Preserve the evidence before you block, report, delete, or reply. Save the complete dating profile, the conversation that shows the sequence of events, any payment or contact details, and the original media. Record when and how you collected each item, keep untouched originals, hash them, and work only from copies. Then report the account to the dating service, the FTC and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3); contact your bank or payment provider immediately if money was sent.
A screenshot shows what appeared on your screen at a particular time. By itself, it does not prove who authored an account or guarantee courtroom admissibility. Its value is much stronger when combined with URLs or account IDs, the original device, platform exports, metadata, hash records and a clear chain-of-custody log. Rules differ by jurisdiction, so ask the investigating agency or a lawyer about a live case.
Act before the profile or chat disappears
Romance scams use a fabricated online identity to build trust and then obtain money or sensitive information. The FBI describes the scammer as creating “the illusion of a romantic or close relationship to manipulate and/or steal from the victim.” A common pattern identified by the FTC is moving a match off the dating platform, avoiding an in-person meeting, and later requesting money or promoting an investment.
- Preserve first. While it is safe to do so, capture the profile and conversation before blocking, deleting, reporting or confronting the account.
- Stop sending money or information. Do not pay a fee, provide bank credentials or identity documents, buy gift cards, transfer cryptocurrency, or send additional intimate material.
- Make a safety decision. If there are threats, stalking, extortion or intimate-image abuse, move to a safe place and contact local law enforcement. Do not warn the suspected scammer that you are collecting evidence.
- Report after preservation. Use the dating service’s report function, then report to the FTC and IC3. If a payment was made, call the bank, card issuer, wire service, gift-card company, payment app or cryptocurrency exchange immediately.
If opening a disappearing-message chat could notify the other person or erase content, take only the safest available steps and ask the platform or an investigator for guidance. Do not repeatedly reopen a disappearing chat merely to collect more images.

What to capture from a dating profile
Capture several overlapping frames if one screen cannot contain the whole page. Keep the display exactly as shown; do not crop or enhance the originals.
| Evidence area | What to include | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Display name, username or handle, age and location shown, verification badge, profile URL or account ID | Lets an investigator identify the account and distinguish it from similarly named users |
| Profile claims | Bio, occupation, employer or military claims, relationship status and other statements | Preserves the representations used to build trust |
| Images | Every visible profile photo, including captions or labels | Supports later comparison, reverse-image searching and reports of reused images |
| Conversation context | Messages from the earliest relevant contact through the latest request, with dates, times, delivery/read status and surrounding messages | Shows sequence rather than an isolated quotation |
| Requests and identifiers | Requests for money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, bank details, identity documents, intimate images, “investment” instructions, shipping fees or emergency help; phone numbers, email addresses, payment handles, wallet addresses, links and other usernames | Provides actionable leads for the platform, financial provider and investigators |
Include voice-note, video-call and attachment indicators. If the service offers a conversation or account export, save that export in its original format as well as taking screenshots. Record the exact navigation path used to obtain it. For a public profile, record the full URL. For a profile behind a login, record the account identifier and the precise path through the app or site instead of sharing your password.
How to take useful screenshots
On a phone or tablet
- Open the profile or conversation and wait for images, timestamps and labels to finish loading.
- Turn on the device’s visible date/time if it is normally hidden, but do not alter the content itself. A separate note with the collection time is more reliable than adding text to the image.
- Use the operating system’s screenshot shortcut. Take consecutive, slightly overlapping frames for long profiles or chats so the order is clear.
- Open each saved image once to confirm it is readable, then copy it to your archive without editing.
- For content that cannot be captured in one frame, make a screen recording that starts with the app or site identity and scrolls at a steady pace. Keep the original recording.
On a desktop browser
- Open the profile in a new window, note the browser and operating-system versions, and copy the full address-bar URL where one exists.
- Capture the visible page in multiple frames, including the address bar or account identifier in at least one frame.
- For a long page, use the browser’s built-in full-page capture only if it preserves the content accurately; verify that lazy-loaded images, timestamps and overlays were not omitted.
- Save the page or platform export when offered, but treat it as an additional artifact rather than a replacement for screenshots.
- Record the account used, collection time zone, app or site name and version (if displayed), and every export step.
When screenshots are blocked
Do not bypass a security control or use a tool that changes the content. A second device can photograph the screen if permitted and safe, but document that method and retain the original photograph. Ask the platform or an investigator how it wants the material submitted.

Preserve originals and build an evidence archive
1. Create a neutral case folder
Use an identifier that does not reveal the person’s name, such as 2026-10-16_case-001. A practical structure is:
2026-10-16_case-001/ originals/ screenshots/ recordings/ media/ exports/ working/ notes/ hash-manifest/ transfer-log/
Put untouched screenshots, recordings, downloaded media and platform exports under originals. Keep redactions, highlights and resized copies under working. Never overwrite an original.

- SuperSpeed USB 3.0 - Transfer all your confidential files and folders faster than ever before. Works on both PC & Mac
2. Make a collection note
For every item, record the local time and UTC offset (or UTC), device and operating system, app or browser and version when visible, account used, profile URL or account ID, and the steps taken. Note whether the item was a screenshot, screen recording, downloaded file or platform export.
3. Hash every original
NISTIR 8387 says it is best practice to hash digital images and other objects and store the resulting hashes separately from the image or file. A hash is a change-detection value, not proof that the person named in a profile created it. SHA-256 is a common, well-supported choice.
Recommended Free Tools
On macOS or Linux, run:
find originals -type f -print0 | sort -z | xargs -0 sha256sum > hash-manifest/sha256.txt
On Windows PowerShell, run:
Get-ChildItem -File -Recurse .originals | Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 | Export-Csv .hash-manifestsha256.csv -NoTypeInformation
Keep the manifest outside the folder it describes, protect it from casual edits, and generate a new manifest only when you intentionally add a new collection. If a file’s hash changes unexpectedly, preserve both versions and document what happened.
4. Protect and back up the archive
Use encrypted storage, a strong device passcode, multi-factor authentication where available, and access controls that limit the archive to people who need it. Keep at least one independent backup and document each copy or transfer. An encrypted USB flash drive or external drive can be practical when its actual security features are verified, but the drive itself does not establish authenticity or admissibility.
5. Keep a chain-of-custody log
NIST defines chain of custody as tracking movement through collection, safeguarding and analysis by recording the handler, date and time, and purpose of each transfer. A simple CSV or text log can contain:

The phone or computer containing the live conversation can provide context that a screenshot cannot, such as the logged-in account, app state and original files. Do not reset it, uninstall the app, clear its data or change settings unnecessarily. Preserve what is already visible, then follow the investigating agency’s instructions. This does not mean repeatedly opening a disappearing chat: repeated access can alter or destroy evidence and may create safety risks.
Report the scam and protect your finances
Dating platform
Submit the account through the service’s reporting flow after preserving the material. Attach the clearest originals or an unedited platform export in the format requested. Keep a copy of what you submitted and any case number or confirmation.
FTC
Report the fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC also advises notifying the dating app, talking with someone you trust, searching the person’s job plus “scammer,” and reverse-image searching the profile photo. Nearly 70,000 consumers reported romance scams and $1.3 billion in reported losses in 2022, according to an FTC 2023 statistic; that figure is reported consumer loss, not a measure of every incident.
FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center
The FBI’s romance-scam guidance directs victims to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) for internet-enabled fraud. Include account identifiers, URLs, dates, contact details, transaction records and your archive’s organization. Submit copies as requested and retain the originals.

Bank, payment service or exchange
Contact the provider immediately if money was sent. Preserve receipts, transaction IDs, wallet addresses, recipient details, wire records, gift-card numbers and related messages. Ask what reversal, recall or fraud-freeze options are available; speed can matter.
Threats, extortion or intimate-image abuse
Preserve threats and requests without negotiating or paying. Contact local law enforcement and the FBI, and seek victim-support advice. Do not forward intimate images unnecessarily; provide them only through a secure channel requested by the investigating agency.
What screenshots can and cannot prove
A screenshot is a contemporaneous record of what appeared on a screen. It can corroborate a timeline, preserve a profile before deletion and show the exact wording of a request. It does not, on its own, authenticate the author, prove that an account was controlled by the named person, establish that the image was unaltered before capture, or guarantee admission in court. Stronger support comes from the original device, account identifiers, URLs, platform exports, original media, metadata, hash records and a contemporaneous collection and transfer log.
FTC and DOJ preservation guidance treats relevant electronic communications, including ephemeral messages, as documents that may need preservation in investigations and litigation. That guidance supports acting promptly, but it is not a universal courtroom test or a substitute for advice specific to your jurisdiction.

| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The profile vanished after you reported it | The account was deleted, blocked or suspended | Use the screenshots, screen recording, URL or account ID, platform confirmation and any export already saved. Do not claim that a missing page is still live. |
| Images or messages are cut off | Lazy loading, scrolling too quickly or a narrow viewport | Capture overlapping frames, wait for media to load, and record a steady screen video. Keep the incomplete capture and document the limitation. |
| Timestamps are unclear | The app hides dates behind a tap or uses relative labels | Capture the surrounding messages, open the detail view if safe, and record the device time zone and collection time separately. |
| Hash verification fails | An original was edited, renamed through a conversion, corrupted or replaced by a backup copy | Stop overwriting files, preserve the differing version, calculate hashes for both, and add an explanation to the transfer log. |
| A report upload is rejected | The service requires a file type, size limit or specific export | Keep originals, make a submission copy in the requested format, note every conversion, and retain the confirmation. |
| You fear the scammer will retaliate | Blocking or reporting may trigger contact from another account | Prioritize personal safety, tell a trusted person, secure accounts and devices, and ask law enforcement or a victim-support service for a safe reporting plan. |

For a public profile or other page that does not require your login, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL through one request. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Do not send private logged-in conversations or sensitive personal data to any third-party service unless your reporting authority permits it.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. Replace the example URL with the public profile URL you are allowed to capture:

A practical handoff package
When you give material to a platform, bank or investigator, provide a concise index rather than an unstructured dump:
- Case identifier and a one-paragraph chronology.
- Profile URL or account ID, display name and usernames.
- Numbered list of original files with their SHA-256 values.
- Conversation screenshots in chronological order, with overlapping context.
- Original media and platform exports, clearly separated from working copies.
- Collection note, hash manifest location and transfer log.
- Payment records and the provider’s report or dispute reference.
- A note identifying any gaps, blocked captures, unavailable timestamps or altered submission copies.
Keep your own protected originals and provide only the copies or access method requested. This makes the material easier to understand without compromising the archive.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I confront the person after saving screenshots?
No. Confrontation can prompt deletion, retaliation or movement to another account. Preserve what is safe, secure your accounts, and let the platform, financial provider or investigators handle contact.
Can I publish the profile screenshots to warn others?
Public posting can expose personal data, interfere with an investigation or create legal and safety problems. Share the archive privately with the platform, bank, law enforcement or a qualified adviser instead.
Is a screen recording better than individual screenshots?
They serve different purposes. Screenshots make specific messages easy to reference; a recording can show scrolling context and sequence. Keep both when practical, along with the untouched originals and collection notes.
What if I already deleted the conversation?
Do not attempt risky recovery or repeatedly access the account. Check whether the platform provides an official export or recovery process, preserve remaining notifications, emails, payment records and device data, and tell the reporting agency exactly what is missing.
