Use Google Scholar or Semantic Scholar to identify the paper, then follow the record to a publisher, university repository, library, or other documented full-text location. For a paper you already know, search its DOI in OpenAlex or use Unpaywall to locate an open copy. Before downloading or reusing anything, confirm the title, authors, year, version, host and license. A link marked free to read is not automatically permission to republish, adapt or redistribute the paper.
What “legally access” means for a research paper
Legal access has two separate questions. First, can you read a copy without bypassing a paywall, stolen credentials or an access-control system? Second, does the copy’s license allow what you plan to do with it, such as quote it, share the file, translate it or include figures in a new work?
Discovery services answer neither question by themselves. Google Scholar and Semantic Scholar index scholarly records and point to possible access routes; they do not grant a subscription or guarantee that every linked file is authorized for every use. OpenAlex defines open access broadly as a location where the full text can be read without payment or login. It records license information separately because free reading and reuse rights are different properties.

A reliable search-and-access workflow
- Search broadly. Start with a topic phrase, distinctive words from the title, an author name, or the DOI in Google Scholar or Semantic Scholar. Both services cover large collections of scholarly material, but their records and links can differ.
- Confirm the record. Compare the title, complete author list, publication year, venue and DOI where one is provided. Search engines may group a preprint, conference paper, accepted manuscript and journal article together, even though their text and publication status differ.
- Open the available routes. Check the publisher page, your library link, a university or subject repository, and any PDF or full-text link shown under the record. A result page is a pointer; the destination is what determines whether you can actually read the work.
- Use DOI-based open-copy tools. For a known article, enter the DOI in Unpaywall or search the work in OpenAlex. OpenAlex exposes an
is_oaflag, an open-access status and a best full-text URL when one is recorded. Unpaywall’s current documentation says its data now comes from the OpenAlex database and recommends OpenAlex for general searching and browsing. - Inspect the location and version. Determine whether the file is hosted by the publisher or a repository and whether it is a
publishedVersion,acceptedVersionorsubmittedVersion. A repository manuscript can be useful while still differing from the version of record. - Check the license for reuse. Look on the article page, the PDF’s first or last page, the repository record and any rights statement. If no license is identified, treat the file as readable but do not assume that copying, adapting or redistributing it is permitted.
- Use legitimate subscription routes when necessary. Sign in through your institution’s library, follow a library resolver link, or use the publisher’s purchase option. Semantic Scholar documents integrations such as GetFTR and LibKey that can connect a record to subscription content available through an institution.
- Record what you used. Save the DOI, the host URL, the date you accessed it, the version label and the license. This prevents you from citing a manuscript as if it were the final article and gives collaborators a reproducible access path.
Which tool should you use?

Use more than one service when a paper matters. Google Scholar may find a repository copy that a publisher search does not surface; OpenAlex may expose the repository location and version metadata; your library may unlock the publisher’s final article.
How to search Google Scholar effectively
Start with distinctive text
Enter a short topic phrase first, then add a distinctive title phrase, author or organization. If you know the DOI, search the complete DOI in quotation marks. A title-only search can return reviews, corrections, conference presentations and papers with similar wording, so use the record fields to disambiguate.
Use the result’s access links
Google Scholar may show a PDF or HTML link on the right side of a result, a library link, or a “versions” link. Open each candidate and compare the bibliographic details. The service says it can locate a complete document through a library or the web, but the search result itself is not a license to read every destination.

The “all versions” view can reveal a preprint, a conference paper, an institutional repository manuscript and a publisher page. Prefer the publisher’s full text when it is identifiable and accessible, but label a preprint or manuscript accurately in your notes and citations. Different versions can contain changed methods, figures, pagination or conclusions.
Use citations and related works for discovery
When the first result is not the paper you need, follow its cited-by list, related articles and author profile. This is useful for finding a later correction, an earlier preprint or a companion dataset. Still return to the exact record and verify the DOI before treating a newly found file as the target paper.

How to use Semantic Scholar to reach full text
Open the paper detail page and inspect the access options below the abstract. A “View” link can point to a PDF, a full-text page or the publisher. If the destination asks for payment, return to the record and try another listed route rather than assuming that no legal copy exists.
When a library link appears
Institutional integrations can recognize that your library subscribes to the article. Sign in through the institution’s normal authentication flow, then confirm that the article title, authors and DOI match the record you began with.

Some records contain metadata only. Copy the DOI or exact title into OpenAlex, Unpaywall and your library catalogue. Search an author’s university repository or a subject repository using the title in quotation marks. A repository record may provide an accepted manuscript even when the publisher page remains toll-access.
Finding a free-to-read location with OpenAlex and Unpaywall
OpenAlex for broad checking
Search OpenAlex by title, author or DOI and open the work record. Examine the is_oa value, the OA status, the listed locations and the best full-text URL. Locations may be publisher-hosted or repository-hosted. The service’s selection logic generally prefers a publisher-hosted location and then newer versions, but you should still open the file and identify it yourself.
Unpaywall for a known DOI
Use the Unpaywall browser extension or DOI lookup when you already have a DOI and want a quick check for an open location. Treat the returned link as a lead. Confirm that it resolves to the same work, that the file is complete, and that the host is a legitimate publisher or repository.

Understand the OA status labels

These labels are classifications, not legal opinions. A “green” result can be perfectly suitable for reading while the repository’s terms restrict redistribution. A “bronze” page may be publicly readable but lack a clear reuse grant.
Version of record, accepted manuscript and preprint
Scholarly works commonly appear in several stages:
- Submitted manuscript: the version sent for review. It may lack peer-review changes.
- Accepted manuscript: the author’s revised text after acceptance, often before publisher formatting and copyediting.
- Published version: the version of record on the journal or publisher platform, with final pagination, figures and publication details.
- Preprint: a publicly posted version that may precede peer review or formal publication.
OpenAlex records these distinctions with version fields, and Google Scholar notes that it can group preprints and conference papers with a later journal publication. When citing or quoting, name the version you actually read. If a result combines versions, open the DOI and title page before relying on page numbers, equations or a specific figure.
Free to read is not the same as free to reuse
Open access can answer “Can I read this without paying?” It does not by itself answer “Can I copy, adapt or redistribute it?” A license such as a Creative Commons grant may allow some uses while requiring attribution, preserving the same license, or prohibiting commercial use or adaptations. Other files may carry a repository notice, publisher terms or no explicit license at all.
For a quotation in a normal article, follow the applicable quotation and attribution rules in your jurisdiction. For a full PDF shared with a class, translated text, adapted table or reused image, inspect the license for that specific material and comply with its conditions. Figures, photographs, datasets and third-party content can have separate rights even when the article itself is openly licensed.
Keep a copy of the rights statement with your project notes. If the license is missing or ambiguous, ask the rights holder or choose a source whose permissions clearly fit your planned use. Neither an is_oa flag nor a browser extension result is a blanket reuse authorization.

What to do when every result shows a paywall
Try the library route
Use your institution’s library search or resolver and sign in before opening the publisher page. A library subscription can provide lawful access even when no open copy is recorded. If you are off campus, follow the library’s approved proxy or single-sign-on process.
Check the publisher record
Look for an author manuscript link, supplementary repository link, or an option to purchase the article. Publisher pages sometimes expose an article in an open issue even when the journal’s general archive is paywalled.
Search by DOI in a second discovery service
Run the DOI through OpenAlex and Unpaywall, then inspect every listed location. Search the exact title in a university repository or subject archive. Make sure a similarly titled file is not a different edition, correction or conference abstract.
Ask for a lawful copy
Authors may share a manuscript through an institutional profile or respond to a direct request, subject to their publisher agreement. Use a normal contact channel and respect any conditions attached to the file.
If none of these routes works, record that no open location was identified and use the library or publisher option. Do not bypass authentication, scrape a restricted platform or use credentials that are not yours.

Using AI-assisted search without losing accuracy
AI features can help turn a research question into search terms, extract concepts from a paper record or suggest related works. They can also invent titles, merge authors with similar names or present a paywalled citation as if it were openly available. Treat an AI-generated citation as a lead, never as proof.
A verification loop
- Ask for candidate titles, authors, keywords or DOI patterns, not an unverified claim that a paper is free.
- Search each candidate in Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar or OpenAlex.
- Match the title, author list, year, venue and DOI against the source record.
- Open the supplied full-text location and check that it is the same work.
- Read the version label and license yourself.
- Save the source URL, access date and rights information with your citation.
Generative tools may summarize a paper they cannot legally retrieve or may rely on an abstract when you need the methods and results. For high-stakes work, read the actual document and verify every quoted number, table and conclusion against the file.
A practical decision tree
- You have only a topic: search Google Scholar and Semantic Scholar broadly, then use citations and related works to identify the canonical record.
- You have a title and author: confirm the DOI and compare grouped versions before choosing a download.
- You have a DOI: check OpenAlex and Unpaywall first, then your library and the publisher.
- You found a repository PDF: identify whether it is submitted, accepted or published, and read the repository or article license.
- You found a free publisher page with no license: read it if the access is legitimate, but do not infer permission to redistribute or adapt.
- You found only a paywall: use institutional authentication, a publisher purchase option or a lawful author-shared copy.
How much research is openly accessible?
OpenAlex Help Center reported approximately 121 million of roughly 322 million works as open access, or 37%, on a page last updated August 11, 2026. This is a platform-reported count under OpenAlex’s broad free-reading definition. It is not an independent census of every research paper and does not mean that 37% of works carry a license allowing every kind of reuse.

The figure also changes as records, links and classifications are updated. Use it as context for why an open copy is often discoverable, not as a promise that a particular title will have one.
Common failure modes and fixes

Legal and regional limits
Availability and permitted use depend on the country, institution, publisher agreement and the specific material in the file. A link that is lawful and accessible in one region may not be available in another. The workflow above helps you use documented access routes; it is not individualized legal advice and cannot establish that every returned location is lawful for every purpose.
When your intended use is commercial, involves redistribution, or includes images, data or substantial excerpts, obtain permission or professional legal advice if the license does not clearly cover the use.
Final checklist before you cite or share a paper
- Have you matched the exact title, authors, year, venue and DOI?
- Do you know whether you read a preprint, submitted manuscript, accepted manuscript or published version?
- Did the file come from a publisher, university or subject repository, library subscription or another clearly legitimate route?
- Did you distinguish free reading from permission to reuse?
- Did you read the article-level or repository license for any quotation, adaptation, figure or redistribution?
- Have you saved the access location, version and date so another reader can verify your source?
The dependable approach is simple: discover broadly, verify the record, follow a legitimate access link, identify the version and check the license before reuse. No single search engine or AI feature can guarantee all five steps for every paper.
