A hardware wallet keeps private keys away from an internet-connected computer, reducing one important route to key theft. It cannot tell you whether a transaction is safe: you still need to protect your recovery phrase, verify addresses and transaction details on the device, and refuse requests you do not understand.
What a hardware wallet protects—and what it does not
A hardware wallet stores private keys offline and uses them to sign transactions. If a connected computer is compromised, keeping the keys off that computer can reduce the chance an attacker steals them directly. But the computer or phone can still show misleading information or connect you to a malicious site, and the device cannot prevent you from approving a harmful transaction.
Think of the device as a protected signing tool, not a guarantee that a transaction is legitimate. Security depends on both safeguarding the keys and checking what you authorize.
Set up the device and protect its recovery phrase
Use a genuine device and follow its manufacturer’s official setup process. Ledger advises that the recovery phrase should be generated by you; do not use a device that arrives preconfigured with a phrase. Write the phrase down during setup and store it in a physically secure place. Anyone who obtains it may be able to restore the wallet and move its funds.

- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Keep the phrase private. Never enter it on a website or give it to someone claiming to be support.
- Keep it offline. Ethereum.org says not to store it on a computer, and Trezor warns against making digital copies.
- Consider both physical and digital risks. An online backup can be exposed through malware or account compromise; a physical backup can be found, stolen, or destroyed. Choose storage that fits your circumstances rather than assuming one location is safest for everyone.

Use official software and update channels
Your computer or phone remains part of the risk surface even when the private key stays on the hardware wallet. Use official vendor channels to download wallet software and updates. Trezor recommends verifying websites and software updates and downloading Trezor Suite from its official website. Bookmark a legitimate wallet site you have verified instead of following unsolicited links in messages, ads, or pop-ups.

Check addresses and transaction details before signing
Verify receiving and destination addresses on the device
When receiving funds or preparing a transfer, compare the complete intended address with the address shown on the hardware wallet’s own display. A compromised computer can substitute an address on screen. Ethereum.org also advises checking the recipient address carefully because Ethereum transactions are irreversible. Do not rely only on a copied address or the computer display.

Read the action and spending permission
For a smart-contract request, inspect the details shown by the wallet and device before approving. Check the asset, recipient or contract, requested action, and any spending permission the screen presents. Ethereum.org recommends limiting spending permission to the amount needed for the task rather than granting an unlimited allowance; an unlimited approval can let a contract drain funds.

If the details are hidden, contradictory, or unclear, do not sign yet. Seek reliable documentation through an independently verified source and proceed only when you understand what the request authorizes.
Recognize blind signing and the limits of Clear Signing
Blind signing means approving a transaction when the device cannot present its meaning in a readable, useful form. You may see unreadable data or an incomplete explanation rather than the action you are authorizing. If you cannot understand the request, stop instead of treating an approval prompt as routine.

Ledger describes blind signing as an advanced setting needed for some smart-contract transactions, such as certain decentralized-exchange token swaps, and recommends turning it off after use. Its guidance says updates can disable the setting automatically; that behavior should not be assumed for other device brands.
Clear Signing aims to display supported transaction details in plain language on a signer’s secure screen. Ledger’s developer documentation describes using metadata associated with ERC-7730, while the Ethereum Foundation announced an open Clear Signing effort on May 12, 2026. Availability depends on compatible wallet support and relevant metadata or integration, so it is not available for every transaction or chain. A clearer display helps you inspect a request; it does not decide whether the action is safe.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Handle support messages, links, and unexpected tokens cautiously
Treat unsolicited contact about your wallet as hostile until you verify it independently. Trezor says a request for your wallet backup, PIN, password, or code is a scam. Do not engage with a caller or use links supplied in a message; navigate to the vendor’s official support channel yourself. No legitimate support interaction requires you to disclose your recovery phrase.
Phishing messages may lead to imitation sites that ask for a seed phrase or prompt you to send assets. An unexpected token or airdrop can also be used to lure you into connecting a wallet and approving a transaction. Do not visit a claim site or sign merely because an asset appeared in your wallet. Inspect any requested on-chain action first.

Choose a device by fit, not a promised ranking
A hardware wallet is the relevant type of product for keeping private keys off an internet-connected computer, but the available guidance does not establish a best model or a current model-by-model comparison. Before choosing one, check:
- Whether it supports the assets, networks, and wallet software you intend to use.
- Whether its display makes the recipient and transaction details you need to verify understandable.
- How its recovery workflow works and how you can confirm that your backup is recorded correctly.
- Whether its connection method, operating-system compatibility, and physical design suit how often you will use it.
- How the vendor distributes support and updates; vendor security claims are not the same as independent verification.
Features and Clear Signing support vary by device and wallet integration, so check current documentation for the exact setup you plan to use. A hardware wallet is not unhackable, does not identify every scam, and cannot replace a secure recovery backup or careful signing.
