To compare nearby airports in one flight search, use Google ITA Matrix to enter airport codes separated by commas, or use Google Flights’ nearby-airports control. These are airport alternatives for the same trip—not the same thing as a multi-city itinerary with different legs.
Search interchangeable airports for the same trip
Start with the airport nearest your origin or destination, then add nearby alternatives if the search tool supports them. In Google ITA Matrix, enter multiple airport codes separated by commas in the origin or destination field. Google’s Matrix overview documents this option for flexible airport choices.
In Google Flights, enter one airport, then use the location icon to look for nearby airports and add options to the search. Google explains this workflow in its multiple-airport help. Google Flights also has an Airports insight that can show fares for alternative airports.

- Add airport alternatives using comma-separated codes in ITA Matrix or the nearby-airports control in Google Flights.
- Keep dates, passenger count, cabin, and other search assumptions the same while comparing results.
- Compare the full itinerary and price, not only the first fare displayed.
- Before paying, confirm the itinerary and charges with the airline or booking provider handling the reservation.
Google documents these airport-selection controls. Do not assume that every flight-search service accepts multiple airports as alternatives in a single origin or destination field.

Do not confuse airport alternatives with multi-city search
Several airport choices for one origin or destination answer, “Which airport should I use for this trip?” A multi-city search instead builds a trip from separate legs, each with its own route and dates.
Google ITA Matrix has a Multi City tab and an Add Flight control for adding itinerary legs. Skyscanner says its multi-city search is available on web and mobile and allows up to six legs; its help page was updated March 20, 2026. KAYAK also documents a multi-city search of up to six legs, but that feature does not establish that it accepts interchangeable airports for one leg.
Rank #2
Use multi-city search when the trip itself has multiple destinations or separately defined segments. Skyscanner’s instructions for searching multiple destinations describe choosing a departure airport, destination, and dates for each leg. Google’s Matrix overview explains its Multi City and Add Flight controls, while KAYAK’s search help covers its multi-city option.
Compare the whole itinerary, not just the fare
With the same trip details held constant, assess whether a cheaper airport option is still practical once the rest of the journey is considered. Check:

- Schedule: departure and arrival times, total duration, and number of stops.
- Airport logistics: ground travel to the alternative airport, and any airport change during a connection.
- Fare inclusions: baggage and other charges that may be added by the airline or booking provider.
- Ticket construction: whether the itinerary is one booking or separate tickets, including self-transfers.
Google says flight prices update approximately every 24 hours; prices can change before booking, not all airlines or available flights are included, and baggage or other fees may apply. The displayed air-transport price includes VAT/GST and airport taxes, according to Google Flights’ help. Treat the fare shown in search as a comparison point, then verify the final price and terms with the seller.
Take extra care with separate tickets and self-transfers
A low fare may depend on buying separate tickets rather than one protected itinerary. Google warns that separate-ticket bookings may have to be purchased individually, can involve a change fee for each ticket, and may require collecting and rechecking baggage.

KAYAK’s self-transfer guidance notes that travelers may need to transfer independently, check in again, clear security again as required, and pass through passport control at a transit airport. Whether bags are checked through varies by airline. Allow enough time for the transfer and confirm responsibilities and connection terms with the airline or booking provider before choosing separate tickets.

| Google Flights | Use the location icon to find nearby airports and consult its Airports insight for alternative-airport fares. Multiple-airport help; Google Flights help | Nearby-airport selection is not a multi-city itinerary. |

Finish the search with the booking provider’s terms
Flight-search services may direct you to an airline or online travel agency to book. Review the provider’s final price, baggage rules, ticket conditions, and transfer responsibilities before confirming. A search result alone does not guarantee that the displayed fare remains available at checkout.
