApp supports it. Ledger’s Clear Signing overview describes that distinction.

Ledger defines blind signing as “approving a transaction without being able to clearly interpret its contents.” If a prompt shows raw hexadecimal data, generic data, or a blind-signing warning, you do not have the same readable basis for checking what the transaction will do. Prefer a route that supports Clear Signing. If one is unavailable, use an independent transaction simulator where appropriate, and continue only if you can verify the intended effect. If you still cannot understand the request, reject it. Ledger’s blind-signing guidance explains the risk of approving data that cannot be clearly interpreted.

Reduce exposure when interacting with smart contracts

For dApp use, Ledger’s security checklist recommends simulating transactions when clear details are unavailable, revoking approvals you no longer need, and separating assets across accounts or wallets. These measures can limit exposure if an interaction is risky; they do not establish that a contract is safe or recover assets after an unwanted transaction.
