The most reliable way to find a known episode is to open its podcast, choose See All Episodes (or Episodes on Mac), and search the episode list. Use Apple Podcasts’ general search when you are still identifying the show, and use transcript search when the word or phrase you remember was spoken inside the episode rather than included in its title. Transcript search only works when Apple provides a transcript for that episode, language, and region.

Choose the search route that matches what you know

Apple Podcasts has several search scopes. Choosing the right one matters because a search of the entire service and a search inside one show do not return the same set of results.

Route Use it when What it searches Important limitation
Search within a show You know the podcast and want an episode whose title, guest, or topic matches a word or phrase. The selected show’s episode list. You must open the show and its full episode list first.
General Podcasts search You are still trying to identify the show or episode by title, person, category, or topic. Apple Podcasts’ broader catalog; on Mac, results can also be scoped to Apple Podcasts or your Library. Results can include many shows and episodes, so a known show is easier to narrow from its own page.
Transcript search You remember something said during an episode, but that wording is not in the episode title or metadata. The available transcript for one episode. Transcripts are not provided for every episode, language, country, or region.

As a rule, start with the narrowest route you can use. If you know the show, search its episode list. If you know only a subject or guest, begin with general search. If you remember a sentence spoken in the program, open the episode’s transcript and search there.

Find an episode on iPhone

1. Open the podcast’s show page

  1. Open the Podcasts app.
  2. Search or browse for the show. General search can match a category, title, person, or topic.
  3. Tap the show to open its page.

If the show is already in your library, opening it from the Library can be quicker than searching the entire catalog. The goal is to reach the show page, not to stop at a general result.

2. Open the complete episode list

  1. Scroll down on the show page.
  2. Tap See All Episodes.

This view is the show-level index. Searching here prevents unrelated podcasts from competing with the episode you want.

3. Search the episode list

  1. Tap the search field near the top of the episode list.
  2. Enter a word or phrase associated with the episode.
  3. Review the suggested matches that appear while you type.
  4. Tap the Search button on the keyboard to display all matching results.
  5. Tap the episode you want to open its details or begin playback.

Try a distinctive title word, a guest’s name, or a specific topic term. Apple’s documented instructions describe entering a word or phrase; they do not specify special operators, quotation syntax, or other advanced query commands.

What to do when the first results look incomplete

Suggestions shown as you type are not necessarily the complete result set. Pressing Search on the keyboard is the step that opens all matches for the text you entered. If the phrase is too broad, replace it with a less common title word or the guest’s name rather than adding several unsupported symbols or operators.

Find an episode on Mac

1. Open the show and its episode view

  1. Open Podcasts and search or browse for the show.
  2. Select the show.
  3. Click Episodes or See All Episodes, depending on the view available in your app.

The current Mac user guide used for these steps is labeled for macOS 27. Labels can change in later releases, but the distinction between a show’s episode list and app-wide search remains important.

2. Search the show’s episodes

  1. Click the search field near the top of the episode list.
  2. Type a word or phrase from the episode title, guest information, or subject.
  3. Choose a suggestion from the top hits, or press Return to show all matches.
  4. Select the matching episode.

Searching after opening Episodes keeps the query inside that show. This is usually faster and more accurate than entering the same words in the main Podcasts search box.

3. Understand Mac app-wide search scopes

Mac’s general search can return categories, channels, shows, and episodes. Depending on the view, results can be scoped to Apple Podcasts or to your own Library. That scope is separate from searching one show’s episode list:

  • Use the broader Apple Podcasts scope when you are discovering which show contains a subject or guest.
  • Use the Library scope when you expect the episode to be one you have saved, downloaded, or otherwise added to your account.
  • Use the show’s Episodes view when you already know the podcast and need one item from its catalog.

If the desired match is not among the initial hits, scroll farther down the results page. Apple notes that additional results may appear below the first group.

Search Apple Podcasts generally when you do not know the show

General search is appropriate when your starting information is a person, topic, category, or partial title rather than a known podcast. Enter the identifying word or phrase in the main Podcasts search field. As you type, top hits appear; submit the search with the keyboard’s Search button on iPhone or Return on Mac to open the full result set.

From the results, select the show, channel, or episode that best fits your query. Once you identify the likely show, switch to its own episode list and search there. This two-stage process—discover the show broadly, then narrow within it—reduces false matches from similarly named programs.

Use filters and sorting to browse a long episode list

Searching is not the only way to narrow a show. Apple documents filters and sort controls in relevant episode and Library views. Available choices can include:

  • Video when you are looking specifically for video episodes.
  • Unplayed to limit browsing to episodes you have not finished.
  • Saved to show episodes you saved.
  • Downloaded to show episodes stored for offline playback.

The exact filter choices depend on the context of the show or Library view. Apple says filters do not prevent you from searching for any episode of a show, so a filter is a browsing aid rather than a replacement for the episode-list search field.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sort order can also help when you know approximately when the episode appeared. Choose newest-to-oldest to look for a recent release, or oldest-to-newest to work forward from the beginning of a series. Sorting changes the display order; it does not change the words that search can match.

Search for a word spoken inside an episode

A title search cannot find every discussion. A guest may say a term that never appears in the episode title, description, or visible metadata. When the phrase you remember was spoken, transcript search is the appropriate fallback—provided Apple has a transcript.

On iPhone

  1. Open the episode’s information or start playing it in Now Playing.
  2. Open the available transcript.
  3. While viewing the transcript, swipe up and tap Search from Now Playing, or use Search Transcript from the episode details screen.
  4. Enter the word or phrase.
  5. Use the available options for Whole Word and capitalization matching when you need a narrower match.
  6. Tap a matching paragraph to jump playback to that point in the episode.

Transcript search is useful for locating a passage after you have identified the episode. It is not a catalog search across every episode in Apple Podcasts; you open an individual episode first, then search the transcript attached to it.

On Mac

  1. Play an episode, or select one while browsing.
  2. Open the episode’s Transcript section.
  3. Choose Search Transcript.
  4. Enter the word or phrase.
  5. Turn on Whole Word or Match Case if those distinctions matter.
  6. Select a result to move to that point in the transcript and playback.

Transcript availability

Apple says transcript availability varies by language and country or region. An episode can therefore appear in search while having no searchable transcript. If you do not see a transcript section or search control, the documented in-app transcript workflow is not available for that episode. In that situation, return to title, guest, topic, date, and show-level searching rather than assuming the transcript is hidden behind another setting.

Troubleshoot a missing episode

You searched the whole app and got too many results

Open the suspected show, choose See All Episodes or Episodes, and repeat the search there. A show-level query is restricted to that show’s episode list, while app-wide search can return categories, channels, shows, and episodes from across the service.

You used a common word and found nothing useful

Replace a generic term with a distinctive word from the title, the guest’s name, or a specific subject. Search one meaningful phrase at a time. Apple’s instructions support ordinary words and phrases but do not document Boolean operators or special syntax, so relying on undocumented punctuation is unlikely to improve the result.

The episode seems to be missing from the first page

On Mac, scroll farther down the results page because Apple notes that more matches can appear below the initial hits. On iPhone, submit the query with the keyboard’s Search button instead of relying only on the suggestions displayed while typing.

You know roughly when it was released

Use the episode list’s sort order to browse newest-to-oldest or oldest-to-newest. If the view offers filters such as All Episodes, Unplayed, Saved, or Downloaded, select the one that matches your situation before browsing. Keep in mind that filter availability depends on the current context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You remember a sentence but not the title

First identify likely episodes by show, guest, or topic. Then open each candidate’s transcript and use Search Transcript. Whole-word and case options can reduce accidental matches. If no transcript is available, Apple’s documented instructions do not provide an alternate in-app transcript search for that episode.

The show has several similarly named episodes

Search for a guest or unusually specific subject term rather than a broad word such as “interview” or “news.” After opening a candidate, check its episode details and transcript, when present, before starting playback from the beginning.

A practical decision process

  1. Know the show and part of the title? Open the show, choose See All Episodes or Episodes, and search the episode list.
  2. Know only a person, category, or topic? Use general Podcasts search to identify the show or episode, then narrow the results from that show’s episode list.
  3. Know words that were spoken? Open a likely episode and search its transcript, if Apple provides one for your language and region.
  4. Have a date or playback-state clue? Use newest-to-oldest or oldest-to-newest sorting and any applicable filters such as Saved or Downloaded.
  5. Still no match? Try a more distinctive word or phrase, submit the complete search, and scroll through additional Mac results instead of assuming the first screen is exhaustive.

Examples of effective searches

Example: a known show and a guest

Suppose you know the podcast but remember only that a particular guest appeared. Open the show, enter the guest’s surname in the episode-list search field, and submit the full search. If several episodes match, add a distinctive topic word from the conversation.

Example: a topic but no show

If you remember a subject but not the podcast, enter that subject in the main Podcasts search. Review the returned shows and episodes, open the most likely show, and repeat the query in its episode list. This prevents unrelated catalog results from obscuring the episode you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example: a phrase spoken during the program

If you remember a sentence that was said but never appeared in the title, identify likely episodes by show or guest first. Open the transcript, search the phrase, and tap the matching paragraph to jump playback directly to that passage. If the transcript is unavailable, title and metadata searches are the documented in-app options.

What can change between devices and software versions

The current iPhone instructions and the Mac guide labeled for macOS 27 use slightly different labels and controls. On iPhone, the full episode list is reached through See All Episodes and the keyboard action is Search. On Mac, the corresponding entry may be Episodes or See All Episodes, and the keyboard action is Return.

Filters, Library scopes, transcript controls, and the exact placement of search fields can vary by view and software release. If a label is not visible, look for the show’s full episode list, the episode’s details, or the Transcript section rather than treating a different label as a different feature. Transcript availability can also change with language and regional support.

Quick checklist

  • Open the show before searching when you already know which podcast published the episode.
  • Use See All Episodes on iPhone or Episodes/See All Episodes on Mac.
  • Enter a distinctive title word, guest name, or topic phrase.
  • Submit the query with Search on iPhone or Return on Mac to reveal all matches.
  • Use general search only when you are still identifying the show or episode.
  • Use filters and chronological sorting to browse a long list.
  • Search a transcript for words spoken inside an episode, when a transcript is available.
  • Remember that transcript support varies by language and country or region.
