Act as though the wallet is compromised until you can prove otherwise. Stop sending money, preserve transaction evidence, contact the provider through its official channel, and report the incident. If a seed phrase or private key was exposed, create a new wallet on a clean device and move every remaining asset immediately; do not try to “repair” the old wallet. If the problem was a malicious dApp, review and revoke token approvals, while remembering that revocation does not protect a wallet whose signing key has leaked.

Recovery is uncertain. The FTC says cryptocurrency payments do not have the same legal protections as card payments, and the FBI warns that people promising guaranteed recovery may be running a second scam. The safest response is rapid containment, careful evidence preservation, and a replacement wallet with stronger account and device security.

First 30 minutes: contain the damage

Use this order before deleting accounts, resetting devices, or arguing with a supposed support agent. A blockchain transfer normally cannot be reversed by your wallet app, so speed and accurate records matter.

  1. Stop sending money. Do not pay an extra “tax,” withdrawal fee, verification deposit, or security charge. FBI Operation Level Up guidance also says not to pay a recovery service that guarantees it can return funds.
  2. Preserve evidence. Record each wallet address, blockchain network, asset, amount, date and time, and transaction hash or ID. Save exchange usernames, suspicious URLs, screenshots, emails, chat logs, phone numbers, and the exact wording of demands before closing or changing accounts.
  3. Contact the provider through an official channel. Use the exchange, wallet maker, or ATM operator’s published website or app—not a link in a message or a social-media account claiming to be support. Ask what account lockdown, fraud review, or transaction-monitoring options are available.
  4. Report promptly. File a report with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3.gov) and the relevant local law-enforcement agency. Report consumer fraud to the Federal Trade Commission when applicable. Include the transaction details and copies of evidence.

Do not move funds merely because someone tells you to use a “safe” wallet. An unsolicited helper who requests your seed phrase, private key, password, one-time code, or remote access is attempting to gain control.

Evidence checklist

  • Sending and receiving addresses, including the network (for example, the specific chain rather than just the token name).
  • Asset type and precise amount sent or drained.
  • Transaction hash or ID for every relevant transfer.
  • Date and time, with your time zone if known.
  • Wallet, exchange, ATM, dApp, and account usernames involved.
  • Suspicious domains, app names, QR codes, advertisements, and phone numbers.
  • Screenshots and exported chats showing promises, instructions, and payment requests.

The FBI identifies the addresses, amount and type, date and time, and transaction ID or hash as the most important transaction information. Keep an untouched copy, then work from duplicates when annotating files.

Decide what was exposed

The correct fix depends on whether an attacker obtained a signing secret, gained access to a device or account, or only received permission through a smart contract. Treat these cases differently; revoking an approval cannot replace migrating from a leaked private key.

Seed phrase or private key exposed

A seed phrase is the master recovery secret for the wallet. Once another person has seen or copied it, assume the wallet is permanently compromised, even if no funds have disappeared yet. On a clean, updated device, create a completely new wallet with a newly generated seed phrase. Transfer the remaining assets to the new addresses immediately, beginning with assets that are easiest for the attacker to drain or that have the greatest value.

The Singapore Police Force states: “If your wallet’s seed phrase has been compromised, transfer all remaining assets to a new, uncompromised wallet immediately.” Never enter the old phrase into a website, paste it into a support chat, send it to a person claiming to help, or import it into the replacement wallet. A hardware wallet can reduce future online exposure, but it cannot make an exposed phrase secret again.

Malicious dApp or token approval

A decentralized application can receive a token allowance that lets a smart contract spend specified tokens from your address. If you connected to a fake mint, giveaway, investment site, or other malicious dApp, inspect connected applications and token approvals in your wallet interface or through a reputable blockchain explorer. Revoke suspicious permissions so the contract can no longer spend tokens under that delegated allowance.

The Singapore Police Force advises users to “review and revoke any suspicious token approvals using your wallet interface or a blockchain explorer.” The European Banking Authority also recommends revoking suspicious smart-contract permissions. Revocation itself is an on-chain transaction, so confirm the network, fee, contract address, and wallet prompt before signing. If the private key or seed phrase was exposed, perform the migration described above as well; an attacker with the key can sign new transactions regardless of an approval you revoke.

Device, email, exchange, or password-manager access

If the scammer accessed your phone or computer, or if an email or exchange account was taken over, secure those entry points before relying on the wallet again. A thief who cannot sign directly may still regain access through a compromised email session, browser extension, password manager, cloud backup, or recovery phone number.

Move assets to a new wallet safely

Use a device you trust. If malware or remote-control software may be present, use a different, fully updated device rather than trying to clean and reuse the suspect one for the transfer.

  1. Install operating-system and browser updates, and confirm that legitimate security software is active.
  2. Obtain the wallet application or hardware device from the maker’s official distribution channel or an authorized seller. Avoid links delivered in chats, advertisements, or search-result lookalikes.
  3. Initialize a new wallet yourself. Let it generate a new recovery phrase; do not choose a phrase supplied by another person or a website.
  4. Write the new phrase offline and store it where it cannot be photographed, synced, or accessed by unauthorized people. Do not save it in email, cloud notes, screenshots, or a browser password field.
  5. Verify the new receiving address on the wallet device or trusted display before sending. Check the first and last characters and the network; a valid-looking address on the wrong chain can still lose funds.
  6. Send a small test amount when the network and asset support it, then confirm the transaction on the intended chain. Transfer the remainder only after the destination and balance are correct.
  7. After the migration, stop using the old wallet for funds. Keep its addresses and transaction history as evidence, but do not treat it as a storage wallet.

Network fees, minimum deposits, memo or tag requirements, and confirmation times vary by asset and provider. Read the destination provider’s current deposit instructions before sending; a missing memo or an unsupported network can create a separate recovery problem.

Revoke approvals and disconnect risky applications

Wallet connection and token allowance are separate controls. Disconnecting a site may remove its session from the interface, but it does not necessarily cancel an allowance already recorded by a smart contract.

  1. Open the wallet’s connected-sites or permissions screen, and remove applications you do not recognize or no longer use.
  2. Use a reputable explorer or the wallet’s approval-management feature to find allowances for the affected address and network.
  3. Match each permission to a known contract and asset. Revoke suspicious or unnecessary allowances; do not approve a new “revoke” transaction from an unknown website.
  4. Review the transaction details on the wallet’s confirmation screen. Sign only the revocation you intended, and wait for the chain confirmation.
  5. Repeat the review on every network where the address was used. A permission on one chain does not automatically cover another.

Approval management limits delegated spending, but it does not erase a signed transfer, freeze a thief’s address, or protect a leaked key. If funds continue moving after revocation, stop using the address and complete migration from a clean device.

Secure the computer, phone, and accounts around the wallet

Clean the device

  • Run a malware scan with updated, legitimate security software and remove detected threats.
  • Update the operating system, browser, wallet software, and hardware-wallet firmware using official channels.
  • Uninstall unfamiliar browser extensions, remote-access tools, and applications installed around the time of the incident.
  • Change passwords after the device is clean, or from a separate trusted device if infection is still possible.
  • Encrypt computers, phones, removable media, and sensitive files. Keep a secure external or vetted cloud backup that does not contain an unprotected seed phrase.

Harden email, exchange, and password-manager accounts

  • Use a unique, long password for every critical account; never reuse the wallet password for email or an exchange.
  • Enable multifactor authentication. A hardware security key is a strong option for email, exchange, and password-manager accounts; FTC guidance lists hardware tokens as an MFA method.
  • Revoke unknown sessions, API keys, app passwords, and recovery methods. Check forwarding rules in email for hidden interception.
  • Replace a phone number or recovery email that the attacker may control, and review account alerts for changes you did not make.
  • Do not approve an unexpected login prompt. Repeated prompts can be an attempt to make you accept a fraudulent sign-in.

Choosing a safer storage setup

For significant holdings, a hardware cryptocurrency wallet is the clearest physical product category to evaluate. The Singapore Police Force advises storing cryptocurrencies in hardware wallets where possible because they are less vulnerable to online attacks. This reduces exposure of signing operations; it does not protect against a stolen recovery phrase, a fraudulent transaction you approve, or a compromised destination address.

Compare setups on the factors that affect your use

Evaluation area Questions to answer before buying or adopting it
Networks and assets Does it support every chain and asset you actually hold, including required address formats and transaction types?
Transaction screening Can you clearly verify the recipient, amount, network, contract, and token operation on a trusted device display before signing?
Recovery and backup How is the recovery phrase generated, backed up, and restored, and what happens if the device is lost or damaged?
Updates Are firmware and companion-app updates delivered through a documented, verifiable process?
Independent documentation Does the maker publish security architecture, vulnerability handling, and recovery procedures clearly enough for independent scrutiny?
Supply-chain trust Can you buy from the manufacturer or an authorized seller, check packaging, and initialize the device yourself?
Compatibility Will it work with the exchanges and dApps you use without requiring you to expose the recovery phrase?

Keep the new recovery phrase offline and separate from the device. Anyone who obtains both the device and its unlock information, or who obtains the phrase alone, may be able to take the assets.

Report the incident with useful detail

Submit reports as soon as the evidence is organized; do not wait for a perfect explanation. The FBI’s IC3 guidance asks for wallet addresses, amount and asset type, date and time, and transaction ID or hash. Add the suspected scammer’s contact details, domains, social profiles, screenshots, and a chronological description of what happened.

Report to IC3.gov, your local law-enforcement agency, and the FTC when the conduct is consumer fraud. Contact an exchange or ATM operator through its official support route and provide the same hashes and addresses. A provider may be able to flag an account or cooperate with an investigation, but it cannot promise that a confirmed blockchain transfer will be reversed.

What recovery can—and cannot—mean

Cryptocurrency transfers generally lack the card-payment protections that allow a chargeback. The FTC states: “Cryptocurrency payments don’t have the same legal protections as credit and debit cards, so it can be hard to get your money back.” No government agency guarantees reimbursement for a compromised wallet.

Investigators or a regulated provider may sometimes identify funds when they reach a service that can lawfully freeze an account, but that possibility is not a promise of recovery. The FBI’s 24 August 2023 warning says: “Be wary of anyone claiming they can recover your funds as this may be another scam.” Operation Level Up likewise advises victims not to pay services that claim they can recover lost funds.

Recognize a recovery scam

  • The person contacted you first after seeing a public complaint or transaction.
  • They demand an upfront fee, tax, bond, wallet-activation payment, or remote-access session.
  • They request your seed phrase, private key, one-time code, or password.
  • They promise a guaranteed result, claim to be a government agent, or pressure you to act immediately.
  • They direct you to a new wallet or website that they control.

Save these messages as evidence, stop communicating, and report the attempted recovery scam through the same official channels. Do not send a second payment to prove that the first payment can be released.

After containment: a practical security routine

  • Keep only the funds needed for active dApp use in a hot wallet; hold longer-term funds in a separately secured wallet where practical.
  • Read every signing request rather than approving transactions from a pop-up or blind prompt.
  • Review connected sites and token allowances periodically, especially after using unfamiliar applications.
  • Use separate browser profiles or devices for high-value signing and ordinary browsing.
  • Store recovery instructions for a trusted successor without exposing the phrase to online services.
  • Maintain offline records of wallet addresses and transaction history so an incident can be reported quickly.

These practices reduce future exposure, but they cannot undo an already confirmed transfer. The decisive safeguards after this incident are a genuinely new signing secret, a clean device, protected accounts, and skepticism toward anyone asking for money or credentials.
