If your recovery phrase, wallet backup, or private keys may have been exposed, treat the wallet as compromised. Do not try to make the old wallet safe by replacing or resetting the hardware. Create a genuinely new wallet and backup on a trusted device, then transfer assets to addresses controlled by that new wallet. Never restore the suspected phrase as the destination wallet.
What to do first
Move quickly, but do not let urgency push you into another phishing or signing mistake. Use this order:
- Stop entering the old backup. Do not type it into a computer or phone, photograph it, upload it, store it in cloud notes, or send it to anyone. Ledger’s safety guidance treats the recovery phrase as a secret key, not as an ordinary password.
- Assume exposure if there is a credible possibility. A phrase that was seen, typed, copied, photographed, or uploaded should be considered exposed even if you do not know whether someone used it.
- Separate support from the emergency response. Do not disclose the phrase to a person who contacts you through email, messaging, social media, or a pop-up claiming to be support. Use the manufacturer’s official support channel and follow its emergency procedure.
- Prepare a trusted setup. Use a hardware wallet obtained through a legitimate channel and a computer or phone you have reason to trust. Avoid links or downloads supplied by an unsolicited “helper.”
- Generate a new wallet and backup on the hardware device. The new backup must be generated as new keys. Do not import or recover the suspected phrase into this wallet.
- Verify the new receiving address on the device. Compare the address shown on the hardware wallet’s trusted display with the address on the computer or phone before sending funds.
- Transfer assets from the affected wallet. A small test transfer can help confirm the destination, but it does not make a transfer risk-free. After the test arrives, move the remaining assets, accounting for network fees and asset-specific requirements.
Why a suspected phrase exposure requires new keys
A recovery phrase controls the wallet
A seed phrase or wallet backup is a form of key material. Anyone who obtains it can restore the wallet and control the associated addresses. That is why Ledger says never to share the phrase or type it into a computer or phone. It is not something support staff, an exchange, or a software troubleshooting tool should need to see.
Replacing hardware does not revoke the old keys
Recovering the wallet on replacement hardware restores the same keys. It may restore your access, but it does not remove access from anyone who copied the phrase. Resetting the device, reinstalling wallet software, or buying a newer device therefore does not solve a phrase compromise.

Key rotation means a new wallet and a transfer
Trezor’s missing-backup guidance recommends creating a new wallet with a new backup and moving funds to it. Ledger gives the same practical direction for a phrase that may have been exposed: create fresh accounts and transfer assets rather than importing a phrase that may already be known to someone else. The security change comes from the new keys, not from the physical device.
“Act immediately by creating a new wallet and moving your assets to a secure location to prevent potential unauthorized access,” Trezor Team says in its guidance on a missing device or wallet backup.
Identify which incident you have
| Situation | Security response | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| The phrase or backup may have been seen, typed, photographed, or uploaded | Create a new wallet and transfer assets to it | Act as though the keys are exposed, even if no unauthorized transaction is visible |
| The device is lost or the backup is missing, but you can still operate the wallet on the device | Create a new wallet and move the funds while the device remains usable | A missing backup cannot be regenerated; do not wait until the device also becomes inaccessible |
| The device is damaged, but the backup is believed to have remained private | Recovery on replacement hardware may restore access | If there is any reason to suspect the backup was exposed, recovery alone does not secure the assets |
| You see an unexpected transaction, suspect malware or coercion, or think the device was tampered with | Stop normal use and follow the manufacturer’s official emergency process, then seek relevant chain or service support | There is no universal incident-response procedure or promise that a transaction can be reversed |
These distinctions reflect vendor guidance and are not a guarantee that every hardware model, firmware event, chain, or service has the same remedy. For a device-specific incident, use the exact emergency instructions for that manufacturer.
Set up a trusted environment
Keep the old phrase out of every electronic device
Do not make a digital copy “temporarily.” A screenshot, clipboard entry, cloud backup, password manager record, printer spool, or phone camera can become another copy. If the phrase was already entered into a computer or phone, treat that as exposure and proceed with a fresh wallet.
Use official software and support paths
Start from the manufacturer’s official website or application that you locate independently, not a link in an unsolicited message. Trezor warns that purported support agents may ask for a wallet backup; that request is a phishing signal. Official support can help with device or firmware questions, but it should never need your phrase.
Do not improvise a recovery destination
A hardware wallet is appropriate for generating the replacement wallet because the new backup is generated offline on the device, according to Trezor’s guidance. Do not paste the suspected phrase into a browser wallet, desktop wallet, mobile wallet, or “recovery checker” to see whether it works. That test would expose the keys again.
Generate the replacement wallet
- Connect the trusted hardware wallet and open its official setup flow. Follow the current instructions for your exact model and firmware rather than relying on an old video or a third-party walkthrough.
- Choose the option to create a new wallet. Do not choose recover, restore, import, or any option that asks for the suspected backup.
- Let the device generate the new backup. Trezor describes this backup as generated offline on the device. The words shown by the device are the new key material.
- Write the new backup on paper or another manufacturer-supported offline medium. Keep it private and physically protected. Never photograph it or put it in an internet-connected service.
- Complete the device’s verification step. Check each word and its order as the device requests. A transcription error can make the backup unusable even though it is not a compromise.
- Record the new wallet’s receiving accounts only through the official wallet interface. The old phrase must not appear anywhere in this setup.
The new backup is now the authority for the replacement wallet. Anyone who obtains it could control that wallet, so apply the same secrecy rules immediately.

Should you buy another hardware wallet?
A replacement device can be useful for generating the new wallet, but the purchase itself is not the security fix. The important change is that the destination wallet has newly generated keys and a new backup. Restoring the exposed phrase on a different model simply reproduces the old keys. Choose a device through the manufacturer’s legitimate sales or distribution channel, follow its current setup instructions, and confirm that it supports the assets and networks you actually hold. Do not buy a steel backup plate or another accessory expecting it to repair an already exposed phrase; a more durable copy of compromised words remains compromised.
Verify the destination before sending
Check the address on the hardware display
When the wallet application shows a receiving address, use the hardware wallet’s trusted display to verify it where the device supports that function. Malware can alter an address copied on the computer or phone; the purpose of the device check is to catch that substitution before funds leave the old wallet.

Confirm the asset and network
Make sure the asset you are sending is supported by the destination account and that both sides use the same network. A correct-looking address on the wrong network can still create a loss. The exact checks differ by chain and token, so consult the official instructions for the asset and wallet you use.
Use a small test when it is appropriate
Trezor’s missing-backup procedure includes testing the new receiving address with a small amount, described in its example as a few satoshis. Treat this as an optional verification step, not a guarantee. Confirm on the relevant network that the test arrived at the new wallet before sending the remainder. The test itself still incurs the applicable fee and can be exposed to network congestion or an address error.
Transfer every relevant holding
- Inventory the affected wallet. List each account and asset you actually control, including balances that may not appear on the first screen.
- Check special positions. Look for tokens, staking positions, multisig arrangements, smart-contract permissions, and chain-specific accounts. The cited vendor guidance says to move funds but does not enumerate every product or chain, so use the official instructions for each one.
- Send the test transaction if useful, then verify arrival. Confirm the destination on the device and check the transaction on the relevant network.
- Send the remaining assets in manageable batches. Account for network fees, minimum balances, withdrawal rules, and any transaction-size or timing limits imposed by the asset or service.
- Confirm the new wallet controls the assets. Check balances and transaction status from the official wallet interface or the relevant chain’s official tools.
Costs vary by asset, network conditions, and any service used to move the funds. You may pay a fee for the test and another for each subsequent transfer; an exchange or other service may also impose withdrawal rules or fees. Do not promise yourself that a transfer is reversible or risk-free. A mistaken address, unsupported network, insufficient fee, or compromised computer can still cause a loss. If an asset requires a product-specific migration or unstaking process, follow that product’s official documentation before moving it.
Keep a written checklist of accounts already moved and transactions still pending, but do not include the old or new recovery words in that checklist. The goal is to avoid overlooking a secondary account without creating another digital copy of key material.
Compare recovery with creating a new wallet
| Decision factor | Recover the existing wallet | Create a new wallet and transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Backup status | Appropriate only when the backup is still believed private | Required when the phrase, backup, or private keys may be exposed |
| What happens to the keys | The same keys are restored on replacement hardware | New keys and a new backup control the destination addresses |
| Old device access | Useful when the device is damaged but the backup remains private | Move funds while you still have access if the device is lost or the backup is missing |
| Fees and operational work | No asset transfer is needed merely to restore access | Transfers require network fees and may require asset- or service-specific steps |
| Security result after phrase exposure | Does not remove another person’s access to the copied phrase | Changes control to keys that were not derived from the exposed phrase |
Do not describe recovery of the same phrase as key rotation. It restores the old wallet; it does not make exposed keys secret again.
What to do with the suspected wallet afterward
Once assets have been moved, label the old wallet and backup as compromised and never use that phrase as a secure destination again. Do not send new funds to an address derived from it. Keep records needed to reconcile transfers, fees, and tax reporting, but do not preserve an electronic copy of the old phrase.
If some holdings cannot be moved immediately, treat the old wallet as exposed and prioritize the assets that can be transferred. Follow the official instructions for locked, staked, multisignature, or contract-controlled positions rather than guessing. The fact that one account moved successfully does not prove that every account or token in the wallet has moved.
After the move, review the new wallet’s receiving addresses on the device whenever you fund it. Keep the new backup offline and private, and make sure anyone who may handle the device understands that support personnel, exchanges, and software tools must never receive the words.
Recognize phishing and fake support during the response
- No legitimate helper needs your recovery phrase. A request for the words, a photo of them, or a screen recording is a request for control of the wallet.
- Do not trust urgency alone. Attackers may claim that a “security team” must migrate your funds or validate your phrase immediately.
- Navigate to support independently. Use the manufacturer’s official site or application that you find yourself, and verify the device-specific emergency instructions.
- Review every approval on the hardware display. Do not approve a transaction merely because the computer or phone labels it as a recovery transfer.
Trezor’s terms in December 2025 direct users who believe a wallet backup may have been compromised to the Emergency Section of the manual. Its warning about purported support agents is consistent with the broader rule: support can explain a procedure, but it must not receive the backup.

Limits of the response
Moving to a new wallet protects against future control through the exposed phrase, but it cannot undo a transaction that has already been confirmed on a blockchain. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal recovery guarantee, a standard response for every malware or tampering scenario, or a promise that funds can be returned. For an unexpected transaction, suspected coercion, or potentially altered device, preserve relevant transaction details and contact the manufacturer and the affected chain or service through official channels.

Emergency checklist
- Stop using and sharing the suspected phrase.
- Record which accounts, chains, tokens, staking positions, and multisig arrangements may be affected.
- Obtain or prepare a trusted hardware-wallet setup through official channels.
- Generate a completely new wallet and backup on the device; never import the exposed phrase.
- Write and verify the new backup offline, then store it privately.
- Verify each new receiving address on the hardware display.
- Use a small test transfer when appropriate and confirm its arrival.
- Move the remaining holdings, allowing for fees, network requirements, and service limits.
- Use official manufacturer emergency instructions for lost, damaged, tampered, or malfunctioning devices.
- Ignore anyone requesting the recovery words, even if they claim to be support.
Frequently asked questions
Is changing the PIN enough?
No. A PIN or device reset does not revoke keys that may already have been copied. If the phrase or private keys were exposed, generate a new wallet and transfer the assets.
Can I restore the old phrase on a new device first and move funds later?
That may restore access, but it does not make the old keys safe. If you can still operate the affected wallet, create the new wallet first and use it as the destination for the transfer.
What if I only lost the backup and never showed it to anyone?
If the device still works, Trezor’s guidance is to create a new wallet and move the funds while you have access. A missing backup cannot be regenerated, so do not wait for the device to fail as well.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What if the hardware device is damaged but the backup is private?
Recovery on replacement hardware may restore access when the backup is genuinely still private. If there is any doubt that the words were exposed, use a new wallet and transfer instead.
Should I send all assets in one transaction?
Not necessarily. A small test can confirm the destination, and manageable batches may make it easier to check fees, networks, and arrival. The correct sequence depends on the asset and service; every transfer still carries operational and network risk.
Do I need to move tokens and staking positions too?
Inventory every account and asset, including tokens and staking or multisignature positions. Vendor instructions do not cover every chain or product, so follow the official migration, unstaking, or contract-specific procedure for each holding.
Can a confirmed unauthorized transaction be reversed?
Do not assume so. A new wallet prevents future control through the exposed phrase but cannot undo a confirmed blockchain transaction. Contact the manufacturer and the affected chain or service through official channels.

Can support verify whether my phrase is valid?
Do not give the phrase to support or to a recovery tool. Use official setup and emergency documentation, and remember that a request for the words or a photograph is a phishing warning.
Is a test transfer proof that the wallet is secure?
No. It only helps verify that the address, asset, and network are correct. Check the destination on the device, confirm the test arrived, and then complete the remaining transfers with the same care.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the first step after a suspected seed-phrase compromise?
Stop entering or sharing the old phrase, treat the wallet as exposed, and prepare a trusted hardware-wallet setup to generate a completely new wallet and backup.
Does replacing a hardware wallet invalidate the old phrase?
No. Recovering the same phrase on replacement hardware restores the same keys. Only a new wallet followed by asset transfers changes the controlling keys.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould I tell hardware-wallet support my recovery words?
Never. Use the manufacturer’s official support channel, but do not disclose the phrase, a photo of it, or a screen recording.
What if my device is lost but I still have access to the wallet?
Create a new wallet and move the assets while the wallet remains usable. A missing backup cannot be regenerated.
How do I verify the new destination address?
Compare the receiving address in the wallet application with the address shown on the hardware wallet’s trusted display, where supported, and confirm the asset and network.
Are test transfers risk-free?
No. A small test can help verify the destination, but it still incurs fees and can be affected by an address error, wrong network, or congestion.
What if I see an unauthorized transaction?
Stop normal use, preserve transaction details, and follow the manufacturer’s emergency procedure while contacting the relevant chain or service through official channels. Do not assume reversal is possible.
The Bottom Line
If a recovery phrase may have been exposed, assume its keys are unsafe. Generate a new wallet and backup on a trusted hardware device, verify receiving addresses on the device, and transfer every holding you can. A reset, replacement device, or restored copy of the old phrase does not revoke an attacker’s access.
