To schedule Soulmask maintenance, enable RCON with a password and port, restrict access to trusted IP addresses, verify one command manually, then run that command from a hosting-panel task, Linux cron job, Windows Task Scheduler task, or a private container scheduler. Use a server script with 38run when several commands must run as one maintenance sequence.

The default RCON port documented for Soulmask is 19000, but the port actually configured on your server is authoritative. RCON exposes a remote command interface, not the complete in-game gm command set, so confirm that every command you schedule is supported by your server build and RCON implementation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What you need before scheduling anything

Have these items ready before creating a recurring task:

  • Administrative access to the Soulmask server startup configuration or hosting panel.
  • An RCON password that is different from every other account password.
  • The configured RCON port. Soulmask documentation commonly uses 19000 as the default.
  • The private IP address or hostname that the scheduler will use to reach the server.
  • The scheduler itself: a provider panel, Linux host, Windows host, or private container.
  • A logging location where you can inspect the first run and later failures.

Decide what the task should do and when it should run. A save operation, a named archive, and an hourly archive have different effects. Do not schedule a command merely because it appears in an in-game administrator list; RCON may not expose that command.

Enable RCON and restrict its network access

Set the password and port

Add the RCON startup options used by your server:

-rconpsw=your-long-random-password -rconport=19000

Replace the example password and port with your own values. If your provider presents separate fields instead of startup arguments, enter the same values in those fields. The server must be restarted after changing startup configuration so that the listener starts with the new settings.

The port number in the running server configuration overrides the documented default. A scheduler pointed at port 19000 will fail if the server was deliberately moved to another port, while a scheduler using the wrong port can accidentally target another service on the same host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Allow only trusted source addresses

On a Linux installation, the command reference places the RCON allowlist in WS/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/Engine.ini under the [Server.SafeIP] section. Add only the addresses that actually run your scheduler, such as the hosting panel’s private worker address, your maintenance host, or a private container network address.

Do not treat an allowlist as a substitute for a password. Use both controls, and add a firewall rule that permits the configured RCON port only from the same trusted addresses. Avoid exposing RCON directly to the public internet. One vendor’s guidance specifically notes that it does not allocate an external Soulmask RCON port by default because doing so is insecure; a private listener and private scheduler are the safer design.

Understand temporary address changes

Soulmask documentation also describes a ura command for changing allowed addresses at runtime. That change is not retained after a restart, so it is not a replacement for the [Server.SafeIP] configuration and firewall rules. If a restart causes scheduled jobs to time out, check that the persistent allowlist still contains the scheduler’s address.

Test one command manually

Before adding recurrence, connect with the RCON client supported by your panel or operating system and run one harmless command. Test from the same network location that will later run the schedule. A successful test confirms four things at once: the server is listening, the port is reachable, the password is correct, and the selected command is available through RCON.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with help if your client supports it, or use a maintenance command whose effect you understand. Check the server console or RCON client response for an acknowledgement. If the test fails, do not create a recurring task yet; otherwise every run can create a confusing series of identical errors.

Choose where the schedule should run

The scheduler’s location determines how secrets are stored, how the server is reached, and what logs you can inspect.

Approach Where it runs Secret handling Recurrence and retries Logging and rollback
Hosting-panel task Provider control panel or its worker Stored in the provider’s task configuration; provider controls access Panel-defined intervals; retry options vary Usually task logs; backup and rollback features depend on the provider
Linux cron The Linux host running the server or a private maintenance host Protected environment file, service account, or secret store Cron handles recurrence; retries and alerts require script logic or another service Use a dedicated log file and exit codes; rollback is your backup procedure
Windows Task Scheduler The Windows server or a private Windows maintenance host Protected script/environment or Windows credential facility Triggers and retry-on-failure settings are configurable Task History plus script logs; rollback depends on your archive process
Container or sidecar Host scheduler or a private container network Environment variables or an orchestration secret Container restart policy and scheduler configuration vary Container logs and host monitoring; image behavior is community-maintained

Choose the panel when you want the provider to keep the server online and expose a simple recurrence form. Choose a host scheduler when you need control over secrets, retries, notifications, or custom pre- and post-command checks. A container is useful when the server already runs in a private container network, but you must keep the data volume and image configuration under your control.

Schedule a command in a hosting panel

Many Soulmask hosting panels provide a scheduled-task action that sends an RCON command. The exact labels change between providers and panel versions, so use the current labels shown by your provider rather than assuming that every panel has the same menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the control panel and select the Soulmask server.
  2. Open the scheduled-task, automation, or tasks area.
  3. Create a new task and choose the RCON action, not a shell command or server restart action.
  4. Enter the RCON command exactly as it should be sent, such as saveworld or backuphour.
  5. Select the recurrence and timezone. Confirm whether the panel interprets the time as local time or UTC.
  6. Save the task and check that the displayed next-run time is what you intended.
  7. After the first run, inspect the task log and the Soulmask server log. Confirm both a successful RCON response and the expected archive or save activity.

A documented panel example schedules a world backup every 12 hours by selecting an RCON action and setting a repeating interval. Treat that interval as an example, not a universal recommendation: the right frequency depends on player activity, storage capacity, and how much rollback history you need.

Schedule from Linux with cron

On a self-hosted Linux server, cron can start a small wrapper script at fixed times. Keep the RCON password out of the crontab line, because crontabs are often readable by administrators and may appear in diagnostic output.

Create a protected environment file

Store the endpoint and password in a file readable only by the service account that runs the task. For example, the file can define values such as the server address, configured RCON port, and password. Set restrictive permissions and never commit the file to a repository.

chmod 600 /etc/soulmask/rcon.env

The filename and directory are your choice; the important properties are restricted permissions, a private address where possible, and no password in a public script, repository, or process argument.

Write a wrapper that returns a useful exit status

Use the RCON client installed on your host and follow that client’s documented syntax. The wrapper should load the protected environment, send the command, write the response and timestamp to a log, and exit nonzero when the client reports a connection or command error. A generic wrapper structure is:

#!/bin/sh
set -eu
. /etc/soulmask/rcon.env
# Invoke your installed RCON client here with RCON_HOST, RCON_PORT,
# RCON_PASSWORD, and the command required by that client.
# Write the client output to a dated log and preserve its exit status.

The invocation is intentionally client-specific: RCON clients use different executable names and option formats. Copy the syntax from the client documentation and verify it manually before putting the wrapper under cron.

Add and verify the cron entry

Edit the service account’s crontab with crontab -e. A twice-daily task can use two explicit times, or an interval expression if your cron implementation supports it. Keep the command short by calling the wrapper script, for example:

0 0,12 * * * /usr/local/sbin/soulmask-maintenance.sh

This expression runs at midnight and noon according to the host’s timezone. If your operational plan is based on UTC, set the host or cron timezone accordingly and record that decision in the runbook. Redirect standard output and errors to a log if the wrapper does not already do so.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the wrapper interactively first, then wait for the next scheduled run. Inspect the wrapper log, cron’s service log, and the Soulmask server log. A cron process can report success even when a poorly written wrapper ignores the RCON client’s failure, which is why preserving the exit status matters.

Schedule from Windows Task Scheduler

On Windows, create a task that starts a script at the desired interval. The script should call your installed RCON client, keep the password in a protected environment or Windows secret facility, and write a timestamped success or failure record.

  1. Open Task Scheduler and choose Create Task, rather than the simplified basic-task wizard if you need retry and overlap controls.
  2. On General, select a service account with only the permissions needed to run the client and write its log.
  3. On Triggers, create the start time and recurrence. Confirm the timezone and whether the task should run after a missed start.
  4. On Actions, choose Start a program and point it to your wrapper script or PowerShell script. Keep the RCON password out of the action’s argument field.
  5. On Conditions and Settings, configure retry-on-failure, a maximum runtime, and the behavior when a previous run is still active.
  6. Use Run to execute the task immediately, then inspect the task history and script log.

Use a nonzero process exit code when the RCON client cannot connect, rejects authentication, or returns an error. That allows Task Scheduler’s retry policy and monitoring to distinguish a failed maintenance run from a successful one.

Run a scheduler beside a containerized server

A community container configuration exposes RCON_ADDRESS, RCON_PORT, and RCON_PASSWORD environment variables; its documented default port is also 19000. It recommends persistent storage at /home/steam/soulmask. Use those names only when they match the image version you are running, because community-maintained images can change their configuration.

Place the scheduler on the host or in a sidecar container attached to a private network. Ensure that the scheduler can resolve the server address and reach the configured RCON port, while the port remains inaccessible from untrusted networks. Mount only the log and configuration paths the scheduler needs, and supply the password through an orchestration secret or protected environment mechanism rather than baking it into the image.

Test container restart behavior. The server data volume must persist across updates, and the scheduler must not run a backup while the server container is still starting or shutting down. Confirm the image’s update notes before using it for production backups; container behavior is community-maintained rather than an official Soulmask distribution.

Commands commonly used for scheduled maintenance

Command Documented effect Scheduling considerations
saveworld Saves the world without exiting the server. Useful before a planned maintenance window or before another operation. Confirm the save response before treating the run as complete.
backup <new_database_name> Writes a named world archive. Choose a naming convention that is unique and sortable. Monitor storage growth and test that the resulting archive can be found.
backuphour Writes a world archive named with the current UTC date and hour. Use when UTC-based hourly names are convenient. Do not confuse the archive’s UTC label with your panel or host timezone.
help Displays available commands when supported by the RCON interface. Useful for a one-time capability check, not normally a recurring task.
serverfps Reports server frame-rate information when supported. Schedule only if you have a monitoring use for the output; it does not create a backup.
List_OnlinePlayers or lp Lists connected players when supported. Useful for an operator report, but avoid logging more player information than you need.

Permission-management commands are also documented, but they should not be placed on an unattended schedule unless you have a controlled, reviewed change process. Command names and availability can vary by server version, and RCON does not expose every in-game gm command.

Group several operations with 38run

For a repeatable sequence, the command reference documents 38run <ScriptFileName>. Put the command list in the server’s WS/Saved directory, then invoke the script through RCON. This keeps the scheduler entry short and lets you review the maintenance bundle as one file.

A simple maintenance bundle might contain:

saveworld
backuphour

Save the file in the required directory using the filename you will pass to 38run. Test the script manually before scheduling it. If the first command fails, determine whether the server continues to the next command or stops; do not assume transactional behavior. For critical maintenance, inspect the server response and resulting files rather than relying solely on the scheduler’s process exit code.

Use a script when several commands must always run in order, when you need to change the sequence without editing multiple panel tasks, or when a host scheduler needs one auditable entry. Keep unrelated administrative actions out of the same file so that a backup failure cannot be mistaken for a successful permission change.

Security practices for unattended RCON

  • Use a long, unique password and rotate it when staff access changes.
  • Restrict the listener with [Server.SafeIP] and a host firewall. Allow only the scheduler addresses.
  • Prefer a private bind address and private network route. Do not publish the RCON port merely to make a remote scheduler convenient.
  • Never place the password in a public repository, a shared screenshot, a ticket, or a command line that appears in process listings.
  • Use a dedicated service account for cron, Task Scheduler, or a sidecar container.
  • Limit log contents so that passwords and unnecessary player data are not recorded.
  • After changing the port, password, or allowlist, run a manual test from the scheduler host before waiting for the next recurrence.

Make schedules observable and recoverable

Log every run

Record the start time, command or script name, endpoint identifier, client response, and exit status. For backuphour, record the UTC archive name returned or observed on disk. Keep enough history to identify a missed interval without storing credentials.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevent overlapping jobs

A long backup can overlap the next scheduled invocation. Configure the panel or operating-system scheduler to skip a new run while the previous one is active, or use a lock file in the wrapper. Overlap can produce confusing logs and unnecessary load even when the server appears responsive.

Verify the result, not just the connection

An authenticated RCON response proves that the command reached the server; it does not necessarily prove that an archive is usable. Check that the expected archive exists, has a plausible timestamp and size, and is written to persistent storage. Periodically copy an archive to separate storage and perform a restoration test on a non-production instance.

Plan retention and rollback

Hourly or twice-daily archives accumulate quickly. Define how many hourly, daily, and weekly copies you retain, then remove older files only after confirming that newer backups are complete. A hosting panel may offer provider-managed backup and rollback controls, but those capabilities and retention periods vary by provider and plan; do not assume that an RCON archive is automatically replicated.

Troubleshooting scheduled RCON jobs

Connection timeout

  • Confirm that the server is running and listening on the configured port.
  • Check that the scheduler is using the configured port rather than assuming 19000.
  • Verify firewall rules, private routing, container network membership, and the [Server.SafeIP] entry.
  • If the server recently restarted, check whether an allowlist changed only through the temporary ura command and was therefore lost.

Authentication failure

  • Compare the scheduler’s secret with the active -rconpsw value, including capitalization and punctuation.
  • Check for an old secret cached by a panel task, environment file, or container deployment.
  • Restart the server after changing startup arguments, then test manually from the scheduler host.

Command is rejected or unknown

  • Run help if supported and compare the result with the command you selected.
  • Remember that RCON is a limited remote command set, not the complete in-game gm interface.
  • Check spelling and capitalization, especially for List_OnlinePlayers.
  • Test the individual command outside the script before troubleshooting the scheduler.

The task reports success but no archive appears

  • Inspect the server response and server log, not only the panel’s task status.
  • Check the archive destination and the permissions of the server process.
  • For 38run, confirm that the script is in WS/Saved and that the filename passed to the command matches exactly.
  • Check whether the task ran in a different timezone or while the server was still starting.

Backups have unexpected times or names

backuphour names archives with the current UTC date and hour. A panel may display local time while the archive uses UTC, so record both timezones in your operating procedure. If you need a custom naming convention, use the documented backup command with a deliberate name and ensure the name is unique.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical schedule example

For a lightly administered server, one conservative pattern is to run saveworld before a planned maintenance window and backuphour at a recurring interval appropriate to your storage budget. If a named archive is preferred, schedule backup through a wrapper that generates a unique name according to your RCON client’s supported command syntax. For a fixed sequence, place saveworld followed by backuphour in a 38run script and schedule only that script.

Whichever pattern you choose, keep the endpoint private, verify the first execution, retain logs, and perform an occasional restore test. There is no established public statistic for Soulmask RCON reliability, scheduling frequency, or backup success rate, so your own logs and restoration checks are the evidence that the automation is working.
