Secure a home router by installing available firmware updates, using WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, replacing default passwords, and disabling features you do not need. Keep it if the exact model still receives security updates and supports WPA2 or WPA3. Consider replacing it if those encryption options remain unavailable after an update, or its manufacturer no longer provides security updates.

Update the router before changing its security settings

Check the router’s administration interface or the manufacturer’s support page for a firmware update, then install any available update. The exact menu names and update process vary by model. If your internet service provider (ISP) supplied the router, ask whether it installs firmware updates automatically and whether you need to take any action. The FTC’s home Wi-Fi guidance recommends checking for updates and contacting the ISP about automatic updates for ISP-provided equipment.

Configure the Wi-Fi and administrator accounts

Choose WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal

In the router’s wireless security settings, select WPA3 Personal if available; otherwise, use WPA2 Personal. The FTC describes WPA3 as the newer option and says both WPA3 and WPA2 scramble information sent over the network. If the settings show only WPA or WEP, update the router software and check again. If WPA2 and WPA3 are still unavailable, the FTC says to consider getting a new router.

Replace default credentials and the network name

Change the router’s default administrator username and password, as well as its Wi-Fi network name (SSID). Use unique values that do not identify your household, address, or router brand. Keep the administrator password separate from the Wi-Fi password; someone who joins the Wi-Fi should not automatically have the credentials to change router settings.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Turn off features you do not need

  • Remote management: Disable it unless you have a specific need to administer the router from outside your home network.
  • Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS): Turn it off if you do not use it to connect devices.
  • Universal Plug and Play (UPnP): Disable it unless a device or application you rely on needs it.

These features can make some device setup or connectivity workflows more convenient. If turning one off disrupts something you use, check that device’s instructions before deciding whether to re-enable it. The FTC recommends turning off remote management, WPS, and UPnP; CISA’s home router guidance also recommends disabling UPnP and remote management when they are not needed.

Use the router’s remaining protections

  • Enable the firewall: Confirm the router’s built-in firewall is on, if your model provides one.
  • Set up a guest network: Use it for visitors or devices you want to keep separate from your main network, if the router offers this option.
  • Log out after administration: Sign out of the router’s administrator account when you finish changing settings.

Menu labels and available options vary by router. The FTC’s guidance on securing a home Wi-Fi network covers these precautions alongside updates, passwords, and encryption.

Decide whether to keep or replace the router

Situation What to do
The router supports WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal, and security updates remain available for the exact model. Keep it, install available updates, and apply the security settings above.
WPA2 and WPA3 remain unavailable after a software update. Consider replacing it, following the FTC’s guidance.
The manufacturer has ended security updates for the exact model. Plan to replace it rather than relying on age alone as the deciding factor.
The ISP supplied the router, but its update or support status is unclear. Ask the ISP whether it updates the firmware automatically and whether it can provide a supported replacement.

Check the manufacturer’s support information for the exact model and hardware revision. A model’s age by itself does not establish whether it still receives security updates. CISA advises communications-infrastructure operators to monitor vendor end-of-life announcements and upgrade as soon as possible; that guidance is useful lifecycle context, but it is not a consumer-router rule. See CISA’s end-of-life guidance.

What to check if you replace it

Before choosing a replacement, verify its security support and compatibility rather than assuming a new device is automatically a better fit. Check the manufacturer’s current documentation and, for ISP service, confirm compatibility with the provider.
