A free agent is a player who is unattached to a club, so there is no transfer fee to pay to another team. The practical goal is not simply to collect the highest-rated unattached player. A useful signing fills a real positional or role need, is sufficiently interested in joining, and can be accommodated within the club’s full contract budget.
When to look for free agents
Start with the new-season check
Open your free-agent search at the start of each season. EA’s Career Mode guide says to “Check free agents at the start of each season for low-cost squad depth” (EA Help). Make this a recurring managerial task rather than a one-time search when you first create a save.
The available list can change as a career progresses. A player you saw earlier may no longer be available, and other unattached players may appear later. Repeat the check when your squad changes, when injuries expose a thin position, or when a contract negotiation fails.

Review your squad first. Identify the positions that lack cover, the roles that are difficult to rotate, and the places where a departure would leave you short. This prevents you from spending wage room on a player who duplicates an already crowded position while another area remains weak.
Set a complete budget
Remove the assumption that “no transfer fee” means “no cost.” Reserve room for the player’s wage over the contract term and for any upfront sign-on and agent fees shown during negotiations. How to shortlist the right candidates
A long list is only useful after you apply the same decision criteria to every candidate. FC 27’s Interest indicator provides an early sense of how willing a player is to join and how difficult the deal may be. It is a difficulty signal, not a promise that negotiations will succeed (EA SPORTS FC 27 Career Deep Dive).

Start with the job the player must do
Use the position filter to create a shortlist, but evaluate the role behind the position. A defender needed for rotation has a different value from a starter expected to play every match. The same applies to midfield cover, reserve goalkeeping and attacking depth. The best free agent is the one whose role fits the minutes and responsibilities you can actually provide.
Use Interest to prioritize, not to guarantee
Interest helps you rank approaches. A lower indication suggests that the player may be harder to convince, but it does not establish a fixed probability of signing. Conversely, a favorable indication does not remove the need to check wages, term, role and fees. Keep at least one or two alternatives from the search list before you approach your first choice.
Read the information available before initiating talks
Compare the player information shown in Scouting, then check whether the candidate’s position and role complement your current squad. Do not invent a rating, potential value, signing chance or scouting timeline from the list: the official FC 27 material describes the search and negotiation information but does not publish a universal success formula or a count of available free agents.

Begin with an inquiry

Choose a squad role that matches the minutes you can realistically give. Offering an important role to a player who will rarely leave the bench can create a poor sporting fit, while offering too small a role to a player you need every week may make the approach less attractive. The right role also helps you compare candidates fairly: a cheaper player who accepts a depth role may be a better solution than an expensive target expecting to start.
Check the recurring cost after the upfront payment
Separate one-time costs from the wage commitment. A sign-on or agent fee affects the immediate budget; the wage continues for the contract’s length. A deal can fit the current cash balance and still strain the season’s wage budget. Before you confirm, verify both categories and leave room for the rest of your squad’s contracts and bonuses.
What to do when a target will not sign
Do not reinterpret Interest as a guarantee
Interest is an early indicator of willingness and negotiation difficulty. It does not guarantee acceptance, a particular wage, or a completed agreement. If the player declines, requests terms beyond your budget, or cannot be offered a credible role, move to the next candidate instead of repeatedly forcing the same deal.
Use a prepared fallback list
Keep alternatives that address the same positional need but differ in Interest, role expectations or total contract cost. This protects the squad plan when a preferred target is unavailable and makes the search more efficient the next time you open Scouting.

A failed approach may reflect your current needs or finances rather than the player list itself. After a sale, release, injury or tactical change, run the free-agent search again. The list can change as the career progresses, so do not assume that a previous result is permanent.
A repeatable free-agent routine
- At the start of each season, audit the squad. Write down the positions and roles that need depth before searching.
- Open Transfer Hub and Scouting. Use the Search Players screen and set Transfer Status to Free Agents, following the guide-based FC 27 path.
- Build a shortlist by need. Remove candidates who do not address a genuine positional or role requirement.
- Compare Interest. Prioritize targets whose willingness appears compatible with your club, while treating the indicator as guidance rather than certainty.
